Train ride It goes without saying that the past six months have thrown up an unprecedented series of challenges for the sector. Many businesses, from single installers to larger contractors, have been forced to make rapid alterations to how they operate – such as focussing on different sectors, altering their size, or, and sadly in some cases, leaving the sector altogether. Undoubtedly the pandemic has brought with it dramatic consequences for a significant number of installers and engineers. While individual circumstances have differed wildly, one thing to which many have turned is training. Re-skilling, up-skilling or just acquiring more knowledge is always time well-invested, and thanks to the surge in digital options available many installers have taken these opportunities. While it is fair to say that some elements of training were already moving towards digital delivery, the lockdown encouraged training providers and manufacturers to hit the ‘fast-forward’ – delivering ever-enlarging volumes of training materials and advice online, some of which is freely available. On page 42 you can find out how one training provider altered its offering and how it sees the training environment evolving in the future. Heating engineers and plumbers have a broad set of skills, and as the hot summer weather fades it is likely they will be called upon in their droves as the heating season commences. In this issue you will find a Domestic Boilers Supplement with some of the latest advice and solutions for this vital part of the market. Additionally, following the recent announcement of the £2bn Green Homes Grant, businesses offering ‘renewables’ may be hoping for a surge in demand. Installers may also consider re-skilling to be able to offer solutions such as heat pump installations or solar thermal following the publication of the details of the scheme. You can find more industry reaction to this initiative on page 10. Competency and skills are at the heart of the heating and plumbing sector. By taking advantage of the growing range of online training options installers can develop their knowledge and, hopefully, rebuild their business.

“Competency and skills are at the heart of the heating and plumbing sector.”

IDEAL BOILERS REBRANDS ‘SAFER TOGETHER’ CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY BAXI Baxi is working with its colleagues and the installer community to spread awareness of its new ‘Safer Together’ campaign, designed to keep its teams, installers and their customers safe at all times. The campaign has been created to provide reassurance and support for Baxi’s sales and training teams, as well as installers returning to work in customer’s homes. Detailed information packs, training centre signage, marketing communications and safety packs have all been tailored to support the campaign’s safety messaging. The company has also produced a 3-step safety guide for installers to follow when working in a customer’s home. A homeowner version has also been developed to help reassure customers. David Cook, Sales Director at Baxi, said: “Above all, the safety of our customers and colleagues remains our top priority, and we are confident that the new campaign will provide the guidance and reassurance that we are doing everything we can to ensure safety throughout our business operations.” To find out more about the campaign www.rdr.link/pt001

Ideal Boilers is to rebrand as Ideal Heating, to future-proof the positioning of its increasingly diverse range of products and solutions. For a number of years, the brand has offered cylinders and controls with its range of domestic combi, system and heat-only boilers – alongside a comprehensive product range for the commercial market. This move is designed to communicate Ideal’s total heating system offering, with further expansion into low carbon technologies planned for the coming months. Chief Marketing Officer at Ideal Heating, Jo Shepherd, commented: “We’re keen to dispel any misconceptions that could come with our name – for years we’ve offered so much more than just boilers, and there’s more exciting innovation to come. Our ambition is to be the number one choice for installers, consumers and businesses when selecting a heating and hot water system. “We believe that having a more holistic, future-focussed brand will help us achieve that, supported by an industry-leading product range, compelling installer incentives and the creative marketing activity we’ve become famous for.” The Ideal Heating logo is recognisable to those who are familiar with the Ideal Boilers brand, but with a green dot on the ‘i’ in place of the previous red one, to reinforce the association between Ideal Heating and a more sustainable future. Jo Shepherd added: “We remain committed to our loyal installers and to future-proofing their businesses as we adapt and diversify our own. We will be investing in our training offering to give installers the skills they need to work with the latest heating technologies, while educating end-users about the benefits to help drive demand.”

LOCAL MAYOR APPLAUDS HEATING FIRM Sutton Mayor Cllr Trish Fivey has visited Carshalton Boilers in recognition of the company’s dedication to responding to the town’s heating and plumbing emergencies during the Covid-19 lockdown period. The Mayor spent half an hour chatting to the team and John Temple and his wife Carly, who run the family business. Mayor Fivey said: “We saw first-hand how professional and effective your response has been during the lockdown. It was clear that everything you do is geared to keeping your colleagues and general public safe during the lockdown. We want to acknowledge the invaluable work that you and your staff have done during this pandemic.” The company was forced to furlough the majority of its staff, but kept a handful of engineers carrying on throughout lockdown ensuring that those with critical heating and plumbing issues and the most vulnerable were prioritised and swiftly attended to.

GROHE REVEALS BRITISH SHOWERING BEHAVIOURS Grohe’s latest study indicates one in three consumers want to replace their old shower with a modern shower system and that most consumers depend on the knowledge of industry professionals to provide guidance when purchasing a new shower. Showering is now preferred over bathing by 64% of UK participants surveyed in a recent study by global market research institute, Explorare, commissioned by GROHE. The survey indicates that as many as 43% are now viewing the bathroom as an indulgent space for wellness and relaxation with 48% using the shower to help them relax. Meanwhile, around half (51%) of Britons are actively trying to save water with 54% seeking additional sustainable functions from their shower to help them live more eco-consciously in their day-to-day lives.

NEWS IN BRIEF... The Government must use the next Budget to bring forward greater investment in the construction sector to help boost jobs and activity, says the FEDERATION OF MASTER BUILDERS (FMB). Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “The Government must use the forthcoming Budget to invest in our housing stock, both new builds and improving our existing buildings. This will support recovery in the construction industry and create jobs.”

HETAS has welcomed the government’s publication of draft regulations for the Air Quality Domestic Solid Fuels Standards in England. The draft legislation plans to phase out the supply of house coal and smaller volumes of wet wood, in measures designed to reduce the environmental impact of domestic burning associated with the use of wood burning stoves and coal fires. Bruce Allen, Chief Executive of HETAS, said: “This legislation marks a really significant step in supporting cleaner and safer choices for the use of biomass and other solid fuels.” The Technical Departments at GRANT UK have increased the hours of support that they are on hand to help customers. Both the Technical and Customer Services Teams are now available to answer calls and provide support via email from 7.30am through to 6pm Monday to Thursday and 5pm on Fridays. In addition, the Technical Team are now also available between 8.30am through to 1pm on Saturdays. One in four people would be more likely to refurbish their bathroom if a VAT reduction was introduced, according to a recent Opinium poll commissioned by the BATHROOM MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION (BMA). Presented with the prospect of a 15% VAT cut on bathroom products, 23% of UK adults said they’d be more inclined to undertake an improvement project. Tom Reynolds, Chief Executive of the BMA said: “This research shows that reducing VAT to 5% on home improvement should be in the Chancellor’s toolbox.”

CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS ON THE RISE The total value of construction contract awards in July 2020 was £6.3 billion which compares to £3.1 billion in June and £1.6 billion in May, according to the latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI. The number of awards has also increased in July to 860 which is an increase of 80.3% on June. The residential and infrastructure sectors accounted for over 50% share of total contract awards. Commenting on the figures, Tom Hall, Chief Economist at Barbour ABI and AMA Research said, “While the economy entered a recession, the construction industry has seen significant increases in activity over the last two months. This could potentially be due to the restarting of activity that had stalled in previous months. A strong planning pipeline could suggest the industry will continue to strengthen but at what rate remains to be seen.”

COVID-19 SECURE MEASURES ARE ‘CRITICAL’ The Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) is reminding those businesses not trading and positioning themselves as being ‘COVID-19 Secure’ that such measures are ‘critical for business success’. APHC recently worked with research company Eureka! in assisting them to conduct an industry survey which involved interviewing 2,000 plumbing and heating businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Commenting on the research findings, John Thompson, Chief Executive Officer at APHC said: “The research indicates that although there are more plumbing and heating companies now back working, COVID-19 is still proving stubborn, with the sector only operating at an average of 42% of its normal level with 7 in 10 businesses highlighting a lack of demand for their services as being the largest obstacle to returning to normality. “It is clear that demand for new installations and ‘larger’ projects is going to continue to be lower than before the pandemic due to sustained uncertainty. With fewer projects available to quote on, the market is becoming more competitive and consumers are being more selective and cautious when appointing trades people to work in their homes. This means businesses, now more than ever, need to be able to reassure customers that they are reputable and safe. So having COVID-19 Secure health and safety measures are vital in winning new business and for the survival of plumbing and heating businesses. However, alarmingly, Eureka!’s research found that only 31% of respondents have created an explicit ‘COVID-19 secure’ policy.” John Thompson highlighted that the Health & Safety Executive offers a free COVID-19 Secure Certificate which can be printed off from their website and also he also advised businesses to consider informing customers about their health and safety measures through a variety of ways which include: creating a COVID-Secure webpage on your website and referencing your COVID-Secure status clearly on your website’s homepage, communicating your COVID-Secure processes on social media, and by producing a simple flyer which can be given to prospects and customers.

GREEN HOMES GRANT: A MIXED REACTION During July’s mini-budget, the Chancellor pledged £2bn for a ‘Green Homes Grant’ scheme designed to improve the energy efficiency of up to 600,000 domestic properties. Originally welcomed by many in the sector, since further details were supplied in early August industry reactions have become more mixed. £1.5bn will be available via the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme, aimed at private housing. Households will be able to install primary measures, which include insulation, heat pumps and solar thermal. In conjunction with the provision of a primary measure, secondary measures will also be eligible which include heating controls and hot water cylinder insulation. Significantly, fossil fuel-based heating systems will not be eligible. To comply the work must be carried out by a Trustmark registered tradesperson, or in the case of heat pumps and solar thermal a Micro Generation Certification Scheme (MCS) registered installer. The scheme is due to go live at the end of September.

The Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) believes that the Green Homes Grant Scheme offers limited opportunity for heating installers. John Thompson, CEO at the APHC said: “I am disappointed that yet again the government has failed to listen to our industry and have created another ill-fated scheme. Firstly, the government appears to have made a huge oversight in not including high efficiency condensing boilers in the overall scheme as there was much here to assist with stimulating growth and more sustainable employment. “Ultimately, the Green Homes Grant Scheme offers very little for the average plumbing and heating installer and I fear it will be another Green Deal type failure. It will do very little to secure the employment growth in relation to the plumbing and heating industry that is so needed following the pandemic.” Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch commented: “Although we support any scheme that actively tries to improve the efficiency of UK homes, the fact that upgrading boilers is not included in this grant is an oversight. There are still anything up to six million non-condensing boilers in operation so upgrading to a high efficiency condensing boiler would have made a significant improvement to these homes.”

SPECIAL REPORT | Water Quality

TALKING WATER TESTING

The quality of the water running through the system is a vital component of any domestic heating installation.

A

lthough BS 7593:2019 stipulates that annual tests should be undertaken to check the concentration of additives and cleanliness of system water throughout a heating system’s life, customer concerns about costs and limitations of the most used water testing methods can make it difficult to deliver this service and uphold the standard. Here, Tom Hood, ADEY’s Sales Director in the UK and Ireland, discusses some of these issues and shares some advice to overcome them.

Q

It’s not always easy to bring up the subject of water testing and treatment with customers. Where can installers begin? In the current climate, consumers are naturally being more careful about expenditure, so it can be tough to start the conversation about the importance of keeping their system’s water healthy, even if it will prolong the life of their heating system and save them money in the long run. If the health of system water hasn’t been properly maintained in the past, the chances are, the signs are already there – cold spots in radiators, banging noises from the boiler, lukewarm water from taps, leaks, loss in boiler pressure, or boilers

simply turning themselves off. To prove to customers that poor water health is likely to be the cause of these problems, carrying out a test would enable them to see exactly what’s wrong with the water.

Q

But customers are quite often reluctant to have a water test done because they’re worried about the cost, especially if installers need to send a sample off to a lab. This is certainly the optimum way to carry out a water test, but it does come at a cost – between £35-£40 per test. Because it takes 24 hours to receive the lab results, installers also have to leave the property and return if any element of the test requires corrective action. So, not only does the lab test incur a charge, but returning to a customer to carry out remedial treatment further adds to the cost.

Q

Would a dip test be cheaper?

Dip tests do give instant results. But this technique only measures the level of a single brand inhibitor in the system and the findings are limited. What’s more, these are open to interpretation regarding actions required, and homeowners have no way of verifying that an installer’s understanding of the results is correct.

12 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Q

Are there any alternative options?

Q

What does the process involve?

Yes, there is now a smarter, simpler, and more cost-effective solution for water testing at a customer’s property. ADEY has launched the UK’s first universal digital water test – ProCheck. By using it heating engineers can carry out a simple onsite analysis of water health in a system and sort out any problems flagged up by the results at the same visit. This is all done via a test kit and a dedicated app on a smartphone.

First, the heating engineer takes a sample from the system water and carries out a dip test using the ProCheck strips supplied with the kit. This strip is positioned on a test card before being scanned to the app using the smartphone camera – the scan is then analysed and verified.

012_PHPI_OCT20_Layout 1 28/08/2020 10:43 Page 13

Much like a laboratory test, ADEY ProCheck, which has been tested and approved by KIWA Gastec, looks specifically at the three main areas of concern: protective inhibitor levels, the level of corrosion through iron measurement and the dangers posed by the pH level present. A report is immediately created and any problems with dirty system water can be identified and dealt with there and then without the need for a second visit. The engineer can use the report to explain to the customer about the possible consequences if the quality issues are left untreated. Results can also be emailed directly from the app to the customer or viewed later via a report management system.

