HERE’S A LOOK AT JUST SOME OF THE IDEAS AND INITIATIVES THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING OVER THE LAST TEN WEEKS…
APPLAUSE FOR ADEE
Adee Phelan thanks the NHS with gift box campaign and pop-up salons. Celebrity hairdresser Adee Phelan has been giving back to the NHS throughout Lockdown by setting up his ‘Thank You to the NHS’ gift box campaign. At the beginning of Lockdown, Adee had an idea that he would like to give something back to the NHS heroes, so began collecting hair and beauty products to gift to NHS workers. After his appeal on social media went viral, multiple product companies showed their generosity by donating pallets of products to Adee to package up and deliver to hospitals and NHS workers. Having donated an incredible 10,000 boxes to 46 hospitals, equating to more than £865,000 worth of retail donations, Adee took the giving
back campaign one step further and launched a pop-up salon for the NHS. Located in Jacks Bar in London Waterloo and the salon has been providing haircuts free of charge for NHS workers. Guests were not only treated to drinks, a free haircut and blowdry, but received a gift box filled with hair and beauty goodies to take away too. Adee thanks everyone who helped: “None of this would have been possible without the incredible donations and the kind hairdressers who have volunteered to help with this. I am completely humbled by the generosity of the hairdressing community.”
ANDREW HEADS FOR THE HILLS ANDREW BARTON GIVES THE YORKSHIRE SHEPHERDESS HER FIRST HAIRCUT IN 30 YEARS. Amanda Owen the Yorkshire Shepherdess, published author and star of her own Channel 5 TV series Our Yorkshire Farm, hasn’t been in the chair for 30 years. Deciding it was time for a chop, she called on fellow Yorkshireman and celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton for the job. The Creative and Education Director of Headmasters also got to try his hand at shearing two of the farm’s resident sheep. In partnership with Yorkshire based business magazine Topic UK and yorkshirebusinesswoman.co.uk, Andrew headed for the hills (Dales) along with his kit to give Amanda a much-needed hair transformation – with Amanda’s chopped locks being donated to the Little Princess Trust, of which Andrew is the Hairdressing Ambassador and Headmasters is the official Hairdressing Salon Supporter. The Little Princess Trust gives hair and hope to children and young people by providing them with real hair wigs and funding vital research into childhood cancers. To everyone’s delight, five of

Amanda’s nine children were also ready and waiting to donate their own long hair to the charity, meaning Andrew had a full afternoon of work and a whole lot of hair donations to take back to the trust. Andrew said, “I’ve cut hair in some challenging places before, but I think Amanda’s barn is definitely the most interesting, with chickens, sheep and even a peacock watching us. I’ve created a look for her which is easy to manage whether she is tying it back to shear a sheep or needs to look fabulous quickly without too much effort. It was so wonderful, if a little overwhelming, that all the girls wanted to be like Mum. Their kindness will help put a smile on the face of another child as the wigs donated by the Little Princess Charity are made from up to 12 hair donations.”

With its provocative imagery and strong statement Toxic Fashion continues to deliver its sustainability message.” Says Anne.
CHAIR CHANGES THE FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCES NEW CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR. The Fellowship for British Hairdressing is delighted to announce Barry Stephens as Chair and Andreas Stavrou as Vice-Chair. PROJECT: Men is the Fellowship’s flagship men’s hairdressing mentoring scheme, launched in 2019. Led by award-winning hairdresser and session stylist, Jonathan Andrew, it provides a 12-month program of education, mentoring and opportunities for those interested in developing and improving their skills with men’s hair. The Project provides insight into all aspects of men’s hairdressing, from essential barbering techniques, shaving and clippering to colour, presentation skills and photoshoots. The team come together each month for a mentoring session, led by guest experts. If this sounds right up your street and you want to take part, you are invited to apply for one of the three places available. Applicants should fill out the form available at www.fellowshiphair.com and send three images of their men’s hair work. The closing date for entries is midday on Thursday 24 September 2020.

Themselves! “After fifteen long weeks of lockdown, with the uncertainty and worry of what we were facing, it is the best feeling in the world to be back in business. Pro Hair: Are you charging for PPE? H&Y: We actually gave a great deal of thought to whether or not we should be charging for PPE and finally took the decision to put a £3 surcharge on every salon bill to help recover some of the costs. Prior to opening there was such a lot of speculation and discussion on groups as to what we would need in order to operate safely and with the government guidelines. Actually on that note – the government guidance seemed to come very late in the day by which time most salons had made their own decisions as to what a ’safe’ environment should look like. I know a lot of salons went to huge lengths and expense by actually altering permanent structures to ensure they were ‘Covid secure’ but actually in the end, by the time we opened the official guidance was no longer the two metre social distancing which changed things slightly. Even salons that have only done the minimum requirement it’s still a costly exercise to get eveything right. We have four salons and have covered every measure possible that we feel necessary in creating a safe environment for both our team and clients visiting the salon. From temporary partitions between sections and the hair spa, permanent glass screens around reception, wall mounted hand sanitiser stations throughout the salon, disposable gowns, towels and face masks for clients and of course visors for the team – it’s a big expense, most of which needs replenishing every week.

