Unique is an often-misused word, but it is the correct term for Riddle’s Court and its connections with that singular figure, Patrick Geddes. The proposed Patrick Geddes Centre at Riddle’s Court will be, therefore, doubly significant. However, to prepare an interpretation plan for Riddle’s Court means, in effect, preparing an approach to explaining a triptych of topics which are all closely inter-related and which, in combination, represent as much a philosophy as they do physical attributes and activities. The diagram draws together the many key threads that bind the story together and help, also, to disseminate the story in interpretive terms. The third and fourth columns are reflected in the themes that are set out in full in Chapter 6. These relationships, complex as they appear at first sight, are the essential characteristics that imbue the background to and the purpose of the Patrick Geddes Centre and inspire its work. They will also be key elements in its branding and marketing strategies, and in the learning and activities strategy, all of which must inter-relate closely with the interpretation plan and vice versa.
This report reflects our initial thinking, prepared after meetings with SHBC staff and visits to Riddle’s Court supported by study of plans, reports, articles, websites and books relating to the building and its Old Town context, to Patrick Geddes and the context of his life and work, and to the proposed work of the Patrick Geddes Centre. It is a first endeavour to encapsulate the strands of the story and articulate the themes which can embrace these strands. The principles set out here have been discussed and agreed and are the basis on which the Interpretation Plan was prepared. This document should be read alongside initial design proposals for interpretive media.

PATRICK GEDDES CENTRE - INTERPRETATION PLAN
10.5 Interpretive Proposals
43
Riddle’s Court Entrance - Area A (off Lawn Market ) The entrance pends to Riddle’s Court are typical of Edinburgh’s High Street, relatively low key although the decorative stone work is distinctive and sight lines down the Close are relatively good. In order to attract more casual visitors, the entrance needs to be enhanced with clear communication/ interpretation provided to encourage curious tourists to explore further. Given the historic significance of all the buildings in this area, there are limitations to the intervention that can be proposed. Phase 1 1. An existing carved text stone (Riddle’s Close) is set into the pavement. This should be cleaned and if required re-cut to make more prominent 2. A series of small metal plaques installed within the new paving stones leading into the close creating a trial of “teaser” icons leading to the entrance of the Patrick Geddes Centre. 3. Decorative metalwork feature applied to the existing entrance gates or, if funds permit, the replacement of the existing gates with new sculptural gates reflecting the Patrick Geddes theme. 4. The installation of a sculptural panel that extends the length of the entrance pend. This would incorporate text and images designed to create a highly visual display incorporating tactile elements made from cast stone and timber. 5. New lighting to be carefully integrated into the pend to enhance the architecture and the interpretive elements. Led lighting behind the sculptural panel providing a soft wash of light to the pend wall. 6. Redecoration of the pend walls to tie in with the overall Patrick Geddes brand. 7. Metal hanging Riddle’s Court sign consistent with the other High Street closes

Do a little… do a lot!
The Lodge offers superb views. It is a threshold to the Trossachs and lies on the Highland boundary. A spectacular combination of mountains, forests, lochs and tumbling burns. Much of the early work by the Forestry Commission in the 1930s and 40s must be attributed to the first Head Forester, Alistair Cameron - a man of vision. He was able to match each tree species with the right soils. This paid handsome dividends not only through his forest’s dramatic effect on the landscape but also in the quality timber we now harvest.
