NMBS cyber security
NMBS has reinforced its commitment to data protection and cyber security by achieving Cyber Essentials Plus a government-backed programme run by the National Cyber Security Centre that helps to protect organisations against a range of the most common cyber-attacks
Indeed, Government data published in April last year shows significant figures about the number of reported cyber-attacks across different-sized businesses Almost a third of small businesses reported a breach or attack, 59% of medium-sized businesses and 96% of large businesses reported a cyber security risk in the last 12 months
Using the scheme, NMBS has strengthened its cyber security defences and demonstrated its commitment to security compliance requirements The scheme has also helped it to enhance certain areas of its IT systems including firewalls, secure configurations, access control, malware protection and security patch management, which could all have detrimental effects on NMBS suppliers and members if breached

WCoBM City & Awards
“Excellence and dedication” were the watchwords at the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants’ recent City & Awards luncheon The prestigious event celebrated the next generation of builders’ merchants, giving them the opportunity to network with senior construction industr y professionals and distinguished guests, as well as getting what was, for many, their first experience of a London Liver y company.

In the LOOP
British Gypsum is to become the first UK building materials manufacturer to form a strategic partnership with The Pallet LOOP in a bid to significantly reduce pallet waste The manufacturer uses approximately 1.6 million white timber pallets every year but its switch to a circular pallet re-use scheme is set to “radically reduce” the avoidable waste that can result from pallets being disposed of unsustainably
The move supports British Gypsum’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon by 2050 with the initiative being one of many set out in its sustainability roadmap In addition, the supplier hopes The Pallet LOOP partnership using its reusable pallets and ser vice-led collection model will also enable it to help its customers support their own reductions in waste and net zero targets
British Gypsum MD Dean O’Sullivan said: “Pallets left behind after products have been removed have for a long time created a challenge, with many being unsustainably disposed of at a heavy environmental cost By joining forces with The Pallet LOOP, we aim to significantly reduce this practice.”
British Gypsum will roll out the scheme in two stages, with the instantly identifiable, green-coloured LOOP pallets scheduled to be in
circulation from May for its bagged plaster and accessories From July, its plasterboard range, based on pallet size, will begin to transition over, resulting in 70% of its products delivered on reusable pallets once the scheme is fully operational It is hoped the remaining 30% will move across during a later phase of the project
The Pallet LOOP founder Paul Lewis added: “Our ser vice is a real step change that is set to deliver substantial benefits across the UK construction supply chain. We can’t wait to get our LOOP pallets into circulation and look for ward to other building material manufacturers following British Gypsum in adopting our circular pallet reuse model
“Using our ser vice, merchants, distributors, principal contractors, and housebuilding companies will be able to book pallet collections, which can take place from as little as 72 hours later There will also be a PayBack of up to £4 available for ever y green coloured pallet they put back in the LOOP”

Travis Perkins plc has announced that Nick Roberts is stepping down as Chief Executive Officer and from the Board after five years in the role A statement from the company read: “ The Board and Nick are aligned that now is the right time to search for a new leader to take the business for ward and the Nominations Committee is currently undertaking a thorough search process for Nick’s successor Nick has agreed to remain in role until a successor is identified ” Jasmine Whitbread, Chair, said: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Nick for his dedication and contribution to the business over the last five years While there has been good progress made in modernising the business, the Board fully recognises the under performance of the
business over recent reporting periods, in the context of continued economic challenges and end market weakness.
“We remain fully focused on improving profitability and enhancing cash generation, as well as accelerating changes to our operating model to create a simpler, more efficient business, well positioned to emerge stronger when markets recover and to grow shareholder value ”
Nick Roberts commented: “ Travis Perkins is a great company with a talented team, and I have been privileged to ser ve as CEO for the last five years I am proud of the progress we have made in modernising the company While the Board identifies my successor, I will continue to rigorously execute on our plan and drive performance ”

The research, conducted as part of Wavin’s annual ‘State of the Nation’ survey, shows that plumbers have seen an increasing number of issues as a direct result of customers not tur ning their heating on. For example, almost two thirds of respondents said they were receiving more callouts for faulty heating systems and this comes at a time when the majority of those surveyed said they were already facing “a workload that was too high ”

