ften, as a wholesaler, you need to be all things to all people – a Mechanical Engineer, a data cable expert, an LED lighting Professor, and you need to be clued up in a number of other niche industries to boot. Sometimes, even an agony aunt to your nearest and dearest customers: “Oh yeah, they did what? They asked for that there! A weak tea with only digestive biscuits – how will you go on?!” With so much going on in a fast-paced industry, it can be difficult to pinpoint the moment when you as a wholesaler can pick up on a trend or capitalise on a proactive government decision that benefits the industry. However, with the current state the country is in, it can be hard to remember a time when the government made a decisive move that benefitted anyone or anything, I’m sure you’ll agree! Anyway, I digress; my point is that there are plenty of things happening right now that have the potential to boost your sales in the next few weeks, months and years. What I want to focus on in this rant/viewpoint is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Wellbeing of people within buildings is a hot topic and there are a number of different elements that affect an individual’s wellbeing within that building. Odour sensing technology, intelligent humidistats and light sensor controls are just the tip of the iceberg with this technology. It can be easy to look past what is really affecting people and just focus on the numbers, but with research from the British Lung Foundation showing a link between poor indoor air quality and cancer, selling an item that not only has some great selling points, but could impact on people’s lives, is surely worth a look.

FIREANGEL SECURES NORTH VIEW HOUSING ASSOCIATION CONTRACT TRAINING PROVIDER EXPANDS Access Training has added to its training team with the appointment of a Senior Trainer and Industry Expert in response to the increasing demand for fire, security and emergency systems apprenticeships in the region. Access Training currently has 50 apprentices on the Fire, Security and Emergency Systems Apprenticeship, working toward their professional qualification whilst gaining paid work experience as young Engineers and Technicians at firms from across the North East. Engineer Dave Cash brings with him 30 years’ experience working within the security and alarms sector with employers including ADT Fire and Security.

FireAngel, one of Europe’s leading smoke, heat and carbon monoxide suppliers, has announced a new partnership with North View Housing Association to provide its wireless interlinked battery-powered smoke and heat alarms to 700 properties across Glasgow. The contract has been secured following the Scottish government’s changes to the Housing (Scotland) Act, which now requires an LD2 Specification. FireAngel’s battery smoke and heat alarms, the SM-SN-1 and HM-SN-1, have been specified to support North View Housing Association in achieving constant compliance across its entire property portfolio. The legislative changes require all Scottish homes to have sealed, long-life battery or mains-wired interlinked alarms

installed, with one functioning smoke alarm in the room that is most frequently used by the occupants in the daytime. A battery-operated carbon monoxide alarm is also required to be fitted in each room with a carbon-fuelled appliance or flue. The regulations also require one functioning smoke alarm to be installed in every circulation space on every floor, such as hallways and landings, and one heat alarm in every kitchen. The mains-powered alarms must also be interlinked under the new requirements to provide sufficient audibility. Installation of the alarms is already underway across North View Housing Association’s 700 refurbished and new build homes.

LEVC PARTNERS EO CHARGING IN SCOTLAND EO Charging, one of the UK’s leading electric vehicle (EV) charger manufacturers, has been selected as The London EV Company’s (LEVC) official charging partner in Scotland. EO will support the makers of the new electric London taxi with the supply and installation of Smart Home Chargepoints across Scotland. LEVC owners will be offered an EO Mini Pro, the world’s

smallest smart electric vehicle charger, as part of an exclusive deal signed between the two companies. Designed and manufactured in the UK, the EO Mini Pro is OLEV approved – allowing electric taxi drivers to claim the UK government funded ‘Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme’.


CONTINUED MARKET GROWTH

M&E CONTRACTING MARKET GROWS 20% According to the latest mechanical and electrical (M&E) contracting market report from AMA Research, the market has seen growth of 20% since 2014. The market entered a period of sustained growth in 2013 driven by a buoyant new build market. This growth continued up to 2017, but the market stagnated in 2018 at around £19.5m, as public sector output, apart from infrastructure, declined, especially in healthcare and education. Output in the commercial office sector also fell as a result of weak business confidence. Uncertainty over the outcome of the Brexit process and its impact on the UK economy is a major factor negatively impacting market growth, especially in the commercial non-residential sector, whilst

the public sector also faces constraints in public spending and uncertainty over the sources of funding for capital projects since the termination of PFI. Factors supporting market growth include the introduction of new technologies and products, particularly in the area of energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, driven by changing legislation and greater awareness of the issue. There has been a rapid expansion in

the range of LED lighting and increasingly sophisticated building control systems for heating, lighting, and energy management. Other factors stimulating growth are the continued strength in data centre construction and greater levels of outsourcing of M&E services, either singly or as part of wider, multi-service FM contracts. The future prospects for M&E contracting in the UK is heavily dependent on the performance of the non-residential construction industry. The outlook for non-residential construction output is for stable growth per annum to 2023. As a result, it is estimated that the M&E contracting market will achieve modest annual growth over the next five years.

VULNERABLE RESIDENTS ‘AT RISK’ ECA has responded to Government consultation following the Hackitt Report on building fire safety. The safety of hospital patients, those in care and the residents of high-rise buildings could still be at risk if those who work in higher-risk premises lack the necessary experience-based qualifications and competency, says ECA. In its response to the government’s ‘Building A Safer Future’ consultation, trade body ECA has broadly agreed with the proposal for an ‘overarching competence framework’ for those who work on and in higher risk buildings.

However, the trade body also said this new framework must reinforce and extend experienced-based qualifications. Without doing so, ECA argues that electrical and other installations in higher risk residential buildings could pose an unacceptable risk of electrocution and fire. In its response, ECA underlined that for a competence-based qualification system to ensure safety and quality in the higher risk premises, all workers should undertake a suitable apprenticeship as a minimum. Alternative, comparable qualification routes should also be provided for existing, experienced workers.

ECA Technical Director, Mike Smith, comments: “ECA fully supports moves to ensure that those who work in higher risk premises are suitably competent to do so, notably in the electrical and wider engineering services workforce. “However, regulated competence-based qualifications, including apprenticeships, are fundamental to ensuring that installation and maintenance work delivers fire and electrical safety. Without this essential foundation, the residents of high-rise buildings and hospitals will remain at risk.”

EDA APPRENTICE MILESTONE

2000TH EDA APPRENTICE 19 year-old Jonathan McArdle is the 2000th apprentice to join the UK’s electro-technical sector through EDA Apprenticeship Plus, the organisation behind the apprenticeship service for members and affiliates of the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA). Jonathan is combining on-the-job training at Edmundson Electrical’s Middlesbrough branch, with studies on the Trade Supplier Level 2 apprenticeship standard, created by wholesalers for wholesalers, in an initiative led by the Electrical Distributors’ Association. Profit Centre Manager, Dan Harper, explains why the service offered by EDA Apprenticeships Plus is so impressive: “The excellent quality of candidates who came to interview meant that I decided to take on two apprentices, with Chloe Warpole, aged

21, joining us too, and both are a fantastic addition to the team. “Apprenticeships are a terrific way to nurture new talent in the sector and I’ve used the service offered through our trade association, the EDA, for a number of years. What Jonathan and Chloe are currently missing in product knowledge is made up to us through their effort and attitude to work. They are always polite and well-presented and the customers, as well as the rest of the team, have really taken to them. “As part of their studies, Jonathan and Chloe are also currently studying one of the modules in the EDA Product Knowledge Programme, giving them more confidence when serving customers. I see great futures ahead for them both if they continue to apply themselves in the manner that they are currently showing us.”