and after 15 weeks that was a very daunting prospect. Once in the salon it was as if we’d never been away which was lovely, seeing all of the team – well the ones who were in on day one was so special too. My first client actually screamed with excitement! It was so funny, you’d think I’d just handed her a cheque for £10K, in fact I reckon she would’ve given the cheque back just to get her hair done – it was so lovely. The day continued like that with huge levels of excitement and love.
Pro Hair: Have you put your prices up and how are you explaining the rise to clients that query it? H&Y: We haven’t actually increased the price of any of our services. I know a lot of salons have and I guess they have to do what feels right for them. For us we took a different view and didn’t want our situation to impact on our clients so rather than increase the prices due to operating at a lesser capacity we simply extended our hours/week to ensure we could see everyone resulting in the salons achieving target without increasing the prices. Clients actually commented on the fact that we hadn’t inflated the prices and are incredibly grateful for that. As for the £3 surcharge for PPE nobody has complained about that and fully understands the reasoning behind it. Pro Hair: Are you seeing the same number of clients coming back through the door? H&Y: The first six weeks have been crazy busy! Obviously nobody wanted to wait any longer than needed to get back in the salon and rightly so, so it was all hands on deck and back to work. Weirdly as well as all of our returning clients we have seen a huge increase in the number of new clients making appointments resulting in a lot of new business. There definitely seems to have been a switch in people’s mindset as to how they book appointments,
16 PROFESSIONAL HAIRDRESSER
the percentage of clients who would normally book online or call to the salon have all been re-booking on departure to ensure they get the appointment they want. This is great for us as it not only shows huge commitment and loyalty from clients but also gives us the confidence that the business is moving in the right direction. Pro Hair: How do you see your salon business playing out over the next six months or so? H&Y: We definitely feel this new way of working is here to stay for the foreseeable. I can’t imagine anything will change anytime soon, so split teams, shift work and all the in-salon Covid measures will definitely be the same well into next year I’d imagine. It’s not a bad thing either, a lot about how we operate now is better for both the team and the clients. We always knew it was just a question of re-adjusting and getting used to the ‘new normal’ which with every passing day feels like second nature. Will we ever go back to the way things used to be? I’m not sure we will ever now. Pro Hair: Describe your feelings on the first day of re-opening? H&Y: Oh my goodness! Christmas Day hahahahahaha… I’m not even joking! Couldn’t sleep the night before, felt anxious, excited and a little nervous too. It was the most weird feeling to be finally going back to what we love,
Pro Hair: How are you and the team settling into the ‘new normal’ in the salon? H&Y: It’s weird isn’t it, whenever anything changes it only feels new until you’re used to it, then it becomes normal. A bit like when you get a new car, for the first week it’s a real thrill every time you climb in but then after a while it’s just your car. I’ve gotta say the team have been total stars, all embracing the changes and actually all loving the new way of working. We have two teams (A&B) who work two days on and two days off which felt very strange to begin with but now they all love it. Dare I say I think they all don’t mind wearing the visors either! Pro Hair: How are your teams coping and what seems to be the hardest things for them? H&Y: I honestly think the hardest thing for any of us is not working as a full team anymore. Hairdressing salons are like families so it’s kind of like not seeing half of your family, that’s tough. Pro Hair: Who was your first client back? MY: My first client back was Pat Elliot, a client I’ve had for about eight years and has become a dear friend who came to our wedding and is also my dentist actually hahahaha. You see what I done there, just wanted her to return the favour! GH: Mine was one of my ‘dog friends’ who actually wears her hair short and has it cut every three weeks so you can imagine how long it was! Hardly recognised her to be honest, but I could say that about so many clients who all came back with loads of long hair! It was crazy!!!