Q

How can installers encourage customers to have their system water tested annually in the future, which would help generate repeat business? Once homeowners can see and understand how dirty water can damage one of the most expensive assets in their

heating engineers can carry out a simple onsite analysis of water health in a system and sort out any problems flagged up by the results at the same visit. homes, they are much more likely to be interested in continuing with preventative water treatment and monitoring services. But to increase the chances of repeat business, it is important to build trust with them and give them peace of mind. There are a few easy ways to do this. For example, having third-party validation of the test results and making your recommendations visible will both contribute towards a customer’s trust in the test and suggested actions. Keeping track of tests completed and having digital copies of the results which can be easily resent to customers can give

them confidence that their heating system has been left in optimum system health by the engineer before leaving the job. What’s more, valuable insights from previous tests can also be used to inform work required at their property during future visits. ADEY’s ProCheck makes all this possible whilst streamlining the end-to-end process, so installers don’t have to worry about the cost or time involved. Thanks to this new water testing method and remote technology, difficult conversations with customers about these services can now be consigned to the past, helping installers to uphold industry standards and generate more business revenue at the same time. ith over 25 years combined experience, brothers Michael and David Webster own Webster Design and Build covering all aspects of building work from design to completion. Taking on the plumbing and installer jobs within the company, Michael has certainly seen a change to the industry since March. After a short period of furlough for himself and his staff, Michael returned to work. Merchants reduced the number of customers in the store at any one time, causing queues and so delays in the working day. For this reason, Michael explained that, “a new level of organisation has been necessary” to ensure that all parts and equipment needed for a job could be sourced in time – and to catch up on the work that was unable to be completed during the lockdown.

Now, as the lockdown restrictions have eased, Michael and his team are back to work, but not necessarily back to normal. cuppa. But this isn’t the only change to working life that he has noticed. With many people still furloughed and working from home finding space to park a work van has become increasingly difficult, which of course makes travelling to and from the van during the workday a tedious task. Similarly, neighbours who would usually have been at the office during the time when Michael and his team are working, are now home and, unfortunately, being disrupted. Whilst he cites no formal complaints, Michael noted the agitation from disgruntled neighbours is certainly a new and unwelcome challenge brought about by the ‘new normal.’

Bathroom renovation But with all the difficulties comes hope, says Michael, as he explains: “Where a lot of people have had their holidays cancelled, they now have money to spare, which they are using to do up their houses. And if you’re looking to completely redesign a room in your house, the bathroom is probably the cheapest, rather than a kitchen renovation or extension, for example.” Which is good news for plumbers and installers who are re-emerging from the lockdown lifestyle. In fact, the last few months have seen somewhat of a bounce back for Michael and his team. He explained that the company was now in the midst of a busier summer and autumn than they had initially planned before Covid-19. The ‘new normal’ is bound to come with an array of challenges to tradespeople from every sector, but as Michael and his team have proven it is possible to bounce back and continue on strong, despite the difficulties.

LIQUID FUEL OPTIONS

Fossil fuels must quite rightly be phased out, but this doesn’t have to spell the end for oil boilers says OFTEC Chief Executive, Paul Rose.

T

he current options supported by government to help oil heated households transition to low carbon heat are heat pumps and in limited cases, biomass boilers. Heat pumps can work well in properties with good thermal efficiency – but this currently rules out the 97% of oil heated homes which are rated EPC band D – G without costly energy efficiency improvements. Particulate emissions from biomass are also problematic, while both technologies are expensive and disruptive to install. A recent report from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) ‘Net Zero: the road to low carbon heat’, rightly recognises that one of the biggest barriers to net zero heat is likely to be achieving behavioural change among households. Common sense would therefore suggest that lower cost solutions which require minimal change for homeowners will prove more popular. This will be especially true for rural households that are more likely to experience deeper fuel poverty, have lower disposable incomes and little or no savings to draw on. We must also factor in the many people across the country who have been financially impacted by the Covid crisis.

Government support Government support to help consumers improve the energy efficiency of their homes and install some low carbon heating technologies is now available through the Green Homes Grant scheme. Clean Heat

Grants providing £4,000 towards the cost of new heating systems have also been proposed from 2022. But even with this support, many households still won’t be able to fund the required changes that could cost upwards of £10,000 – and probably far more for oil heated homeowners. So, what if there were a better solution? What if industry could continue manufacturing, installing and servicing high efficiency oil boilers which could instead run on a renewable, sustainable liquid fuel? With the right policy support, this scenario is entirely possible and industry could deliver a 100% fossil free fuel that overcomes many of the current barriers to heat decarbonisation, well within the government’s net zero timeframes

Renewable liquid fuels Ongoing trials across Europe testing various renewable liquid fuel options show that Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) – a sustainable, fossil free fuel derived from waste – can provide a drop-in replacement for kerosene for oil heated homes.

For UK decarbonisation targets to be met, a mix of low carbon heat solutions must be provided that includes renewable liquid fuels.

HVO is already available across the UK and with government assurance, industry will have the confidence to invest and expand production further. The supply of waste materials used to manufacture renewable liquid fuels is also increasing alongside demand. Biodiesel is currently used in large quantities for road transport and, as electric vehicles become more common, surplus raw material can be diverted to produce renewable heating oil. New manufacturing innovations are also likely to revolutionise the industry, further increasing supply.

Making it happen For UK decarbonisation targets to be met, a mix of low carbon heat solutions must be provided that includes renewable liquid fuels. Broadening the choices available to homeowners is the only way to create a competitive market that will drive down costs – which is essential for consumer take up. It is also the only way to ensure a fair transition to low carbon heat which is affordable for all. This could be achieved by creating a low carbon heating obligation which opens the market to all solutions that can achieve the emission reduction levels set. Renewable liquid fuels provide a future for the oil heating industry, continued work for the 9,000 registered heating technicians and a realistic, workable solution for consumers. Introducing

THE GREENSTAR 2000

–The relaunched combi boiler from Worcester Bosch, at an affordable price Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch outlines the key features of the leading boiler manufacturer’s new product range – the Greenstar 2000 – and the road it took to get there.

W

e are excited to have launched the Greenstar 2000 boiler, replacing the Worcester 2000 launched last year. Suitable for apartments, plus small and medium sized homes with one bathroom, the Greenstar 2000 takes all the best bits of the Worcester 2000 while including more technical upgrades – we’ve even reduced the price! It is our policy to listen to installers to ensure we are developing the best products and services for the market. Last year, a clear message had been the increasing need for a price competitive Worcester Bosch boiler, which gives installers more flexibility when it comes to offering the right solution for their customer. Taking this feedback on board we developed the Worcester 2000, a natural gas-fired combi boiler, specifically designed to be accessible for all. The cost-conscious alternative intended to allow installers the option to offer customers a reliable Worcester Bosch boiler at a competitive price-point. The product was well-received by installers and homeowners alike, however we didn’t want to stop there. We asked installers for their honest opinions and looked at how we could develop the product even further. It was great to hear that installers felt it was a high-quality boiler at a great affordable price. So, we took all of this feedback on board and ensured we kept the things installers loved – and made enhancements where required.

