TECH TALK

Happy new year! I wrote this on a day that was still just about within the legal timeframe to say that, so that’s the first awkward bit over with for another year. The second awkward bit is that this column may contain spoilers – so if you haven’t yet watched Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which premiered on Christmas Day, you might want to pause reading until you have seen it.

So here we are kicking off 2025 with your January/February issue to keep you occupied for a little while at least as we navigate our way through the cold and seemingly never-ending weeks that always seem to arrive around this time of year. Some of you might be attempting to do this without cheese, chocolate or alcohol and if you are, well done, I salute you!

Many tradespeople might have returned to work with some brand new tools as they can make ideal stocking fillers - more so perhaps than a radiator or a heat pump would (unless they have a particularly large stocking). Personally I would have liked my very own Norbot, the robotic garden gnome from the aforementioned Wallace and Gromit film, preferably without the annoying song which is still stuck in my head today.

Before (spoiler alert) Feathers McGraw reappeared to deploy the robot for his own evil intentions, it looked like an incredibly useful invention. Taking care of household jobs inside and out, for a brief period, it became a bit of a neighbourhood money-spinner for our favourite plasticine characters. There were claims in some quarters that the storyline was an ‘attack’ on the dangers of modern technology. However, a far more measured view is perhaps that technology has done wonders for the world and continues to do so, but overreliance on it can create its own problems.

These themes have of course been covered previously in numerous films and TV series –although none quite as funny as Nick Park’s creation. Also, some jobs are actually still fun to do ourselves – who else felt a bit sorry for the neglected old teapot? And I might have got a bit too excited by the delivery of a new chainsaw late last year (bought for gardening purposes, I hasten to add!).

In the construction industry, we rely on the skills and knowledge of tradespeople to carry out work to the necessary level of competence and quality. In order for them to do this they require various types of tools and technology and wholesalers are responsible for showcasing many of these products, whether it’s the latest powertool or a brand new smoke detector.

So yes, I am quite confident that humans and technology can co-exist for a little while longer. And on that note, I’m off to find some cheese.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

KNOWLEDGE ON THE UP

SURVEY SUGGESTS UKTRADESPEOPLE NOW MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY

A new survey by Screwfix has found that UK tradespeople feel more confident in their energy efficiency knowledge than ever, helped by an eight per cent rise in training courses being completed in the last year.

The survey also revealed that two thirds (66 per cent) of all jobs conducted by the nation’s tradespeople over the past year have had an energy saving focus. Up from just over half (54 per cent) in 2023 as more homeowners are motivated to make the switch to energy saving products, to help them save money on energy bills.

With rising consumer demand for energy saving solutions, tradespeople are committing to further training so they can offer customers the best-informed advice and product choice. More than 600 tradespeople took part in the survey, with 25 per cent of those completing in-person training and a further 15 per cent completing training online that was focused on installing energy efficient products or renewable energy technology. As a result, 90 per cent of tradespeople say they now feel ‘very knowledgeable/somewhat knowledgeable’ when it comes to advising customers on energy efficiency –

compared to 84 per cent in 2023.

Earlier this year, Screwfix launched its Voice of the Trade report – which revealed that more than 75 per cent of tradespeople felt upskilling would have a positive impact on their business. However, almost 40 per cent were unable to upskill due to lack of time.

The survey also revealed that tradespeople are being asked to undertake a range of energy saving jobs. Lighting continues to top the list at 54 per cent, followed by the installation of new radiators (37 per cent).

After previous work on a different floor of 2 West Regent Street in Glasgow, Luceco partnered with local contractors, Electrical Solutions (Scotland) Ltd, to provide a lighting design that met the brief of the consultant’s lighting requirements.

The biggest challenge that had to be faced was the unconventional luminaire cut-out size, measured at 1200x300mm. Chris Bryant, Group Managing Director of Electrical Solutions (Scotland), explained: “We needed to provide a cost-effective lighting solution to fit into a non-standard suspended ceiling, that resulted in a comfortable, well-lit commercial working space while also

reducing future running costs.

“We had worked with Luceco on a previous floor in this building, so we knew that they would be able to help us find a solution.”

To fit the non-standard ceiling requirement, Grahame Scott, Luceco’s Project Manager, suggested using Luceco’s LuxPanel Extra lighting, a recessed panel fitting from the commercial range.

The LuxPanel Extra is a slimline backlit LED panel with TPa rated diffusers, long life drivers, and IP65 protected options. Backlit LED panels mount the modules to the back of the panel’s body, allowing for direct downward distribution from the modules themselves. Due to the direct

light, there is no requirement for an LGP. This allows a backlit panel to offer increased performance in terms of lumen per watt and balanced light distribution. Installation is achieved easily and efficiently with a plug and play ENEC approved loop in-out driver and rear safety wire suspension points.

Grahame Scott added: “We re-engineered our LuxPanel Extra luminaires to appropriately fit the Armstrong SAS330 ceiling they needed to fit in to. We then used our Platinum Downlighters around the perimeter of the space to compliment the lighting design and achieve the best look for the office space in West Regent Street.”