REXEL ENTERPRISE CHALLENGE Youngsters put their marketing skills and imaginations to the test when they were visited for a Dragon’s Den-style learning session by Rexel. The event, which was set up by Everton Football Club's official charity as part of its ‘All About Enterprise’ scheme, saw children from five schools create a product that could solve a classroom problem and pitch the idea to a panel of judges, including the Head of Branch Marketing at Rexel. Titled the Enterprise Challenge, schools across Everton were invited to compete in the challenge. Their task was to come up with a variety of creative and innovative ideas that were then judged by representatives from Rexel, Spie and Everton Football Club. The winner presented their product and business plan for a refillable pen and ink dispenser, which wowed judges as something that supported the environment, was a realistic possibility in the classroom and was cost saving. Kate Adamcyzk, Head of Branch Marketing at Rexel, comments: “We really enjoy working with Everton Football Club

as they create these fun activities for young people, who may otherwise not be exposed to the world of marketing and business at their age. “This challenge was particularly fun as we really got to see some creative ideas from the children. Our favourite one was the refillable pen for so many reasons. The team also presented really well and had a great plan on how to make this great an idea a real success.” The ‘All About Enterprise’ scheme is a pilot that the Premier League team set up to support local primary school children by introducing them to new skills and opportunities in future life. The programme discusses topics that are not on the national curriculum such as technology, customer service, budgeting and finance, advertising and marketing, and manufacturing. The aim of the Everton in the Community programme is to engage and empower pupils whose strengths may not lie in the standard curriculum and provide a change for them to experience new things and open up employment opportunities in the future.



It’s been a busy few months in the electrical industry, with new appointments and shake-ups across different sectors. Keep up to date with the latest movements here, as we detail who has gone where. Jim Hutchison Scolmore Jim Hutchison has been appointed to the position of Commercial Manager at Scolmore. Having spent his whole career in the industry, amassing more than 30 years’ experience along the way, Jim joins the company from his most recent role as National Sales Manager with Electrium. He brings to the business a wealth of knowledge and expertise, garnered during his time working primarily within customer facing roles, across a broad spectrum of well-known businesses and predominantly premium brands. He began his career straight from school when he joined WJ Furse, the Nottingham-based company specialising in earthing and lightning protection products. This early experience will stand him in good stead as his remit with Scolmore will incorporate the Unicrimp brand of earthing rods. Having worked his way up through various UK and export sales roles, he then joined Philips Lighting where he spent five years working closely with large national wholesaler and distributor customers. This was followed by a nine year stint as head of sales for MK, which in turn led him to a five year period with Electrium, which included time spent as Sales Manager for both the Wylex and Crabtree brands.

John O’Neill NICEIC & ELECSA John O’Neill has been appointed Director of Technical Excellence at Certsure (NICEIC & ELECSA). A well-known and much respected figure in the industry, John has almost 50 years’ experience in the sector. He started his career as an apprentice at Vauxhall Motors in Luton before working as a Maintenance Supervisor for General Motors in Canada and the USA. He returned to the UK to set up his own electrical contracting business specialising in electrical work and integrated control systems. He joined NICEIC in 2010 and has filled a number of technical positions including Area Engineer, Customer Relations Engineer and more latterly the Technical Helpline Manager. John comments: “I am delighted to take up this role at such a highly regarded organisation in the industry. “My time spent as an Area Engineer gave me a great insight into the challenges contractors face on a daily basis and the many different environments they work in.”

ENTERING A NEW PHASE Q

Give us a brief history of your career in wholesaling and how long have you been at Phase Electrical?

A. I began my career in the industry over 30 years ago when I joined a national wholesaler. I started on the trade counter and over the years have gained the knowledge and expertise to advance to the Management team at various locations. In 2001 I was fortunate enough to move to north America with my family and continued my career with the same national wholesaler. Whilst there we laid the foundations for multiple branches in New England and I gained valuable experience. I returned to England in July 2010 and joined Phase Electrical Distributors,

PEW recently took a trip down to sunny Brighton to meet with Phase Electrical Branch Manager, Gary Wordsworth, to discuss how the company is drumming up business, how it stands out from the crowd and why the family feel benefits its customers. utilising my experience we launched a new branch in Brighton which has continued to grow from its opening in 2011. Eight years later we have built an excellent team and look forward to continuing to serve Brighton and its surrounding areas in the years to come.

Q

You have included some ‘nontraditional’ items in your stock including games and BBQs, what was the thinking behind this? A. Whilst we are proud of our traditional roots as a company, we believe that part of providing an exceptional service to our customers is the product ranges we can offer. Our new range from our catalogue ‘The Great Outdoors’ was born from this belief and has been received with positive feedback from our branch teams

and customers alike. As an electrical wholesaler, our customers come to us for the products they expect us to stock and the continued popularity of the brochure proves they enjoy the extras!

Q

With the rise of smart technology, what products do you see customers asking for the most and how much of that comes from their customer? A. We have seen an increase in enquiries for a wide range of smart home products. Smart heating controls such as the Nest Thermostat are a popular choice, as are app controlled heaters like the Rointe D Series. Rising energy costs seem to be a motivation for customers and their clients to be more mindful of energy consumption. We have also seen an increased interest in smart lighting. This can be for security purposes or even the convenience

of being able to control your home lighting whilst away through an app, much like you can do with the Ansell Octo. We ensure our teams are up-to-date on the latest smart technology as it hits the market, so that we can advise our customers on the best product for the desired application. Whilst the end users may do their research, we endeavour to provide a service that encompasses product knowledge, customer service and value for money through our trade counters.

Q

How does Phase Electrical stand out from other competitors in the surrounding areas? A. Our dedicated employees at the heart of what we do, delivering exceptional customer service and extensive product knowledge. Our first branch opened back in 2002 with a team of three and the belief that we could offer a local service on a national scale, whilst still retaining the feel

How successful have the recent marketing campaigns been, including social media etc.? And how important is social media in the market today? A. We have our own in-house marketing team, who focus solely on our print, digital and social media marketing. Social media is imperative for every business, no matter its size. It’s a way for customers (and potential customers) to reach out directly and quickly, whilst feeling that their voice is heard. It’s a two-way communication channel with infinite reach, if used to its full potential. Our marketing team believe that the importance of social media marketing shouldn’t be underestimated and as a business, it is vital to move forward as methods evolve so that we aren’t left behind.

Do you find POS material a help or a hindrance with a relatively small shop? A. POS material is always a helpful tool, for both our trade counter teams and the customers. All areas are adaptable, no matter how small they may be and we find POS from both our suppliers and our own marketing team a great way to interact with our customers regarding the product.

