Good afternoon everyone, Today, we offer a warm welcome to the players, officials & supporters of visitors Tytherington Rocks F.C. as well as our match officials too. We hope they all enjoy their brief stay in the village and have a safe journey home too! Tytherington were one of the three new teams in the First Division last season and have had a very creditable debut season at this level. We play the reverse fixture in just three weeks time & we’re all looking forward to making our first visit there. Our recent good run of form has continued since my last notes with three wins from three against Almondsbury (3-1), Bristol Telephones (3-0) and an amazing win on Tuesday night at Bishop Sutton (4-3). When Sutton’s third goal went in, a penalty, to make it 3-1, there weren’t many people in the ground that gave Hengrove a prayer but half an hour or so later, the lads came off the pitch with three points. I’ve been at the club for almost five years now (to some people,, it probably feels much longer!) but the match is right up there among my Hengrove highlights. The cracking atmosphere generated by a noisy contingent of supporters plus the guts and determination of the players made a perfect mix and wow, what a finish! Off the pitch, plans are still moving on to improve the club and take it forward to the next level but also to retain the warm, friendly nature that the club is renowned for. The committee are working hard behind the scenes & over the next few months, much work will be done here at the AVB including a new boiler & housing and better car park facilities. Our big thanks to St Aldhelm’s Youth for fixing the lights on the training area so that all the teams can train up there. Our under-18’s are currently sitting in second spot in the u18 Bristol Combination table, eight points behind leaders Bath City but with three games in hand on them. They are having a great season and have only lost one game all season; the lads make the trip to Backwell Athletic tomorrow so please support them if you can, they’re a fantastic group! . Many thanks and enjoy the match Martin McConachie, Club Secretary
THE HENGROVE 75 In August 2023, Hengrove Athletic Football Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Formed shortly after the war by a group of demobbed soldiers, “The Grove” initially played down in Whitchurch then relocated to its current base here at Norton Lane in 1964, gradually moving up the leagues too. We’ve now been a Western League club for fifteen years! To celebrate our 75th birthday, we have put together a group of projects from around the club to take us to the next level on & off the pitch. Four categories; pitch, clubhouse, grounds and structure have been identified and various projects will be repaired, rebuilt, renewed and restored over the next two seasons & we’ve started the tasks already by refurbishing the bar area during the winter. The aim is to make the club more sustainable, more welcoming, smarter, fresher and an even greater place to watch the beautiful game. There’s so many more jobs, large and small, that we will be getting on with including painting, hammering, nailing, building & clearing. There are plans to re-introduce at least one more Hengrove team, bring in several new sponsors, build a new car park and possibly get a big friendly for the anniversary day. If you can offer a service, a pair of hands or your expertise, please see a committee member (listed in front of programme) and let them know. As much of the work as is possible will be done by volunteers & we’d love to see the AVB Stadium look as good as possible ahead of the anniversary. Thank you in advance.

The Cystic Fibrosis Comfort Fund is a small Bristol based charity, independent of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which aims to help those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis in their daily lives and enhance their quality of life. It was founded in 1991 by a small group of people from the Bristol Children’s Hospital following a bequest by a grandfather. In his will he stipulated the money should be used to benefit patients with Cystic Fibrosis to help them manage their own lives. There were originally two Trustees from the Children’s Hospital, a senior nurse, and a clinical nurse specialist, two parents, and a lecturer in physiotherapy. The Fund grew from there and it became a registered charity in 1993. Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common, life-limiting, inherited diseases. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs & digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Those affected are born with CF and approximately 1 in every 2,500 babies born in the UK will inherit the condition. Improvements in care and treatment mean that more & more babies born with CF will become adults. However, their life expectancy is shortened.
This is a charity supported closely by Andy Stone (Stoner) from AS_FootyReview on Twitter where all profits from his merchandise is donated to the charity to continue helping and raising awareness to a charity close to his heart following the death of his close friend Sam “Syd Brimson” Thank you and enjoy the game!

