Non-League Footballers Mental Health Championed by Bath Mind and the Toolstation Western League

The Toolstation Western League are working with Bath Mind to pilot a mental health partnership supporting the football family and players in particular. The six Western League sides located in Bath and North East Somerset have been offered specially created posters, promoting mental health support services designed to help younger people, which can be located into their home and away changing rooms.

Research conducted by the Toolstation Western League earlier this season highlighted that around a quarter of players had considered seeking help with a mental health issue. The subject of mental health was first tackled by the Western League in March 2020, when they launched their Think of a Fan campaign.

Chairman of the Western League, John Pool, explained: “Think of a Fan was our way of remembering that for many fans, football is more than just a game. It’s an important release, a chance to meet friends, get out of the house and have some fun.

Many people are still working through the loneliness and anxiety caused by lockdown, but we must not forget that our players are no different. They are as important to us as any members of our football family and this important partnership with Bath Mind is our way of supporting them.”

As well as changing room posters, Bath Mind have provided leaflets for fans, as well as programme adverts, highlighting the variety of support services they provide. If successful, this initial pilot will be extended by the Western League to cover all 40 Clubs across the South West of England, from Cornwall to Wiltshire.

Hannah Roper, Director of Business Development at Bath Mind, said: “We at Bath Mind are thrilled to be working in partnership with The Toolstation Western League, to support and promote positive mental health for the football community. Throughout the pandemic Bath Mind has been fighting an epidemic of mental ill-health. We have increased our services to meet the growing needs of our community, and help reduce pressure on NHS services.

Through this pilot we hope to encourage everyone to talk about their mental health, seek help at an early stage and reduce the stigma associated with mental ill-health. As a local, independent charity, Bath Mind relies heavily on local fundraising to keep our services going, therefore we are grateful to The Toolstation Western League and their fans for their fundraising efforts.”

The Cystic Fibrosis Comfort Fund is a small Bristol based charity, independent of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which aims to help those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis in their daily lives and enhance their quality of life. It was founded in 1991 by a small group of people from the Bristol Children’s Hospital following a bequest by a grandfather. In his will he stipulated the money should be used to benefit patients with Cystic Fibrosis to help them manage their own lives.

There were originally two Trustees from the Children’s Hospital, a senior nurse, and a clinical nurse specialist, two parents, and a lecturer in physiotherapy. The Fund grew from there and it became a registered charity in 1993.

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common, life-limiting, inherited diseases. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs & digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Those affected are born with CF and approximately 1 in every 2,500 babies born in the UK will inherit the condition. Improvements in care and treatment mean that more & more babies born with CF will become adults. However, their life expectancy is shortened.

This is a charity supported closely by Andy Stone (Stoner) from AS_FootyReview on Twitter where all profits from his merchandise is donated to the charity to continue helping and raising awareness to a charity close to his heart following the death of his close friend Sam “Syd Brimson”

Hengrove Athletic Football Club is renowned within the local leagues and amongst match officials for offering a warm, friendly welcome and top notch hospitality. The ground itself, the AVB Stadium, is pleasant and offers superb views of Bristol as well as the peace and quiet of the country. It’s a lovely place to watch a game of football! Here at the club, the last few seasons have been very successful and as a result, we are looking for people to join the team. Not the one ON the pitch that has won two promotions and a Les Phillips Cup in the last ten years but the one OFF IT; the team behind the team if you like.

We are looking for anyone that feels they can make a contribution to the club. On matchdays, it could be serving refreshments and food, selling raffle tickets, working on the front gate or helping to tidy up after the game. You’ll get to watch the football free of charge of course but better still, you’ll be joining a small team of dedicated hard working volunteers that make this club very special.

On non-matchdays, there are other jobs that need doing such as strimming, painting, cleaning, weeding and brushing. You name it, we need to do it! However with only a small band of willing helpers, we can always do with a little more help, no matter how many hours you can give up. Supporting the club...

There are several more ways of getting your company name out there that we can help you with. Perimeter banners, perimeter boards, programme advertising, website advertising.. they are all available within the club.

Perimeter Boards are one option that many companies have chosen recently. Match action pictures often appear online either on websites or social media so your company board could be seen regularly as well as those who attend the match.

Perimeter boards cost £250 for the first year (including a one-off manufacturing charge of £100) then cost £100 a year thereafter.

Perimeter Banners are a similar option but made from a hard wearing fabric. The same size as a board (2.4m x 915mm or 8’ x 3’), they cost £200 (including a one off manufacturing charge of £75) then cost £100 a year thereafter.

Programme Advertising has also proven popular in recent seasons. After having “gone online” in recent seasons, the club have decided to go back to printing a copy for its supporters, a popular move with many non-league fans too.

Advertising costs just £100 for a full page (A5) or £50 for a half page; this is for a full season of matchday programmes so this season, at least 21 programmes. You can change the actual composition of the programme each week to keep it topical and/or time sensitive!

Website Advertising is the cheapest form of advertising and is just £25. For this, your link/logo will sit on a carousel on the front page and when visitors click the link, it will take them to your website. Our club website is one of the most popular ones in the league with more than 2,000 unique visits each week during the season.