015_PH_SEPT20_Layout 1 17/08/2020 11:14 Page 17
Pro Hair: Have you had to deal with any really bad DIY lockdown hair disasters? H&Y: Believe it or not, no not really! As surprising as that sounds, we thought there would be loads. There were definitely a few ‘box dye’ home disasters but nothing we couldn’t fix. The most common and, has to be said, the funniest home do’s were the men whose partners had tried their hand at cutting! Oh dear... thank the lord we only got to see them weeks after the attack hahahahah. It was definitely easier correcting them once they had some new growth. Pro Hair: Are you seeing any emerging trends/micro trends? H&Y: Well actually there are a fair few clients who are considering growing their colour out to embrace their grey! I guess they feel that they’ve gone this far so why not give it a go? Erm… watch this space, I’ll give them six weeks. On the whole though I would say a lot of people are favouring more natural looks and colour results but I guess that comes from months of having to adjust to a more natural look. Pro Hair: What have you found is the best new way of communicating with your clients? H&Y: Throughout lockdown we direct messaged our clients via text and email to keep them up to date with everything salon related. We also continued with our online H&Y newsletter which became more about what the team were up to, so whether it was me baking cakes or Stewart from our Wynyard branch landscaping his garden, it was a way of keeping in touch with everyone as to what life was like for all of us. Direct messaging is something our clients have come to expect from us so it was more important than ever to keep that
going throughout lockdown – to let them know we were still thinking about them. We also asked every stylist to look at their own client list and reach out to anyone who they knew were on their own or vulnerable. A simple phone-call can be a lifeline to someone who doesn’t have anyone else and for a lot of clients, their visit to the salon is about much more than just great hair, it can be the highlight of someone’s week or month, so to have that taken away from you can be devastating. Pro Hair: What did you learn about yourself during lockdown? MY: Ooooh… many things! I taught myself to bake, painted the windows and basically I’m a domestic goddess hahahahaha. Oh and a very good carer to Gary (he was still playing on the broken leg from New Year) GH: I’m more patient than I thought, I’m lazier than I thought hahahaha and well… a very good husband. Oh and a fantastic gardener, but I know that already. Isn’t it strange how quickly we adjust to ’new things’ - new ways of living. By the end of lockdown it felt pretty normal to be stuck at home, with the thought of returning to the salon feeling like the strange thing. However, being back is wonderful and we wouldn’t swap it for lockdown (no way). We have never felt more proud to be part of this amazing industry – ‘our’ amazing industry. Friendships were strengthened and new ones made with everyone being there for each other which helped more than anyone could imagine. We definitely went through this together and although it may be sometime until we can say ‘it’s over’ it’s a wonderful feeling to know we have each other. We salute you hairdressing!

GETTING RETAIL RIGHT MARCELLO MOCCIA, OWNER OF ROOM 97 DISCUSSES MAKING RETAIL WORK FOR YOU
Our salons are located in outside shopping malls, so retailing has always been an important part of our business. In Wakefield, we have a footfall of about 50,000 a day and 40% of our retail is by walk-ins. We had been toying with the idea of launching an online shop for a while, but something always got in the way. Then, when lockdown happened, I had time to think it through and start work on it. Our clients were ringing to purchase their products from us which we posted from the salon. So, client demand proved that an online shop was viable – and lockdown was the right time to launch it. Our clients were still looking for advice and professional products even though they weren’t coming into the salon. The first thing I did was talk it through with my IT guys from Creative Impacts, and my account manager at L’Oréal Professionnel. The hardest thing was communicating exactly what I wanted. I’d done some research into other sites – what worked, how easy they were to navigate – so I knew what I wanted. I invested about £2,000 into launching the platform, in the first week we got £8,000 of sales so it more than paid for itself! It provided us with a much-needed revenue stream while the salons were closed. We sent newsletters to our clients and posted about it on social media, and we’ve been delighted with the response. We still get clients coming into the salon to buy products, but now they can also buy their products while they’re at home. Many are happy to buy them from us rather than a big, multi-national website, supporting an independent business and getting hair advice at the same time. And it’s that personal touch that makes a difference. Now, it’s not just a local service, we have been shipping products
internationally as well. The lockdown taught us that the world is moving towards digital – luckily you can’t get a haircut online, but you can buy everything else. So we need to utilise that platform for our own businesses and ensure clients are buying their products from us rather than Amazon or other large websites. I now have someone that looks after the online shop as it is already growing and has so much potential. We currently sell the products we have in the salon, but there are opportunities to branch out and offer brands and products clients are asking for. My advice for any other salon thinking of doing this is to do your research, work with a team who know the online retail world and make sure customer service is just as high on the online store as it is in your salon. It’s that that will set you apart. MARCELLO’S TOP TIPS FOR LAUNCHING AN ONLINE SHOP 1 Make sure you have the right IT team and take their advice. 2 Talk to your partner brands – L’Oréal really helped us with rules and regulations for retailing products online, what we could and couldn’t do. 3 Look at the competition and see how they work, the customer journey and how easy it is to use. 4 Send out communication frequently to your customer base and regional area. 5 Get someone who is IT savvy to project manage your online business. Our business development manager has a fashion retail background which has proved invaluable. She can focus on it and really drive it forward. YOUR HAPPY PLACE WITH THE STRESSES OF LOCKDOWN, JOB INSECURITY AND GENERAL ANXIETY ABOUT THE PANDEMIC AND THE FUTURE, IT’S EASY FOR STYLISTS TO BRING THOSE WORRIES INTO THE SALON AND LET IT AFFECT THEIR WORK AND THE REST OF THE TEAM. THE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING OF YOUR TEAM HAS NEVER BEEN MORE IMPORTANT, BUT A MOTIVATED TEAM MEANS A HAPPY WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND BETTER RESULTS. WHILE IT’S EASY TO FOCUS ON THE FIGURES, SALON OWNERS ALSO NEED TO SPEND SOME TIME CONSIDERING THE TEAM. JAMIE BROOKS, CO-FOUNDER OF THE AWARD-WINNING BROOKS & BROOKS SALON IN CENTRAL LONDON, LOOKS AT THREE COMMON ISSUES IN THE SALON RIGHT NOW.