Focus on.... TYTHERINGTON ROCKS FC
Tytherington Football Club was formed in 1896 by the local Headmaster, Mr Emanuel, and others including the Rev John Bingley. Rev. Bingley stipulated that, to gain his support, the club should play in amber and black - his old college colours - Brase- nose in Oxford. The club played in the Wotton-Under-Edge League and travelled to away matches by waggonette, a four-wheeled horse drawn cart, with seats along both sides. The club played at many different grounds in the early days, including Mill-Leaze Fields behind the village shop. They eventually found a permanent home at the Hardwicke Playing Fields. The club used the Swan Inn as their changing rooms until a new pavilion was erected by the Parish Council, on the playing fields in 1938. In the 1920s Tytherington FC was suspended by the Gloucestershire Football Association for non-payment of a fine. The fine followed a referee being jostled into an adjoining brook after what the home side felt were some dubious decisions! No pay - no play, so Tytherington disbanded until 1932 when Tytherington Rocks FC was formed, joining the Bristol Suburban League. War disrupted the local leagues and Rocks re-joined Division 1 in 1947. The same year a youth team called the Pebbles was formed and played in the Glouces-tershire Junior Boys' League. The team spent most of the 1960s between Division 3 and Division 5. The facilities were upgraded in 1979-80, with new showers and toilet block together with electricity! The Reserves reformed in Division 7 and the first team reached Division 1 for the 1987-88 season. In 1987-88 saw the formation of the third team joining Division 7 and at the same time Streamside Juniors were adopted as Tytherington Rocks Juniors. A floodlit training pitch was opened in 1988. Rocks entered Premier Division 2 and by 1993 arrived in Premier Division 1. Ground improvements continued with team dugouts and perimeter fencing. As Champions of the Bristol and Suburban Premier League in 1996-97, it was shock and disappointment when their Gloucester-shire County League application was rejected. Undaunted, attention then turned to the clubhouse. A new bar, separate changing facilities, referee accommodation for both sexes and a spectator stand, all raised the profile of the club and, in 1997-98, this time the County League application was successful.
Focus on.... TYTHERINGTON ROCKS FC
The team survived a difficult first season but, during the next four years, enjoyed top half finishes and were GFA Challenge Trophy Finalists, League Cup Finalists and, in 2003-04, were County League Runners-up. Hellenic League football and Hellenic League status Division 1 [West] arrived in 2004-05 Season 2011-12 was to prove to be the first of three outstanding years for Tytherington Rocks. The 1st team finished 18 points clear to win the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 [West] title, followed by a 3rd place and then champions again in 2013-14, this time by 5 points. However, once again, in 2014, as in previous years, a transfer request to move to the Toolstation Western League was rejected by the FA. This refusal had a devastating effect on the club with players and team management of both 1st team and Reserves leaving en masse. History will record that several managers and committee members worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of the club during the following four seasons. The 2018/2019 season ended with all 3 teams (U18, Reserves and 1st team) all completing their programmes, although they all finished in the penultimate positions in their respective League divisions. Between August 2019 and Sept 2021, Rocks experienced major changes both on and off the field. The Reserves had folded mid season in 2020, an U18 team had run its course and a Ladies team had arrived and left. Numerous committee, management, and playing staff departures and arrivals took place during 2 seasons destroyed by the Corona virus. One welcome achievement did materialise however. Rocks won the 2020 Beaufort Cup, an end of season competition run by the Bristol Premier Sunday League. As the 2021/2022 season approached, the Club move (at long last) from the Hellenic League to the Toolstation Western League, and the Corona virus subsided (hopefully). The new team management, led by Tiago Carreiras and Jake Edwards prepared the team thoroughly. Alongside them, Chris Shearwood and Darren Hoare introduced a second team currently in the Suburban Premier League. Has a new era arrived? Time will tell.

Hengrove Athletic Club History
Hengrove Athletic F.C was formed in 1948 from players who were demobbed from National Service. As a footnote, there is also wartime history to the club colours of green and white. With rationing and many shortages, football shirts were virtually unobtainable, so all of the members of Hengrove Athletic F.C donated an ordinary white shirt and a mother of one of the players kindly dyed them green in the bath at her Knowle home. The colour green had no symbolic meaning. It was the only colour available at the time! The founding fathers of Hengrove Athletic F.C then agreed to retain these colours for the new club. A successful application was made to join the Bristol and Suburban League and they were placed in Division 3 for the start of 1948/49 season. A Reserve XI was established in 1950 and in the same year Hengrove Hall was rented for club meetings and social gatherings. The club continued to expand and the ‘A’ XI started in 1953, followed by the 30-plus XI in 1959. These four football teams made Hengrove Athletic F.C the largest club in the Bristol and Suburban League at the time – after just eleven years. A ‘B’ XI replaced the 30 plus in 1962. The long search for a ground came to fruition on Sunday 7 June 1964 when Norton Lane was officially opened and Hengrove Athletic F.C took up residence. The first XI was accepted by the Somerset Senior League for the 1974/75 season, where they remained until 2005/06 when they were runaway, unbeaten, Premier Division Champions and joined the Western League for the start of the 2006/07 season. Our Floodlights and Stand were installed at the ground in 2007/08 to achieve the necessary ground grading of the Western League. The EWW Stand was installed at the ground in 2012/13 to achieve the necessary ground grading of entry into the FA Cup and future possible promotions. The first XI finished runners-up in Western League Division One in 2012/13, achieving promotion to the Premier Division. They also lifted the Les Phillips League Cup (Western League) in 2015/16 before winning promotion to the Premier Division again the following season. In 2017/18 under new manager John Durbin, the club finished ninth in the Premier Division, their highest ever position and as a result, were also the highest placed Bristol side in the division. However, this was followed by relegation back to Division One in 2018/19. Jamie Hillman returned for a third spell as manager in the summer of 2019 but the next two seasons failed to play to a finish due to the COVID pandemic. In both seasons, the Grove finished in mid table.
