QUALITY MATTERS

Iwas recently asked my opinion on the England men’s football team appointing Thomas Tuchel, a German, as its new Head Coach. Despite my brief following of football over the summer I was caught a little bit off guard because I didn’t even know England had appointed a new coach – never mind the finer details of the individual’s nationality! After a lengthy thought process (five seconds) I summised that Mr Tuchel was probably appointed because he was the best available person for the job before my mind wandered back to more pressing matters like what to have for dinner

No prizes for spotting the awkward segueing here but ‘best available for the job’ is a term often applied across almost all trades and industries, and not just in terms of personnel, but products and tools as well Finances of course always play a big part in the choices we make but in an ideal world we all want the best thing we can get – whether it’s a parent finding the best school for their child, a company looking for the best candidate when filling a job position, or a golfer choosing the best clubs that will increase their chances of glory.

From a wholesaler’s point of view it is also imperative that they offer their customers quality products from reputable brands, while on the pages of this magazine we will endeavour to make sure you stay up to date on the latest innovations in the electrotechnical market so you know what you need to be stocking up on

Reputations build over time and in the last issue we wished a happy 135th anniversary to Carhartt In this issue Stearn Electrical takes us down memory lane as it celebrates 100 years in the industry This is another significant milestone to be admired and to have been around for that amount of time you’re definitely doing something right Which brings me on finally to yours truly A photo popped up recently on my Facebook memories from the Three Peaks Challenge I undertook in 2010 alongside a few of the other trade editors on behalf of the Electrical Industries Charity, or EEIBA as it was known then. That was 14 years ago, so we do resemble a group of sixth form students doing our Duke of Edinburgh Award However, I’m pleased to say that most of the individuals in the photo are still in the editorial game in some form or another – and I might even argue we all know what we’re doing But that will have to wait until another day because unfortunately I‘ve run out of space

See you next month

I hope you enjoy the issue

Meckel has installed Marshall-Tufflex’s MT Supertube and Wire Basket to ensure an efficient, compliant and durable cable management system as part of the £105m major redevelopment works at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital The products were crucial in meeting the stringent requirements of the hospital environment, contributing to the success of this significant healthcare development

The substantial project, procured through the Crown Commercial Services (CCS) framework, which started in 2022 and is due for completion by Summer 2025, involves constructing a new clinical building to improve mater nity, neonatal, theatres and critical care services The five-storey acute services and ward blocks will house moder n and enhanced facilities, including a delivery suite, midwifery-led birthing and neonatal intensive care units with parent accommodation, ambulatory surgery, theatre suites and a critical care unit with bespoke accommodation for relatives.

Working in collaboration with Kier Mechanical Electrical Division (KME), Meckel was contracted to carry out all the electrical installation works, including cable containment As the specification of the right cable management solution for the extensive project was critical, Meckel approached Marshall-Tufflex to discuss

the requirements and the suitability of MT Supertube and Wire Basket solutions

After confirming that these products met the specific needs of the hospital’s environment, Meckel has used MT Supertube and Wire Basket extensively throughout the project MT Supertube is a three-layer heavy gauge conduit comprising polyethylene inter nal and

exter nal layers over a continuous aluminium tube that provides additional mechanical strength It was chosen for its LS0H properties and excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) screening performance – all of which are essential for ensuring continued, issue-free performance in a healthcare setting

Scolmore has announced that it has settled a dispute with Dean Electrical Wholesale, Premspec Group and with Dennis Boseley, the founder of Dean Electrical

The settlement represents another significant victory for Scolmore, because Dean and Premspec were selling counterfeit products into the UK market, which they had acquired in China Scolmore took a stand because it wanted to urgently get these products off the market

The dispute arose after Scolmore became aware that Dean had been selling counterfeit accessory products in the UK, which it was mixing with, and selling alongside, genuine Scolmore products

The counterfeits had been purchased in China by Premspec, under the instructions of Boseley

As soon as Scolmore became aware of the counterfeits, it took action to recover any remaining stock from Dean. The defendants have now paid Scolmore substantial damages and costs and given

strict undertakings.

Managing Director of Scolmore, Kevin Beech, said: “It’s shocking that some people are happy to go to China and think they have found a bargain alter native to a genuine Scolmore product - supplied by a factory which is nothing to do with Scolmore, and which is unable to provide any certification or proof of origin These are mains voltage products, and the defendants took no steps to even make sure they were safe - before selling them on to unsuspecting buyers ”

Carl Kammerling Inter national (CKI) has partnered with the German brand Jokari, known for its high-quality range of professional tools for stripping wires and cables.

