For the Chair’s message, dates of PC meetings and how to contact the PC see p.22. The PC will be delivering a questionnaire to those homes in the immediate proximity of the Village Green giving those residents an opportunity to have their say on the proposal to provide a play area facility for older children and adults. The Parish Plan Recreation and Leisure Group held a consultation at the Parish Carnival to gather opinions on their proposals for Hollinfare Village Green - see p.8. Planning permission for The Rhinewood Hotel has been granted for the demolition of the hotel and the erection of 36 dwellings, comprising a mix of 27 houses and 9 apartments. The Planning Inspectorate Appeal Decision can be viewed on: http://myplanning.warrington.gov.uk/Planning/core/viewDocument.page?DocNo=8114629 During the Summer holidays Pre-School are moving premises to be relocated at St Helen’s Primary School and will be offering longer hours, opening for morning sessions from 9.05am until 12.05pm and for full day care from 9.05am until 3.05pm. They are also changing the age at which children can start attending Pre-school to the term following their 2nd birthday. Although based in school, Pre-school will still be an independent charity registered Pre-School. They will be working alongside WASPS who can provide a Breakfast and After School Club at school for children aged from 3 years. At the end of the Summer term Pre-school will be saying a fond farewell to their longest serving member of staff Pauline, who has worked for Pre-school for well over 20 years and has served on the committee before that. The Pre-school staff, committee and families all wish both Pauline and her family well for the future. For Pre-school and WASPS contacts see p.10. Due to the Pre-school moving premises the Community Hall has more availability to offer from the end of July onwards. For bookings phone 07851 267891 or email bookings.commhall@outlook.com. 3

Hollins Green Community Shop held an official launch on 16th May which was a big success, with some visitors using the shop for the first time. An update was shown on the day with a progress chart highlighting that the shop was busy and doing well, but that it needed to step up to the next level in terms of sales to realise another £75 per day in sales and about £20 in profit to cover its fixed running costs. The sale of plants and hanging baskets added some seasonal colour to the shop front. Various fundraising events have been planned for throughout the year. A raffle and children’s tombola was held at the Open Day and Parish Carnival. Recently the shop launched a ‘200Club’, which is a lottery whereby each member pays £1 a month (upfront for the year) and cash prizes are given each month of £50, £25 and £25 with the shop retaining 50% of the contributions as funding. Existing committee members and volunteers are doing a fantastic job and all with a welcoming smile. However, more volunteers are still needed to work on shift in the shop and more committee members required to work on funding and in sourcing volunteers. If interested in either of these roles you can call into the shop and leave your details or telephone 0161 775 7022. If you have not yet visited the shop, why not pop in and see what it has to offer! See p.18 for address and opening times.

RIXTON-WITH-GLAZEBROOK COMMUNITY HALL Manchester Road, Hollins Green WA3 6JZ Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES The Parish Carnival was heralded a great success, with over 1,400 people, young and old alike, coming along to the Village Green to have a fun and enjoyable time in the sun. Many of our community groups hosted stalls and raised funds for their upcoming projects. The Carnival Committee would like to thank the residents of the parish for their support. In addition, we would also like to express our thanks to our event sponsors and all the volunteers who helped out on the day to make Carnival 2015 run smoothly; a true community event. Refurbishment works to Church House didn’t stop the Friends of St. Helen’s Church hosting and enjoying several fundraising events throughout the Spring and Summer months. They welcomed a large crowd to the Community Hall to sit back and enjoy an excellent performance by Irlam Male Voice Choir; held a ‘good as new’ stall during the Garden Safari, hosted a talk by Ray Jeffrey on Hadrian’s Wall and shared items from the church archives at the Parish Carnival along with Mike Kenwright’s rolling movie of village life in years gone by. Friends of Hollinfare Cemetery are pleased to announce that Raynaud the fox sculpture now has two cubs for company, thanks to fundraising by St. Helen’s School children. The sculptures have brightened a once dark corner of the cemetery and are raising a smile on visitor’s faces. The entrance to the cemetery continues to have a cheery welcome, thanks to the seasonal plants donated by a local farmer and the greenfingers of the volunteers. This year’s Garden Safari was yet another colourful and enjoyable community event with over 100 visitors, some coming from Culcheth, Leigh, Stockton Heath and further afield. Sale of programmes raised £612, which will all be put towards future Parish Plan projects. The lovely variety of gardens and wonderful scarecrows, art, music and refreshments created a fantastic memorable atmosphere. Rixton-with-Glazebrook HS2 Action Group continue to monitor the situation with regard to the proposed line. For the latest updates visit www.warringtonstophs2.co.uk. Rixton-with-Glazebrook Pre-school held a fundraising bingo night in June with fantastic prizes kindly donated by local shops and businesses, raising £250. The children made special cards to say ‘thank you’ for their kind support and enjoyed a village walk to hand deliver them. A very generous donation of £100 was also received from the family of one of the current pre-school children. Pre-school thank all for their support. Monies will go towards new resources and equipment for their new premises at school. For contact details for Pre-school see p.10.