1 PROBLEM: LACK OF PASSING CLIENTS Client’s perceptions of their hair has changed dramatically during lockdown. There are those who have tried cutting and colouring it themselves and it needs rectifying; then there are those who have done nothing to their hair and have left it to their stylist to deal with. Hair has been such a topic of conversation during lockdown that many of their expectations have changed. Luckily for many of us, the problems we expected haven’t materialised. Many didn’t do anything drastic to their hair and when they come to the salon they are in no rush, they have more time and because we’re not squeezing them in, there is no stress. Clients have appreciated us, waited for us and have come back to see us. However, the biggest problem is lack of passing trade and new clients. Hotels are closed, offices are empty and people aren’t travelling very far. Social media and communicating with your existing client base is essential. Encouraging clients to rebook before they leave the salon is more important than ever. Who knows when town and city centres will be hives of activity again? 2 PROBLEM: LOW MORALE When it’s extra busy morale is good because everyone is occupied and positive; it’s when it starts to get quiet and there’s a lull then morale can dip. Whereas before there was always something to do, now there is nothing extra that they can get on with. We work in two teams on different shifts so half the team aren’t seeing each other. Some of the team haven’t seen each other since March! Now that the initial rush has calmed down, we are planning to get everyone together, encourage drinks after work. Hairdressing is very social, especially amongst the younger team members and they struggle when there are no social aspects. The hardest thing as a salon owner is to manage everyone’s expectations and their careers. There are no photo shoots, no external
education, no shows and no session work to enthuse them. We have started training sessions on mannequin heads rather than live models – their enthusiasm might be dampened and we have to keep them motivated. 3 PROBLEM: STRESSED STAFF There’s no question hairdressers are used to being busy, but coming back from lockdown was a shock for many, with extended hours and extra days the new norm. The environment in the salon is calmer but the process around it is more convoluted – combs, grips, scissors all need sterilising after every client, the area needs sanitising. It’s the process that clients don’t see that can cause the extra stress. Because the salon has less people at any one time, the energy and the buzz is missing and stylists need this to up their game. Every day is the same – there are no busy or quiet times anymore – and some stylists are struggling with the new norm. We are working in shifts so we are actually working less hours a week, but then that means salary is affected. When stylists look at their column, and see the gaps, they are worried. The other problem we have is that everyone has more free time than they have ever had before. During lockdown everyone did what they had always wanted to do – learn to bake or learn a new language. So they have time for negative thoughts and time to dwell on things. Plan more team days out, offer new incentives and look at new ways to interest and excite them. Utilise quiet days for team work, staff training, get team members involved in coming up with new ideas and initiatives for the business. Mental and emotional wellbeing shouldn’t be forgotten and is just as important for a happy, successful salon. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OR GO TO www.rdr.link/HS002

TIPS FOR REBOOKING NATASHA GROSSMAN, GENERAL MANAGER AT HOB SALONS EVALUATES THE IMPORTANCE OF REBOOKING.