The partnership will see Jokari join the CKI brand portfolio, giving the premium tool business exclusive distribution rights across the UK and Ireland Wholesalers will now have access to the full portfolio of the Jokari range through CKI The brand is well known for its high quality and ergonomically designed cable knives and strippers –providing electricians, heating engineers and plumbers alike with a reliable and safe way for stripping cables.

Michael Chappell, Product and Marketing Executive at CKI, commented: “Jokari is a market leader in cable stripping solutions across Europe and we’re excited to bring this knowledge and success to the UK

“At CKI, we’re proud of our reputation of producing high quality hand tools that meet the most demanding needs of trade professionals. The Jokari range is in line with this ethos - offering a solution that many of our customers need, with the exceptional high quality and performance customers expect from a CKI brand

“It’s easy to see why Jokari has such a loyal following due to the increased efficiencies, precise cuts and consistent

performance each product provides, helping busy tradespeople get the job done in less time and to a higher standard Through this partnership, there isn’t a single cable in the UK and Irish market that we cannot provide a stripping solution for.”

THE MAKING OF STEARN ELECTRIC

Ben Lincoln, Publications and Services Manager at Stearn Electric, takes us back more than 100 years to trace the origins of the company and the start of its journey to becoming an industry super-distributor.

As a respected name in the electrical sector, Stearn Electric has a reputation for maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and forging excellent customer relations

With the company’s 100 year anniversary just around the corner there’s no better time to look at how Stearn’s founder, Mr Charles Stearn, made a name for himself in assisting with the development of the world’s first incandescent lamps to be used in a domestic setting, before going on to set up Stearn Electric in 1924

Scientific expertise

Charles Stearn was an expert on vacuum pumps and in 1874 met Charles Topham at a point when Topham’s father was helping to blow glass for Stearn’s spectrum tubes and radiometers

A few years later, the renowned physicist, chemist and inventor Sir Joseph Swan began producing experimental electric lamps and part of this process involved sealing the filaments into evacuated glass bulbs – an exceptionally skilled process Once Swan had prepared and carbonised the filaments in his own laboratory he would send them off to Charles Stearn’s Birkenhead based lab where Topham would then carry out the delicate procedure.

During this experimental phase Charles Stearn assisted Joseph Swan in developing a method of processing that removed all the air from the bulb to avoid it blackening This involved taking the carbon filaments from Swan’s experiments and inserting them into tubes that had been expertly made by Topham

The first bulb was demonstrated in 1878 and in 1880 Swan’s newly patented bulb

became the world’s first incandescent lamp to be used in a private residence when it was installed at the home of Sir William Armstrong at Cragside, Northumberland Word spread quickly and by 1881 demand had grown to such a level that a dedicated factory was required, at which point Swan acquired new premises in Benwell and employed Topham to pass his skills on to newly appointed factory staff

Joseph Swan is now widely credited as being one of the pioneering founding fathers of the incandescent light bulb and Charles Stearn undoubtedly played a vital role in the early development of this worldaltering invention

Reunited

In 1898, as part of the Viscose Spinning Syndicate, Stearn and Topham reunited to develop the continuous filament spinning process and the machinery needed to wash

and collect the viscose yarns

The Syndicate made small volumes in Stearn's lamp filament factory and it was here that the inventive genius of Stearn and Topham came into play and a balanced working process was evolved

After revolutionising the industry in spinning viscose thread into artificial silk, Stearn returned to making incandescent light bulbs and 1907 he formed the Stearn Electric Lamp Company

A new chapter

In 1918, Stearn Electric Lamp Company was invited to join the Electric Lamp Manufacturers' Association of Great Britain and Stearn was asked to represent the company on the council Sadly, following a short illness, Stearn passed away in February 1919, aged 75. Stearn's death was a major loss and in 1920 Sir Maxwell Hicks bought out the shareholders and took over the company, becoming Chairman.

The new board faced a formidable task in essentially building the company back up from scratch They were offered a ‘SuperWholesalers' agreement which enabled them to continue to supply the wholesale trade on the same terms as other manufacturers. The main condition of this agreement was that Stearn should cease to manufacture lamps and this arrangement laid the foundations for the strong ties with wholesalers and distributors which still exist to this day

In April 1921 Stearn Electric Lamp Company was wound up and a new company, the Stearn Electric Company was formed On October 18th 1924 it received its certificate of incorporation and

expansion soon followed, with branch offices opened in Nottingham, Liverpool and Birmingham in 1925.