Introducing the Greenstar 2000 The main improvements included full 230v controls compatibility as well as an easier PRV push-fit connection. We’ve also included copper tails, for CH flow and return, to ensure a quicker installation. The mains cable is also now replaceable.

S2 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

We also embraced many of the much-loved features and installer benefits from the previous Worcester 2000, including: ● Ability to condense in hot water mode ● Quick to install with the option to pipe

vertically to the boiler ● Easy access with removable side panels ● Simple to specify with maximum flue

lengths of 9m horizontally and 12m vertically (60/100) ● C6 heat exchanger – an evolution of the WB3 heat exchanged which features in our most popular combi boiler, the Greenstar i ● The ability to modulate down to as little as 4.8kW ● 35-degree hot water temperature rise (10 & 12l/min) We are confident that with these new improvements, the Greenstar 2000 will be as well-received as its predecessor and continue our intention as a company to give more flexibility to installers. We strive to offer every home greater choice and the opportunity to have a high-quality heating system, along with all the aftercare support that is synonymous with the Worcester Bosch brand.

TAKE CONTROL Developed in response to both consumer and installer feedback, Vaillant’s senso range of controls offer increased connectivity, a smart modern design and are easy to use and install, as Steve Keeton, Training and Technologies Director at Vaillant explains.

T

he sensoHOME and sensoCOMFORT are the latest range of controls from Vaillant and have been designed to make installers’ lives easier through guided commissioning, using the in-built eBUS connection. eBUS is the language used by Vaillant products so they can ‘talk’ to each other. It is this intelligent communication that allows Vaillant boilers to carry out more complex decisions rather than just turning on and off. For example, eBUS allows the sensoHOME to constantly monitor room temperature. As the target temperature in the room approaches, it tells the boiler to modulate to a lower system temperature so that the target room temperature is not exceeded. Using this process – known as load compensation – the boiler is more frequently kept at lower temperature and in full condensing mode, therefore enabling the boiler to run at its most efficient point. Controlling the system in this precise way

also allows homeowners to lower their energy consumption, carbon footprint and energy bills. The sensoCOMFORT model features load compensation and weather compensation as standard. When installed with an outdoor weather sensor, it can also implement these technologies to deliver energy, carbon and cost savings for the user. If a customer wishes to have total control of the heating system at home and on the go via Vaillant’s sensoAPP, and want increased visibility of energy usage to help reduce energy wastage using sensoHOME, both can be achieved by pairing the control with the sensoNET (VR 921) internet gateway. The sensoHOME is available as wired or wireless. The wired version can support two zones with the VR 66/2 wiring centre and additional VR 92 remote control. The sensoHOME RF only supports one zone.

Step-by-step

Vaillant’s step-by-step guide outlines how to install a sensoHOME VRT 380F – a wireless model – and link it to any Vaillant boiler using the eBUS connection, for a property with one heating zone.

1 I Remove the cable attached to the receiver. You won’t need this as it’s for Vaillant boilers coming onto the market in the future. You’ll then need to get a level wire, at 0.75mm, and crimp it at both ends.

2 I Open the panel at the bottom of the Vaillant boiler. Put two ends into the BUS connection in the boiler, and the other two ends into the BUS connection in the receiver. Clip the cover back onto the receiver and close the panel of the boiler.

3 I With the supplied screws and wall plugs, identify a location for the receiver to be placed. Once the screws are in place (60mm apart) then the receiver can be mounted.

4 I The receiver is now set up. Turn it on, and then turn on the boiler. The control interface will now light up.

5 I Using Vaillant’s eBUS communication protocol, the sensoHOME automatically scans and looks for other Vaillant components that use this language. This

means it will automatically communicate and synchronise with the Vaillant boiler. All you’ll need to do now is to follow the simple on-screen instructions to set up the date, time and language. The control also comes with a hanging bracket and screws so that it can be wall-mounted.

6 I Now that you’ve set-up the new sensoHOME control, it’s time for your customers to learn how to use it using the on-screen wizard with step-by-step instructions. The on-screen prompts will also take them through setting up a heating schedule by asking a few simple questions, such as what time they’d like to heating to turn on / off and whether they are at home in the daytime on weekdays or weekends. 7 I The sensoHOME controls also allows the installer to input their contact information so if there was a fault or a service required on the heating system, a notification will be shown and details of the installer will be available to get any issues resolved. You can input the service date and your contact information by going into the menu followed by ‘settings’ To find out more about Vaillant’s sensoHOME and sensoCOMFORT thermostats and register for a free training course on these controls

Installer’s view

John Wood, from John Wood Heating & Plumbing in Scarborough, has been installing a number of the sensoHOME VRT 380F controls. “The receiver is really easy to wire up, and setting up the control is straightforward. It uses the eBUS communication protocol to scan the entire system for other Vaillant components, so it automatically links up with the Vaillant boiler. “It takes you through step-by-step and tells you what to do, which is great for both installers and the homeowner. I really like the feature where you hand it over to customer and it goes through how to use the controls. It saves the installer having to explain, and the touchscreen makes it very simple to follow the prompts. “It’s sleek, stylish, and feels like a premium product. It comes with a 10 year guarantee when fitted with a Vaillant boiler, which is a lot longer than other cheaper controls. That gives customers a solid reassurance that they have a high-quality control. And because it operates on the eBUS protocol, it links seamlessly with the Vaillant boiler. “All in all, its ease of use makes it one of the best controls out here in the market at the moment.”

MAKE PUMP OVERRUN A THING OF THE PAST

Most modern heat only boilers need to use pump overrun to dissipate residual heat and reduce the risk of water boiling in the heat exchanger when it is switched off. Andy Speake, Product Manager at Baxi, explains more about pump overrun and how Baxi heat only boilers have been designed without the need for pump overrun or permanent live wiring.

O

lder boilers were made of very different materials to the high efficiency models we manufacture today. When they turned off, any residual heat left in the heat exchanger could safely disperse through the casing and flue. Today’s boilers are much more energy efficient, but because they are lighter, they are less able to disperse any residual heat. This means that when they turn off there is a danger that residual heat will cause the water in the heat exchanger to boil, causing extensive and costly damage to the heat exchanger. Most manufacturers overcome this risk by using a pump overrun. The boiler is designed so that the pump continues to run for a short period after the boiler has switched off, circulating the water so the heat is dissipated through the heating system and won’t boil in the heat exchanger. As the pump is usually installed in the airing cupboard next to the hot water storage cylinder, the installer needs to run a wire from the pump to the boiler, which is often situated in another part of the house. Wireless options are available, but they are costly and may not always be suitable.

Aluminium heat exchanger Baxi uses aluminium heat exchangers for its heat only boilers. Aluminium is a great conductor of heat, and holds less residual heat. The heat exchangers for Baxi heat only boilers have been carefully designed to

026_PHPI_OCT20_Layout 1 28/08/2020 11:55 Page S9

be thinner and slimmer, so they react more rapidly when the boiler is turned off, meaning the risk of boiling water is eliminated, as is the need for a pump overrun. That means the installer does not need to run wires from the boiler to the pump, which often involves lifting carpet and floorboards, and then making good. This is good news for everyone as it is time consuming for the installer and inconvenient for the homeowner.