A

recent report by Powertools2U claimed that a van has its tools stolen every 23 minutes in the UK, with an average of 62 thefts per day. Worrying figures indeed for tradespeople and wholesalers – their van is their workhorse and helps offer an edge over the local competition. Many victims of van crime are unable to work for days and lose hundreds, if not thousands of pounds in earnings. On top of this they may have to pay for repairs to their van, if they still have it, and for replacement tools or all important stock. Statistics to make you think: Research throws up alarming statistics: it can take as little as 10 seconds for a thief to break into a vehicle; over half of all tradespeople have been a victim of van crime at least once and the average value of van theft is over £1,500.

Van crime and tool theft in the UK is increasing. Figures published by the BBC say that van crime rose from 14,063 incidents in 2014/15 to 22,749 in 2016/17. Anchor Vans offers advice on what can be done to protect your van. How do thieves get in? Skeleton keys and the ‘peel and steal’ method are the most popular methods of unauthorised entry. Skeleton keys, which should be restricted to registered locksmiths, are, frighteningly, available online for just £20, and give thieves easy access to many vehicles. Peel and steal is simply a matter of brute force. The thief leans against the vehicle’s

door and uses their bodyweight to ‘peel’ the door away from its frame, as if opening a tin. There is also a rise in high-tech crime and with keyless entry reaching the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market, theft relating to keyless entry is on the increase. What are automotive manufacturers doing to help? From looking at the stats, it is not immediately clear what manufacturers are doing to increase vehicle security. However, the truth is that security has never been better. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says: “New cars have never been more secure and the latest technology has helped bring down theft dramatically. Manufacturers invest billions to stay one step ahead of the criminals and the latest models feature sophisticated immobilisers, tracking devices and encrypted key codes to prevent cloning.” What security features should you consider when purchasing a van? Most modern vehicles offer excellent security features, but it can be easy to skip security with so many other features to select and a budget to stick to. This can be a big mistake. Deterring thieves in the first place is crucial. Give priority to considering security features when making a new purchase, or kitting out an existing vehicle:

What else can you do to minimise the risk of van crime? Minimising risk is often a matter of common sense. However, common sense measures can be time consuming and are not always possible, and let’s not forget that if

belongings are removed from the van, don’t leave anything visible If possible, store tools away from the van at night and ensure that a ‘No tools left in this van overnight’ sticker is clearly displayed Make sure the van is locked and all windows firmly closed Keep all documents relating to the van ownership in your home or office, not in the vehicle When attended, even if for a very short time, remove the keys Park the van in well-lit areas, ideally where it is covered by CCTV

With van crime offenders often given disappointingly low fines for such costly criminal behaviour, there is currently a petition running asking the government to investigate what more can be done to tackle van and van tool theft. Thus far the petition has reached over 39,000 signatures, with an initial response from the government given back in November 2018 stating their position and outlining their work with the police and other relevant parties in a bid to reduce such crimes. It may not achieve enough signatures to be debated in Parliament but the petition has brought more attention to the problem. PEW spoke with Managing Director, David Morrow, to see what he has planned for the future.

How did you get into the industry and your current position?

A. You could say that Unitrunk is in my blood and always has been. The company was established as a family business before I was born and I have grown up with it, so while I was never under any obligation to make it my career, it was a natural step for me to get involved with the company. Being born into a successful family business is a privilege but one that comes with significant responsibilities, because I had to ensure that I knew the business inside out from the ground up. I have been actively involved now for more than 20 years and worked in a number of roles, including design, sales and production. That variety means that I know the pressures different parts of the business face and the challenges of roles across the company.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

A. The electrical supply chain market is very price-driven and cable management is often seen as a commodity item, with contractors making purchasing decisions based on making small cost savings here and there, without always considering the bigger picture. We could choose to get involved in that race to the bottom in order to increase volumes, but doing that would let our customers down and compromise the quality assurance and design values of our products. Instead, we’ve chosen to drive innovation in the cable management sector

with our RIS (Rapid Installation Systems) approach to designing products that offer a robust installation with reduced installation times, helping contractors complete within programme and minimise labour costs.

Q

How do you feel the industry has changed over recent years?

A. I think the sector has always been characterised by price competitiveness and short lead times, but both these trends have become more acute recently, with contractors under pressure to minimise budgets and turn projects around quicker. The goal is to achieve both those objectives without compromising on quality and Unitrunk’s product development, operational and commercial models have all been designed to ensure we support faster and more cost-effective, high quality installations.

A VAN WITH A PLAN For the majority of van owners, a commercial vehicle is key to trade and having it off the road takes its toll on business. With that in mind, vehicle finance lender, Moneybarn, has put together seven important maintenance checks you can carry out to keep your van on the road.

í˘ą TIDY TYRES LCV tyres, like car tyres, must have a minimum 1.6mm of tread. Bald tyres not only increase the likelihood of an accident due to fewer grips, but could also keep you off the road while you find a spare. Tyres must be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification for the weight of the load, so refer to your handbook to find the right pressure for your van. Under-inflated tyres generate more heat from friction, causing more wear and tear to the tyres and impacting fuel consumption. Similarly, over-inflated tyres cause premature wear on the centre of the tyre.

í˘˛ UNDER THE BONNET

Before you open the bonnet, check underneath your van for any leaks. Under the bonnet, check the oil, water/coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid and windscreen washer fluid. Perform these checks weekly and before any long journey. After the fluids, take a look at the battery. Check the condition of the terminals and cables for any signs of cracking, breaking or built-up residue. If you notice any of these, book your van in with a mechanic as soon as possible.

í˘ł DOOR CHECK A van is broken into every 23 minutes in the UK, so it’s crucial your doors lock and close properly. Van doors are subject to wear and tear every day, being pulled open and slammed shut multiple times at each job. During a routine walk around, you should check all doors can be opened and closed properly and with ease. Test the rear doors by opening them fully and if your van has a side door, check it stays on its runners when it opens and closes.

í˘´ LIGHT IT UP It’s a legal requirement to have all lights on your van working properly. Routinely walk around your van and test they’re all working. For your brake lights, you’ll need another person to help you. If you notice a light isn’t working correctly, you’ll need to replace the bulb. However, if this doesn’t work, it could be a wiring issue – in which case, you’ll need to take the vehicle to a garage to fix the problem.

LCV owners should also make sure lights are clean, as dirty lights or those with reduced visibility can impact your driving and that of those around you.

STAY VISIBLE It’s recommended you wash your van at least once a month to avoid any permanent damage or staining to the paintwork. Keeping it clean will also reduce the likelihood of rust appearing. Although it won’t help your van’s performance, having a clean exterior also provides the professional image you want to project to customers.

í˘ˇ WEIGHT LIMIT Windscreen wipers must be able to clear the windscreen effectively. If they leave streaks or squeak when passing over the windscreen, it means they’ve become worn and need to be replaced. You should also check for any chips or cracks in the

BACKING FOR THE FUTURE CP Electronics has helped Aurora set a new standard for sustainable development in a new future-proof building in Bristol.