Evolution of the ‘Super Distributer’

Whilst lamps and lighting dominated the early years and resulted in the ‘National Super Distributor’ title, it was the introduction of domestic appliances, heating and controls that really solidified Stearn’s reputation with suppliers and customers

The evolution continued at pace with the introduction of the company strapline ‘Your Other Warehouse’ – further emphasising the support network now being offered to national and independent electrical wholesalers

Additional strength

The acquisition of Stearn Electric Co Ltd by a family with a group of specialist electrical distributors in the early 90s gave the company the wherewithal to strengthen further

A key part of this included the 1996 acquisition of Popes, the lighting distribution arm of a world leading lamp manufacturer, Osram This purchase reaffirmed Stearn’s position as a major lighting distributor Following on from the Popes acquisition, Stearns distribution of focal point fires received a substantial boost when it acquired GAD. A specialist distributor in the field, GAD simply required national distribution through a reputable family business with a service driven stocking network

Positioned as a national stocking network to the electrotechnical industry, present day Stearn Electric offers a wide range of electrical products and solutions, from lamps and lighting, major domestic appliances through to water treatment, wiring accessories, renewables and smart technologies, to name but a few

The winner of the September competition, sponsored by Sangamo, was Steve Bridgeman

THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Jake Green, Head of Technical Engagement with Scolmore Group, considers conditions where current may flow in more than one direction, and where it may be necessary to select protective devices that are ‘bidirectional’ in nature rather than ‘unidirectional’.

BEAMA issued a technical bulletin in 2024 detailing a concern where certain protective devices failed to safely operate when required where current flowed in either direction

An electrical installation having more than one source of supply current may create the conditions where current can flow in more than one direction Where this is the case, it is necessary that protective devices are able to operate correctly in whichever direction current flows

Amendment 3

To address the issue of current flowing in two directions Amendment 3 of BS7671 (BS7671: 2018+A3:2024) was issued on 31st July 2024 and is to be implemented immediately The amendment introduced one new requirement (Regulation 530 3 201) and two new definitions

Bidirectional protective device – A protective device where it is intended by the manufacturer that a source of supply is connected to either or both sets of connection terminals

Unidirectional protective device - A protective device where it is intended by the manufacturer that a source of supply is only connected to one defined set of connection terminals

Regulation 530 3 201 requires that due account is taken by the designer and installer of the likely direction of current flow and select protective equipment accordingly

DIRECTION OF CONNECTION

Single-pole, single-pole and neutral (twopole) and double-pole devices are typically

labelled with ‘In’ or ‘Supply’ and ‘Out’ or ‘Load’

Where devices are labelled ‘In/Out’ or ‘Supply/Load’ they will always be unidirectional in nature, and under certain conditions should not be selected for use Unidirectional devices can always be used where there are no alternative sources of supply. Bidirectional devices will not be specifically labelled with in and out and are likely to be labelled with ‘L/N’ or ‘L1/N1’ and ‘L2/N2’ Bidirectional devices are likely to be necessary where multiple sources of supply exist

WHERE THE NORMAL

protective device whilst the supply side protective device is connected to the busbar within the consumer unit

SUPPLY

OPERATES IN PARALLEL WITH A SECOND SOURCE OF SUPPLY

Consider an example where a solar PV system has no battery storage system installed. In this condition power flow will be in one direction only (unidirectional);

Consider a second example, where a solar PV system has an attached battery storage system installed In this condition, power flow will be bidirectional; that is current can flow from the solar PV generator to the normal supply or to the battery storage system, and also from the normal supply to the battery storage system In such a condition, the protective device will be required to be bidirectional in nature

Fig 1 details the likely direction of current flow where a solar PV installation contains a battery storage system

However, even in this condition, Regulation 530 3 201 will still apply even though the source of supply is unidirectional A bidirectional protective device would be required since within a consumer unit/distribution board the supply from the inverter is likely to be connected to the load side of the

Where a prosuming installation exists, and an electrical installation containing a solar PV system and battery storage system is a prosuming installation, Regulation 826 1 2 2 requires account to be taken of all directions of current flow and polarity

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the general requirements of detailed above, further requirements exist in relation to the use of RCDs and protection against thermal effects. Regulation 551 7 1 requires two conditions to be fulfilled:

- Protection against thermal effects (Chapter 42) and protection against overcurrent (Chapter 43) must remain effective in all situations

- Where an RCD provides additional protection (415 1) for a circuit connecting the generator set to the installation, the

RCD must disconnect all live conductors (including the neutral).

The effect of the second bullet point is that where a solar PV system or similar is installed the protective device must be capable of switching the neutral conductor

PERIODIC INSPECTION AND TESTING

When carrying out periodic inspection and testing in those installations where Regulation 530 3 201 now applies great care will need to be taken regarding the relevant coding associated with the presence of unidirectional/bidirectional devices Whilst a Code 1 (immediate danger) will rarely be necessary there may be situations where either a Code 2 or Code 3 will apply The inspector will need to consult the current guidance issued

within the industry for help in selecting the appropriate code

CONCLUSION

With the increasing installation of prosuming electrical installations it will be necessary for designers and installers to utilise bidirectional protective devices

SPLENDID ISOLATION

Michael Chappell, Product and Marketing Executive at Carl Kammerling International, the home of Kasp Security, discusses why supplying trusted tools is an essential step in helping customers to achieve safe isolation.

