Good afternoon everyone, Today, we offer a warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Sherborne Town as well as our match officials too. We hope that they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too! It seems like an age ago that we went down to Sherborne on the bus for the first game of the new season, back in the balmy warm days of July. The result didn’t go our way on the afternoon but we have a different team now & I’m sure today’s game will be much tighter. We go into the game on the back of five points from our last three away games, a healthy return, & we hope we continue that run today. Off the pitch, plans are also moving on to improve the club and take it forward to the next level but also to retain the warm, friendly nature that the club is renowned for. The committee are working hard behind the scenes & over the next few months, much work will be done here at the AVB including a new boiler & housing and better car park facilities. Our big thanks to St Aldhelm’s Youth for fixing the lights on the training area so that all the teams can train up there. Our under-18’s have now won six in a row in their inaugural Bristol u-18 Combination season and are going great guns, sitting on top of the league. The lads have a league match at Saltford Stars tomorrow, would be great to see some more support for them as they progress with the club. Finally, we have secured a couple of new sponsors who have pledged to have some advertising boards within the ground, one of them being a very well-known name which is fantastic news for a club of our size, more details later. In the meantime, we would ask you to consider using the services of our kind sponsors featured in the matchday programme and also the advertising boards. If you do so, please could you mention that you saw their advert on your visit here to the AVB Stadium. Many thanks and enjoy the match Martin McConachie, Club Secretary

THE HENGROVE 75 In August 2023, Hengrove Athletic Football Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Formed shortly after the war by a group of demobbed soldiers, “The Grove” initially played down in Whitchurch then relocated to its current base here at Norton Lane in 1964, gradually moving up the leagues too. We’ve now been a Western League club for fifteen years! To celebrate our 75th birthday, we have put together a group of projects from around the club to take us to the next level on & off the pitch. Four categories; pitch, clubhouse, grounds and structure have been identified and various projects will be repaired, rebuilt, renewed and restored over the next two seasons & we’ve started the tasks already by refurbishing the bar area during the winter. The aim is to make the club more sustainable, more welcoming, smarter, fresher and an even greater place to watch the beautiful game. There’s so many more jobs, large and small, that we will be getting on with including painting, hammering, nailing, building & clearing. There are plans to re-introduce at least one more Hengrove team, bring in several new sponsors, build a new car park and possibly get a big friendly for the anniversary day. If you can offer a service, a pair of hands or your expertise, please see a committee member (listed in front of programme) and let them know. As much of the work as is possible will be done by volunteers & we’d love to see the AVB Stadium look as good as possible ahead of the anniversary. Thank you in advance.

The Cystic Fibrosis Comfort Fund is a small Bristol based charity, independent of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which aims to help those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis in their daily lives and enhance their quality of life. It was founded in 1991 by a small group of people from the Bristol Children’s Hospital following a bequest by a grandfather. In his will he stipulated the money should be used to benefit patients with Cystic Fibrosis to help them manage their own lives. There were originally two Trustees from the Children’s Hospital, a senior nurse, and a clinical nurse specialist, two parents, and a lecturer in physiotherapy. The Fund grew from there and it became a registered charity in 1993. Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common, life-limiting, inherited diseases. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs & digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Those affected are born with CF and approximately 1 in every 2,500 babies born in the UK will inherit the condition. Improvements in care and treatment mean that more & more babies born with CF will become adults. However, their life expectancy is shortened.

This is a charity supported closely by Andy Stone (Stoner) from AS_FootyReview on Twitter where all profits from his merchandise is donated to the charity to continue helping and raising awareness to a charity close to his heart following the death of his close friend Sam “Syd Brimson” Thank you and enjoy the game!