Steve Harris, Technical Support Engineer at Wavin UK, said: “This research lays bare the situation we are now in. Plumbers are under more pressure than ever before to accept work that they can’t realistically handle to ease the strain on their customers. This could have serious repercussions on work / life balance, risking a skills exodus from plumbers who
cannot keep pace with the demands being placed on them
“At the same time, there is already a skills deficit that needs to be addressed We need more plumbers entering the industry, not less, which makes the lack of time that can be given to training apprentices even more worrying ”
Steve continued: “That’s what makes this research so crucial in raising awareness of the challenges we face Plumbers pride themselves on hard graft and it’s better to be busy than have no work on at all but unless plumbers are supported in addressing the skills shortage and tackling issues associated with the cost-of-living crisis, the industry is at risk of sleepwalking into a situation that will be difficult to come back from ”
n In addition to the sur vey, Wavin recently hosted a roundtable event with three plumbers to take a deep dive into the industr y’s hot topics. Use the shortcode www.rdr.link/mbd003 to watch a video recording of their conversation
A new survey from Wavin sheds light on the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on the plumbing industry, from the issues faced by customers and the plumbers themselves.
BUYING GROUPS & MEMBER ORGANISATIONS
ESG scrutiny
Bringing together key environmental, social and governance issues, ESG is a framework that can be used by any organisation even small businesses to evaluate and manage its impact on society and the environment, as well as how it chooses to govern itself internally
Within the builders’ merchants sector, ESG is clearly increasing in importance, judging by the volume of sustainability reports, wellbeing initiatives and responsible procurement policies being published by suppliers and merchants alike NMBS’s Board take ESG ver y seriously we want to get real value from integrating ESG into all parts of our business, making sure implementation is much more than a tick-box activity
The ESG journey for NMBS started in earnest following a report by Mazars in 2022, which helped us to identify material risks and implement strategies to mitigate them One of the first steps was determining our baseline carbon footprint for the 2022 financial year Mazars concluded that NMBS’s carbon footprint in 2022 (in terms of CO2 equivalent) was just over 636 tonnes, with the majority of carbon emissions coming from its scope 3 activities which includes purchased goods and ser vices, business travel and other indirect emissions, but not purchases on behalf of members
To combat the carbon emissions, we aim for a fully electric vehicle fleet by 2026 We will also move away from gas heating and switch to a green electricity tariff meaning that we can meet our target to reach Net Zero on scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 Scope 3 may take a decade longer
We need to be realistic about what can be changed We are committed to making permanent changes and are not seeking to claim Net Zero status by using offsetting unless there really is no other way
Social challenges
We are focusing on two big issues: Human Capital Management and tackling the scourge of modern slavery in parts of the construction products industry The former really boils down to treating people well and we have made strong commitments to fair wages, high levels of employee engagement and volunteering support for local charities
We are committed to do all we can to eliminate modern slaver y in its value chain and the research by Mazars highlighted the opportunity for us to make a meaningful difference in promoting and enforcing anti-slaver y policies held by materials and product suppliers. We’re working with our stakeholders to share what we know and have found to be effective, offer our collateral at no cost to others, be open to
“We also want to speak out when instances of modern slaver y are found. We will complete annual monitoring of suppliers to check their compliance with modern slaver y legislation.”
learning, lead and support innovative approaches and identify risks
We also want to speak out when instances of modern slaver y are found. We will complete annual monitoring of suppliers to check their compliance with modern slaver y legislation We are also putting particular scrutiny on suppliers that explicitly state operations in the highest-risk locations, such as the Middle East and China, or are linked to core commodities such as granite, stone, timber, tantalum, tungsten and tin
Moving for ward
Our ESG strateg y is a priority for 2024, a year when we will all need a strong set of guiding principles to see us through choppy economic waters and yet more social, political and technological change Taken together, the ESG elements of our business plan will create a powerful set of promises that will influence all our decision-making and business relationships They are closely linked to our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Embedding ESG into our strategy is a transformational journey, helping us to create more value for all our stakeholders.
By considering and addressing these ESG factors, we can not only contribute to a more sustainable and socially responsible world but also enhance our own long-term success and the success of members ESG considerations can attract socially conscious customers, investors, and partners, and can also help mitigate risks and improve operational efficiency
n For more information on NMBS, enter the shortcode www rdr link/mbd004
Julie Langford, Finance and Operations Director at NMBS, discusses how the organisation is helping the merchant industry navigate its ESG responsibilities and shares what it has learned from its own ESG journey.

BRADFORDS DOMESTIC RETROFIT ASSESSMENT
Using the findings from an pilot initiative launched last summer which saw Bradfords provide employees with a retrofit assessment of their homes, the builders’ merchant has now unveiled a formal partnership with Target CO2 to roll out domestic retrofit support across the South West in addition to developing a suite of ‘retrofit hero’ products
The employee scheme, in addition to upskilling the Bradfords team on retrofit, also provided invaluable insight into the most common measures required to improve housing stock For example, while expected measures such as additional loft insulation were required in the majority of the houses assessed, the need for solutions from zone heating, radiator thermostats, internal wall insulation, and improved ventilation systems also emerged
While there are recurring themes, every home is different, so retrofit assessments must always be bespoke The industry-first Home Packs were developed to include a condition report, an up-to-date EPC assessment, recommendations to improve energy efficiency (conducted to PAS2035 standards), and an indication of eligibility for government grants
David Young, Bradfords CEO, said: “We need new approaches and partnerships if we are to meet national retrofit targets and make our homes warmer, healthier, and cheaper to heat and cool That’s why we’re extending our collaboration with Target CO2 and others in this space, so that we can provide a complete service not just stocking products, but upskilling staff and enabling customers to carry out their domestic retrofit projects without making potentially costly mistakes that can happen if work is undertaken without this crucial first step being taken ”
PBM takes a look at some of the latest news stories from across the merchant sector including new service initiatives, partnerships, branch upgrades and more.

Hemal Morjaria, MD of City Plumbing’s Renewables and Electrical division, said: “There’s a belief that heat pumps aren’t suitable for many types of homes or that they don’t perform as expected once installed, but that’s often down to not choosing the right system for the home and the customer’s needs at the start. Our new tool takes that pain away ”

MGM TIMBER ONLINE SERVICES
Providing all the functionality of a standard e-commerce site with a full selection of products, MGM Timber’s new online platform also features individual user logins for trade customers to access “the same benefits they would usually gain in-store ” From agreed pricing and instant quotes to finance details like the ability to pay outstanding invoices, the facility gives tradespeople the opportunity to do their admin outside of normal branch hours
In addition, the portal will allow tradespeople to customise quote documents to be issued to their own customers, while individual project lists enable them to keep track of all products and costs for multiple projects at one time
MD Steve Galbraith said: “Customer service is one of our greatest strengths at MGM Timber, so we are not aiming to completely replace the in-branch experience for tradespeople Our branches will still be open for in-person support, as well as by phone, but many of our customers have told us that fitting all their admin into their usual working day is challenging and having the ability to check costs, place orders, and pay invoices in their own time would make their jobs easier ”
He added: “We are also conscious that people expect better online services generally, so our new website will also improve the user experience for our DIY customers or anyone shopping without a trade account. We have made the site easier to navigate with clear product specifications, and a better range of deals and discounts ”