Safe isolation is more than just a routine task for electrical professionals – it’s arguably the most important part of the job and demonstrates a commitment to prioritising the protection of others.

A thorough and multi staged approach is required when it comes to achieving safe isolation, including the implementation of high electrical standards, adhering to the latest guidance and selecting and maintaining a high standard of electrical equipment to complete the project effectively and safely

The opportunity for electrical wholesalers is clear; providing a wide choice of tools and devices to support electricians in protecting themselves and others. The supply of this equipment is not only an opportunity to generate sales, but an opportunity to save lives

SUPPLYING THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

Isolating an electrical network involves several important steps, from isolating it at the energy source, verifying no voltage is present and the usage of effective lockout devices to prevent the circuit being re-energised until after work is complete – for each step of the process it is vital that effective, trusted tools and equipment are used

This includes a voltage indicator, with the means to prove it is operational usually with the use of a dedicated proving unit, insulated tools, lockout devices and signage to warn others to avoid disaster should a circuit inadvertently remain live.

With such a wide range of equipment available, the choice of product can often be overwhelming Lockout devices play one of the most crucial roles in the safe isolation process by preventing the circuit being re-energised until after work is complete by ensuring a circuit breaker remains in a specific on or off position – an important step to ensure the safety of the workforce. There are a number of options available when it comes to lockout devices; some are universal while others are designed to fit specific brands, but by employing a variety of devices, retailers can help users to significantly reduce the risk of injury

INVESTING IN TRUSTED BRANDS

The old adage ‘the bitterness of poor quality will remain after the sweetness of low cost has been forgotten,’ has never been truer, particularly when it comes to the safe isolation of an electrical network –where inadequate tools can be unsafe and lead to disastrous consequences

Reliability is key when selecting the right tools to stock so opt for trusted brands and proven products There are several elements to consider when selecting an effective tool: the R&D process behind it;

the source of the materials; the engineering and manufacturing procedures; the quality control and accreditation Each element undergoes a constant review as new materials, manufacturing techniques, or industry requirements are uncovered, with the effectiveness, durability and safety of the products always front of mind

Kasp Lockout is a range of essential tools designed specifically to protect electricians and their colleagues from accidents at work through safe isolation

The range safeguards against a sudden release of energy, locking off energy sources using padlocks and physical security devices

EASIFIT MCB LOCKOUT

This universal mini circuit breaker isolates single, double, and triple switches. It is easy to install, using no tools, and quickly protects against dangerous energy surges while maintenance and repairs are carried out.

FUSE CONTROL

The humble electrical fuse is often the unsung hero of circuit protection. Harsha Raghaven of Lawson Fuses explains why it remains such a vital component.

In the world of electrical engineering, circuit protection is a critical aspect that ensures the safety and longevity of electrical systems. Amongst the various methods of circuit protection, fuses have stood the test of time as one of the most reliable and essential components and have continued to do so, due to the constant review of international and local standards, improved design capability and modern manufacturing techniques.

It is a testament to the longevity of a type of component initially patented in 1890, with the first British Standard getting released in 1919, and Lawson Fuses have been designing and manufacturing these fuses since 1938, with more demand for new types and higher quantities each year

Protect and connect

Circuit protection involves the implementation of devices and mechanisms designed to prevent excessive current flow, which can cause overheating, fires, and damage to electrical components The primary goal is to ensure that electrical systems operate within safe parameters, thereby protecting both the equipment and the users

As electrical circuits become ever more complex, and regulations more stringent, there are many different circuit protection devices available, including circuit breakers, surge protectors, residual current devices and fuses Each of these devices has its unique characteristics and applications, but fuses remain a fundamental component due to their simplicity, reliability, and effectiveness

The silent guardian

A fuse is a simple yet ingenious device that consists of a metal element or wire that melts when excessive current flows

through it This melting action breaks the circuit, stopping the flow of electricity and preventing damage to the system A lot of fuses are dual action, in that they will protect against low over currents but will also protect against massive currents generated by a short circuit failure. Fuses are designed to be the weakest link in an electrical circuit, ensuring that they will fail before any other component is damaged

The key advantages of fuses include:

1 Speed: Fuses are generally faster than other protection devices for short circuit protection and will operate around 2ms, which is approximately 10 times faster than other types of protection

2. Application: Whilst other protection devices are for low voltage protection only, fuses are suitable for very low and very high voltages, ranging from miniature devices for 230V up to full HV qualified fuses The breaking capacity of a fuse will generally always be much higher. Typical breaking capacities are

80kA and 120kA, as opposed to typical ratings of 15kA for other devices

3 Simplicity: Fuses are straightforward devices with no moving parts, making them easy to understand and use

4 Reliability: Fuses provide consistent and predictable protection, as they are designed to operate under specific conditions

5 Cost-Effectiveness: Fuses are generally inexpensive compared to other circuit protection devices, making them an economical choice for many applications.