Focus on.... SHERBORNE TOWN FC

The club was officially founded in 1894, making them one of the oldest clubs in Dorset, but evidence has come to light that Sherborne had a football team playing friendly matches in the 1888 with a match report from 25th November 1888 losing 2-0 to Yeovil Casuals. The club played their friendly matches in those early days at Marston Road, on the outskirts of the town, during this time the Dorset Football League was founded in the 1896/97 season. The club joined local leagues and entered local charity cup competitions during this period, later joining the County league. Following the opening of the Terrace playing fields just before the Second World War, this became the new venue for home games. The club then moved across the road from the playing fields in 1985 to its present home, Raleigh Grove, referencing Sir Walter Raleigh’s historical connection with the town. The Raleigh Grove site was built on a grazing field, at the level of the raised banking that exists today on the northwest side of the ground. This had to be levelled, to create a playing area, a task made all the more difficult as there was a pond in the far right corner of the ground. When the ground was built the club noted the regulations laid down for promotion from the Dorset Premier league at the time, so a covered section on the south west side of the ground was erected for supporters. The pitch also had four drains laid to aid the playing surface. When the site was completed the new ground was somewhat ahead of its time, considering many of the club’s rivals at that time were based on little more than park or village pitches. The clubhouse was a project reflecting the forethought of the then chairman of the club, Ken Mullins. This spacious facility also incorporates the dressing rooms, bar, function room, kitchen, storeroom and toilets, including disabled facilities. The record attendance at the ground is 1,000 versus Eastleigh (featuring ex-Southampton and England international Matthew Le Tissier), in the Andy Shephard Memorial match on July 27th 2003. Four Football League clubs have played at Raleigh Grove: Plymouth Argyle, Torquay United, Swindon Town and Yeovil Town. In 2001 the committee at Sherborne Town FC outlined a three-phase, five-year plan for the future development of the ground. The plans included a hard standing path along the north west side of the pitch for spectators, a 150-seater stand on the same side, relocating the dugouts, clubhouse improvements, and the installation of floodlights. Planning permission was granted in 2003 and in 2004 phases one and two were completed, with hard standing, a grandstand, new dugouts and floodlights erected and working in just three months. Then manager Martyn Starnes season by season lowered the average age of the playing staff and ...

Focus on.... SHERBORNE TOWN FC

also attracted quality players with a genuine hunger for the game. This combination led to the team finishing in the top six of the Dorset Premier League for five seasons running, leading to the long battle to convince the league officials of the club’s determination to join the south west’s premier football league. In the season 2003/4 the club finished in fourth and also won the Dorset Senior County Cup. An application was made to the Western League but the Dorset Premier League refused to grant consent. However, with the last game of the 2005-6 season Sherborne produced an excellent performance to beat Bridport Reserves 2-0 away to secure the runners-up position, and days later the news broke that the club had at last been accepted into the Western League. The first campaign in the Western League First Division proved one of consolidation, before earning promotion as runners-up to Wellington the next season under the guidance of Kevin Leigh. Sherborne started life in the Premier Division with a new manager at the helm, as Nik Flory assumed the reins. However, Leigh was back in charge before the season's end, despite the club securing mid-table safety largely thanks to a 13-game unbeaten run. Leigh stepped down for a second time in August 2009, replaced by former Yeovil Town striker Mickey Spencer. Relegation was avoided on the last day of the season, with Spencer's impact shining through at the start of the 2010-11 campaign. On Saturday 25 September 2010 Sherborne played arguably the biggest game of their 116-year history as they hosted Hungerford Town in the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying - the furthest they have ever reached in the competition. Spencer left the club in November 2011 and was succeeded by player turned manager Jamie Manley. Despite a strong push towards the end of the season the club was relegated to the First Division by the smallest of margins. The 2012/13 season saw Sherborne return to the Premier League at the first time of asking and as First Division Champions; Jamie Manley also won the league's Manager of the Year award. At the end of the season the club secured substantial funding from The Football Stadia Improvement Fund, Viridor Credits Environmental Company, Sherborne Town Council and West Dorset District Council to improve the clubhouse facilities and renovate the pitch. Ex Sheffield United, Yeovil Town and Weymouth midfielder Gerry Pearson was installed as the 1st team manager for the 2016/17 season. Gerry worked tirelessly to preserve the clubs Premier league status but unfortunately the club was relegated at the end of the season. Former assistant manager Wayne Jerome took over the hot seat in 2018 and he has built a very competitive team turning the club’s fortunes around, cumulating in a 2nd and promotion position in the Covid 19 season which was deemed null and void.