On solid ground
Angus Crichton, House & Garden Marketing Manager at ACO Water Management, discusses what merchants need to know about the principles of good ground reinforcement and what’s required for a successful installation.
For many landscapers and their clients, grass and gravel are firm favourites. The traditional look of a lawn is a long-held classic, while gravel comes in a variety of colours and finishes, offering an individual appearance and a satisfying underfoot crunch
When regularly traversed, however, grass and gravel can prove problematic It doesn’t take long for grass to be spoiled by muddy tracks or deep ruts, while gravel is notorious for scattering beyond where it is laid Gravel can also become an uneven series of troughs and peaks, making it difficult to move a wheelbarrow or push chair, for example.
To address the issue, some homeowners may ask landscapers to install paving. While understandable, paving seals over the rain-absorbing ground Therefore, merchants can suggest ground reinforcement tiles as an alternative that helps protect the environment, contributing to a sustainable drainage approach to water management
The gains of ground reinforcement
A clear understanding of how ground reinforcement grids work is needed for merchants to offer support to landscapers. Similarly, knowing why they’re necessar y is key to making helpful recommendations
Ground reinforcement tiles allow landscapers to deliver regularly traversed grass and gravel surfaces that withstand the impact of traffic while maintaining their appearance
The tiles are made of honeycomb grids which, once installed, transfer any load to the sub-base below, protecting grass from damage.
As dif ferent t i les are desig ne d to w it hst and dif ferent weig hts, merchants shou ld t a l k to clients ab out w het her t he sur face w i l l b e t ravers e d by p e dest r i ans or vehicles

GROUND REINFORCEMENT
22 PBM MAY 2024
Permeability
Along with keeping grass and gravel protected and in place, ground reinforcement grids allow rainwater to drain through them into the earth below On the other hand, impermeable paving slabs create runoff, which can enter the sewerage system and contribute to the sewage overf lows into our water ways
Given the numerous recent headlines, this is problematic and should be avoided
That said, paving over front gardens has continued to grow in popularity for many reasons and guidelines were introduced in 2008 that when a new drive is laid or renovated, rainwater must be dispersed on site and not allowed to drain into the road or pavement
Front-garden paving that cause runoff to discharge into the sewerage system require planning permission In England and Wales, this applies to paved surfaces over 5m2, while in Scotland, the rule applies to all drives whatever the area. Ground reinforcement
grids therefore offer an excellent solution, giving landscapers the option to deliver sustainable drainage while meeting current legislation
The steps to success
It is the unseen sub-base that does the heavy lifting in any paving project, supporting the weight above while allowing rainwater to drain through For a project involving ground reinforcement tiles to be successful, it is important that the right layers are correctly placed to ensure stability and longevity.
A sub-base is created by excavating the site and building up layers of MOT Type 3 The sub-base depth depends on the soil type and what sort of traffic is expected cross the surface Using a free draining aggregate, such as MOT Type 3, is essential for a high level of drainage This is particularly important if grass is to be sown, while sharp sand or topsoil (for grass) is needed for the laying course
To keep the layers of aggregate, sand or soil, and the earth beneath separate from one another, a permeable geotextile membrane should be laid below the sub-base and another on top of it These help each layer remain structurally sound while still providing reliable drainage If the grids are installed on a slope or likely to be subject to a lot of sideways force vehicles turning, for example pegs or nails
can be used to secure them, along with a suitable edging product.
ACO offers two ground reinforcement products: GravelGuard and GroundGuard
For gravel surfaces traversed by foot, bike or wheelchair, ACO GravelGuard is recommended It features a built-in geotextile that keeps the gravel separate from the sand layer beneath
Where car parking is involved, then ACO GroundGuard is the right choice It can withstand the weight of vehicles, can be planted with grass or filled with gravel, and can even be used to create parking spaces by inserting available white markers into the grid’s cells

Whilst “ never ” talking price or invoicing directly, the business will work with end users to agree a specification on bricks and tiles, including site visits and samples, ahead of leaving the merchant to “work with the customer to agree your price to supply.”
Managed showrooms
Highlighting that “being awarded the brick order can lead to securing the whole supply of products for your customer’s project, right through to the kitchen sink,” an effective display area can be a vital sales lead
Accordingly, Chiltern Brick and Tile’s service offering extends to working with branches to “design a fully managed brick showroom” on a merchant’s premises
Starting out from scratch, or even helping with an area in need of a revamp, the firm says it can provide comprehensive assistance to ensure a depot will become a ‘ go to destination’ when it comes to bricks It will deal with suppliers to ensure the range is focused to the particular regional requirements and will ensure sample displays are kept well-maintained and up to date.
As featured on its website, the business worked with Henlow Building Supplies to open a Managed Brick and Roof Tile Showroom at the merchant’s Biggleswade branch Featuring over 200 brick and tile samples, Chiltern Brick and Tile “complete the full process, from matching bricks, samples request, quoting, order processing to delivery all on behalf of Henlow Building Supplies ”
Selco partnership
For Selco, ‘e Brick Store’ has initially been created in four branches Enfield, Milton
A new partnership with Selco Builders Warehouse is just the latest example of Chiltern Brick and Tile’s range of support services for the builders’ merchant sector. PBM reports.
Keynes, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans with plans for a further expansion across its network as the year progresses Customers entering the branches can either simply match their brick with one displayed, or use the QR code to provide their information and request a follow-up call.
Howard Lu, the merchant’s CEO, said: “e Brick Store is taking our offering to tradespeople to the next level and securing Selco’s place as a go-to destination for bricks We now offer more than 200 bricks from a wide range of different manufacturers which will either be available in branch to collect immediately or delivered to our customers’ jobs within a matter of days in the quantities they require ”
Chris Magill added: “We have strong relationships with all the leading brick manufacturers across the UK and Europe and we will be ensuring we utilise our expertise and contacts to work alongside Selco to establish a premium service We are also creating and training ‘brick champions’ in each branch to ensure customers have the very best advice and guidance when it comes to selecting and purchasing bricks ”