Less disruption The Baxi 800 Heat is the newest heat only boiler to be added to the company’s range. Like all its heat only models, there is no requirement for a pump overrun that needs power when the boiler switches off or a screen or power light that needs to be on when the external controls have switched the boiler off. This saves the installer the

the Baxi 800 Heat is suited for homes with several bathrooms or a high requirement for hot water. problem of getting a permanent power supply to the boiler and means less disruption overall when completing the job. With outputs of 16, 25 and 30kW, and weighing 17.5 kg, the 800 Heat completes Baxi’s line-up of easy-to-install and efficient heat only, system and combi boilers. Fully compatible with market-leading Megaflo cylinders, the Baxi 800 Heat is suited for homes with several bathrooms or a high requirement for hot water.

APPY COMMISSIONING

An app to help with commissioning boilers makes this important task easier to perfect, as Andrew Lambert, Area Service Manager for Viessmann, explains.

L

et’s be honest about this: not all boilers are commissioned with the same degree of thoroughness. Commissioning steps recommended by manufacturers sometimes get accidentally forgotten or ignored, even though this can detrimentally affect the boiler’s performance and efficiency for years afterwards. But now there’s an app that helps ensure commissioning is always done perfectly and safely. What’s more, the app has an automated function that increases the chances of the commissioning engineer being offered subsequent servicing work. This handy tool is Viessmann’s ViStart app. Useable on smartphones and tablets, it’s currently compatible with all wifi-enabled (E3) Viessmann boilers with output up to 35kW in the Vitodens 200-W range. The app automatically establishes a connection with the boiler as soon as its integrated WiFi access point has been

activated, then it communicates directly with the boiler control via its WLAN interface. This eliminates the need to access the customer’s home internet. The app’s purpose is not to speed-up commissioning (though it does remove the need for installers new to the Vitodens to consult every page of a commissioning book, and the need to call technical support) but to ensure that no important step is missed, so that every boiler is commissioned to a consistently high standard. The app makes this easy by providing an intuitive step-by-step guide, with helpful prompts along the way. It covers time programmes, heating circuits, heating curves, DHW, the circulation pump and generates a final completion report. Even installers familiar with the Vitodens range will find the app helps them fine-tune each boiler for the scenario in which it’s fitted.

Even installers familiar with the Vitodens range will find the app helps them fine-tune each boiler. S10 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Another especially helpful part of the ViStart app is the early step covering filling and venting, which makes sure the system is kitted-off properly and starts properly. After asking for the boiler to be filled-up, the app gives a read-out of the system’s water pressure, and if this is acceptable, the app’s venting mode shifts the diverter valve backwards and forwards, periodically turning the pump on and off, to remove air from the system. Whenever I have to replace a component, I always use this filling and venting function because it’s the best way of knowing, before switching

028_PHPI_OCT20_Layout 1 28/08/2020 14:18 Page S11

anything on, that the water is at the required pressure and the air is out.

Weather compensation We all know that weather compensation is becoming more popular as installers and customers are looking for efficiency from their new heating system. The ViStart app allows you to set this up, fine-tuning with an interactive graph demonstrating to both installer and end-user exactly how the Vitodens boiler will modulate as the outdoor temperature changes. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen a boiler installed without these parameters being changed. This is possibly because heat curve, slope and shift are deep in the boiler settings. Now, the app leads the installer through before moving on to the next step.

Customer relationship The ViStart app also helps the installer-customer relationship. Even if the

boiler is inaccessibly located, in a loft for example, the installer can show the customer the settings on a smartphone or iPad. Many end-users appreciate this because they want to be able to hold connectivity and information in their hand. And because the app asks the engineer to fill-in some contractor details, if a fault code should later present itself on the boiler, the end-user will be shown the installer’s phone number, increasing the installer’s

chances of being asked to handle servicing and maintenance work. The ViStart app is downloadable from the Apple app store and Google Play store free of charge. Even though I have years of commissioning experience and know Vitodens boilers well, I honestly wouldn’t be without it. To find out more www.rdr.link/pt014

A HELPING

HAND

PHPI takes a look at two solutions designed to help heating engineers ensure boiler installations are top notch.

Condensate Pro Cold winters can freeze condensate pipes and cause boilers to stop working – and many people will recall ‘the Beast from the East’ winter weather of a couple of years ago. One solution designed to prevent this is Condensate Pro, which has been developed by plumbing and heating engineer Dave Smith. Dave explains: “There are millions of boilers fitted with substandard external condensate pipe protection with pipes that freeze easily and cause boiler breakdown. Frozen condensate pipes account for a

Condensate Pro protects the installer, their customers and the boilers which breakdown due to condensate pipes freezing. substantial amount of boiler breakdowns in colder months. During these times, the number of heating engineer call-outs spike as people struggle to get access to heating and hot water in their home – but this can be reduced simply and quickly.” The Condensate Pro solution features specially designed UV/water resistant lagging and bond and seal adhesive. All products fit on to 32mm or 21.5mm overflow pipes. The products offer a solution for every external termination – gully waste, soakaways, rainwater and soil pipes – making it easy to price the cost of installation.

WIN! a TF1 Sigma Filter Installer’s Pa ck

Leading water treatment manufacturer Fernox is giving one reader the chance to win its TF1 Sigma Filter Installer’s Pack, which includes everything you need to successfully clean and protect a domestic heating system.

WIN A PRIZE THAT PACKS A PUNCH

T

he use of high-quality chemical water treatment and in-line system filters is widely accepted as industry best practice – the guidance stated in BS 7593:2019 and the Benchmark Commissioning Checklist simply reinforces this approach. Fernox understands that installers need easy-to-use, hassle-free products that can ensure the latest standards are observed. The Fernox FT1 Sigma Filter Installer’s Pack is one such product. Included in this handy 3-in-1 pack is the leading TF1 Sigma Filter and the powerful Cleaner F3 and Protector F1 500ml chemicals – everything needed to restore and maintain system efficiency.

TF1 Sigma Filter The TF1 Sigma Filter was the first sealed, composite plastic filter launched to the market. Developed as a sealed unit with no removable lid, this filter offers improved reliability and eliminates the risk of leaks. Its design makes the cleaning process during the annual system service easy, quick and mess-free, as well as saving time for the installer on site. As there is no removable lid, there is no need to replace ‘O’ rings; therefore reducing ongoing maintenance costs associated with traditional lidded, plastic filters, which

require component parts to be replaced each time the lid is opened for servicing. To ease installation, the TF1 Sigma Filter can be installed horizontally, vertically or in any orientation in both flow directions. It can also be positioned at any angle up to 45°, making it ideal for use in restricted spaces. To aid installation further, the filter is available in both 22mm and 28mm versions and with either high-quality valves or slip-socket connections, depending on installer preference. The filter uses Hydronic Particle Separation (HPS) technology and magnetic filtration to remove both magnetic and non-magnetic system debris fast and efficiently.