SCOLMORE EMPLOYEE TAKES ON CHARITY CLIMB

SCOLMORE GROUP’S AUDRA FELLOWS CONQUERSKILIMANJAROFOR EIC

Scolmore Group Regional Sales Manager, Audra Fellows, recently took on one of the biggest challenges of her life when she tackled, and successfully completed, the 5,895m climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, raising a staggering £8,619 for the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) in the process. Audra took part in the EIC charity event last month. It was organised by the charity’s Director of Marketing and Business Development, Kate Adamczyk. Audra and Kate were joined by 28 other team members from across various aspects of the electrical industry from

manufacturers, wholesalers and contractors.

Having previous tackled the Three Peaks Challenge, and having undertaken an incredible amount of training, Audra admitted that nothing can really prepare you for the physical and mental impact of the six day experience. She commented: “Yes, it was physically and mentally the biggest challenge I have ever undertaken, but what will stay with me forever is the incredible bond that we all made as a group. We each relied on one another’s strength, support and encouragement at various stages of the climb. It’s the people I climbed it with that have made it an

unforgettable experience.

“The typical success rate for the six day climb that we undertook is between 60-65% and yet every single one of our 29-strong team made it to the summit. Each one of us has seen firsthand what a difference the EIC has made to some of our close friends in the industry.”

CMP PRODUCTSGET ONITSBIKEFORANXIOUS MINDS

Staff at CMP Products recently got on their bikes and pedalled for passion for mental health charity, Anxious Minds –raising £4,359.81 during a non-stop 36-hour cycle challenge.

The static bike challenge took place in the main reception of the Cramlington-based businesses headquarters and saw approximately 100 members of staff take part in the challenge, with some employees choosing to do more than one time slot. Leanne Branfoot, CMP Products’ Human Resources Advisor and

Culture Champion, said: “We support a local charity every year and for 2024 / 25 there was an overwhelming desire to support a mental health charity that is really making a difference in the region.”

“The work Anxious Minds has done with individuals in the northeast over the last ten years has been truly astonishing and we hope the £25,000 we’re aiming to raise over the course of 12-months will provide much needed support to ensure they continue delivering support when and where it’s needed.”

PROJECT DELAYS PREDICTED

ELECTRICAL BUSINESSESBRACE FOR PROJECT DELAYS IN 2025

The latest quarterly Building Engineering Business Survey (BEBS) has revealed that close to two thirds (63%) of electrotechnical and engineering services businesses are worried about delays to projects and the impact this can have on cashflow.

The survey, conducted by ECA in partnership with BESA, SELECT, and SNIPEF and sponsored by Scolmore, also showed that almost a quarter (23%) of respondents expect their business’ performance to have worsened by the end of this year – a figure which has risen by 7% since the last survey, in August 2024.

Big Impact

ECA Director of Legal and business Rob Driscoll said: “Whilst staff shortages remain a concern, in 2025 we may see a big impact from delays to projects, which invariably leads to claims and disputes over the cost of completion and final payments.

“In a market where SMEs are paid in arrears as projects progress, business owners should focus on their resilience

and ability to withstand cashflow turbulence given the propensity of clients to store disputes up until the resolution of the final account.”

The survey suggests optimism about the number of direct employees in the sector, with 16% predicting this will go up in 2025. However, the same proportion of respondents felt the numbers of apprentices would fall in 2025, most likely reflecting the decline in confidence about future trading conditions following the budget announcements of increased costs for 2025.

ECA Chief Operating Officer Andrew Eldred said: “Businesses are facing conflicting pressures. On the one hand, business leaders are less confident about the future. On the other, long-standing concerns about workforce availability and capability remain.

“Effective dialogue and collaboration between industry, national and regional governments are more necessary than ever to sustain employer investment in skills development through uncertain

RECOLIGHTWELCOMESDEFRA ONLINEMARKETPLACE WEEE

The Government has announced that online marketplaces are to be brought within the scope of the WEEE Regulations. This means that online marketplaces will be responsible for the WEEE costs of any non-compliant product sold through the platform. Welcoming the news, Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey said: “It is great to see this change announced. For far too long many online marketplaces have been able to avoid WEEE costs. That in turn has meant that legitimate UK businesses pay more than their fair share. This change is a vital step to make sure that compliant UK businesses are not put at a

competitive disadvantage by non-compliant imports.”

He added: "Recolight has campaigned to close the online marketplace WEEE loophole for many years. We’ve undertaken research that has shown the huge proportion of non-compliant product sold via such platforms. For example, one analysis showed that 76% of LED lightbulbs sold by a leading online marketplace were not WEEE compliant. For the 220 producer members of the Recolight WEEE scheme, this change cannot come too soon.”

The Government has not announced a definitive timetable for the legislation.

times. Achievement of key policy missions such as clean energy, housing and good jobs will depend on it.”

The number of respondents reporting vacancies in their businesses rose by 10% to nearly two in five respondents (36%). Trouble filling these vacancies was primarily blamed on a lack of sufficient knowledge or skills (49%), high pay expectations (46%), and a lack of sufficient qualifications (40%).