WHY DO YOU THINK SO MANY SALONS AREN’T VERY GOOD AT REBOOKING? Many salons don’t consider rebooking to be a priority and are focused on other aspects of the business. They don’t discuss rebooking at the beginning of the client’s journey in their consultation, where they get agreement from the client that the hair cut or colour will last a certain amount of weeks and the client will need to rebook. Many stylists don’t have the confidence to tell the client when they need to rebook and usually ask instead. By asking an open-ended question can often lead the client to say they will call, rather than telling the client they are going to be booked in for eight weeks and can move the appointment if needed. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY NOW? Rebooking clients is more about the client coming back; it’s safeguarding our future business. Whilst living in these unprecedented times, all clients that rebook their appointment will always be considered a priority versus a client that hasn’t pre-booked. When you have clients that have rebooked, it is far easier to ensure targets are achieved as you have already ‘banked’ bookings. Filling the gaps is far easier when there are pre-booked appointments than if there are no future bookings in the diary. We want our client’s hair to always be looking great. They are an advert for us when they are walking along the high street or down the aisle in their local supermarket. So, if they leave their hair cut and colour for longer than necessary, it’s not going to look as good and this is a representation of the salon. HOW DOES REBOOKING AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS? Rebooking has been, and will continue to be, one of the most powerful tools within our business. When future bookings are high you naturally have a better week than if the future appointments were low. Not only does rebooking increase the weekly turnover, it also ensures that the client frequency goes up too. If you are able to get a client to rebook every eight weeks rather than every 12 weeks, this means that you will see a client six times a year rather than four times a year. The higher the frequency of the client, the higher the turnover.
WHAT METHODS CAN SALONS USE WHO AREN’T VERY GOOD AT REBOOKING? We offer a rebooking discount of 10% off when a client pre-books their next appointment before leaving the salon within an eight-week period. This encourages the client to come back more often if we can get them back within an eight-week timeframe and therefore allows us to offer the additional discount. We have a company Top Five report that we publish every Monday where we recognise the top five employees for different categories. One of the categories we have is ‘book backs’ and it highlights the book back percentage each team member achieved. We aim to have a 70%+ rebook percentage as a company and 80%+ is exceptional. Recognising your team when they rebook goes a long way. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR SALONS THAT AREN’T VERY GOOD AT REBOOKING? 1 The best tip, and the simplest one, is just to keep talking about rebooking. Discuss how long you need to see your client again at the beginning of their consultation when agreeing the cut and colour. 2 Discuss rebooking their appointment in the middle of their service and at the end when you’re showing your client the finished result and they are telling you how much they love it! 3 We are continuously educating our teams and role play with them, to ensure that the delivery of how to get a client rebooked comes across as being confident and not forceful. 4 This is the time to sell yourself and you don’t want to sell yourself short by not rebooking your clients! You may see the client in the salon, but with another stylist and wonder why she’s gone to someone else. It’s about taking responsibility of your own business and making sure that every single client that you do comes back to you. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OR GO TO www.rdr.link/HS003

MINDSET MATTERS CAROLINE SANDERSON IS THE SALON JEDI AND COACHES SALON OWNERS ALONGSIDE RUNNING HER OWN AWARD-WINNING SALON IN SCOTLAND. SHE TEACHES MINDSET AS A FOUNDATION TO BUSINESS SUCCESS AND USED HER TIME IN LOCKDOWN TO UPGRADE HER ACADEMY – THE FIRST ONLINE TRAINING PROVIDER TO BE ACCREDITED BY THE GOOD TRAINING GUIDE. HERE SHE TELLS US WHY MINDSET MATTERS MORE THAN EVER POST-COVID.
If anyone had told us last year that the world would be in lockdown in 2020, businesses forced to close and the masses walking around in masks we would have said things like “don’t be silly, you’re mad, the world would never shut down, the economy would never close, there is no way the government would pay 80% wages” and so on. But here we are, and here is one positive to learn from this situation. If our wildest nightmares can become manifest... so can our wildest dreams! Now the majority of us have opened our doors again what does the future hold for us? It holds exactly what we expect it to hold. The thoughts we think, the words we speak and the actions we take today, are creating our tomorrow. Most of us don’t realise that so many of our thoughts are negative. We have over 60,000 thoughts a day most of which are negative. It’s our human survival mode. Thoughts are energy and when that’s released the energy is like a magnet attracting more of the same energy to it. You may have heard the saying ‘like attracts like’. When we think a negative thought we attract more of them. We need to interrupt this pattern and consciously move our thoughts to better feeling ones to attract more of them. When we feel better we take better actions towards our goals. Let’s look at an example of how our thinking is affecting our future. Salon Owner 1 has used lockdown to learn new skills. Their attitude is that they’re grateful for the time to recharge and create new goals. They look at exactly where their business was at the point of closing and they ask empowering questions like “what do I need to fix and what changes do I need to make going forward to build an even more successful salon post lockdown?” Asking questions like this triggers the subconscious part of the brain that will find answers. They took time to reconnect with what they really want and switched off from the constant fear from mainstream media and scrolled past negative posts so they can keep their focus on what they want. Salon Owner 2 has spent lockdown in fear. They’ve been unable to see clearly any path forward because the brain