St. Helen’s School are thrilled to have had roller shutters fitted to the Reception outdoor area. Partially funded by the Hamilton Davies Trust, the shutters have enhanced the opportunities for the children to engage in even more outdoor learning. The children have been busy taking part in fundraising events, including wearing red noses and painting their faces ‘funny for money’ in support of Red Nose Day and organising a cake sale to raise funds for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal. With so many cakes to sell the sale took place on two mornings. Year 3 and 4 enjoyed taking part in African Drumming workshops and held a concert for parents. Children from the school council visited Hollinfare cemetery and had their photographs taken with the fox cubs carving, which they raised money for by having an Easter chocolate raffle. From chocolate eggs to real eggs, Class 1 took part in a ‘living eggs’ project and have watched excitedly as the eggs hatched and the chicks developed and grew stronger every day. Venturing further afield, Reception children visited Stockley Farm in May and Year 6 enjoyed their residential visit to the Conway Centre on Anglesey where they took part in sailing and canoeing on the Menai Straits. They also took part in a special service in Liverpool Cathedral. Further summer activities include a visit to Tatton Park for Years 1 and 2 and sports day for all in the first week of July, weather permitting. Performances of KS2’s Summer play will take place on two evenings and on one afternoon for grandparents. Children continue to benefit from football and fitness coaching from the Manchester United Foundation, funded by the Hamilton Davies Trust. ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES

In June HDT held their Annual Celebration at the Black Swan and were proud to welcome some of the local residents who give their time freely to volunteer within the community, for the benefit of all residents. Two volunteers, Phil Atkinson (Community Shop) and Neil Fairfax (Parish Carnival) were especially surprised to receive a Community Award as a special thank you to them and their respective groups and to acknowledge all their hard work and commitment. Both these projects have been a resounding success and have brought the community together and created even more volunteering opportunities for residents and local people to become involved in. Amongst others Cadishead Band were also awarded for their contribution to providing entertainment at local events within Rixton-with-Glazebrook, Cadishead and Irlam. 7

Parish Plan - Action Group Update

POLICE COMMUNITY SUPPORT OFFICER (PCSO)

Social & Community Action Group have had a busy few months organising the Parish Carnival, which was a huge success (see p.5). New community notice boards have now been installed at the Village Shop, Glazebrook Methodist Church and Rixton Claypits car park enabling the various community events and activities to be easily advertised and viewed by residents in Rixton, Hollins Green and Glazebrook, as well as by visitors to the parish.

PCSO Bethan Roberts continues to patrol our village. Joint police and local ward councillor surgeries provide opportunities for you to discuss any issues or concerns which are affecting you or your community - see diary dates. A monthly news bulletin is produced by Cheshire Constabulary which highlights community engagement and priority action taken in our area - visit www.cheshire.police.uk then click on Warrington East > Rixton & Woolston or visit the police page on www.rixtonwithglazebrook.net. Residents can also sign up for Cheshire Police Alert, a community messaging system, by visiting www.cheshirepolicealert.co.uk for more information and to register. By registering you receive news and appeals, local crime information and crime prevention advice direct as an email, text or voice message. To contact Cheshire Police call 101 - this is a non-emergency police number which should be used to report less urgent crime, for general enquiries or to speak to a local officer. In an emergency dial 999