Payment behaviour

While most survey respondents felt payment behaviour would not change by the end of Q4 2024, over 20% felt it would deteriorate. Half (49%) said that their public sector clients paid them later than 30 days after completing work, including 10% saying this took over 60 days.

Three quarters (76%) said that their private sector clients paid later than 30 days, including 16% saying this took longer than 60 days. Over 40% of respondents reported that between 2.5-10% of their turnover was currently tied up in retentions.

However, given that the WEEE system operates in calendar years, it would be logical for regulations to be made during 2025, coming into full force in 2026. Any transitional arrangements allowed for in the Regulations should prioritise ensuring that full financial liability is brought in as early as possible.

UK JOINS ETIM INTERNATIONAL BOARD

UK TAKES ITS PLACE ON THE ETIM INTERNATIONAL BOARD

Margaret Fitzsimons, representing ETIM UK, has been elected to the Executive Board of ETIM International following the organisation’s recent AGM in Italy. Margaret will serve on the Board for the next three years alongside representatives from ETIM organisations in Norway, the Netherlands, North America, Finland, France and Germany. Members of the ETIM Executive Board are elected from the ETIM International General Assembly, the body representing each of its 19 country organisations.

Margaret has represented the UK on the General Assembly since 2017 when the UK joined ETIM International and the data standard was adopted by the UK in the electrotechnical sector. In late 2019 ETIM UK expanded to become a partnership between the EDA and the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF), with each organisation overseeing the management and promotion of the ETIM data model in their sectors.

Of her appointment, Margaret said, “I am delighted to be able to represent the UK’s interests during strategic discussions

about ETIM’s development. The universal adoption of the ETIM standard by UK manufacturers in the electrotechnical, building materials, plumbing, HVAC sectors continues to be a priority. The ETIM standard brings both reliability and consistency to the way technical product information is organised and made available to wholesalers and merchants. Without ETIM, the idiosyncratic organisation of product information wastes time and effort, putting the burden on the wholesalers or merchants to find workarounds.”

EDA CONFERENCEUNITESBUSINESS LEADERS FROM THE UK’S ELECTROTECHNICAL SECTOR

The economy and opportunities for business growth, circularity and sustainability, societal change and its impact on attracting and retaining the next generation of talent were among the strategic themes discussed at the EDA’s Power It Up Industry Insight Conference on Wednesday 13th November 2024.

Over 190 senior leaders from 94 EDA businesses, plus representatives from the electrical contracting sector and from trade associations along the supply chain, travelled to Crewe to hear from UK and International speakers on these topics of strategic significance to the UK’s electrotechnical sector.

The impressive speaker programme included entrepreneur, architect, innovator, inspirer and visionary Thomas Rau, who had travelled from the Netherlands to deliver “From Exit to Exist”, challenging

business leaders to turn their thinking about the linear economy completely on its head and to recalibrate the relationship between humans, the planet, and our closed system of natural resources.

The day conference was followed by an evening networking drinks reception and dinner, hosted by the voice of University Challenge, Roger Tilling. After dinner speaker Nicolas Hamilton, racing driver champion, a member of Channel

4’s Formula One coverage team, held the room with his personal story of overcoming adversity to become the first disabled driver to compete in the British Touring Car Championship.

A raffle in the evening raised £2,940 for the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC).

The cheque was presented to Jeremey Saunders, Global CEO at CEF, and President and Chair of the EIC, by special guest Nicolas Hamilton.

Two new faces have also joined the board this year: Marcus Leek, Chief Commercial Officer, representing Rexel UK, and Nick Edwell, Managing Director, Rapid Electrical Distributors, representing the Fegime UK buying group.

NEWYEAR’S REVOLUTION

How will issues such as climate change, energy transition and efficiency, and AI and digitalisation, impact the electrical industry in 2025? David Williams, Schneider Electric’s Vice President, Transactional Business for UK&I, shares his thoughts on the top three trends in the coming year.

MORE ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY WILL BE KEY TO ADDRESSING THE SKILLS GAP IN THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY

The rapid evolution of technology has led to a growing skills shortage in the electrical industry, impacting productivity and growth. And with an estimated 20% of the workforce in the UK (6.5 million people) will be significantly under skilled for their jobs by 2030, the expertise of engineers will be crucial.

We’ll see advances in technology making training more accessible to a wider range of people wanting to upskill in the face of increasing digitisation in the industry. AI, social media, QR-codes will all be used to make educational assets and courses available to those who may be less IT-savvy, delivering training in a way that best suits their needs.

I also expect there will be more opportunities for people wanting to join the electrical industry through apprenticeship schemes and career change programmes to develop the new talent we need to recruit as the industry evolves and demand increases.

CUSTOMER BUDGET CONSTRAINTS WILL MEAN MORE RETROFITS PROJECTS RATHER THAN RIP AND REPLACE

Customers recognise the need to modernise outdated electrical infrastructure to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and help them meet their sustainability goals.