can’t think clearly or find solutions while in fear. They have spent day after day watching and reading the news, reading any article that pops up in their live feed about it and engaging in social media ranting, blaming and shaming. They do this because of fear and they feel powerless, which is building their fear even more. They have spent time thinking about all the reasons things are going to be tough. They see so many others do the same (because their brain is giving attention to it) that this crystalises their belief even further: they are right, and the future is bleak. So why is salon owner 1 absolutely going to get better results than salon owner 2? Because salon owner 1 is using the three keys of creation. They are creating their future from: ● The thoughts they think ● The words they speak ● The actions they take Salon Owner 1 is sending out positive thoughts and attracting more thoughts like them. They are using their words to ask for solutions and they are taking inspired action towards their goals. Salon Owner 2 is sending out negative thoughts and attracting more of the same, their words are being used to make negative fixed mindset statements and they aren’t taking actions to grow their business as they don’t believe they can. The quicker we realise we are the creators of our future by what we think, say and do today, the faster we can turn this around into a brighter salon future! RECRUITMENT DRIVE GAVIN MILLS IS OWNER OF BAD APPLE HAIR SALONS, NINE SALONS IN THE WEST MIDLANDS AND LIVERPOOL, AND AN ACADEMY IN WOLVERHAMPTON. WITH AN ACTIVE CLIENT BASE OF 38,000, THE BRAND HAS ITS 70-STRONG TEAM AT ITS HEART AND A REPUTATION AS A FIRST CLASS EMPLOYER – OUTSTANDING TRAINING (INCLUDING A £2K ANNUAL BUDGET EACH TO SPEND ON EDUCATION), AND BENEFITS INCLUDING INCOME PROTECTION, LIFE INSURANCE AND A 24/7 VIRTUAL GP SERVICE ARE JUST SOME OF THE PERKS ENJOYED BY STAFF. HERE GAVIN TELLS US WHY SALON OWNERS SHOULD BE TAKING NEW APPRENTICES AND TAPPING INTO SUPPORT FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
While these feel like uncertain times we plan to take on 20 assistants/apprenticeships from August – usually we offer 10 places but by tapping into the government’s support we’re going to double this, and would encourage other salons to do the same. As an industry we’ve been struggling in recent years to fill apprentice roles with good quality candidates, but one positive outcome of the pandemic is that hairdressers have become more valued and proven to be a solid profession, by and large surviving the COVID fallout that has hit the high street. It might be tempting to freeze recruitment to keep expenditure at a minimum but it’s really essential that we help drive talent within the group and this is the same for all salons – as a business you need to keep generating new hairdressers to give existing staff the opportunity to grow and have movement within the structure. How can you move your team up the pay-scale when there’s no one to take their place on the lower rungs of the ladder? More than ever, the importance for home grown apprenticeships and bringing new talent through is crucial to our industry. This is a chance to get a host of youngsters in through the door and onto the floor - we’ve had over 200 applicants between 16-18 years olds apply for apprenticeships with us in just one month so the demand for learners/apprenticeships is still very much there. We all know what it’s like to recruit for staff only to find that they need a certain amount of retraining to get them on track to represent your brand on the salon floor, and when we can bring staff through from initial training onwards we have much better outcome for them in the long term – what salon doesn’t want stylists progressing through the ranks who know your salon culture inside out and live and breathe the way you do things, because that’s how they’ve been trained! We’re treating the government’s support with the extra £2,000 on top of the existing £1,000 support for us as a bonus, and putting it towards hiring more apprentices. Rather than seeing it as a quick cash injection to the business we believe this is an opportunity to make a long term investment into well-educated staff.
24 PROFESSIONAL HAIRDRESSER
We are now also offering three fully paid jobs and qualifications (Level 2) to people who want to get into the industry but who are over 25 and may have lost a job or want a career change. Bad Apple is paying via its academy the full cost of the qualification and we’ll be paying a full salary so that they can earn while they learn at a decent rate that will realistically attract and keep quality team members. So often we hear of people who are older and want to retrain but it isn’t financially workable. With some short term investment this could be a way to successfully integrate reliable staff with great people skills who will more than pay their way when they qualify. We can’t wait to restart the NVQ training/education within the group and have these apprenticeships develop into amazing future talent within the industry. Education is core to Bad Apple’s success, delivered by our in house award winning education team. Over 24 months every week in our academy we go above and beyond the basic training the NVQ level 2 and level 3 has to offer. Bad Apple Classics’ programme aims to continuously push quality training throughout the industry. The apprenticeship training incorporates 14 classic cuts and 10 classic colours, three classic blowdries, as well as Barbering, Afro, Textured hair (not on the curriculum but a non-negotiable for us – all apprentices are trained in afro and textured hair) and a full five step consultation training programme. Tapping into this government funding is key to keeping the industry fresh with a wealth of new talent educated to high standards and I hope that salon owners nationwide are able to take advantage of it to grow their team, especially if they’ve struggled with recruitment in the past. WHEN HAIR CARE MEETS SELF-CARE
TOP TIPS Introduce the right product brand that suits your ethos Educate your clients and offer services that are not normally available
Dan Mewies, founder of Mewies & Co in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire and Authentic Beauty Concept UK Ambassador shares his experience of creating a thriving, mindful salon with the customer and community at its very heart. A HOLISTIC CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE Mewies & Co doesn’t view itself as a salon; it’s a hair spa. This ethos of holistic care extends beyond hair and informs everything they do. By embracing a holistic approach to customer service Mewies & Co has created a customer experience that has a truly different feel and in turn they’ve created a very individual salon. “We’ve spent a lot of time researching and understanding our customers’ wants, needs and lifestyle and this has informed every element of Mewies & Co’s mindful offering. From our product partner, to the interior design and the services offered, our clients are at the heart of every decision made. Our business growth is built on a client’s journey and salon experience. We have always listened and responded to our clients and been mindful of opportunities in order for us to fulfil our vision for Mewies & Co.”