For all the above reason, despite the

development of more sophisticated circuit protection devices, fuses remain indispensable Especially, like the one developed by Lawson Fuses; High Rupture Capacity (HRC) fuses are the backbone of industry protection as they offer such varied options for LV to HV, massive breaking capacities and offer protection against low current overloads and short circuit failures

There is an enormous range of sizes and fittings available so there will always be a fuse that is suitable for your application, no matter how new or old your system is Types include bolted, offset tags, slotted tags, cylindrical and square body

with a choice of size depending on your current rating requirement.

Modern alternatives and their limitations

While modern alternatives like circuit breakers and electronic protection devices offer advanced features and greater flexibility, they also come with certain limitations:

l Complexity: Circuit breakers and electronic protection devices are more complex than fuses, requiring regular maintenance and calibration to ensure proper operation

l Cost: These advanced devices are generally more expensive than fuses, which can be a significant factor in large-scale applications

l Response Time: Although circuit breakers can offer adjustable trip settings, they may not always respond as quickly as fuses in certain overcurrent conditions

Conclusion

In conclusion, fuses continue to be a vital component of circuit protection due to their simplicity, reliability, costeffectiveness, and quick response time

The various fuse standard committees are highly active, and the IEC has released updated standards for LV fuses in the last couple of months

Fire safety is critical in any electrical installation – and when it comes to cables and support equipment, it’s imperative that it comes first The risk of underspecified or incorrectly secured cables coming lose in a fire is not just a cause for concern; it poses a very real threat to life

Fire rated

The use of fire rated cables has certainly come to prominence in the UK in recent years, which can only be a good thing for everyone – from installers to end users and on to emergency service responders They can be seen in use virtually anywhere, but are most commonly installed in commercial, residential, and public spaces like universities, hospitals, and schools, where the risk of fire poses a big threat to life Their purpose is simpleto maintain critical electrical functionality during fires to enable safe evacuation.

Fire rated cables, also referred to as fire performance or fire resistant cables, are specifically engineered for deployment in environments where the cable's functionality should remain unaffected in the event of a fire Typically crafted from materials capable of withstanding high temperatures and flames, these cables boast extreme resilience, sometimes up to 1,100°C.

When installing such cables there are two key considerations:

Maximum normal operating temperature of the cable – most cables, including fire rated ones, have normal operating temperatures ranging from +70 to +90°C

Fire resistance temperature of the cable – fire rated cables undergo testing and are rated for a duration of typically 1-2

hours, withstanding temperatures of up to 1,100°C Despite potential destruction of the cable insulation during a fire, the essential conductors inside the cable (protected by a metallic layer and/or mica tape) remain intact, enabling the provision of emergency/essential power supply

Performance

Damaged cables can pose hazards, including tripping or, more critically, electrocution Therefore, comprehensive fire safety planning should integrate measures to protect firefighters from cablerelated dangers

Therefore, in scenarios where fire rated cables are in use, cable cleats play a pivotal role in providing support and securing cables during fires or short circuits Installers and specifiers must ensure that the cable cleats they select have a service temperature equal to or higher than the cable's maximum operating temperature and have been tested to safely restrain cables in extreme high temperature conditions.

The fire performance of these cable management systems needs to take into account fire survival, fire resistance, flame retardancy, flame propagation, smoke toxicity and emissions in exactly the same way the cables they are supporting do This can only be proven by thorough testing prior to bringing them to market In our case, every fire resistant cleat has undergone testing to temperatures of 1,200°C, while also enduring periodic water spray and shock testing

The British Standard BS 5839, which today governs fire detection and alarm systems in buildings, now stipulates that cable supports – including cable cleats –must endure fire, maintain circuit integrity,

endure the same temperature as the cable, and provide adequate support

This small reference to the fire resistance of cable supports in the standard has made a world of difference when it comes to addressing the safety of emergency responders, especially firefighters operating in challenging conditions

Prior to its introduction, fire rated cables didn’t need to be secured and supported by fire rated products such as cable cleats, which in one tragic case led to the death of fire fighter, Jeff Wornham in 2005 – who passed away having become entangled in cables in the lobby of a 14th floor flat in Stevenage

Products that comply with the requirements of BS 5839 go beyond their previous role in simply helping to maintain electrical functionality during fires; they now play an essential role in effectively securing fire rated cables during fires.