Budget constraints will make retrofits the preferred choice for many in the next 12 months. For contractors it will be important to address customers’ urgent needs to deliver increased energy efficiency but also think about the longerterm benefits of the equipment selected and the potential return on investment over time.

NEW REGULATIONS WILL MAKE ACTIVE SAFETY MORE OF A PRIORITY

UK Wiring Regulations are being updated to improve safety and energy efficiency. These updates include the Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs) to prevent electrical hazards and changes to Part L, which focus on energy efficiency in buildings. As a result, there's growing demand for smart, connected solutions that help monitor energy use, manage maintenance, and reduce costs with better visibility and remote control.

This will be specific to certain installations such as high-rise residential buildings, houses with multiple occupancy purposebuilt student accommodation, care homes, and facilities that house irreplaceable goods. The emphasis on safety for high-occupancy and high-value buildings signals an industry shift towards adopting advanced fault detection solutions, likely impacting both new projects and retrofitting initiatives.

Customers will be looking for increased reliability, resilience, and longevity so there will be increased opportunity to deliver a more preventative approach to fault detection. This will help customers to better anticipate what may go wrong and reduce downtime, limiting the impact on their business.

BEST OF BOTH

It’s no longer enough for a product to just perform well, it's got to look good too. And, in today's fastpaced, technology-driven world, even products that were once seen as utilitarian –such as wiring accessories like sockets, switches and USB chargers –there is a growing demand for stylish designs that align with and enhance the aesthetic of an interior. And, whilst wiring accessories may be small, insignificant they are not.

Good design can really pack a punch when it comes to the overall finish of an installation, particularly in open plan spaces where electrical accessories are more visible.

Hazel

Whittingham, Product Manager for BG Electrical, looks at how the latest wiring accessories manage to combine form with functionality.

Appealing aesthetics

Whether it's at home or work, people want their spaces to feel good and function well, and since electrical components are often visible, their design can impact the overall atmosphere of a room. Wiring accessories that have been thoughtfully

designed, with sleek finishes and stylish colours, complement rather than detract from the surrounding décor, helping to elevate the space and make the essential wiring accessory products less intrusive.

More than good looks

However, looking good is not enough. Specified wiring accessory products need to deliver not only on looks but also on practical functionality –for example with the integration of fast charging capabilities. With the growing dependence on mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices, the demand for rapid, efficient and reliable charging has never been greater –and looks set to rise.

Sockets incorporating high speed USB ports eliminate the need for bulky adaptors whilst delivering a convenient space-saving, clutter-free –and aesthetically pleasing –solution that provides end users with dedicated charging points delivering higher power for faster charging, significantly improving the entire user experience.’

Practicality and aesthetics

Specifically designed to answer this need and launched by Luceco under its specialist wiring and accessories brand BG Electrical, the Evolve range of decorative switches and sockets is ideal for both domestic and commercial applications and is the perfect way to ensure all essential power points enhance décor rather than detract from it. This range also makes decorative metal switches an accessible option for older

homes which have no earth on the lighting circuit too, as no earthing is required for the decorative metal front plates due to their clever construction method.

Aesthetically attractive, the slimline switches and sockets are designed with screwless face plates which easily clip on and off and are available in eight different colours including brushed steel, black chrome, and matt blue as well as satin brass, polished copper, matt black, matt grey, and pearlescent white.

The range includes switches, sockets, innovative fast charge USB sockets, Wi-Fi range extenders, touch dimmer switches, as well as Grid range extensions and Euro module range extensions to combine power, data, TV, telephone and audio. The Evolve range includes a 25-year warranty (10 years on USB and Wi-Fi Extender sockets), with Asta Approval for assurance that these are best in class when it comes to wiring accessories. Colour coded terminals and captive screws also ensure a ‘right first time’ approach to any wiring installation.

POWER UP

Power tools by their nature speed up time consuming or laborious work. However, not all power tools enable the same level of efficiency in day-to-day tasks. Cordless tools will typically offer greater efficiency when compared to corded alternatives. This is because battery powered tools provide flexibility and ease of use by eliminating the need to find a power source in the work area and manage the safe routing of cables. Due to battery and tool innovations, customers have never had a greater choice of cordless products, including for the most demanding tasks. However, when recommending cordless tools, there are a number of specific features that will be beneficial to customers to help them streamline their work and improve productivity.

Single battery platform

Significant efficiency gains can be made by selecting tools that share a common battery platform. The batteries can simply be swapped between tools as required, rather than needing to find the right battery for the right tool when moving from one task to another. It also means simpler recharging as the same charger can be used for all batteries used on site. As an example, the Makita 18V LXT range features over 270 products including drills, impact drivers, circular saws, metal saws, routers, drywall cutters, multitools, wall scanners and work lights.

Having the right power tools to hand can help significantly improve efficiency on site. Here, Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, highlights some of the factors that wholesalers should be aware of when recommending products to customers.