Build a community with other like-minded businesses to grow your spa Educate your team and let them experience your client journey
026_PH_SEPT20_Layout 1 17/08/2020 11:16 Page 27
“Our dedicated team is at the heart of our business and the customer’s overall experience. It’s so important for the whole team to share the same vision for the salon and our long-standing team who tend to our client’s needs and provide each bespoke service – they are ultimately the reason customers return time and again.” MINDFUL BY DESIGN Mewies & Co’s mindful approach to hairdressing is also reflected in its design. They’ve created a hushed, spa-like nordic design using natural materials, rustic finishes and earthy green walls to complement the greenery throughout the salon and in turn reduce stress levels and aid the mindfulness ethos practiced. “Taking cues from our product line, Authentic Beauty Concept, and inspiration from one of our favourite places, Ragdale Hall Spa, we’ve provided customers with a soothing atmosphere, created a dedicated hair spa to feel like an independent retreat and maximised space for clients to relax and unwind.” “The building which we fully refurbished last year reflects our values and is just beautiful. This ethos extends to the respect we have for the building and we’ve sought to maintain its integrity and many of its original features. As a former coaching house, it would have been at the heart of the neighbourhood – and that’s something we’ve looked to restore through our open-door policy inviting local like-minded businesses to join us in creating a wellness hub and in turn offering our clients a more holistic experience and securing our place as an integral part of the community. We don’t view ourselves as a salon; we’re a hair spa. Working with Authentic Beauty Concept products in the salon, Mewies & Co has built a tailored hair spa to offer a holistic experience that reflects the ethos of the brand. Here, clients receive a bespoke hair spa experience with their prescription of haircare and treatment. They also receive a head and hand massage with essential oils, eye mask, tranquil music and flat backwash allowing them to truly escape the world and enjoy being in a retreat for a few hours. “Clients love the tranquility of appointments and the uplifting experience that a visit to the spa brings. Our clients tend to visit for a couple of hours of rest and relaxation - not just a cut or colour which allows us to really look after them and allows them to step into our world for the full Mewies & Co experience.”
BUILDING A LIKE-MINDED COMMUNITY Mewies & Co has a strong sense of community. They work with local-like minded businesses to provide a diverse offering of services to their clients – both as part of the salon and as a hub for those passionate about a mindful lifestyle. There’s a yoga studio which provides classes most days of the week, run by a local practitioner and another guest space rented to local businesses that have a similar ethos – it currently hosts services including acupuncture, meditation and reiki. They also work with local independents including a fruit and veg shop and vegan café to provide clients with healthy snacks and local mocktails. “If you’ve got extra space, look out for local businesses that might not necessarily have premises yet but will complement your offering and your brand values and invite them in to build a real, organic community. It’s a win-win for each other’s like-minded customers too.” “We work with local businesses to raise mutual awareness for each other and in turn promote our area. Don’t think of it as competition think bigger than just your own business – it’s almost a placemaking exercise. We’re fortunate to have Leicestershire’s only Michelin star restaurant on our doorstep and along with a number of other independents - we’re all working together, fostering a sense of community, purpose and connection to put our village, Mountsorrel on the map.” Dan’s passion to really understand the customer, sense of community, strong relationships with local businesses and authentic belief in what he’s creating as a business marks out Mewies & Co as a truly different hairdressing space. Business partners Noel Halligan and Corey Taylor opened NOCO Hair 18 months ago and won 2019 Independent Business Newcomer before 2020 brought lockdown and a closed business. After the initial shock of having no clients coming through the doors, Noel and Corey looked at how they could get their business ready to reopen in a new kind of world where social distancing was the new way of working. “When lockdown started everyone was panicking, it was very negative in the press and on social media. But all we could see was an opportunity. Hairdressing is a recession-proof industry and we could sense that we would be busy when we could reopen. As a new business we had big goals and a business plan which was totally knocked off course. However, the turbulence doesn’t change the goal; it just means keeping focused and riding the storm.