Protector F1

Also included in the pack is Protector F1. This chemical product combines three different types of active inhibitors to form a protective barrier between the system metals and water – thereby preventing electrolytic corrosion from taking place and stopping the build-up of sludge and limescale long-term. Formulated to include a high concentration of the main active ingredients, both Cleaner F3 and Protector F1 can treat up to a 130-litre system, which equates to 16 radiators or a 250m2 underfloor system. This reduces the risk of installers inadvertently under-dosing a system, as over 97% of UK homes can now be successfully treated with just one dose.

Cleaner F3 Fernox Cleaner F3 is a high performance, universal non-foaming chemical cleaner that starts to work after only one hour. It can also be left circulating in the system for up to seven days prior to flushing, which is especially useful for cleaning existing systems. Effective against dirt and sludge, this universal cleaner removes debris that would otherwise block pipes or become trapped within the boiler, damaging vital components.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

TACKLING

TOOL THEFT

Michael Brown, Product Design Director at Metal and Modular, a specialist in safety, security and materials handling equipment for sites, discusses tool theft and how to tackle it.

A

ccording to research based on figures from police forces across the UK, tool theft from site could cost contractors almost £95 million each year. It’s a problem that’s getting worse as opportunist thieves take their chances with site security to lift equipment that is portable, saleable and, most of all, valuable. The value of any piece of equipment is not just in the money required to replace it. The real value – and cost – is the loss of a tool that is fundamental to the operative’s job and, therefore, not only needs to be replaced but needs to be replaced quickly. It’s often the knock-on consequences of tool theft that are the most damaging. The

more high value and specialist the equipment, the harder it is to replace, leading to wasted time and potential delays to installation programmes. Potentially tool theft can even result in workers not being paid because they have been unable to work, financial penalties due to site delays, or even contra-charges if an alternative sub-contractor has to be brought in.

Locking down risk Regardless of site security, lightweight, portable equipment remains an easy target for casual thieves, so it’s essential to protect these vulnerable items. Tool vaults are a robust and convenient solution but it’s important to look for the right model to suit the site and ensure the right level of flexibility. The first consideration is selecting the right size to meet the needs of the number of operatives on site and the amount and size of equipment they have. Even on larger sites, it may be more appropriate to use two or more smaller units than to locate everything centrally. Manoeuvrability is also key. Castoring wheels will enable movement in any direction and a footbrake should be included to ensure the unit is fixed in place and cannot roll.

It’s often the knock-on consequences of tool theft that are the most damaging. The unit should also have a robust locking system. For example, our medium and large Tool Vaults have key-operated fiver-lever deadlocks specified to the British Standard, while the small Tool Vault has two fixed padlocks. Tool vaults should also be designed to safeguard against forced entry, so it’s advisable to select a unit with anti-theft doors cannot be forced open with a crowbar. For sites where only a small amount of hand tools need to be stored securely but storage of small fittings and components is also needed, a secure fittings cabinet with anti-theft doors and a robust locking system can be a useful alternative to a tool vault. Fittings can be stored in storage bins on shelves, helping operatives find what they need quickly and easily and aiding stock checking. For more details www.rdr.link/pt033

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

ON HAND The right tools can make all the difference on even the trickiest job. Knipex UK Marketing Manager David Barnes looks at the latest trends in hand tools for installers.

I

t would be easy to think that hand tools have not changed all that much over the years. However, innovations and new features are designed and incorporated into hand tools on a regular basis to save time and effort for plumbing and heating installers. For instance, many manufacturers, such as Knipex, are moving towards more compact tools and multiple features all on one tool. Those trends are reflected in our new products. Take the Cobra XS, for example, the smallest water pump pliers in the world with full functional capability, measuring just 100mm long. The tool can adapt to eleven adjustment positions and grip nuts up to 24mm in width. They also look great and tools like these are becoming more sought after as professionals look for improved ease of use and functionality. In 2020, we have launched a selection of tools that have unique features designed to save time, effort and cost for professionals. The TubiX pipe cutter makes it easy to cut pipes up to 35mm in diameter

and with a wall thickness of 2mm accurately – with just one hand thanks to the QuickLock quick adjustment guide. It locks the tool onto the pipe, then accurately positions the cutting wheel for different pipe diameters. After you have cut the pipe, an integrated, retractable deburring tool can be used to smooth out the cut surface. The cutting wheel is made of quality ball-bearing steel and can be exchanged quickly with a spare wheel, which is also located in the feeding barrel.

Sensitive surfaces Hand tools are also being adapted for use on chrome and other sensitive surfaces too. For instance, the new 300mm Pliers Wrench can now grip width across flats up to a diameter of 68mm (2 1/2") thanks to

Hand tools are also being adapted for use on chrome and other sensitive surfaces. two additional adjustment positions. It rounds off the range of six pliers wrenches (125, 150, 180, 250, 300 and 400mm). For especially sensitive surfaces, Knipex now offers plastic jaw covers as accessories for the 180, 250, and 300mm variants. The protective jaws are easily attached by hand and snap into place to suit the geometry of the pliers' jaws so that they do not slip during work. The soft, smooth gripping surface ensures that holding, gripping and fixing designer fittings or extremely sensitive materials does not result in any damage.

Power up Hand tools are also extremely powerful, thanks to their design. For instance, the 160mm CoBolt S has a 25-fold amplification of manual force. It is now available with a recess on the cutting edge, so the popular compact bolt cutter can cut through round materials even more effectively. Bolts, rivets and nails with a diameter up to 4.4mm and particularly tough materials such as piano wire and spring steel with a

diameter up to 3.3mm can now be cut in a single movement thanks to the recess located close to the joint. The enhanced leverage effect close to the pivot point makes cutting larger cross-sections easier.

Added features Cable strippers are also being designed with more features, yet at the same time they are becoming more user friendly. The PreciStrip16, for instance, quickly and precisely strips fine, flexible and solid cables, holding all materials tightly and firmly in its semi-circular grooved holding clamps. The pliers have a wide capacity range (which is easily adjusted) from 0.08 to 16mm2. The cable cutter on top of the PreciStrip16 reliably cuts flexible cables up to 16mm and solid conductors up to 6mm. Parabolic stripping blades separate insulation from both extremely fine-stranded and solid round cables, then automatically strip the insulation off backwards.

The PreciStrip16 has an adjustable length stop so accuracy is guaranteed, even on repetitive jobs. When needed, the blade cassette can be easily replaced. The tool makes cable stripping easy as it has an ergonomic handle that is comfortable to use all day long. And it’s not easy to lose either! It comes with a description label that can be personalised, meaning no more mix-ups and no more lost tools.