BRICKS, BLOCKS & HARD LANDSCAPING
Showcased as part of the BDA’s
Earlier this year, the Brick Development Association launched the ‘Better with Brick’ campaign to highlight how clay brick — building on all its heritage and history remains “the ultimate modern building material.”
Material matters
Commemorating clay brick’s appeal as a building material for the ages, the BDA’s campaign is designed to proves there is more to the material than meets the eye. Presenting facts, stats and blogs which feature expert analysis and insights, Better with Brick is showcasing the ways in which clay brick’s “outstanding credentials make it the ideal building source for the here and now ”
Highlighting the advantages of excellent local availability and a lower carbon footprint compared to many alternative materials, BDA CEO Keith Aldis said: “With Better with Brick, our goal is clear: to reveal the timeless charm and unwavering reliability of clay brick, a material that has long been the cornerstone for builders, architects, and homeowners. This campaign will highlight why clay brick isn’t just a choice, but the best choice for your building needs ”
Unsung qualities
Covering topics that verify clay brick’s vital role in fulfilling our current and future building needs, the BDA says that Better with Brick is a chance to discover fascinating insights into this tried, trusted and beloved building material. Clay brick’s strength, reliability, design-friendly qualities and
“limitless kerb appeal” are among its renowned beneficial traits but what about its sustainable value aside from its inbuilt long-term weather resistance?
Furthermore, it argues how clay brick can be pivotal to decarbonising construction and contributing to the national effort to achieve net zero Similarly, the campaign covers how clay brick’s non-combustible performance is hallmarked by its A1 fire-rating As referenced in a recent issue of PBM, the initiative will also discuss how the Brick Makers Quality Charter manages its credibility in respect of clay bricks
Indeed, the inaugural campaign blog (available to read in full on the BDA website via www.rdr.link/mbd011) displays these key arguments. Referencing how “clay brick’s durability has been proven over thousands of years, ” and highlighting how current methods for assessing sustainability like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can under value the material, Keith Aldis writes: “Made from a natural material and produced locally, clay brick exemplifies a whole-life approach due to its exceptional durability and longevity, lowering the carbon footprint per year of use Clay brick can also be reused and recycled, avoiding waste
“The UK brick industry has shown its commitment to sustainability and reducing its
carbon footprint by investing £490 million in upgrades to processes and technologies over the past 10 years The UK’s clay brick sector is also directing significant investments into modern, efficient kilns and production lines that can produce high volumes of clay brick while minimising environmental impact.”
He concludes: “In an era where the sustainability of the built environment is crucial, clay brick emerges as the essential building material for today’s societal and environmental needs Strong, weather and fire-resistant, locally sourced and non-polluting, clay brick enables sustainable design that offers centuries of use and reduced lifetime carbon emissions ”
n Search for @brickdevelopmentassociation on social media to hear directly from brick manufacturers, architects and other industry experts about why clay brick is their preferred choice and join the conversation using the hashtag #betterwithbrick The campaign launch video can also be accessed via www.rdr.link/mbd012

Following recent changes to BS 8500, Richard Kershaw, UK Technical Manager at Cemex, discusses the importance of lower carbon concrete and cement.
In the bag
Intro duced in Novemb er 2023, the latest changes to BS 8500 the British standard for concrete have b een hailed as a substantial “leap for ward” for the industr y And w hilst there has b een a lot of industr y talk around the long-awaited intro duc tion of the ne w standard, w hat do es it mean for merchants and their trade c ustomers, and w hat do you really need to know?
C oncrete and cement are the lifeblood of the building industr y and essential for our modern world. After water, concrete is the world’s most used substance and for good reason It is abundant, strong, affordable, locally available and has infinite uses But as society and industr y advances, and the global climate action agenda reaches critical mass, we have to move with the times
There is a continuous drive to improve and innovate to stay at the sharp end and that’s exactly what is happening to concrete and cement. In a nutshell, the new standard BS 8500 now enables British concrete and
cement producers to supply lower-carbon options, broadening the array of available lower-carbon concrete mixes and opening up the market for more lower-carbon products to enter
In the mix
During the manufacturing process, cement production emits carbon dioxide through the fuel to heat the raw materials, and process emissions from calcining the calcium carbonate. The largest proportion of embodied carbon in concrete is attributable to the cement. However, the new update to BS 8500 provides options to reduce the mass of clinker and reduce the embodied carbon of concrete
In simple terms, BS 8500 will now allow the specification of combination/ternar y cements In technical speak, this means that CEMII/A-L and GGBS can be combined in a wider range of exposure classes Across industr y, extensive testing has been conducted on these new multi-component cements, which has led to the update and
the more widespread roll out of lower carbon concretes
Now with the potential to use these new cementitious products across all mainstream applications, the associated carbon saving could add up to an annual saving of one million tonnes of carbon dioxide
Cemex is proud to manufacture a wide range of high-quality British cements using locally quarried materials and additives, which help to build a better future We supply cement and fly ash in bulk tankers by road, rail and sea to customers throughout the UK for ready-mix concrete and precast concrete products
We also offer a wide range of bagged cement and cementitious products which are distributed to builders through a national network of builders’ merchant partners
In 2020 we launched Vertua, our first-ever net-zero CO2 concrete, which is