“So within six months we had gone from an eight-station salon to a 13-station salon. That wouldn’t have happened if it hadn’t been for lockdown as we would have carried on being busy. Having the flexibility during this time was great as it meant we could create a safe environment and it presented us with opportunities that we hadn’t seen before.”
After
Noel Halligan, NOCO Hair
We had initially spent a lot of time and money designing the salon and was happy with how it worked for us. We had a successful retail area, flexible work stations and plenty of space for clients and team members. We had five back-to-back island stations and we had purposely put the electrics in the floor so we could move all the furniture around for when we do photo shoots, host yoga events or host shows in the evening. It gave us a flexibility to use the space in different ways. Unbeknown to us this was perfect for the new norm, as we could take every other island station and move it around the salon to cope with social distancing.
After
We had a beauty room in the salon which we had never really focused on and there was a crack in the window. When the weather got hot the crack expanded so it was a job that was on the list, but we never got around to sorting it out. So, when the salon was empty we decided to replace the window, but to do that we had to take part of the wall down. This made us think about the ROI of doing hair there in place of beauty, so instead of rebuilding it, it made perfect sense to extend the salon and put two extra stations in this area. With the salon closed we played around with reshuffling the retail area. It worked out that there was more than enough space for another station. So within six months we had gone from an eight-station salon to a 13-station salon. That wouldn’t have happened if it hadn’t been for lockdown as we would have carried on being busy. Having the flexibility during this time was great as it meant we could create a safe environment and it presented us with opportunities that we hadn’t seen before.” CLICK HERE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OR GO TO www.rdr.link/HS008

Ammonia-free and enriched with yoghurt extract and soothing organic medicinal plants, Kemon’s Yo Color System is a sensorial way to handle colouring: extremely comfortable, it does not give off odours, is non-irritant and its texture — rich, creamy and soft, just like yoghurt — is pleasant to apply and gentle on the scalp. The key ingredient in the system is Velian Complex, a combination of: ● Mullein – with soothing powers ● Helichrysum – with calming and refreshing powers ● Flax – with protective and emollient powers ● Dyer’s Chamomile – with antioxidant powers The result is a patented blend of organic extracts.

THE YO COLOR SYSTEM CAN BE OFFERED TO CLIENTS THROUGH A VARIETY OF SERVICES: MULTI-SENSORY COLOUR RITUAL The three-stage Yo Color System offers the opportunity to perform a complete beauty and wellness service during which the processing time is enhanced by little opportunities to indulge in wellness and relaxation. NaYo A soothing, soft and comfortable colouring treatment which, in two or three phases cares for the scalp and hair structure, for exceptionally shiny and long-lasting results. NaYo’s yoghurt base and high percentage of ingredients from natural origins immediately position it as a carefully considered and targeted colour service, with significant added value. TREATMENT TRIO Yo Color System consists of three different products, with different pH values but synergistic and harmonious shades: NaYo, Yo Green and Yo Cond, aim to treat the various needs of colour-treated hair in a targeted way at the base, mid-shafts and ends through a localised application producing shiny and long-lasting colour. NaYo: Completely covers the natural roots with a formula that is gentle and highly tolerated by the scalp. YO GREEN: Restores the level and tone of sensitised hair by conditioning and restructuring. YO COND: Highlights the tones and nourishes hair, making it lustrous and silky conditioning and restructuring.
COLOUR INFUSION Yo Green’s application procedure is strongly reminiscent of the concept of infusion: it involves immersing blonde or colour-treated hair in the soft, fluid mixture of the product, which exerts a restorative action on hair both in terms of level and tone, and in terms of substance and shine. Hair is infused with colour and energy, to make the colour more attractive, more expressive and longer-lasting. COLOUR REGENERATION Yo Cond is a colour conditioner which revives the tone of colour-treated hair in just three minutes, instantly restoring mid-shafts and ends to a “just-been-done” effect; incredibly useful for instant toning for blondes of any type, indispensable for keeping strong fashion tones full of life between colourings. The exclusive Yo Hand Cream, which is also enriched with yoghurt extract and Velian Complex, has been specifically formulated to guarantee hydration and softness; it is easily absorbed, non-greasy and gives hands a velvety soft touch. The rituals for application, distribution and massage were designed to offer a personalised and highly professional service capable of enhancing the effectiveness of Yo Hand Cream and giving each client a pleasurable experience during the colour processing time.