W

ith products and support from CP Electronics, Aurora has become the first building outside London to achieve an outstanding rating from BREEAM. Also designed to LEED Gold Standard, the automated control and energy efficiency provided by the lighting has been a key factor in gaining this recognition. Situated in central Bristol on the Finzels Reach development, Aurora is a 95,531 sq. ft office building constructed predominantly of glass. Meeting the brief With a brief to meet high energy standards and future-proof the building – including audio-visual integration – Mechanical and Electrical contractor, CMB Engineering, turned to CP Electronics for specialist support in design, specification and installation. James Wallace, Area Sales Manager at CP Electronics, comments: “The variety of space involved quite a bit of planning, as well as a wide range of technologies to make the project work. To ensure this flexibility, we put CP’s Vitesse Plus 7 system at the heart of the solution.” Vitesse versatility Vitesse Plus 7 is a versatile, seven-channel system that’s ideally suited for commercial spaces where control, cost and convenience are key requirements. With an integrated PCB computer, the standalone lighting control module (LCM) is designed for simple plug-and-play installation and is easy to commission.

Combined with PIR detectors, each Vitesse Plus 7 module typically controls between six and nine luminaires within the office areas to provide maximum efficiency by ensuring lights only come on when a workstation is in use. To further reduce energy usage, the detectors also contain graduated daylight dimming technology, and will dim the two rows of lights nearest the windows when enough natural daylight is present. A complete solution A wide range of additional CP Electronics products helped deliver the complete solution. In smaller spaces such as toilets and storerooms, CP’s Vitesse Modular LCMs and PIR detectors are used to provide switching on and off to the lights, with set timeout periods. Switchtec, recognising the need for efficiency and increased productivity, launched a new e-commerce website using eShop, and overhauled its business processes by implementing an integrated CRM, accounts and purchasing software, called prof.ITplus. Implementing an e-commerce website was a major step in expansion for Switchtec, and after seeing strong sales from the company’s eBay account, Switchtec Managing Director, Jeremy Lester, says: “We haven’t looked back. We’re not setting the world on fire but it’s a part of the business we couldn’t be without. We have a minimum order value over the phone of £25, so we often have smaller orders going through the site because there isn’t that restriction. This is because the order is automatically processed, and a picking list is simply delivered to the warehouse team which cuts out the administration work.”

The e-commerce website has also enabled the company to improve customer service: “If we have a customer on the phone that is unsure of the exact product they’re trying to order, we direct them to a product page on the website, which has the relevant datasheet attached, and ask ‘Is this what you’re looking for?’ This gives the customer peace of mind that they’ve ordered the correct item, which in turn reduces returns and extra administration”, continues Jeremy. How it’s done eShop e-commerce platform and prof.ITplus, an ERP (enterprise resource planning) software are developed by Kidderminster’s OGL Computer and have made Switchtec more efficient in many areas of the business including purchasing. Jeremy explains the company decided to move to the new system: “We used to print and manually go through all purchase orders line by line. It was a full-time job because it was so labour intensive. But now, with prof.ITplus, we have streamlined the process, automated a lot and the role is now part-time.” Ultimately, stock is at the heart of Switchtec’s success. To expand its portfolio and grow in the UK, the company now has an ERP software that connects all business processes and allows them to run efficiently. Jeremy adds: “For us as a distributor, stock is everything and the stock management module is great. The way you can extract information to run stock reports is probably my favourite feature. The stock module handles perpetual stock checks, reports, despatching and more, so the system is perfect for distributors as a whole.” Nick Davies, Head of Software Development at OGL Computer, comments: “Increasingly, more purchases are made online, so an e-commerce website linked directly to the warehouse has given Switchtec a new sales channel and increased sales. HELPING HAND Most electricians will know that their hands are the most important tools on the job. Good skin care is therefore crucial to ensure that they are kept in good nick, and this Global Handwashing Day, the experts at Swarfega are encouraging wholesalers to promote this to their customers.

ounded by the Global Handwashing Partnership, this day is marked annually on 15th October, to help raise awareness of good handwashing and hygiene. But not only this, effective and thorough handwashing is vital when it comes to the prevention of occupational skin disorders (OSDs) – a skin care issue that is prevalent among electricians.

Occupational Skin Disorders OSDs affect a huge number of people who work with their hands; around 40% of workers will be affected at some point in their career. They’re a lot more common than you may think. Dry, cracked and sore skin isn’t something to grin and bear – it can lead to seriously unpleasant skin disorders such as eczema or dermatitis. One of the reasons OSDs are particularly prevalent among electricians is contact with contaminants on the job. TIME IS MONEY As a wholesaler, earning a customer’s trust and loyalty relies on being able to really get into their world, find out what’s important to them and find the places where you can add value. Often this comes down to delivering the basics of helping them to save money, time or both.

T

o do this well, it’s vital to have a good understanding of both the type of work your customers undertake, and to be up to speed on any new product developments that can offer the contractor a time or money saving solution. COUNTER VIEW Are your counter staff up to speed on PIR specs so they can advise customers and avoid returns? It’s always good practice, when asked for a PIR detector, for them to ask a few key questions to help customers make the right choices. 1 I WHAT TYPE OF LIGHTS AND WHAT LOAD?

2 I WILL THERE BE LOTS OF LUMINARIES?

These days, the job will almost always be LED lighting, so make sure they know to pick a PIR detector that is specifically tested with, and rated for, LED loads. You shouldn’t need to do the maths yourself: the specification on the box should already state what LED loading is acceptable – if not steer clear. We think it’s always wise to add at least 10% for good measure. The huge difference between ratings for the same PIR detector for halogen and LED still comes as quite a surprise to some people. For instance, our new mini linkable PIR, is rated for 1000W max. halogen and 250W max. LED. That’s because the LED rating allows for the strong inrush current on switching, not the low running current.

Controlling several luminaires, with a total LED load getting near the limit of the PIR’s specification, needs careful thought. For instance, our redesigned Timeguard SLW360˚ ceiling-mounted and flush-mounted detectors have a maximum LED load of 150W, but it is ‘only’ rated for a maximum of 10 separate LED 10W lamps (100W). Yet the company are happy to rate, and guarantee it, for five sets of LED lamps above 10W, right up to the 150W limit. This is because, due to their physical size lower wattage, LED lamps (GU10 type lamps) commonly have very simple circuitry with surge protection and power factor correction ommitted, this puts a massive strain on whatever is switching/controlling them.

Surface mounted can still look sleek

Looking for a big rating might also mean that a big area is to be lit. So perhaps a single PIR detector will not be able to give the comprehensive detection field needed. Would multiple PIRs be better? Or maybe it would be easier, and less expensive, to be able to link a master and several slaves together? The ingenious Timeguard linkable concept makes wiring simple because up to five slaves are linked by pre-fitted, plug-in wires that stay hidden behind a suspended ceiling. PIRs should be good, easy business – all the more so if you can avoid wrong choices at the counter.

TESTING TIMES Neil Baldwin, Managing Director at ESP, looks at the self-test area of the emergency lighting sector, how it can save building owners time and money and why wholesalers should be stocking these products.