Look of the Parish Action Group and volunteers held another litter pick in May collecting 22 bags of rubbish. Swathes of Summer colour now replaces the wonderful show of Spring bulbs around the Parish thanks to this ‘green fingered group’ who have planted Summer bedding at the Community Hall, Village Shop, Glazebrook Post Office, Vets and at either entrance to Hollins Green. Dog bag dispensers have now been installed at either entrance to Hollinfare Village Green and on the green at Glazebrook. Dog walkers are urged to utilise these and the bins provided to improve our green spaces and pavements. Getting Around Action Group have devised a survey to look at possible improvements to local bus travel in consultation with Rixton-with-Glazebrook residents, Rural Rider local bus provider and Warrington Borough Council (WBC). The survey was delivered to all households in the Parish and the results are now being analysed and the finding will be processed and forwarded to local service providers and WBC Transport Services for them to consider if any possible changes needed will improve and help residents with their local bus travel needs. The Getting Around Group would like to thank all the residents who participated and returned the survey so promptly. Recreation and Leisure Action Group held a consultation at the Parish Carnival to gather opinions on their proposals to improve Hollinfare Village Green. A lot of positive interest and feedback was given on the day. deadline for completed questionnaires is 6th July. These will then be analysed and findings publicised. WARRINGTON BOROUGH COUNCILLORS updates “We are glad to report that the bus shelter has been installed outside the Community Hall, which should prove to be beneficial to residents when we experience inclement weather. We have also requested H markings to be installed outside the entrance to the St. Helen’s Church. Inconsiderate parking has resulted in difficulty in accessing the church at both weddings and funerals and so we are pressing for this in an attempt to alleviate this issue for everybody’s benefit. We have also recently had foliage reduced on parts of Holly Bush Lane to improve the sight lines which were proving to be hazardous. We would like to offer our congratulations to Dave Trenbath on his successful promotion to Chair of the Parish Council and look forward to continuing our working relationship with the Parish Council. We continue to report day to day issues that require attention such as street sweeping, lighting and highway maintenance. We would like to remind residents that we hold surgeries at St. Helen’s Church House, Hollins Green, at which council related or policing issues can be discussed. - see pages 14-17 for dates and times.” Bill Brinksman 01925 821922 bbrinksman@warrington.gov.uk Paul Bretherton 01925 852403 pbretherton@warrington.gov.uk Tony McCarthy 01925 251221 tmccarthy@warrington.gov.uk EAST WARRINGTON AREA MANAGER - Ruth Whitworth “East Neighbourhoods is now working even more locally and is running community get togethers. The Rixton and Woolston community get together has been sharing good practice amongst community groups and supporting the Parish Plan Getting Around Group in looking further into cycle ways and with producing a questionnaire about the Rural Rider bus service. The next Rixton and Woolston get together is on Monday 21st September, for time and venue email: eastneighbourhoods@warrington.gov.uk East Neighbourhoods also has funding available for local community groups with applications up to £1,000. The next deadline is 25th August. St Helen’s Church House received funding from this funding pot in April, towards the refurbishment of Church House.” For more information about how you can apply visit: www.warrington.gov.uk/neighbourhoods 24

RIXTON-WITH-GLAZEBROOK PARISH COUNCIL (PC) Message from Chair Dave Trenbath “Hollins Green Village Green - Over the past 18 months the Parish Council with Warrington Borough Council have been advising the Parish Plan - Recreation and Leisure group on the proposed development of a play area on the village green for older children and adults. In respect of those that live around the green the Parish Council will be delivering a questionnaire which I urge all who receive to complete and return by the stated date. I must stress this is purely to gain opinion and does not replace Planning Office consent. Changes in national policing structures - I recently attended a meeting alongside other parish councillors and senior police officers at which we were informed of police budget changes, but assured that we would retain one dedicated PCSO and PC and that with the use of portable technology, ensure effective deployment of resources. Dog fouling - I would like to thank those responsible dog owners for clearing up and disposing of their dog’s poo, but there continues to be a small number who fail to do so, they continue to have a disregard for others and the health risks posed to children. Please be aware Dog Wardens are patrolling the village. Litter Pick - Volunteers are required for a parish litter pick on Saturday 19th September, meeting at 10am in the Black Swan car park.” Dave PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS The Parish Council meeting is a meeting in public for residents to attend as observers. Parish Councillors acting on your behalf meet on the 3rd Thursday of every month (except August) from 7.45pm at The Community Hall, Hollins Green - see diary for monthly dates. Questions for discussion should be put in writing to the Parish Clerk at least 7 days prior to the meeting at which the letter will be discussed. Parish Clerk - Marilyn Lowe 5 Hartley Close, Lymm, Cheshire, WA13 0JJ. You can now email your question(s) or read minutes of meetings on the Parish Council website: www.rixtonwithglazebrookpc.org.uk 22

The group can be contacted at info@warringtonstophs2.co.uk or via their facebook page warringtonstophs2 or on Twitter @warringtonhs2 5