now part of an extensive family of products that includes lower carbon cements and concrete as well as aggregates, admixtures and mortar products Cemex continues to pioneer in this field with a pipeline of new, updated and re-categorised products joining the Vertua range
For example, Vertua Lower Carbon is our wide range of lower carbon concretes with bespoke designs enabling embodied carbon reductions 70% greater versus standard concrete (CEM I). The range can also provide additional benefits including increased durability, reduced heat of hydration and aesthetic finishes
The Vertua brand covers five sustainability attributes: lower carbon emissions, increasing energ y efficiency, saving water, incorporating recycled materials and optimising design Any products that bear the Vertua brand must meet requirements for at least one of these sustainable attributes, with the benefits clearly and transparently presented for customers on a fact label
Our top of the range, high quality Rugby Premium Cement now carries the Vertua Label to reflect its status as a lower carbon product, and comes in 30% recycled waterproof packaging, as part of our commitment to sustainable development.
Providing a new generation of products for tomorrow’s building industr y has to start today and making this happen is a really important part of the UK concrete and cement industr y ’ s roadmap to net zero, to help customers meet their own sustainability targets As the industr y pursues its decarbonisation goals and the demand for more sustainable products continues to grow at pace, now is a good time to start looking at what is available

Maximising batten setting
setting around eaves and ridges, Kevin Taylor, Training and Technical Support Manager at Marley, explains how merchants can best advise roofing contractors when it comes to establishing the maximum batten gauge for a roofing project.
To understand the maximum batten gauge on site, measure the full length of the tile and deduct the minimum headlap (for example: 420mm – 75mm = 345mm) Starting at the first datum point (the eaves course), mark up sets of the maximum gauge, until close to the ridge, and check where the top batten would fall in relation to the required datum point.
In most cases, the maximum gauge will need to be reduced to ensure the batten gauges are even and the minimum headlap is maintained For example, to ensure an even gauge, a maximum gauge of 345mm may need to be reduced to 340mm to ensure that all gauges are even, and a 340mm batten gauge would result in an 80mm headlap (420mm – 340mm = 80mm)
While it is technically not incorrect to install most of the battens at the maximum gauge and then adjust the last few, this can result in poor diagonal alignment with profiled tiles (known as doglegs) and, as such, should be avoided where possible.
Efforts should be made to not exceed the maximum gauge (often referred to as stretching or pulling the gauge) because this will result in insufficient headlap This may affect the weathering properties of the roof covering and void any guarantees or warranties offered by the manufacturer
Following this approach, the battens which should be 50 x 25mm in size, factor y graded to BS 5534 and ideally third party accredited can be set out and installed to ensure the batten gauge is even and the minimum headlap of the roof tiles is maintained

Tthere are several ways in which builders’ merchants can maximise the presence of abrasives and sanders. The first and most obvious is to have an eyecatching point sale that trumpets the benefits of the product Having something like this will have two effects on the customer: firstly, it will catch their eye in store and draw them in whilst if the display is truly memorable, the customer will remember seeing it and want to find out more about the product which could lead to a sale for the business
The second is investing in a dedicated test area instore. This provides the business with
a long-term asset and offers an area where staff can take customers to tr y the tool they have seen out on the floor and experience how it handles different surfaces It also enables the staff to showcase abrasives they believe will best meet the needs and requirements of the customer
In addition, it provides the business with an additional selling point because regular customers will know that they can tr y certain products before they buy them
This leads to the third and arguably most important point, which is training staff to understand the products they are
A key strength of the builders’ merchant sector is the ability to constantly evolve to meet the demands of the industry and their customer base. Ryan Jones, Business Development Manager in the construction sector at Mirka UK, discusses the opportunities sanders and abrasives bring to builders’ merchants — and how businesses can maximise the tools’ presence in store to sell more.

n Mirka has upgraded its DEROS and DEOS orbital sanders with a long-life electric motor that delivers 20% more sanding power to make light work of demanding jobs and heavy applications. In addition, the Mirka DEROS II and DEOS II feature a new visible LED indicator that is said to make it even easier for the operator to adjust the sanding speed whilst there is also a new on/off button and lockable speed function
For monitoring vibration levels, the smart, user-friendly tools are compatible with the myMirka app through Bluetooth technolog y
Operator comfort continues to be of a high standard, as the brushless electric motor is smooth-running with a low noise level, reducing stress when sanding for longer periods Moreover, the sander’s compact, ergonomic design is designed to make it easy to use
Low maintenance, a further hallmark of the Mirka sander range is compatibility with dust-free sanding Combine the DEROS II or DEOS II with a Mirka dust extractor and users can start sanding with dust-free abrasives for a safer and healthier

questions Taking on board the answers provided by our team, they will be fully prepared when they are talking to customers about the products And if there are any subsequent questions staff might be asked, they can confidently reach out to the Mirka representative for an answer.
When it comes to sales, tools are what can be deemed as an easy sell But in the recent past, traditional sandpaper (green and yellow) has been treated as an afterthought in stores, so at Mirka we are looking to change this by ensuring abrasives are perceived on the same level as the tools they are used on because we know that without the right abrasive, the tool cannot do its job effectively
Alongside showing the tools and abrasives on the same level, it is important to have a strong partnership between the merchant business and the supplier The way we make this partnership work effectively is through constant communication to gain valuable insights into the challenges the customer is currently facing, the opportunities available to them now and what their requirements will be down the line
This information is collated by our experienced team of technical experts, which helps ensure we know what the market wants in the short, medium and long term. In turn, this means we can provide the relevant tools and abrasives for their customer base to maximise the sales opportunities and revenue streams for builders’ merchants long into the future