E

mergency lighting is a legal requirement in almost every building, with one simple, lifesaving task: to provide light if a power outage shuts down a building’s standard operational lighting. It is the responsibility of building owners and responsible persons to prove that the emergency lighting systems they are responsible for are working correctly and are regularly maintained so that they are in full working order. All emergency lighting installations must have routine tests carried out, with each system luminaire the subject of daily, monthly and annual testing. These tests should all be documented with the results including maintenance and rectification results all held on file.

Manual vs self-test Whilst the testing of emergency lighting does not take much effort and isn’t difficult, manually inspecting every single lighting luminaire for lamp starting, operation and duration performance can be can be a very labour intensive, and therefore expensive, task. However, with the latest improvements in technology, routine testing can be simple, automatic and

therefore much less expensive. It is now possible for building owners to take advantage of emergency lighting equipment that ‘self-tests’ in accordance with the relevant standards. Installing self-test emergency lighting units can reduce the burden of testing emergency lighting installations, as they perform all mandatory testing automatically, removing the need for manual testing to be carried out by the

Whilst the initial costs for the products may be higher, overall they will provide a very short payback period – making them an ideal option that should be given consideration at the beginning of any project. The benefits of self-test emergency light units include ease of installation, with no need for key switches – data cables for example. Convenience is also a major plus, with mandatory tests carried out without disruption to the normal use of the

building, and any faults identified. The self-test units identify faults in luminaires and any faults are then highlighted to maintenance personnel, saving them the time and effort it would take to search the building in question for faults. How does self-test work? Self-test units use an accurate internal clock programmed to interrupt the permanent mains supply at set intervals, initiating emergency lighting tests. Short duration weekly and monthly tests and annual full duration tests are automatically activated with the results shown via an LED indicator on the light. The responsible person only needs to check the indicator and it means that only lights with reported faults will need to be attended to by maintenance personnel. During initial power up of a self-test unit, an automatic commissioning stage will begin. The internal clock will commence at a random time between 0 and 24 hours – this avoids the luminaires all going into test at the same time. After the initial charge up time (up to 72 hours), the unit will carry out a full duration test. After all initial tests are completed successfully, the inbuilt processor will start the standard programmed test schedule, reporting failing functions via the status LED. In addition it is also possible to initiate a manual test on self-test emergency lighting fittings for extra peace of mind. Results Monitoring the results is straightforward. A single, bicolour LED indicates the system status. A green LED on constant with a pulse once every minute shows that the micro-processor is active and functioning. A ‘battery low’ status will be indicated by an amber LED flashing and internal buzzer which sounds for 10 seconds every four hours.

If a fault clears the LED indicators will return to green. During the test periods the following statuses will apply: ● Green LED on constant ● Passed test – LED returns to green ● Failed test – Red LED flashing

ED bulkheads generally cost less to run than other types of light since they use less energy. Designed for practical use, there are various types of bulkheads available to suit different applications. Enlightened exteriors Bulkheads are a practical and economical way of lighting outdoor spaces. Wallmounted bulkheads are perfect for illuminating doorways, paths and garages; they are functional, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and durability. Going modular Modular construction is not new, but it has recently taken off as more and more clients turn to it for quicker construction and real benefits in time and cost savings. Rather than having materials and hundreds of staff on a construction site, sections of buildings are instead constructed off site in factories and then delivered for assembly and installation. This then mitigates traditional construction issues such as delays in materials, and poor weather that ultimately produce higher costs. A single source One of the biggest challenges of the construction market is that the supply chain is traditionally long and fragmented. With many suppliers, this can cause delays as information is sought and clarified, thus pushing up costs. To avoid unnecessary complexities, it is always good practice to work with a single manufacturer where possible. WARMING UP FOR WINTER Andrew Wilson at Varilight considers some of the factors influencing decisions about stockholdings as the winter season approaches.

A

s we approach the colder months things generally start to heat up in the lighting and controls market. The darker evenings focus attention back on domestic lighting and the colder weather encourages us all to want to create cosilylit spaces where we can curl up in the warm with a book or the latest box set. Tackling all those projects put off over the summer suddenly becomes a priority. Further urgency is injected as December approaches with the ubiquitous Christmas deadline for home extensions and room refits really upping the ante, as contractors are urged by their increasingly desperate clients to get the job done before friends and family arrive for the big day. Therefore it’s important to be prepared to ensure that stock levels are where they should be. However, with current uncertainty about the economic climate, wholesalers and manufacturers may be

more cautious this year investing in stock, and so the choices they make need to be all the more precise. It’s also likely that the general economic outlook and householders’ sense of economic security will be significant factors driving investment in home improvement projects. So there are some difficult decisions to be made between ensuring that stock availability does not affect sales and not being left with excess stock at the end of the season. Future forecasts Wholesalers will have their own individual approaches to dealing with the complexity of forecasting demand. At Varilight we have plenty of sales data to inform our production planning process, but basing projections simply on historical data would neglect not only the macroeconomic context but also the impact of changing consumer tastes and new product options on future demand.

Once these considerations are factored in, predicting demand accurately becomes even more complex but we know it’s possible to prepare for what we expect in general terms. We are working in anticipation of a seasonal sales peak in the late autumn across our entire range but with sales of dimmer switches in particular showing a marked increase in sales as the nights draw in. As far as dimmers are concerned, the predominance of LED lighting means that wholesalers can concentrate building their stockholding around versatile LED dimmers, such as our own Varilight V-Pro series, and only order halogen dimmers as and when they are required. Wiring trends With decorative wiring accessories, there is no such opportunity to consolidate on one product group or finish. Instead there has been a divergence in consumer tastes and

a need to offer a wider variety of finishes. We have noticed that end users are more likely to choose warmer colours if they are upgrading their lighting and wiring accessories in the winter months. So, while cooler finishes like stainless steel and chrome are still strong performers, the popularity of brass, bronze, copper and darker finishes like matt black is likely to increase further. In fact, such is the strength of copper in particular that many wholesalers are now stocking dimmers, switches and sockets in this finish as part of their core offer. The 1000 Lumen version is slightly heavier and bigger, but of course has a brighter light output and bigger battery. These both have an additional 300 Lumen torch in their head, providing a useful spot beam. The 1750 Lumen version is the next step up and is essentially a mini site light. Again, this is much brighter and has a bigger battery and built in power bank. All three of these have a 180˚ adjustable handle/stand with built in magnets, folding hook, USB rechargeable batteries and glow in the dark strip. This all combines for a range of fantastically wellrounded work lights. To ensure the rate of returns stay low, the work lights are all built with resilient ABS and have a high IPX5 water resistance, ensuring they can survive the

occasional spell of rain or light spills. The Lithium-Ion batteries are designed to offer a dependable battery life. SMART OPPORTUNITY A recent survey by online wholesaler, Electrical Direct, found that despite the ever-growing popularity of smart home products, many tradespeople are unprepared for the increasing customer demand. Marie Parry, Group Marketing Manager at lighting and smart home product manufacturer, Scolmore, explains the opportunity this creates for the wholesaler.