Advances in both battery and tool technology means that the run times offered by leading manufacturers are now far greater than with previous generation products. However, when charging is necessary, choosing a battery platform that has been engineered for rapid recharging times means less wasted time and greater productivity. Additionally, there are ‘power source kits’ available that include several batteries and the required charger to enable users to always have a spare battery to hand, eliminating any need to wait for battery recharging. This also allows customers to purchase ‘body only’ tools as they expand and upgrade their kit in the future.

Brushless motors

Another key tool feature to be aware of is brushless motors. While motors with brushes are effective, the motor is driven by contact between the carbon brushes and the rotary electrical switch on the rotor. This contact causes friction that generates heat and wastes energy. It also causes wear of

the brushes, which must be periodically replaced throughout the life of the tool. In contrast, a tool with a brushless motor is driven using contact-free electromagnetism. When the tool is activated, the on-board electronic circuit sends electric currents to convert the copper coils within the motor into electromagnets. This creates north and south magnetic poles that attract and repel the permanent magnets on the rotor shaft to rotate it continuously. By eliminating the friction, and therefore the wasted energy, a brushless motor can operate more efficiently. This type of motor can also produce more torque per weight, meaning less power is needed to achieve the same results. The result of this is that a tool with a brushless motor can extend run times by up to 50% per battery charge. This means greater productivity and fewer recharges throughout a day.

Optimal power delivery

When carrying out demanding tasks, it is important to ensure that the tools can match the load requirements. Products

from leading manufacturers may include technologies that allow the tools to adapt to the resistance of the material. For example, Makita’s Automatic Torque Drive Technology (ADT) automatically adjusts the speed and torque based on the load conditions during operation to ensure optimum performance.

Portable power sources

Another way that efficiency can be improved is by enabling significantly extended run-times with portable power supplies. For example, the Makita PDC1200 and PDC1500 backpack-mounted power sources provide 33Ah and 43Ah of power respectively for uninterrupted operation. These can be connected to a wide variety of machines via adaptors that slide into the battery mounting on the tool or using a direct connection on compatible products.

Streamlining dust management

Although best practice dust management

is sometimes sacrificed in favour of getting a job done quickly, it is absolutely essential. This is particularly true when completing a task that generates respirable crystalline silica (RCS). These tiny particles are extremely hazardous to health and are produced when materials like concrete, masonry and stone are cut, drilled or otherwise processed. Therefore, tool technologies that can streamline dust management are worth recommending to customers.

One feature that can help achieve this is ‘auto’ functionality on dust extractors. This has been common on extractors with power take-off where corded tools can be

connected to the extractor to start it when the tool is activated. However, it is now possible to achieve the same with cordless tools. For customers who are using an older model of extractor without the built-in connectivity, there are adaptors available that allow tools to be connected wirelessly to any mains powered extractor that has a power take-off facility. On the other hand, if customers are looking to add a new extractor to their kit, there are cordless options available for improved ease of use and flexibility.

The correct choice of power tools can make a significant difference to the user’s experience and the level of productivity and efficiency they can achieve. Although the specification of two tools may look similar, it is important to look at the built-in tool technologies and other factors to make the best recommendation.

Brinley Buckley

Carl Kammerling

the home of C.K Tools, discusses what wholesalers should consider when it comes to selecting the right hand tools.

EASE THE STRAIN

Tool choice is a careful consideration for electrical professionals and wholesalers alike and can make or break a reputation. For any electrician, an inadequate tool purchase can lead to downtime, a slow work rate, and ultimately an unforecasted replacement purchase, all impacting bottom lines. A tool that delivers a poor finish can lead to reputational damage and prevent repeat business as well as being unsafe to use. And in the long term, a bad recommendation from the service desk will result in a lack of trust for the stockist.

There are a number of factors to consider when it comes to choosing which hand tools to supply, to ensure wholesalers are providing the best, and safest, solutions for their customers and driving that all important customer loyalty and repeat purchase.

The hidden dangers to consider Many workplace accidents are down to having inadequate or sometimes incorrect tools for the job in hand. For example a screwdriver

made from low quality materials with a blunt tip can cause a painful puncture injury if it slips and electrical shocks can occur when using tools without the appropriate insulation properties.

But there are also the more gradual, hidden hazards from using sub-quality tools which aren’t ergonomically designed for maximum comfort and ease of use. Over time, prolonged use can cause soreness, aches, pains, fatigue and when these symptoms are ignored – even musculoskeletal injuries.

Let’s take Repetetive Strain Injury (RSI) as an example. Did you know that half a million people

workforce suffer with RSI? Although commonly

extended computer use, those working in the electrical sectors are equally vulnerable, if not more so. The condition (and those related to it) costs the UK around £3 billion each year in lost work hours and production. For those who are self-employed and afflicted by RSI, that cost is carried by them, including lost work hours, treatment and recovery time.

Retailers are ideally placed to provide accurate advice on these issues and offer product solutions which fit the latest guidance. Understanding the latest product innovations and the factors that

end users want and need will help customers complete their jobs efficiently and safely. The Health and Safety Executive offers clear guidelines for the prevention and support of RSI in work: use power tools where applicable and appropriate, select tools that are right for the job, consider lighter tools, and those that minimise the amount of force needed.