Matching the advances in paints and coatings, Sarah Coussens, Head of Marketing Trade at Hamilton, explains how four years of research and development have resulted in a new highperformance brush that “delivers for every application.”
Keeping pace
In the quest for more sustainable, higher performing and more versatile finishes, paints and coatings have recently gone through something of an evolution
However, the tools used to apply these innovative coatings have not always kept pace with the same level of innovation until recently
S o, w hat do es it t a ke to desig n and manufac ture a ne w p aint br ush? Thes e a l l s er ve mu lt iple pur p os es: b olster ing
durabi lit y, improv ing we at her resist ance, heig htening f unc t iona lit y.
But what of the tools we use to apply them? The formula for creating a paint brush has not changed for several years; we wanted to innovate paint brush design to keep pace with paint and coatings technolog y
Outperforming nature
The first notable difference in the Perfection CleanEdge brush is the lack of natural bristle While still favoured by some decorators, the quality of this animal-borne bi-product is declining amidst ethical concerns. Natural bristle is also prone to shedding and while highly effective on oil-based paints, it is less compatible with water and chemical-based paints
While not wanting to lose the structure of natural bristle, a synthetic brush that mimics natural bristle has been developed, whilst outperforming its predecessor upon application The result is a brush that is easier to clean, and which does not require the usual ‘break-in’ period.
Intensive testing helped ensure that the
right balance between tradition and innovation has been struck the new CleanEdge filaments have been tested in laborator y conditions, by third party bodies, well-known paint manufacturers and, more importantly, by professional decorators All tests confirmed an increase in performance compared with natural bristle
High performance for high viscosity
High viscosity paints are commonly in demand for their improved coverage, simpler application, improved levelling and their enhanced adhesion properties. However, not all painting tools are well-suited for these thicker, more viscous coatings Many have longer, finer filaments more suited to thinner, low viscosity paints
Hamilton’s Perfection MaxStroke range suits this description, and has been designed with low viscosity, high fluid paints in mind
Where the new Perfection CleanEdge brush differs is its suitability to high viscosity painting applications It features stiffer, flagged tips that can be activated straight out of the packet. This, together with the
36 PBM MAY 2024 w w w. p r o f e s s i o n a l b u i l d e r s m e r c h a n t . c o . u k PAINTS, DECORATING & WOODCARE
innovative filament mix, empowers decorators to effortlessly push and drag thicker paints, while achieving a clean edge Accordingly, this not only enables decorators to apply high viscosity paints with speed and ease, but it also assures a superior quality finish.
Synthetic brushes the categor y occupied by the Perfection CleanEdge brush first enjoyed popularity in the 1990s as paints became more acr ylic in composition
The development was born out of practicality, with decorators demanding a more durable brush than those containing bristle due to the frequency at which they had to be cleaned when applying acr ylic paints
Water-based polyurethane formulations followed, giving a more controllable, higher quality finish but for the most part, synthetic painting tools lacked the same pace of innovation. That is until Hamilton realised that one synthetic brush is not enough to meet the demands of all decorators; instead, tool development had to start keeping up with paint improvements
There’s a lot more that goes into designing a new premium paintbrush than
many may consider That’s why Hamilton has its own cutting-edge research and development base and laborator y facilities based in the midlands and Sweden. From there, specialists are constantly looking at new paint formulations, decorating trends and working with major paint manufacturers
Not only does the Perfection CleanEdge brush replace natural bristle with synthetic materials, but it also contains less single-use packaging than many other products Plastic clam packs have been replaced by recyclable card, while only FSC Certified wood is used in the handle design.

A UK refuge for survivors of domestic abuse is receiving a makeover thanks to a donation from Bradite I Choose Freedom is a small independent charity that runs three refuges dedicated to supporting women and children who have been affected by domestic abuse
One of the properties, a former old peoples’ home, provides a safe environment for 40 children and 19 women, plus staff however the extensive main lobby area needed a complete repaint
Sophie Colletti, the charity’s Fundraising and Relationships Manager, said: “There’s a lot of traffic through there, and lots of sticky little hands, as you can imagine It’s important that this is a space that is bright and cheery ” Bradite has donated thirty litres of One Can, its all-in-one primer, undercoat and finish, for the project Being water-based, the paint has very low odour, which was an important consideration in a residential environment It is also quick drying, tough and scrubbable, able to withstand any marks from sticky hands and the occasional bash from a child’s buggy The repainting is being conducted by a team of volunteers