T

he aforementioned survey found that 82% of tradespeople have never undertaken any form of training in smart home technology and this figure remains largely unchanged following results from the same poll in 2018. Whilst this may come as a surprise to many, it shows that despite the huge growth in smart technology and smart products ownership, there is still some way to go to meet this demand. On the one hand, technology is already an integral part of everyday life for many, in business, recreation and in our homes, and the evolution of the smart home continues to gather momentum. Yet as an industry we are faced with a shortage of trained, skilled professionals and, as this recent poll suggests, for many electricians, smart home integration is unfamiliar territory.

Opportunity This overall situation presents opportunities for forward thinking electricians, who are in a prime position to introduce the idea of smart home technology to their customers, providing advice and educating the homeowner and at the same time using their skills to introduce a smart element to their client’s home technology requirement. It also presents manufacturers with the opportunity to provide the wholesalers with the right products for this growing sector and to make sure adequate training is made available to help them understand how they work and feel confident in upselling to their customers. Intelligent wiring accessories can help make homes smarter. There are products now on the market, like our Click Smart range, which are designed to make it easier than ever for installers to provide a

smart upgrade to an existing wiring installation with minimum disruption. Smart switches Smart switches are devices used for controlling receivers and they consist of a retractive switch module and switch cover plate. They offer a range of solutions that enable the wireless control of receivers from a host of locations. By looking at typical problems encountered while out on the job, installers can sell a simple solution to the end user and introduce an element of smart control.

Here we have identified four such scenarios where a smart switch can provide a solution. To make things even easier, we have produced a boxed solution for each – with every component part necessary to provide the smart solution to a particular issue contained in a handy, boxed format.

í˘ą Add an additional switch to an existing light without the need for cabling You need to make your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It’s difficult to see in the dark and you want to avoid disturbing anyone. The solution is to fit a smart switching module behind the light fitting you wish to activate in the bathroom and then add the switch controller to a convenient place in the bedroom. You can now easily turn the bathroom light on from the comfort of your bed.

í˘˛ Fix a flickering light by using a retractive switch instead of a rotary dimmer (wired) The problem of continuous flickering when you switch on one of your lights with a rotary dimmer can be easily overcome using the multi-functional dimming receiver and a retractive switch. Replace the wired rotary dimmer with the retractive switch and add the receiver to the light fitting. This will instantly stop any flickering that may have occurred.

í˘ł Introduce two-way dimming control from separate locations (wired) If you have a 2-way switch upstairs, and a dimmer downstairs, you can turn the light on from the switch. Once dimmed with the rotary dimmer, there is no way for you to increase the brightness. You can only switch the lights on and off at the same brightness. This means you have to walk downstairs which can be hazard if the lighting is set at a low level. By using a multi-functional dimming receiver and two retractive switches, you will be able to dim from both locations, meaning no more risky trips down the stairs in the dark.

í˘´ Add a switch to an outdoor socket for multiple appliances Provide switching for external power so that sockets on the outside of buildings are only powered when you want to use them. Operate outdoor sockets from the convenience of indoors simply by adding an actuator to the socket to be controlled. Then add the wireless switch controller to a convenient location indoors for easy access and to control anything plugged into the socket. Smart future The future is definitely smart and, as more consumers become switched on to the idea of being able to control heating, lighting

and security in their homes, so the demand for electricians to install the products will continue to rise. If installers are put off by complicated and costly smart control systems, they can start with a back to basics system that offers all the control without the complexity, time, disruption and cost. Easy install The installation of a system like Click Smart is simple and flexible, with no additional cables or wall cutting required, making it ideal for installation within existing or newly constructed buildings. Receivers can be installed behind light fittings or into suitable installation boxes and can be utilised with existing wiring. Existing receivers can also be paired with a universal input switch which converts up to four push-button switches. The installer can move switches freely, relocate them when required and switches can be mounted on glass, wood or walls etc. Smart Switches are mainly powered by battery, so do not require any wiring or additional power supply. With Click Smart you have complete control, and the range allows portable and remote control up to a distance of 200m. Manual and automatic control and adjustment of lights, on/off or lighting scene creation, as well as controlling shutters, blinds, gates, latches and garage doors are all possible. The smart choice Smart homes are big business. The spend on home automation, home security and assisted living solutions, estimated at ÂŁ800 million in the UK in 2018, is growing exponentially and is expected to grow at just under 30% annually until 2021, and even then it will only have reached 40% of homes. BRIGHT IDEAS The industry has been saying that smart lighting is going to become commonplace, which should be good news for Building Managers and wholesalers as intelligent lighting is the perfect platform for smart buildings. However, there are market realities delaying adoption of intelligent lighting. Russ Sharer, Vice President of Global Marketing and Business Development for Fulham, explains the new infrastructures that could enable smart buildings.

L

uminaires make ideal endpoints for smart building systems. Consider that luminaires are the most prevalent electrical devices and they are evenly distributed to cover an entire building. LED luminaires have become more popular not only because LEDs save money, but they also are ideal nodes for building management networks, since LED power supplies are programmable. Manufacturers such as Fulham are already shipping “clever� LED components that can be programmed on site for light intensity, hue, and power consumption. For smart lighting, those luminaires need to be connected into a network capable of monitoring and managing luminaires. Roadblocks Wireless control standards such as ZigBee have been around for a long time, but they only support data traffic between a single manufacturer. To be effective, you want to support different types of data, including DALI for lighting and the Internet of Things (IoT) applications for building management. Variety and availability of product, allowing your customer to build around the needs of their client, enables you to stand out from the crowd. Using wireless communications added

to LED lighting components is the logical way to implement lighting and building controls. First consider that LED retrofits will outnumber new lighting installations for the next two decades as building owners install LED luminaires to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint. Bluetooth Bluetooth mesh is gaining acceptance as a viable communications platform for wireless control data. Bluetooth is a well-defined, open platform that offers guaranteed compatibility and interoperability. SIGqualified Bluetooth mesh is robust with built-in failover, and it is readily scalable. Perhaps the biggest advantage is Bluetooth mesh can handle any sort of two-way data traffic. Once installed, it can transmit control traffic for luminaires or building systems. For example, luminaire performance data can be received at the same time commands can be issued to manage light quality and power consumption. Building management Once installed, a smart, wireless luminaire system can be extended to support a variety of building management systems. For example, the same wireless luminaire

sensors can be used to monitor room conditions, measuring occupancy or available light from windows to automate control of luminaires, and monitoring room temperature to control HVAC. The same system can transmit sensor data to monitor and manage other building systems. Any Bluetooth device can be used for access and control, such as a laptop, tablet, smartphone, or you can even manage systems via the web. Since the LED luminaire nodes are localised, you also can use Bluetooth tagging to identify and track people or devices in the building. For example, Bluetooth tags can locate medical equipment in a hospital, or Bluetooth tags on corporate badges can manage building access. However, to reach the next phase on the evolution of lighting and building controls we will need widespread acceptance of a common, open communications platform. Bluetooth mesh offers promise for the future, but as long as we have duelling industry standards we may have to wait for an accepted approach to intelligent lighting and smarter buildings. CHANNELS Julian Barkes, KNX UK board member and Director of electrical wholesaler group, BEMCO, explains Why KNX is the right choice for the traditional electrical wholesale channel.