YOU HAVE to wonder what Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney really made of their first experience of Non-League football. In case you hadn’t heard, the actors who bought Wrexham turned up at Maidenhead United to see their first Red Dragons in the flesh recently. For people who roll in some pretty high-profile and glamorous circles, walking in to be greeted with some heckling must have been an eyeopening experience. I doubt that happens on the red carpet. The depth of the National League System on full show with more than 1,600 turning out on a dark night to watch 90 minutes of the Beautiful Game. Fantastic. I imagine they returned home with an even greater sense of how vital all these clubs are to their communities, not to mention how much it means to the supporters of the club they now own. Of course, as is the way with these things, their team lost 3-2 before conceding a late equaliser against Torquay United on Saturday to draw 1-1. The documentary covering their take-over will be titled Welcome to Wrexham. Last week was also a Welcome to Football. Where it rarely goes to plan. After Tuesday’s defeat, Deadpool star Reynolds – a seriously successful businessman to boot – described his feelings on an instagram post. “Football is a staggering, heartbreaking, gorgeous, tommy-gun of soul-deadening, evil and beauty and I'm never sleeping again ever, ever.” Whether you are interested in their takeover or are indifferent, we can probably all relate, in some form, to that summary. Whoever you support, there must have been times when you think: Why do I do this? I know I have. There are millions of people in this country who have no interest in this mad game. Who don’t spend their Saturdays – or midweek evenings – standing in the cold, or glued to websites and social media to see how their team and rivals have got on. And sometimes, after those last-minute goals, you do wonder if it would be easier to not bother. But that’s the thing with football. It hooks you in. It refuses to let go. Conceding stoppage-time goals is equalled out by those stoppage-time winners. Or at least the hope of one. And there’s something bizarrely magical about being out in the freezing cold watching a drab draw. Especially in Non-League. Where you’re so close to the action and feel so much a part of it. I think we’ve seen that this season with some of the attendances across all levels – a combination of people just happy to be out at games again, mixed with an apathy of the higher reaches of the game. Because, yes, football can be a real pain at times. There are issues at all levels that really grate and things in Non-League that could be better. But it also provides more drama and moments than any Hollywood script. Hopefully the Wrexham duo saw that for themselves.

Hengrove Athletic Club History

Hengrove Athletic F.C was formed in 1948 from players who were demobbed from National Service. As a footnote, there is also wartime history to the club colours of green and white. With rationing and many shortages, football shirts were virtually unobtainable, so all of the members of Hengrove Athletic F.C donated an ordinary white shirt and a mother of one of the players kindly dyed them green in the bath at her Knowle home. The colour green had no symbolic meaning. It was the only colour available at the time! The founding fathers of Hengrove Athletic F.C then agreed to retain these colours for the new club. A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed in Division 3 for the start of 1948/49 season. A Reserve XI was established in 1950 and in the same year Hengrove Hall was rented for club meetings and social gatherings. The club continued to expand and the ‘A’ XI started in 1953, followed by the 30-plus XI in 1959. These four football teams made Hengrove Athletic F.C the largest club in the Bristol and Suburban League at the time – after just eleven years. A ‘B’ XI replaced the 30 plus in 1962. The long search for a ground came to fruition on Sunday 7 June 1964 when Norton Lane was officially opened and Hengrove Athletic F.C took up residence. The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974/75 season, where they remained until 2005/06 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division Champions and joined the Western League for the start of the 2006/07 season. Our Floodlights and Stand were installed at the ground in 2007/08 to achieve the necessary ground grading of the Western League. The EWW Stand was installed at the ground in 2012/13 to achieve the necessary ground grading of entry into the FA Cup and future possible promotions. The first XI finished runners-up in Western League Division One in 2012/13, achieving promotion to the Premier Division. They also lifted the Les Phillips League Cup (Western League) in 2015/16 before winning promotion to the Premier Division again the following season. In 2017/18 under new manager John Durbin, the club finished ninth in the Premier Division, their highest ever position and as a result, were also the highest placed Bristol side in the division. However, this was followed by relegation back to Division One in 2018/19. Jamie Hillman returned for a third spell as manager in the summer of 2019 but the next two seasons failed to play to a finish due to the COVID pandemic. In both seasons, the Grove finished in mid table.