Performance considerations

Even for non-fire critical cable installations, where the systems will not be required to function in a fire, wiring and cables must still be adequately supported It is critical to ensure wiring does not prematurely

collapse before the public and firefighting personnel evacuate the building. Therefore, when selecting cable cleats for fire rated cable installations, the key performance considerations should be as follows:

l Cleats must safely support and restrain cables for means of escape, while maintaining circuit integrity

l Cleats must safely support and restrain cables for firefighting purposes, while maintaining circuit integrity

l Any composite materials used in manufacture are produced in Low Smoke and Fume (LSF) as standard

l Any composite materials used in manufacture are flame retardant and ideally rated V0 in accordance with UL94 as standard

l Where possible, London Underground (LUL) approved and certified polymers

are used, for some of the most stringent smoke toxicity and smoke emission requirements.

It’s also vital to understand that all typical polymeric materials will melt and burn away in a fire, which means standard liners will no longer be in position to help grip the cables during a fire Therefore, fully metallic fire-rated cable cleats will likely be the best solution.

No unnecessary risk

What it boils down to is common sense during the specification and installation process In the same way that regular electrical cables won’t continue operating during a short circuit scenario if secured by underspecified cable cleats, then fire rated cables will only perform during a fire

if they are secured using properly fire rated cable cleats

By following that simple rule, electrical supplies will continue during fire and lives of building users and emergency responders will not be put in unnecessary risk

In response to market demands, CMP recently introduced a comprehensive range of fire-rated cable cleats – Themis, Solace and Helios All three have been subjected to rigorous fire testing to comply with EN 50200, BS 5839, BS 8491, and BS 8434.

Jake Green, Head of Technical Engagement with Scolmore Group, takes a look at some of the ways to avoid undue strain on cables, as well as delving deeper into the requirements of BS7671.

Wiring systems must be selected and erected to avoid during installation, use and maintenance, damage to the sheath or insulation of cables and their terminations (522 8 1) To ensure the requirements of this regulation are met, cables not installed in conduit or trunking are typically supported using a range of clips, saddles, band, glands and ties.

REQUIREMENTS

All cables and conductors must be supported in such a way that the level of mechanical strain which naturally exists will not cause either the cable/conductor or the terminations to be compromised Furthermore, all cable supports and enclosures shall not have sharp edges liable to damage the wiring system, and cable/conductors are not to be damaged by the means of fixing It is important, therefore, that care is taken when selecting for use supports that are appropriate for the cable/conductors

TYPES OF SUPPORT

There is a wide range of options available for the contractor when selecting cable supports These include amongst other things:

SUPPORTING ROLE

l Cable ties

l Cable cleats

l Cable clips

l Cable tie accessories

l Cable glands

The type of fixing will depend on the nature of the surface to which the support is fixed For example, cable ties would be suitable for fixing cables installed on basket tray or cable tray, whereas cable clips would be suitable for wooden surfaces. Similarly, the type of support will depend on the type of cable being installed For example, cable cleats will be suitable for steel-wire armoured cables

GUIDANCE

The guidance issued within the On-Site Guide (OSG) published by the IET is helpful in deciding on the nature of cable

support and the distances recommended between clips Appendix D covers cables generally, specific applications such as caravans and the like, overhead wiring as well as conduit and trunking support

Fig 1 gives an example of the recommended distance between clips for a cable having a diameter not exceeding 9mm As the cable diameter increases the distance between clips is permitted to grow

Whilst the support distances are important, it remains the case that the

purpose of cable supports is to ensure there is no undue strain on the cable or its terminations

Similarly, when cables are bent it is important that there is no undue strain on the internal conductors caused when the bend is too tight Fig 2 shows an example of the recommended bending

radius for 1 5 mm2 insulated and sheathed ‘twin and earth’.

CABLE ENTRY

Two issues must be addressed when cables enter an accessory: the risk of damage to the sheath/insulation at the point of entry, and any potential strain on connections.

Where a cable enters a metallic accessory box having no protection from sharp edges, there is a risk that the insulation surrounding conductors may become damaged leading to arc and shock risk Where cables enter a metallic accessory box, it is important that protection is provided, such as with rubber grommets or similar

Even where cables entering an accessory box or other metallic enclosure are protected from damage, terminations

may still be impacted by strain as cables are left unsupported. In such circumstances it is necessary for suitable support to be provided and compression glands provided to ensure the electrical and mechanical strength of terminations

CONCLUSION

All cables and conductors must be suitably supported to ensure that no undue strain exists on the cable or the terminations Care should be taken to select appropriate support (clips, glands and the like) for cables and Unicrimp has a range of products to help the contractor in carrying out their duties

LIGHTING CONTROLS

SPOTLIGHT ON DALI

With the market for smart lighting and connected controls projected to continue to grow for the foreseeable future, Mike Collins, Managing Director at Ovia – part of the Scolmore Group of companies – answers some questions on the DALI protocol, described as the largest wired digital open protocol in the world for lighting.