T

he wholesaler channel has always had the flexibility to take on new business opportunities and challenges. It’s embracing internet communication and online ordering, has adopted EDI technologies and, before too long, will interact with a new digital product database (ETIM). Wholesalers typically look to support customers on bigger projects, so they can call off products as needed, and increasingly try to get closer to key accounts by offering a better service and a better price than the next person. That is part and parcel of the cut-throat market we

operate in; but how else can you differentiate, stand out and add value? The obvious way is to consider a new product line – but make sure it is smart and relevant. Right now, smart control is a minefield. There are so many protocols claiming to be the best, and such a wide array of products, that it’s difficult to know which horse to back. None of us have a crystal ball, but we all need to take decisions to modernise our businesses and grow with the times. One thing is for certain, smart technology is here to stay. It will become more widespread, disrupting (and enhancing) the supply chain and providing opportunities for the

wholesaler, installer and electrical industry alike. The traditional wholesaler with an ‘old school’ customer base is in a great position to meet this growing demand, even if they don’t know it! Building controls AT BEMCO we took a decision in 2014 to develop a new ‘Building Controls’ division focusing on the open KNX communications protocol. We felt that since KNX is a hardwired solution unlike zigbee, z-wave Bluetooth, Li Fi, etc., that it would play to the strengths of our existing customers. In other words, it is clearly differentiated from the DIY market that is based on an internet connection – as is the case for Nest, Alexa, Sonos, etc. KNX is a proven system, with a long history (28 years) and stands up to close scrutiny. In an age when proprietary systems come and go, KNX is here to stay – for new build or retrofit, whether projects are residential or commercial. KNX is the world’s only open standard that enables smart installers to pick compatible controls from different manufacturers to build as big or small a system as they want, integrating and controlling lighting, heating, ventilation AV systems, security and more. All KNXcertified products speak the same language and can operate in harmony across the same network, which means

Compatibility is built in and guaranteed using a simple manufacturerindependent software tool (called ETS), which is centrally maintained and managed by the international and independent KNX Association. Open protocol Industry visionaries have long recognised the benefits of an open protocol. In fact, over 470 manufacturers, including the big names like ABB, BEG, Hager, Jung, Legrand, Schneider, Steinel, Theben, Wago, and Wieland, continue to invest in developing and certifying KNX compatible products; over 8,000 devices that talk to each other. All KNX products are required to be backwards compatible so that they can be used as a replacement or upgrade for existing installations, no matter how old. It’s an attractive, low-risk and flexible option. It’s no surprise then that there are some 83,000 KNX qualified installers around the globe. Electrician opportunity KNX offers a professional electrician a stepping stone to the smart home and buildings market and the opportunity to significantly increase their day rate and earnings potential. KNX applications span high end residential dwellings, MultiDwelling Units (apartments), commercial building Facilities Management, student accommodation, hotels and more.

It goes much further than just lighting control. The added value of KNX is that can bring in heating, audio, shading and security, enabling all functions to be controlled on the same switch, without having multiple apps or remotes. Wholesaler opportunity Is there room for more electrical wholesaler entrants to this market? Undoubtedly. Currently there are five KNX wholesalers in the UK (Bemco, Home of Technologies, IMP, Ivory Egg MyKNXStore). Yet there are approx. 2,500 branches of traditional electrical wholesalers in the UK. Clearly KNX is a long way from being mainstream but it’s the direction of travel that is key. According to BSRIA (Building Service Research and Information Association), KNX already accounted for 27% of the UK’s whole home smart systems market in 2017. Globally, that’s a fast-growing market, expected to double between 2017 and 2021 to reach $29.8 billion (from $15.8 billion in 2017). So, if you’re looking for a product range or technology that is here to stay, that plays to the strengths of your existing customer base, that is poised for incremental growth, then you owe it to yourself to take a closer look at KNX. FAN With Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in the news recently with draft guidance on IAQ in homes, now is the time for wholesalers to consider stocking smart fans. Stephen Totman at Vent-Axia explains the many benefits of the smart fan.

ot only will smart fans give households peace of mind on the IAQ front, but the latest smart fans provide easy install and adjustment and can be tailored to a household’s individual needs. With the health implications related to poor IAQ well established, how can the latest smart fans help improve IAQ, and so health, and what features should wholesalers look out for that will benefit electricians and households alike? Here are the top seven features for wholesalers to consider when deciding which fans to stock.

Humidistat that learns Intelligent, fully automatic humidistats are a great addition in the fight against moisture. Fans with this feature, such as the PureAir Sense, learn to run only when it can make a difference to IAQ. Continually monitoring the moisture content, these fans map a home’s annual humidity profile. This enables the fan to run only when it can lower the moisture content in the air, helping control damaging humidity levels that can lead to condensation and mould, reducing nuisance running and helping ensure a healthy environment. This means households with a basic fan can upgrade to a timer fan without having to carry out costly and time-consuming rewiring. So, this enables electricians to offer smart fans to more customers. Fans such as Vent-Axia’s PureAir Sense or the Lo-Carbon Svara offer this technology as well as a delay-on feature that can also be set to avoid the fan being triggered in the night during quick bathroom visits.

Easy install

í˘´ App control App control just got smart with the latest fans using an app to help electricians set up the fan at installation and giving households the ability to adjust the fan’s settings to suit their requirements. For example, the ground-breaking Svara and PureAir Sense both feature an intuitive app that unlocks a whole range of different functions and settings, such as silent scheduling for overnight and automatic cycles, offering flexible ventilation to suit a household’s lifestyle. The app can be used to alter humidity and light sensitivity, gives the option of intermittent or continuous ventilation, and allows the speed of the fan to be adjusted within set parameters. This is particularly useful in properties with high humidity where standard settings would prove inefficient.

í˘ľ Airing feature For people who are away for days, weeks or even months at a time, or have a guest bathroom that is only occasionally used, the quality of air in a bathroom can become very poor. To combat this, some fans now include an airing function which runs for an hour at 15l/s if the fan has been

inactive for 26 hours. This rids the room of stale air and so means no more worries about stuffy, musty odours in the bathroom.

í˘ś Quiet It’s not smart to have a noisy fan. Everyone wants to use their bathroom in peace and quiet and this just isn’t possible with some noisy bathroom fans, resulting in households so irritated by the noise they turn off their fan altogether. However, there are smart fans on the market that offer great IAQ features, all the latest control options and low noise levels too. For example, the PureAir Sense has whisper quiet operation of just 19dB(A) and the Svara operates at just 17dB(A) on trickle, so households can relax knowing they will be breathing in healthy air, undisturbed.