PAINTS, DECORATING & WOODCARE
TOOLS, FIXINGS & ADHESIVES
Lee Jones, Editor of PBM’s sister publication Professional Builder, recently attended the launch of the ‘ground-breaking’ new Norton Clipper batterypowered construction machine range at the Saint-Gobain Abrasives base in Stafford.
Unplug & play
If you were to ponder for a moment on some of the key drivers for change in construction, then pollution control and noise abatement would certainly be among them In relation to the former, the sector is the second largest emitter of particulate matter, whilst the latter can cause hearing problems and chronic stress reactions which themselves lead to elevated incidents of cardiovascular illness
At the same time there are real issues around build schedules for contractors who are constrained by start times on a project Clean air zones and quiet zones are on the march throughout our towns and cities, forcing builders to address the issue even before they’ve won the work
You can quickly add other health and safety issues to that list, with the debilitating
effects of HAVS and vibration white finger still ver y much a threat for tradespeople who are not taking the necessar y precautions Change can, however, often mean compromise but if you want an indication of just how far lithium-ion batter y technolog y has now come, the new Norton Clipper range of Batter y-powered machines shows that it doesn’t have to be that way.
The 72V, 10ah unit that powers ever y machine in the new range is said to be at the cutting edge of lithium-ion technolog y and it has been coupled with a consistency that is derived from the same Honda eGX brushless motor
All the products benefit from ease of use, including a single switch operation and, without a diesel or petrol engine, there are drastically reduced levels of vibration.
Indeed, the CS352 B Floor Saw transmits 1.99 vibrations per second compared to 5 56 for the petrol equivalent which makes for a much greater degree of comfort for the operator
Cutting emissions
Users can equally say goodbye to CO2 emissions and the particulate matter associated with an internal combustion
engine, whilst there’s said to be far less in the way of routine maintenance required Compared to their fossil fuel counterparts, batter y power also cuts down on noise
The Floor Saw equipped with the manufacturer’s Silencio diamond blade emits only 85db, for instance, which is two times quieter than a petrol engine machine sporting the same blade, and 27 times quieter than the petrol with a standard blade fitted
The batter y-powered Norton Clipper CM350 B Masonr y Saw, meanwhile, is unique to the market A built-in water tank reduces dust, foldable legs make it genuinely portable, and there’s a height adjuster for depth cuts to a maximum of 120mm, whilst it can accommodate materials up to 240mm for step cutting The batter y will provide 15 minutes of continuous use, with the capacity to make at least 60 cuts in standard concrete paving slabs more than enough to get you around a standard garden or driveway
Blade selection
Regardless of whether you ’ re using a petrol or diesel solution, the best way to limit unnecessary stress on the powertrain is with the correct blade selection That’s why Norton Clipper has designed a new range of blades for use with the new battery machines, which will enhance the efficiency of the motor and prolong the battery’s runtime.
42 PBM MAY 2024 w w w. p r o f e s s i o n a l b u i l d e r s m e r c h a n t . c o . u k
Whereas a standard blade is 2.8mm wide, the Silencio B eton Batter y blades are 2.5mm with 12mm high laser welded segments to give a longer product life and a higher cutting speed At 300mm, they’re also slightly smaller but by reducing friction and energ y usage will still outperform the
current 350mm blades with an extra five linear metres of cutting capacity when used on the CS352 B Floor Saw. At the same time, it is still possible to use the standard 350mm blades
The CS352 B Floor Saw also benefits from a built-in water tank whilst continuous use on a single charge is 20 minutes, which equates to at least 19 metres of new concrete. Meanwhile, the “tough and versatile” CFP13 WB For ward Plate compactor packs a hefty 13kN of centrifugal force It can be easily moved around via two wheels lowered at the rear
There’s a water tank, with a sprinkle bar at the front for asphalt applications, and it’s capable of 40 minutes of working time, or 370m2 of coverage.
Added to that is the CR11 B Rammer with bushes and a handle design that dramatically reduce the risks from vibration Its 50-minute runtime equates to at least 650 metres in a straight line
Lastly, the CT601 B Power Float features a guard around the base to protect the user and the added safety reassurance of the dead man ’ s handle simply let go and the machine will shut down It will perform for 40 minutes on one charge, which is 48m2 of fresh concrete. The batteries take up to 1.5 hours to fully charge.

Kirstie Cooper, Marketing Manager at Bond It, tells PBM about the development of the supplier’s new Superhero range.
We ’ ve all heard the saying the ‘devil is in the detail ’ Arguably, nowhere does this carr y more truth than when it comes to decorating and other commonplace repair and renewal work. Another notable product that forms part of the lineup is THE ONE. Like INCREDIBOND, the name is taken from what is said to be the solution’s biggest benefit namely, it is the “ one and only silicone sealant you’ll need for an enormous variety of jobs ”

When combined with a primer, it can also be used on wood, aluminium, chrome, concrete, brick and plastic.
Summing up, Kirstie commented: “Bond It already offers a wide array of products that have become incredibly popular amongst professional users, but that doesn’t mean we ’ re about to rest on our laurels Instead, we remain committed to developing new products and to enhancing existing ones to ensure ever-evolving benefits for our customers

In good spirits
Offering a customer perspective, Tibby Singh from PBM’s sister publication Professional Builder, puts the latest level from Stabila to the test.
Aspirit level is a tool that is used daily by almost all tradespeople and Stabila is a brand that you’ll find on nearly ever y jobsite Now that we ’ re living in a digital world, it came as no surprise that the manufacturer recently launched the
Stabila TECH 196 DL Spirit Level
It initially looked sophisticated, with all its buttons and screens, but it’s still simple to use. You could say its plug and play, but it’s powered by 2 x AA batteries, so let’s call it push and go
To start off, let’s clarif y that it has the standard vials to check horizontal or vertical areas on an object This addresses the issue of technolog y being good when it works S o, the level won’t let you down even if the batteries do because gravity is always right
It’s also got two digital displays for instantaneous measurements of inclinations and slopes. Depending on your preference,
n Marking the firm’s 135th anniversary, Stabila recently unveiled a limited-edition variant of its proven TECH 196 electronic spirit level with the launch of a special 40cm ‘Dark Shadow’ model
Featuring all the benefits outlined in the main review, the level boasts a a particularly stylish look thanks to its unusual matt anthracite finish
or the job at hand, the display modes can be switched from ° , %, mm/m, in/ decimals and as fractions It even has a reference mode which allows you to transfer angle measurements to other components
If you ’ re worried that you ’ re going to accidently press a button by mistake, it has a key lock to protect against that happening. en there is the option to illuminate the screen, which helps when working in poor lighting conditions
A clever touch is for the digital display to auto rotate when turning the level upside down, in a similar way to a phone screen, which saves having to turn your head or even misreading a reading
Having said that, you don’t even need to look at the tool to know something is level because it has an added optional acoustic guidance. ere are two levels of audible signals which is perfect for levelling kitchen units, meaning you can place the level on top
and adjust the legs without having to keep getting up to look at the bubble or needing a second pair of eyes to help
When you think of a level you instantly think it’s used to level something In some cases, however, some things need to be placed out of level, such as guttering and drainpipes to allow for the fall. I recently installed drainage pipes and this level helped to get the gradient I needed, which was a 25mm drop in ever y 1-metre run
Trying to calculate that without this Stabila tool may have been draining for many
Although it is sensitive it can withstand a lot, including from dust and water and, thanks to its IP 67 rating, the level can be temporarily submerged in water So, if it does get dirty, it can be cleaned easily
Even if it does take a slight knock, or if the temperature fluctuates, calibration of the electronic system is not necessar y. Also, it does have a bag which is ideal for protection when storing and transporting
e Stabila TECH 196 DL has ever ything you’d need and can simplify any tricky task, as ever ything is incorporated into this distinctive bright yellow aluminium profile