Listen to the industry

Here at C.K Tools the starting point for any new product is listening to what the industry is asking for. By working closely with a panel of professionals we can develop innovative solutions and product evolutions which tackle the everyday issues electricians face and make their job that much more efficient.

Our NPD team will then consider the design, the multi-functionality, the durability, the materials, and of course –the ergonomics. There’s no product without a clear thought process behind it;

each tool is methodically planned, CAD designed, prototyped and thoroughly tested to develop the quality hand tools which C.K Tools is known for. Hand tools have to be inherently comfortable and safe to handle. Ergonomic tools are designed to fit your hand and the task naturally, helping to prevent award postures, harmful pressure points and other health related issues which can emerge from repetitive tasks such as RSI.

Opt for premium hand tools

Strong, durable and high-performing hand tools need to be made from exceptional materials. Material choice is of great importance to C.K Tools and has contributed considerably to the reputation we’ve built over more than 200 years. We’re committed to developing innovative tools which offer exceptional strength and durability. Many CK Tools products, such as the award-winning Dextro VDE range of screwdrivers are made in Germany for

this very reason.

Each screwdriver features precisionengineered tips and is torque-tested up to 20Nm, highlighting the strength of steel sourced from North Rhine, a region renowned for its steel production. Designed for exceptional durability, these screwdrivers provide unmatched comfort and control, ensuring users can complete any task with ease.

Stocking a premium hand tool demonstrates an understanding of the challenges electricians face, the requirements of the trade and their health and wellbeing. With some much riding on the performance, reliability and convenience of these tools, it’s this emphasis on quality which is the key securing repeat business and a strong bottom line.

Smoke alarms are essential for protecting building occupants, particularly in domestic properties.

According to the Home Office, the fire service in England responded to nearly 140,000 fires in the year leading up to March 2024, resulting in 251 deaths and more than 6,000 non-fatal injuries. Unfortunately, in many of these incidents, smoke alarms were either not installed or not functioning. In fact, 24% of dwelling fires attended by the fire service had no smoke alarm, contributing to 34% of all dwelling fatalities.

SAFETY FIRST

When it comes to life safety solutions, electrical wholesalers play a crucial role in supporting the selection process with the right knowledge. Simon Jones, UK Marketing Manager at Kidde Safety Europe, outlines key considerations for recommending smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to customers.

Choosing the right products

The reliability of alarms is crucial, and one of the most important factors is the power source to ensure proper performance. Statistics show that in 29% of domestic fires an alarm was present but failed to operate due to issues like missing or defective batteries.

Similarly, CO alarms are vital for detecting the invisible, odourless, and deadly gas that can emanate from fuelburning sources such as boilers, cookers and wood-burning fires. Each year in the UK, around 40 people die and more than 4,000 are seriously ill due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

For new properties, mains-powered alarms with battery back-up are required to minimise the risk of failure, as per Part B of the Building Regulations and Section 2 of the Scottish Building Standards. Since 2022, even existing properties in Scotland must have mains-powered alarms. BS5839-6, the code of practice for fire detection and alarm systems in domestic premises, recommends interconnected alarms, ensuring that when one activates, all alarms sound. Radio-frequency (RF) connectivity is a simple and effective way to interlink alarms. Additionally, alarms

with a sealed-in battery that lasts the 10year life of the alarm are recommended for added convenience and reliability. Wholesalers should also be able to guide customers on the correct number and placement of alarms. While the exact requirements depend on the property size and layout, in England and Wales, smoke alarms are mandatory in all escape route circulation areas. BS5839 Part 6 recommends category LD2, which includes smoke alarms in all escape routes and high-risk areas like living rooms. A heat alarm must also be installed in kitchens. This is compulsory in Scotland and Northern Ireland. While battery-powered smoke alarms are available for replacing existing units, wholesalers should highlight the benefits of upgrading to mainspowered, interlinked alarms, which offer greater safety and peace of mind.

Special considerations for vulnerable occupants

In higher-risk environments, such as sheltered accommodation for the elderly or disabled, wireless heat and smoke

“ Wholesalers should recommend only the highest quality products that comply with relevant standards.”

alarms can be linked to output devices like telecare systems, strobes and sounders, providing an enhanced level of safety. These alarms can be connected through relay solutions for added protection.

Carbon monoxide alarms: Legal requirements

CO alarms are mandatory in all new homes in the UK with a fixed combustion appliance or flue, and required in existing homes where such an appliance is installed. In Scotland, CO alarms are compulsory in all homes, including existing properties, and in all rented homes in England and Wales.

Testing and product warranties

Wholesalers should recommend only the highest quality products that comply with relevant standards. Smoke alarms must meet EN14604, heat alarms should comply with BS5446-2, and CO alarms must meet EN50291-1. Ensure that products are tested and certified by an independent, accredited third party, and check that the manufacturer provides proper documentation. Long term manufacturer warranties also demonstrate product quality and offer reassurance to customers.