Minimise wear We have also launched a chrome plated version of our bestselling Self-Adjusting Crimping Pliers. Chrome plated tools are popular because the chrome helps to minimise wear and corrosion. With a narrow handle width and improved ergonomics the pliers are ideal for crimping wire end sleeves. The pliers self-adjust to the size of wire end sleeves required and are suited for

repetitive, high crimping quality due to its integral lock with a self-releasing mechanism. The tools have been calibrated accurately in Knipex’s Wuppertal factory and optimum transmission of force is ensured thanks to toggle lever for fatigue-reduced operation. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

r e w o Pplay Nick Chan, Marketing Manager for HiKOKI Power Tools, explains how the latest professional power tool technology can help heating and plumbing engineers save time and money.

W

e get asked the same question a lot: why should a plumbing or heating engineer invest in a professional, high performance power tool when you can get what, at first, looks like the same tool for half the price? The answer is straightforward – not all power tools are the same and the best ones can even improve a tradesperson’s profitability.

Protect your investment

More expensive tools should come with a warranty. For example, most HiKOKI tools, for added peace of mind, are backed up with an automatic three-year warranty, and a five-year warranty is available on some tools, subject to the tool being registered online and subject to terms and conditions. With a warranty, your investment is protected and should the worst happen, it can be repaired and parts replaced.

It might be a larger initial outlay, but the fact is, choosing the high performance, professional power tool over the cheaper, less powerful tool, will undoubtedly save time and money. The power to get jobs done faster and more efficiently, means more profit and the opportunity to move onto the next job. Their reliability means less downtime or outlay on new tools or repairs and superior warranties mean more peace of mind and less outlay again for repairs or new tools.

Battery power It’s an obvious one, but having the battery power to get through really tough jobs efficiently is important. Tools with HiKOKI’s Multi Volt Li-Ion battery, for instance, provide users with awesome mains-like power, with all the freedom and convenience associated with cordless tools. Multi Volt technology makes it possible to use 36V battery packs with 18V machines. Intelligent connecting technology makes it possible for the battery pack to detect

investing in a solid, professional power tool will repay you and the choice you make over and over again. whether it is being used on an 18 Volt or a 36 Volt device, and automatically adjust the voltage. If we use the analogy of cars, both a 1L and 2L engine can do 70mph, but the 2L engine is using less of its capacity to get there, therefore increasing the fuel efficiency and engine life. Take, for example, the new C3606DA cordless circular saw. In comparison to current 18 Volt machines, the Multi Volt version is up to 30% faster. The 36 Volt tool requires half the amperage of an 18 Volt tool to achieve the same power. Due to the lower amperage and an integrated cooling system, the battery pack heats up much

038_PHPI_OCT20_Layout 1 28/08/2020 12:15 Page 39

more slowly. This has a positive effect on the battery’s capacity and working life: the battery pack can deliver its full power over a longer period of time. This high performance Multi Volt tool will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Tools like the HiKOKI DH36DPA SDS-Plus Hammer Drill also benefits from the battery and brushless motor technology, and for installers looking to demolish, renovate and make room for pipework, you will benefit from mains like power, without the need for a generator or access to a power supply.

mean that the brushes will need to be replaced as they wear out over time with use, putting the tool out of action for a while at least. And due to the more compact design compared to brushed motors, incorporating the brushless motor permits a reduction in size and weight of tools for easier handling so you can keep going for longer.

Efficiency gains

Brushless motors Look out for brushless motor technology on cordless and mains powered tools. These tools improve efficiency, increase safety and provide a longer life. This in turn drives costs down for users. There’s nothing more frustrating than a power tool failing mid-job simply because it needs to be charged. With the huge improvement in efficiency this is no longer a pressing consideration. A brushless motor can increase working time by up to 40% when used on longer high-volume drilling jobs. Brushless motors work particularly well in big cordless grinders and hammer drills because these tend to be overworked by users. Brushless motors increase work time in other areas too. Cheaper tools may use brushed motors where the carbon brushes are in constant contact with the commutator during use. This friction will

40%

A brushless motor can increase working time by up to 40% when used on longer high-volume drilling job

The cross platform flexibility of the Multi Volt battery means you can use the same battery on a variety of tools, reducing the number of batteries needed (or needing to be checked that they are charged) and making for more efficient workflow. Multi Volt offers more power and durability than ever before, meaning their performance often matches that of their corded counterparts. These professional grade cordless tools have the added advantage that you can take a cordless tool anywhere, with no leads to trip on, and you don’t have to carry heavy transformers around either. This all makes for efficient working and time in the bank for more jobs to get done.

User safety There is another important advantage of high performance power tools – user safety. The best manufacturers build individual safety features into different types of tool, like our super safe nailers, drills, saws and breakers. Take HiKOKI’s Reactive Force Control (RFC) for instance, which stops the tool torqueing violently under load, protecting the user, while User Vibration Protection (UVP) dampening is built into the tool to reduce the level of vibration transferred to the user. More generally, tools with brushless motors increase operator safety and overload protection. They don’t generate the same heat as there are no carbon brushes and can’t be burnt out. They also offer better protection on kick-back control when operating. Some manufacturers such as HiKOKI also have power cut out technology, which keeps the operator safe too. Although it can be tempting to go cheap, investing in a solid, professional power tool will repay you and the choice you make over and over again. WANT TO KNOW MORE? HEAT IT UP The new cordless heat gun from Metabo rapidly generates heat for a wide variety of applications.

A

heat gun is a versatile machine that can be put to good use in a large number of situations. A cordless model will further enhance flexibility, allowing users to turn to this tool in almost any location. The new mobile heat gun from Metabo – which the company calls HG 18 LTX 500 – provides the energy needed to produce high levels of heat far away from a power outlet, utilising a powerful 18 Volt battery pack. From this power source the compact tool generates an operating temperature of up to 500 degrees Celsius. “It is one thing that the machine heats. It is important that the temperature is output in a fast manner”, says Metabo Product Manager Johannes Steeb. Metabo says its new heat gun does this in less than five seconds.

Heat button With an air flow of up to 200 litres per minute, the HG 18 LTX 500 is suited, for example, for shrinking cables, welding and remoulding plastic, as well as foiling or the removal of paint and adhesive residue. The tool is operated via one push button, designed to be easy and intuitive for all users. At a weight of 1.6 kilograms, including Metabo’s LiHD battery pack, it is similar to many cordless power tools. And being battery powered, even hard-to-reach spots far away from power outlets are no problem.