Last but by no means least is an easy install. It doesn't matter how smart the fan is, if it is tricky to fit, electricians won't buy it. Wholesalers need to look for smart fans that ensure easy install. Fortunately, there are new smart fan options to look out for that really speed up installation. Firstly, the PureAir Sense is delivered with factory settings that are perfect for the majority of projects. This means the fan install only involves fitting and there is no need for set up – speeding up install. But if a customer requires additional customisation, the fan’s features can easily be altered via a user-friendly LED touch panel or a downloadable app on a smart phone. Plus, the PureAir Sense boasts other helpful features that speed up install including multiple cable entry options and an integral spirit level to help ensure that the fan is fitted straight. Meanwhile, both Vent-Axia’s app fans, the PureAir Sense and the Svara, provide simple, speedy install by offering multiple installation and commissioning options via the app. Here, the app makes set-up simple, allowing the choice of intermittent or continuous ventilation; whether the humidistat triggers operation or not; and whether the overrun timer is required. This again makes the fan ideal for the vast majority of projects so wholesalers don’t have to carry as much stock, freeing up space in cramped warehouses. Everyone wins With the negative health effects of poor IAQ increasingly on consumers’ radar, the latest smart fans are sure to be a popular choice for electricians and their customers thanks to a range of features, low noise levels and easy install. Electricians will be pleased the fans are easy to install and call backs are a thing of the past, while customers will benefit from improved IAQ and being able to easily adjust the fan. ntroduced in January 2019, BS 7671 – IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition set out significant recommendations, both mandatory and optional, for new electrical installations. The recommendations are aimed at improving protection against fire and overvoltages as well as providing clarity on special location installations, in a bid to raise safety standards in domestic, industrial and commercial premises. Support needed A recent survey conducted by Bureau Veritas showed that 63% of respondents were not prepared for the changes, and 53% felt the level of available support on the market was poor.1 Duty holders are legally obliged to ensure the maintenance of a compliant and safe working environment for staff and visitors to their premises under the Electricity at Work Regulations (regulation 4). Recognising the need to help duty holders get up to speed on the latest electrical safety practices, the course, led by the Bureau Veritas Learning Academy, is designed for business owners, senior and operational managers, team leaders and supervisors. Centred on best practice, the

riginally constructed between 1959 and 1965, the ABC Buildings are being refreshed for the 21st century as part of Allied London’s St John’s Development, which also includes redevelopment of the former Granada Studios in the city. The project aims to retain the building’s retro mid-century chic, while creating a contemporary commercial environment, including an entirely new building services installation. Mechanical and electrical contractor, Encon Maintain, has been awarded the Cat A mechanical and electrical fit out project across all areas, along with a Cat B fit out on level one of buildings A (Astley) and B (Byrom), which will be occupied by leading sound engineering and production company, The Farm Group. SLH is an independent, notfor-profit housing association that manages around 3,000 homes in South Lakeland, Cumbria. 3000 Series Multi-Sensors are SLH’s alarm of choice, including the Ei3024 Optical & Heat Multi-Sensor and the Ei3028 Heat & Carbon Monoxide Multi-Sensor which has been designed specifically for use in kitchens and provides tenants with protection from both Fire and Carbon Monoxide poisoning. TANSUN METAL PROCESSING FACTORY Based in Walsall, Cashmores is a specialist coil processor in stainless steel and aluminium, providing a bespoke service to customers nationwide. To ensure workers are comfortable all year round, the company has installed Tansun infrared heaters into its factory work stations. Following discussions and a site survey, Tansun’s Apollo infrared heaters, in black, were chosen as the most suitable solution for the factory. 18 A1A and 8 A1J Apollo infrared heaters were selected for the factory’s very high ceilings and were specified to replace the existing inefficient and costly heating system to keep the area warm during the winter months. The infrared heaters are controlled via localised switches for individual zones, which provide instant heat and allows workers to control the heating in areas only when and where required, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. www.rdr.link/WH037

SCOLMORE KINGDOM HOUSING ASSOCIATION With responsibility for over 4,000 domestic properties, and in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Fife-based social landlord, Kingdom Housing Association, decided to act immediately to increase the general and emergency lighting provision in all their communal areas, over and above any likely guidance emanating from the Hackitt report. Andy Walls, Kingdom Housing Association’s Property Maintenance Manager, responsible for overseeing the installation project, comments: “After researching various products we found that Scolmore’s Inceptor EVO LED Bulkhead range was ideal in meeting with our specifications. CED ELECTRICAL GROUP MERIDIAN LIGHTING LED BRICK AND SPIKE LIGHTS AICO POCKET-SIZED GUIDE With the recent changes to BS 5839-6:2019, Aico has condensed the information into a pocketsized guide. British Standard BS 58396:2019 covers specific recommendations for fire alarm systems in all domestic premises and covers both newbuild and existing properties. The standard contains a large amount of detail on all aspects relating to the design and installation of fire alarm systems, including the type of alarm to install and the areas of the property to protect. To further support customers with the changes, Aico has updated its counter mat for Wholesalers. DRAYTON WISER HEATING SYSTEM Drayton has announced a series of updates to its Wiser multi-room heating system, updating its Wiser OpenTherm module. The new OpenTherm module allows boilers to continuously adapt their system temperatures by forming a connection between the boiler and heating control, providing real time room temperature demand updates. Once the heating control detects the home or individual room is reaching the desired set point room temperature, it will tell the linked OpenTherm boiler to lower the system temperature. Additionally, Wiser Heat app has been updated to include new functionalities. Under the new ‘Functions’ pull up tab, users will be able to locate the new 'Boost All' and 'Cancel All' features. ‘Boost All’ will increase the temperature across every room thermostat and radiator thermostat by 2ºC for one hour. After the one-hour period, all boosts will be deactivated and rooms will return to the scheduled temperatures. Alternatively, if the user wants to turn off the boost earlier, they can do so using ‘Cancel All’ in the same pull up tab. FUTURE PROOF Following the BSI’s recent update of the domestic fire detection and alarm system standard, specifically Part 6 of BS 5839, Ian Ballinger, Certification Manager for FireAngel, outlines the current opportunity the industry has, to not only comply with these regulations, but future-proof domestic properties for years to come.

N

otable changes have been made to the British Standard BS 5839-6 for fire detection in respect of rented, owner occupied and sheltered housing. Revised guidance on the installation of communal fire alarm systems in purpose-built blocks of flats has also been introduced. Currently, Fire Safety and Building Control Officers, amongst others, will be advising landlords of social, private and sheltered housing on the fire protection they should specify to meet these new requirements. Whilst installing suitable systems that are reflective of these new minimum standards is the current priority, there is a wider opportunity for the industry to take a proactive approach to fire safety that ultimately future-proofs the property and its tenants. This can be achieved by stocking and recommending innovative fire protection systems that have the flexibility to be adapted at a later date. For example, it is recommended that smoke and heat alarms are replaced every 10 years. However, in the social rental and sheltered housing sectors, it’s possible the tenants within those properties may change within that 10 year period. By leaving the same alarm systems installed in the property for a decade, it poses the problem that the initial solutions installed may not meet the safety requirements required to protect the new individual or family now living in the property. This is particularly important for elderly or vulnerable individuals or people who might be considered to have an increased level of disability and are therefore a higher level of potential risk with regard to fire and carbon monoxide safety. Smart compatibility Installing solutions such as FireAngel’s Specification range, which is Smart RF compatible, provides social landlords

This is particularly important for vulnerable tenants, such as those with dementia, who may be displaying high risk patterns of behaviour, such as leaving the hob on after cooking a meal.

FireAngel predict The FireAngel Connect Gateway uses a unique algorithm and features ‘FireAngel Predict’ patented technology to identify and highlight dangerous patterns of behaviour.