Technical support

Recommending products from manufacturers that provide strong technical support is essential, particularly for more complex solutions. This ensures that product-related queries are answered quickly and that customers receive guidance on compliant installations. Kidde, with over 100 years of heritage in fire safety, offers dedicated technical product support from a team of specialists. By equipping themselves with the right information, wholesalers can offer valuable advice and service, helping to drive repeat business and ensure customers' safety.

THE FULL PACKAGE

Fire alarm systems are broadly divided into two main groupings – ‘conventional’ fire alarm systems and analogue addressable ‘intelligent’ systems - with each type best suited to different kinds of premises.

Conventional systems

Conventional, or four-wire, fire alarm systems have been traditionally used in smaller properties such as shops and restaurants. They work by dividing the building into a number of detection zones, with the detectors and call points within each zone hardwired on dedicated twocore cable to the control panel. There may be multiple detectors on a single zone.

A separate two-core, fire-protected cable for the alarm’s sounders is required as they are wired on different circuits. If a detector is activated, the control panel identifies the circuit that contains the triggered device and so indicates the zone from which the fire alarm has originated, but the area then has to be manually searched to pinpoint the individual device.

Neil Baldwin, Managing Director of ESP, looks at the different types of fire protection solutions available and highlights the whole package of support from ESP that wholesalers can pass on to their customers.

Because the majority of conventional detectors are simple, two state devices, they can only be in either a normal or fire condition. Although modern components and quality system design can play a part in reducing potential problems, it is not uncommon for conventional systems to generate unwanted alarms. As such, conventional systems are not suitable in large buildings which could potentially have over 50 zones in order to correctly protect the property to the prevailing industry standards. A conventional system would prove a costly and time consuming exercise.

Intelligent systems

Addressable or ‘intelligent’ fire alarm systems overcome these limitations and are designed for large commercial premises and more complex networked systems. They

are more expensive and more complicated than conventional four-wire systems, having increased flexibility, intelligence, speed of identification and scope of control.

In addressable systems, different types of initiating devices are wired in one or more single loops around the premises, requiring less cabling than conventional systems, with each detector or call point having its own unique address. The fire control panel receives information and status reports from each device and indicates its exact location if there is a fault, contamination or activation via smoke or heat detection. As these control panels have become more sophisticated and more powerful, they are capable of handling an increasing number of loops per panel and it is possible to network numerous panels together to increase the capacity.

Two-wire technology

Two-wire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. However, unlike standard conventional four wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, the new intelligent two-wire technology allows all devices to be wired on the same set of twocore zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material cost.

A range of solutions

ESP’s extensive fire protection product range offers a solution to any size of project. The range is broadly divided into two categories; The MAGfire four-wire and the MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm systems are aimed at small to medium contractors, offering them a highly flexible and adaptable system that will save them time and money on the installation process. Whilst the MAGfire addressable systems are suitable for large commercial premises and more complex networked systems.

Design service

A dedicated ESP design service allows contractors to access a system design facility that will cover fire systems as well as CCTV systems. Available to any size of business, from local electricians to national contracting companies, the aim is to provide expertise in choosing the right products and solutions to create a scheme that meets all the requirements and objectives of the project in question, and that is compliant with all the relevant regulations and standards.

From an initial enquiry to discuss the requirements, the next stage will be one of information and measurements gathering. For larger and more complex design schemes, a visit to site will be carried out for a detailed survey. With all the relevant information gathered, including drawings and specifications, a suitable design proposal for a fire system will be created and supplied to the client along with a quotation. Two-way interaction between customer and the ESP design team throughout the process will be of paramount importance to ensure the design scheme meets all the necessary requirements.

Fire commissioning service

The commissioning service offered by ESP adds another dimension to the company’s fire protection offer. It is designed to ensure that all installed ESP systems operate correctly and are fully compliant with the latest BS5839-1 regulations. A qualified engineer will confirm that the system has reached the relevant British Standard and will issue a certificate on completion of the project prior to system handover. Dedicated ESP commissioning engineers are located throughout the UK to provide access to this new service to a wide-reaching audience.

Complete package

At the end of 2021, ESP added another string to its credentials bow, with the announcement that the company had been awarded BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) accreditation for its fire design service.

Wholesalers are in prime position to keep their customers up to date, not just with the latest products and solutions from ESP, but the whole package of support they can access from design to commissioning.

SANGAMO TIME SWITCHES

Sangamo has been manufacturing its Round Pattern Time Switches for over 65 years, and in that time has sold more than 11 million units. The Round Pattern Time Switch is trusted by installers for a wide variety of applications, not just because of its reliability, but also due to its ease of use. The simple dial and levers make setting the switch up for daily fixed timings a breeze with no complicated menu options to navigate through. All Round Pattern Time Switches are also 20A rated, making it more robust. The switches are split into four categories:

● Basic ‘black dial’ 24-hour time clock for simple on and off switching of up to 20A

● Standard 24-hour ‘red dial’ switch with added 100-hour battery reserve

● Solar Range - specially designed for lighting applications

● Digital Range - the newest addition combines the high capacity and reliability of the electro-mechanical models but provides full 7-day programming.