Originating in the late 1990s DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a bidirectional communications protocol that is used to provide control over, and communication between, the components in a lighting system

Key features of DALI:

l It is an open protocol – any manufacturer can use it

l With DALI-2 interoperability between manufacturers is guaranteed by mandatory certification procedures

l Installation is simple Power and control lines can be laid together and no shielding is required

l The wiring topology can be in the form of a star (hub & spoke), a tree or a line, or any combination of these

l Communication is digital, not analogue, so the exact same dimming values can be received by multiple devices resulting in very stable and precise dimming performance

l A l l d e v

How does DALI compare with 1-10V?

DALI, like 1-10V, was designed for and by the lighting industry Lighting control components, such as LED drivers and sensors, are available from a range of manufacturers that have DALI and 1-10V interfaces However, that’s where the similarity ends

The main differences between DALI and 1-10V are:

Bus power supply unit (PSU). This component is always required It maintains the bus voltage at the required level

Led Fittings. All light fittings in a DALI installation require a DALI driver A DALI driver can accept DALI commands directly from the DALI bus and respond accordingly. The drivers can be DALI or DALI-2 devices, but if they are not DALI-2 they will not have any of the new features introduced with this latest version, such as querying control gear failure, resending failed commands, or identifying devices

Input devices – sensors, switches etc

These communicate with the application controller using 24-bit data frames They do not communicate directly with the control devices (DALI 2 only)

Instances. Often, a DALI device such as a sensor will offer several different instructions to the DALI system For example, sensors often include a movement detector (PIR), a light-level detector and an infrared receiver These are called instances – the single device has three instances. With DALI-2 each

instance can belong to a different control group, and each can be addressed to control different lighting groups giving great flexibility.

NITTAN FIRE DETECTION RANGE

Nittan has announced several exciting developments to its Evolution analogue addressable range, including the launch of new detectors with integral Short Circuit Isolator (SCI), and upgrades to existing devices

New to the Evolution range are the EV-PY-SCI Photoelectric Optical Detector with SCI, the EV-H2-SCI Heat Detector with SCI and the EVPYH-SCI Photoelectric Optical & Heat Multi-Sensor with SCI Both the EV-H2-SCI and the EV-PYH-SCI offer EN 54:5 Heat Category P programmable to four settings (A1R, A2S, BS & CS), with the latter having an additional setting for combined smoke heat mode certified to EN 54 part 29 for Multisensors

The integral SCI in the new Evolution devices is bi-directional and, in the event of an external fault, will shut down on one side to protect the system, whilst allowing the device to continue communication with the fire alarm control panel from the opposite side The isolator has a very low internal resistance (Zcmax) of less than 50mΩ and will self-reset when the fault is cleared

The new devices also benefit from Nittan’s advanced PY smoke sensing chamber and microprocessor control for maximum effectiveness A spherical feature incorporated within the chamber provides superior light scattering, plus an orange LED is used which significantly improves response across the fire spectrum The shape of the ‘PY’ smoke chamber is optimised to minimise the effect of dirt/dust contamination, plus a fine stainless steel micromesh prevents the ingress of even the smallest insects which can create false alarms

COURSE OF ACTION

PEW hears how a Southsea based mini golf course has been re-energised after the installation of Integral LED neon strip lighting.

Tg

Prior to the installation of strip lights, The Putt Hutt featured a typical indoor mini golf setup with a basic lighting scheme that lacked any thematic or ambient lighting, resulting in a straightforward and utilitarian appearance This setting limited the visual and experiential appeal of the course, particularly during evening hours.

The project brief was aimed at significantly enhancing the visual appeal of The Putt Hutt's course The goal was to transform the space into a visually captivating setting that would draw players in and create a memorable experience, whilst being easy to maintain

By introducing a new lighting scheme which provided plenty of vibrant and cheerful ambient light, the project also sought to extend playable hours whilst ensuring the safety and navigability of players.