40 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Two settings, many nozzles The mobile heat gun offers two temperature settings: 300 and 500 degrees Celsius. For optimal power output, Metabo recommends using its 18 Volt battery pack with a capacity of 8.0 Ampere hours (Ah). This battery is part of the cross-manufacturer battery pack ‘Cordless Alliance System (CAS)’. Within CAS more than 160 machines and devices from 17 manufacturers are compatible with each other and can be combined at will. The heat gun can be used with a wide variety of nozzles including a wide jet nozzle for drying and paint removal, wrap around nozzle for crimping, or welding nozzle for welding of plastics. The HG 18 LTX 500 is compatible with all available Metabo accessory nozzles. If you then need a break after crimping or paint removal, says Product Manager Steeb with a twinkle in his eye: “The heat gun lights the barbecue in a jiffy.” For more details www.rdr.link/pt036

BUSINESS & TRAINING

A FLEXIBLE FUTURE Even before the pandemic, a more flexible approach to training was gaining in popularity, allowing installers to fit learning around their work and home life. Richard Firth, MD for Viva Training Academy, looks at the options.

A

t the time of writing, the UK has come out of lockdown and is navigating a path to live alongside COVID19. The economy has taken a serious knock, but hopefully with a more local approach to managing the spread of the virus, many of us are seeing an upturn in trade. During lockdown many training centres had to shut their doors. In doing so, however, it has made us look to new ways of working and there is much that can now be done online. We carried on conducting ACS re-assessments during lockdown, teaching lessons ‘live’ via Skype and employing social distancing in our centre for the paper assessment part. This approach should not be reserved for unprecedented global disasters, however – utilising the digital world can make training more flexible whatever the situation. In an ever changing marketplace, training is essential for any installer looking to develop and evolve their career.

pay for some or all of the course and if it’s beneficial to their business, they should give you time to train. Legally, employees of large companies are entitled to make one request a year to take time off for studying or training, as long as it can be argued the training will help improve their performance at work. There’s obviously small-print; the company isn’t expected to pay for the training and the time taken off is usually unpaid, but if you’ve been working for them for at least 26 weeks and the company employs over 250 people so they can reasonably cover your absence, you should be alright. Those working for smaller companies or sole traders aren’t so lucky. Your boss may grant you time off for studying – at their discretion. If your boss won’t budge, or the training you want to do is unrelated to your current role, upskilling will need to be fitted around your working week.

E-learning Ask your employer If your employed and want to upskill, don’t rule our discussing things with your employer. They may be thrilled that you’ve taken the initiative to enhance your skill set. If you’re lucky, they may even offer to

As mentioned, online courses are ideal for theory-based learning, such as brushing up on areas that might support your practical work – anything from current health and safety regulations to smarter ways to keep your accounts. The beauty of this type of training is that you can fit round your workload. E-learning is often modular, so you build up the course over a defined period of time. Apart from actual courses, there is also a wealth of webinars, online tutorials and pod casts available, that could help with things like running your business, marketing or introducing you to a new career. Enhancing your skills is not just about qualifications, acquiring new knowledge is always useful.

online courses are ideal for theory-based learning, such as brushing up on areas that might support your practical work Evening or weekend classes Another alternative is to look for evening or weekend classes. Training providers are increasingly aware of the need to offer working adults with more flexible options and it may be that these types of courses grow in popularity, as it could lead to more socially distant classrooms. More class slots to suit a wider range of people, could mean class numbers are kept down. For more information www.rdr.link/pt044

The first half of 2020 has been an extremely tough time for businesses across the board. Mark McShane, MD for Skills Training Group, looks at what has changed since lockdown and how plumbing and heating businesses can adapt to the ‘new normal’.

Digital connection If the lockdown has taught us anything, its that being online is more important than ever before. Business owners may think now is the time to cut costs and reduce marketing spend, when in fact, quite the opposite is true. A review of your digital marketing – your website, social media, e-marketing, paid ads, blog/vlog content – will set you apart from your competitors. With so many people hit financially by coronavirus and as we head into heating season, cost-cutting tips and advice for consumers should be well received on these platforms. With many companies scaling back, businesses willing to invest in their future – through digital marketing, training and/or diversification into related sectors – have an opportunity to stand out from the crowd. TRAIN TO GAIN – NO MATTER WHAT

Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), provides an update on training during the COVID-19 pandemic.

T

raining has undoubtedly had to adapt since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to meet the professional development needs of budding plumbing and heating engineers. For the CIPHE, this has meant further investment into its professional learning digital software.

Approved Training Centres The CIPHE currently works with over 50 colleges and training centres, which are known as our ‘Approved Training Centres’ (ATCs). These centres, and the students who attend, benefit from CIPHE approved training resources, career advice, engagement with leading plumbing and heating Industrial Associates (IAs), plus continuous help and advice in matters concerning education and training. Additionally, students at ATCs receive Trainee membership with the CIPHE free for the first year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ATCs have been supported more with digital learning software. Not only does this software help educators to teach students remotely, it also helps to save ATCs money at the same time. One example of this in practice is the CIPHE’s digital wiring and unvented hot water cylinder educational resources.

All installers can take advantage of the CIPHE’s range of TechTalk videos available on the CIPHE YouTube channel.

Other Resources

Unvented Hot Water Cylinders

All installers can take advantage of the CIPHE’s range of TechTalk videos available on the CIPHE YouTube channel. Further resources can then be found for CIPHE members only, where members can create their own tailored learning programmes to help them progress in their career and set attainable professional goals. It is important to stress that digital training resources should complement practical training and that on the tools experience is still an essential part of the learning process. Digital training however is an excellent way of helping to continue learning beyond the classroom, and during the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially useful. Make sure to take advantage of all the resources available to you and keep on learning no matter what.

The CIPHE has developed an unvented hot water cylinder digital training resource, which is designed to support the curriculum for level 2 and level 3 students. Accessible via a home PC, or at college, the course allows students to see all the

this has been very useful during the pandemic due to social distancing, it is also a great way to teach students in the classroom before they then test their skills and knowledge in the workshop. By utilising digital learning, ATCs save money as the physical controls in the workshop will not become worn out as quickly either, which inevitably happens with regular use and then needs replacing over time. Typically saving £300/year whilst keeping the quality of learning for all users.

Wiring programme The digital wiring programme has three elements: wiring and testing of a fully pumped S plan or Y plan and an underfloor heating system. It allows learners to work at their own pace and explore the controls in a guided and visual way from their home PC or college. While

cylinder parts and how they work within the system on their screen. This is an excellent introduction to cylinders and provides a more detailed overview of the components for students to study from their own homes. Not only a practical way of learning, this further saves ATCs money by helping to keep the actual college cylinders in assessment condition for longer. One huge advantage of the digital resources is that it keeps all learners engaged and involved at all times rather than a classroom being split between those who are doing practical work and those who are waiting for a turn.

Peter Booth takes a look at the Mainsboost Flomate from Stuart Turner – which has been designed to be connected directly to the incoming mains. For many organisations working with vulnerable women, it is often very difficult to find tradeswomen to carry out maintenance tasks. This often results in having to evacuate properties while the work is done by tradesmen. This displacement can add to stress and vulnerability felt by women and children. The National Register of Tradeswomen will serve many purposes: first to be able to have a ‘one stop shop’ for all trades, making it easy to find tradeswomen to carry out works in women’s homes and in refuges; and then to use profits to create a School for Tradeswomen and a Trust Fund.