Sangamo regularly hears from people with Round Pattern Time Switches still going strong after 40 and 50 years. When they eventually need a new switch, they reasonably assume, because of its age, that it might not be possible to get a direct likefor-like replacement. However, because the original design has never needed to be updated, an RPTS you buy today is completely interchangeable with one bought decades ago. The Sangamo range of specialist time switches and heating controls is distributed through ESP, part of the Scolmore Group.

ELEX 2025

Inferior quality connector products which don’t meet the required standards and therefore represent a safety hazard can present a multitude of problems for contractors and end users. Here, Jake Green discusses the importance of compliance and explains how Ovia, part of the Scolmore Group, meets the standards that installation couplers should be conforming to.

Connectors are a method of joining one conductor to another and are capable of passing larger currents and voltages. A poor connection passing such currents can cause high resistance faults which could generate enough heat to degrade insulation which in turn can lead to a breakdown in the circuit and, in extreme cases, result in fire.

In light of this recent influx of inferior copies we would like to draw attention to the inter-compatibility of connectors and look at some of the standards that installation couplers should be conforming to, as well as some of the associated dangers and risks.

Standard IEC EN 61535 – relates to the installation of couplers intended for permanent connection in fixed

“ A poor connection passing such currents can cause high resistance faults which could generate enough heat to degrade insulation which in turn can lead to a breakdown in the circuit and, in extreme cases, result in fire.”

installations. Clause 9 focuses on dangerous compatibility.

Clause 9.1 An installation coupler system shall be designed and constructed so that unintended or improper connection is prevented. It should be noted that unintended or improper connections include single pole connection, except for earth-to-earth connection. Compliance is checked by inspection and the following test. It shall not be possible to insert the installation male connector into the installation female connector resulting in a dangerous situation. Engagement of

the installation male and installation female connector is attempted in any unintended configuration using a force of 80 N for installation couplers marked as 10A, 16A, 20A; or 120 N for installation couplers marked as 25A and 32A. The force shall be applied on the same axis of the connection for one minute during which time the installation male and installation female connector contacts shall not engage.

Clause 9.2 It shall not be possible, within a given installation coupler system, to engage an installation male connector with an installation female connector:

● with a different number of live poles: exceptions may be admitted for installation female connectors which are specially constructed for the purpose of allowing engagement with installation male connectors of a lower number of poles, provided that no dangerous situation can arise

● without earthing contact if the installation male connector is an installation male connector with earthing contact

● with different phase to neutral voltage ratings or different rated currents

Compliance is checked by the test according to 9.1.

Clause 9.3 Installation couplers of different systems from the same manufacturer shall not be dangerously compatible. Compliance is checked by the test according to 9.1.

Clause 9.4 Installation couplers according to this standard shall not be compatible with systems specified in standard sheets of IEC 60309, IEC 60320, IEC 60906 and with the national household plug and socket-outlet systems of the country where the product is placed on the market. Compliance is checked by manual test and in case of doubt by examination of drawings. Incorrect polarity of connections could be considered as unintended or improper connection and could result in a dangerous situation. If the polarity of a connection is incorrect then the

“ In the unfortunate event that something goes wrong - such as a short or fault with an appliance - it may be possible to expose someone to a serious shockhazard, as it may impair or prevent operationof protective devices in the circuit.”

appliance/fixture connected will either not work, resulting in time spent fault finding or, in some cases, appliance/fixtures can remain live, even if the power switch is turned off to them.

Clause 12 of the standard deals with Construction.

Clause 12.10 Installation couplers shall be provided with retaining means which engages automatically when the installation coupler or cap is connected, and which is capable of disengagement for disconnecting. It shall only be possible to render the means of retention ineffective by a deliberate or intentional act. For installation couplers classified in accordance with 7.4.1 intended for installation in a readily accessible location the means of disengagement shall only be made by the use of a key or tool.

Compliance is checked by the following test: The fully engaged installation coupler shall be subjected to

a smooth axial traction force of 80 N for a period of one minute, during which the retaining device shall be fully engaged. The installation coupler shall not loosen or become disconnected.

Should the installation coupler loosen, this may result in the earthing integrity of a circuit not being maintained. In the unfortunate event that something goes wrong - such as a short or fault with an appliance - it may be possible to expose someone to a serious shock hazard, as it may impair or prevent operation of protective devices in the circuit.

The Ovia Click Flow connector range is engineered to make the wiring of complex lighting circuits easier and safer using a combination of distribution hubs, managements boxes and the vast combination of connectors that make up the Flow range.

As part of the Scolmore Group company, Ovia is firmly established as a serious operator in the lighting industry and going from strength to strength. The extensive Click Flow connector range has been brought under the Ovia umbrella to complete the offer to lighting designers, contractors and installers.

We have highlighted some of the standards that installation couplers should be conforming to. Safety is a critical market requirement, and it is vital that manufacturers identify the required regulations and develop products that meet the required standards. All of our products are independently third party verified to provide the reassurance and confidence that the products being sold or installed are safe and fit for the intended purpose.