Challenges

l The type of strip lighting chosen needed to be flexible, capable of being implemented into the existing course without significant works or modifications and able to adapt to the curves of the course. Wiring needed to be hidden out of the way to avoid safety hazards

l The strip lighting needed to be hard wearing, able to withstand being struck by golf balls and potentially golf clubs

l Maintaining a balance between aesthetic enhancements and functional playability would be crucial, ensuring that the lights enhance rather than

distract from the gameplay Careful selection and placement of luminaires was required to achieve the desired visual effects without causing glare or shadows that could negatively affect the playing experience

l The control system needed to be manageable by any staff memberuncomplicated and easy to understand Whilst training could be provided, it was essential that day to day running and creation of scenes would not require a specialist to commission

Luminaires

Installer Anytronics chose to utilise Integral LED's Neon Flex Bendable Strip with Top Bend to achieve the look they required They installed this alongside their own lighting control systems. The Neon Flex

Bendable Strip offers high quality seamless and dot-free light output, with IP67 ingress protection helping ensure that the lighting stays dust-free for easier cleaning and maintenance in awkward corners The silicone extrusion provided the flexibility required to work with the curves of the course meaning less cutting and connections during installation Installer Anytronics said: “The end result was absolutely loved After only seeing a five metre section in one area, they couldn’t have imagined it would look this good. The tape provided a perfectly homogenous display with cascading colours that were incredibly smooth ”

Earlier this year, Carrier UK officially opened a new training academy at its service and rentals depot in Bracknell. The new state-of-the-art facility reinforces Carrier's dedication to training and inspiring the next generation of engineers and technicians while helping to address the skills gap in the HVAC sector. Carrier’s Managing Director for the UK and Nordics, Andrew Paddock, explains more.

It’s an exciting time for us at Carrier

Opening our new training academy marks a significant milestone and is a testament to our commitment to building a skilled workforce capable of leading the way in intelligent climate and energy solutions

The new training academy, based at our site in Bracknell, will provide trainee engineers and technicians with hands-on experience with our commercial product portfolio, which includes heat pumps, chillers, and air handling units

Building

a skilled workforce

The purpose of our academy is to look at the skills our engineers need now and for the future. Without new talent and

continual skill enhancement, it will be difficult to fully embrace the electrification of heating systems and meet Net Zero targets

At Carrier, we have adopted a total ‘lifecycle asset management’ approach to service and maintenance So, to enhance the learning and understanding of our trainees and engineers, they will also gain skills in service repairs and upgrades, such as VFD (Variable Frequency Drives), refrigerant, compressor overhauls and controls, as well as modernisation and preventative and predictive maintenance.

Having expertly trained technicians gives our customers a high degree of confidence in our abilities to install,

maintain and manage the lifecycle of their equipment to the highest level.

Practice

makes perfect

During the grand opening of our facility, our guests were able to tour the new space and see learning come to life with equipment demonstrations from our Technical Manager, Phil Treacher

Currently in the training academy, we have a centrifugal compressor, which gives technicians the chance to take them apart and rebuild safely and accurately We have VFDs and air-handling units which we can use to fault find, maintain and service There are also several simulators we can plug in and train technicians and engineers on how chillers work and simulate breakdowns

The beauty of the academy is that we can constantly bring in new equipment and continuously upskill our staff in a safe environment where they can practise with no pressure Then when they’re out in the field, they can confidently provide our customers with the best possible service

Celebrating Carrier’s apprentices

The opening of our new facility was also about celebrating some of our brightest young talent In attendance we had several of our graduating apprentices who have progressed through the Carrier apprenticeship programme.

Shortly after the presentations and congratulations, it was a pleasure to outline our plans to actively grow our programme and introduce our new dedicated apprenticeship programme leader, Adele Watson

It’s been widely documented that the skills gap in our industry is growing, and that the HVAC sector is at risk of losing a wealth of knowledge when all of the experienced technicians retire That’s why it is crucial that we invest in training new talent Over the coming months, we plan to recruit and welcome 20 new apprentices into the business

At Carrier, we’re committed to helping young people master skills for the future so we can achieve sustainability and decarbonisation goals Our new training academy and the wealth of HVAC experts we already have in the business, many of whom started their Carrier careers as apprentices, will be able to enrich our apprentices’ learning Our

engineers’ years of experience will be beneficial in helping our apprentices fill the HVAC-specific areas they do not cover at college

Vision for the future

We also have exciting plans to scale up our new academy. We have training programmes focused on educating our engineers about the safe adoption and handling of new refrigerants, including R290, while inviting our customers and contract partners to experience exclusive training days with us here in Bracknell

Another opportunity is to explore how we can offer existing

engineers, not just from the HVAC world but other related sectors, specific training about our equipment so they have all the tools they need to be successful with Carrier Plus, we’re looking forward to utilising our new facilities to deliver our CIBSE-approved CPD training courses to support consultants, installers and end-users who wish to update their knowledge on key technical and legislative topics