It
pays to prepare
Peter O’Loughlin, National Sales Manager at Talasey, reveals that all the feedback and indications it has received from its merchant customers and landscapers suggest that 2024 can be a year of solid performance for those businesses that are well prepared for landscaping season
Accordingly, the Scunthorpe-based company has issued “five essential tips” to help businesses make the most of landscaping season and buck the trend at a time when the UK economy and the general construction sector are facing challenges.
“It’s ver y easy to get distracted by some of the headlines around geopolitics, global logistics and even the UK economy but the fact remains that sectors such as ours are well versed in having a raft of contingencies to deal with a wide range of business interruptions,” explained Peter
“We have been planning for this year ’ s landscaping season for months to ensure seamless continuity in relation to the availability of products, stock levels and
bringing new products to market.”
Putting this into practice, Talasey has set out its five essentials that can function as a preparation checklist for merchants and landscapers:
1: Ensure customers have enough materials from start to finish
Merchants can add value by talking to trade customers/end users about the full scope of the projects they’re planning Crucially, it’s not just about establishing what products they need right now, but finding out if the project may be extended or if another part of the garden is also to be landscaped.
If they are, then factors such as batch matching come into play something which is especially key when ordering porcelain paving
2: Have the right accessories
Displaying hero products, such as porcelain pavers or composite decking, will always catch the eye but it is important that all the right accessories are also available to help customers install a project. For example, clip systems for decking plus jointing compound, jointing grout and priming slurr y for paving, and risers for decking and paving The list goes on!
Talasey’s Peter O’Loughlin explains that ‘preparation’ is the watchword for merchants as we enter landscaping season. PBM reports.
3: Alternative products
And if the availability of a particular product does become an issue, what alternatives are there? A simple example could be alternative thicknesses of pavers For example, some landscapers are used to working with 20mm porcelain pavers, but a growing number are switching to 16mm Different shades or size formats could also be considered
4: L andscaping trends
Keeping a finger on the pulse of landscaping trends helps merchants understand what the latest trends are that consumers and homeowners are looking at.
5: Ensuring displays look tip-top
Make sure displays are clean and have the correct point of sale (POS) and products A quick audit of product displays is a great tip for ever y merchant to show the products off to best effect
Peter added: “Preparation will be the key to a busy landscaping season this year, so we make no apologies for helping to remind our merchant customers of some simple but effective things that can go a long way to making a big difference to sales of landscaping products ”

With Paul Davies
T O T H E W I R E
Writing at the conclusion of another dramatic weekend of Premier League football, and the pendulum has shifted once again
Following home defeats to Villa (somewhat surprising) and Palace (especially so…) respectively, Arsenal and Liverpool remain locked together but now find themselves trailing Man City by two points
With a smattering of games to come before this page lands on your desks, everything could have changed even further City certainly seem to have the better fixtures, but there’s really not much in it and we’re at a stage of the season where even a draw could have seismic consequences. However, with the campaign not
B O U N C I N G B A C K
Lower down the leagues, Portsmouth look set to return to the Championship for the first time since the 2011-12 season And did you know that Pompey are one of only five clubs to have been crowned champions of all four tiers of English football? I certainly didn’t, but it is a feat they share with Wolves, Preston, Burnley and Sheffield United
Randomly, on finding the above nugget, I also discovered that Sheffield Wednesday are the only club to have changed their name after winning a league title they were known simply as The Wednesday for the first three of their four titles overall, with the current moniker introduced in 1929 Well, I found that interesting, but your mileage may of course vary
Delving into League Two, and all the headlines have been grabbed by Wrexham achieving their second successive promotion. The three slots available to get into League One (with an extra spot via the play-offs) mean that this has been rather more routine than last year’s battle with Notts County for the only automatic route out of non-league, and the Red Dragons were red hot favourites to bulldoze through the division before a ball had even been kicked, but we have to offer up some grudging admiration for how they’ve gone about things
The attached ‘Hollywood glamour’ has certainly attracted its fair share of detractors as the club has splashed the cash to attract a squad largely comprised of players from higher levels Indeed, as an AFC Wimbledon fan that saw our striker Ollie Palmer lured to
reaching its conclusion until 19th May and six rounds to go, there’s still time enough for this race to ebb and flow in any direction
Speaking of which, does anyone want to win the Championship this season? Now, this likely will have reached a conclusion by the time the mag is published, but it has been extraordinary to see Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich all stumbling towards the finish line
It has been an incredible season for Ipswich in particular, but all three seem to be giving their best Devon Loch to the extent that Southampton now have a slim chance of pipping them all at the post!
the Racecourse Ground in the January transfer window a couple of years ago, contributing to our subsequent relegation, I have experienced this first hand!
But the club and its owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have done things ‘the right way’, engaging with supporters and helping to boost the profile of the city itself I’ve certainly enjoyed the Welcome to Wrexham series, but I think the club is going to be in for a bit of a rude awakening next season. League One, as Portsmouth will testify, is not a cake walk and whilst they’ll still be one of the largest clubs, that is no guarantee of success
Oh, and amidst all the Wrexham hullabaloo, a quick word to Stockport County who actually head the table (at the time of writing !)
