Hollins Green Community Shop staff and volunteers are thrilled to have won the Palmer and Harvey’s Retailer of the Month award. The shop was recognised for championing the independent sector and its committment to providing extra value to its customers. Shop Manager Julie Atkinson has a team of four paid staff and 30 volunteers. Julie said: “Winning the Retailer of the Month award means so much to us. We have already received positive customer feedback on the lines we currently stock and winning this prize of 90 lines will give us a fantastic opportunity to expand on this. Not only does the shop offer convenience products, it has also become a real hub for the village, where people can enjoy a friendly conversation over a hot drink and a slice of homemade cake.” The staff are looking for ideas of what customers would want to see the shop stock for Christmas - suggestion slips are in the shop. Christmas orders for turkeys, meats and hampers are also being planned. The committee have been busy with fundraising activities, including a raffle and the introduction of a 200 Club lottery. Lottery numbers are drawn monthly and the winning numbers are posted in the shop. To register for the lottery please ask a member of staff. More volunteers are needed - you can call into the shop and leave your details or phone 0161 775 7022. See p.18 for shop address and opening times. Coming to a Village Green Near You! The Rixton-with-Glazebrook Carnival is to be held on Saturday 25th June 2016. Committee members are needed to help plan and run the event. Please contact Neil on 0161 777 6957 if you are interested in joining the group. Rixton Claypits Nature Reserve have consent from Natural England for a large scale conservation project that includes opening up an area of scrub woodland to reclaim lost areas of species rich grassland and reclaim several ponds currently shaded out where the Great Crested Newts once bred. The end result should increase the population of newts still further, resulting in the Claypits being one of the best places in the world for Great Crested Newts and right on our doorstep! The Rangers are in the first stages of putting together a development plan for this carbon landscape project which, due to its scale, would take five years to complete. Monies are available from the Heritage Lottery Fund. 3

Rixton-with-Glazebrook HS2 Action Group is still active, although there is not much news to report at the moment. No final decision about our section of the route has been made as yet. The information that the group has is that there is still a lot of work to do on phase 2 (which is our phase). The government intended to make an announcement later this year and that may still be the case, but the group feel that it could well be into next year before we hear anything. The group are still in contact with the HS2 representative and also our local MP Helen Jones and will post any further details as they get them. Hamilton Davies Trust (HDT) aims to provide continued and enhanced charitable support to Irlam, Cadishead and Rixton-with-Glazebrook. rn

Since July 2015 HDT has provided Rixton-with-Glazebrook community groups with various support with literature and publicity for their activities and events. These have included: • Community Shop posters • Beavers, Cubs and Scouts registration and camp literature • ‘Shine the Light’ posters and tickets • Pre-school prospectus and policies • Advertising activities, news and events in ‘in the know’ and on www.rixtonwithglazebrook.net Community Shop volunteers have provided an incredible number of hours supporting the shop over the last 12 months and HDT recently helped them to find some additional support by advertising and finding a part time book-keeper and shop assistant. If any other community groups would like help with finding volunteers, please let HDT know they can’t promise to find the right person, but are very happy to try. HDT’s popular iTea & Biscuits sessions continue to support local residents in learning about the wonderful world of online, helping them to improve their IT and digital skills and understanding of social media. The next 8 week course commences on Thursday 14th January 2016 at Hamilton Davies House. To book a place contact David Taylor on 0161 222 4003 or david@hamiltondavies.org.uk As part of their Christmas Lights programme HDT, with help from NC Developments, have been busy checking and maintaining all the tree lights throughout Irlam, Cadishead and Rixton-with-Glazebrook in readiness for the light up on the 1st December. Last year a permanent tree was installed at Irlam Leisure Centre and this year one is also being sited on the green at the back of St. Helen’s Church in Hollins Green. Community groups are encouraged to apply to HDT for help - phone 0161 222 4003 or email hello@hamiltondavies.org.uk To download a grant application form visit www.hamiltiondavies.org.uk Grant applications are considered bi-monthly - the next Trustees meeting will be held the middle of November. 7

Parish Plan - Action Group Update

POLICE COMMUNITY SUPPORT OFFICER (PCSO)

Look of the Parish Action Group has been busy during the summer maintaining flower planters and beds, bringing a flourish of colour to the parish. The three dog pooh bag dispensers have proved popular with dog walkers and the group are looking into funding to provide another one. The group thank all residents who have helped with the litter picks to date BUT more volunteers are needed please. The next litter pick is on Saturday 6th February - see p.17 for details.

PCSO Bethan Roberts continues to patrol our village. Joint police and local ward councillor surgeries provide opportunities for you to discuss any issues or concerns which are affecting you or your community - see diary dates. A monthly news bulletin is produced by Cheshire Constabulary which highlights community engagement and priority action taken in our area - visit www.cheshire.police.uk then click on Warrington East > Rixton & Woolston or visit the police page on www.rixtonwithglazebrook.net Residents can also sign up for Cheshire Police Alert, a community messaging system, by visiting www.cheshirepolicealert.co.uk for more information and to register. By registering you receive news and appeals, local crime information and crime prevention advice direct as an email, text or voice message. To contact Cheshire Police call 101 - this is a non-emergency police number which should be used to report less urgent crime, for general enquiries or to speak to a local officer. In an emergency dial 999

Getting Around Action Group has analysed the data from the ‘Local Bus Service Questionnaire’ resulting in the following comments and recommendations:• The Rural Rider and 100 bus services are invaluable for the village and surrounding residents to help with their independence and social activities. • There needs to be a review/revision of the present Rural Rider route and timetable to incorporate a wider area of the village to accommodate more residents with limited mobility to access the service. The group could help to identify areas of need. • More publicity of the service / revised service is required via notice boards, ‘In the Know’ and the community website. (see p.19) Recreation and Leisure Action Group held a successful sweet stall at the Parish Carnival and an exhibition / consultation stand to show proposals for improvements to the Village Green. The stand was very well attended and the group thank all the residents who filled in a questionnaire. Results have been analysed and are available to view on www.rixtonwithglazebrook.net Members from the group attended the October Parish Council meeting. They are pleased to report that the Parish Council have voted to fund and refurbish the 0 to 8 years play area and create an under 10’s football pitch. The group have offered their support to the Parish Council with the delivery of these improvements. A community notice board has now been erected in the Rixton Claypits car park and keys are available from either the Rangers on 0161 777 9726 or John Eccles on 0161 777 9685. Next meeting - Weds 13th January, Rixton Methodist Church 7.30pm Parish Plan Secretary - Helen Weight - 07530 895677 Parish Plan Chair - Pete Higson - info@rwgparishplan.net 8 8

WARRINGTON BOROUGH COUNCILLORS updates “We would like to update residents with the news that we have recently asked for carriageway repairs to be carried out on Dam Lane, Dam Head Lane and Bank Street and we are happy to confirm that these repairs have now been carried out satisfactorily. You may have also noticed a new H marking on the road outside the main entrance to St. Helen’s Church, Hollins Green. We requested this action on behalf of the church who were concerned that inconsiderate parking was resulting in difficulty in accessing the church for occasions such as weddings and funerals. We hope that this will now alleviate this problem. We continue to report day to day issues that require attention such as street sweeping, lighting and highway maintenance and would like to remind residents that we continue to hold residents’ surgeries at St Helen’s Church House in Hollins Green at which council related or policing issues can be discussed. RIXTON-WITH-GLAZEBROOK PARISH COUNCIL (PC) Message from Chair Dave Trenbath “Warrington Borough Council (WBC) and Rixton with Glazebrook Parish Council (PC) distributed questionnaires to homes around the Village Green in September. Their purpose, to gain the opinions of the proposed developments on the lower portion of the Village Green owned by WBC. These proposals included an adult outdoor gym, dog exercise area, multi-use ball court and on the PC land refurbishment of the present play area and re installation of the football pitch. Following the return of the questionnaires the preferred choices were; refurbishment of the present play area, reinstallation of the junior football pitch and creation of a new play area for 8 to 14 year olds. The least preferable being the new adult gym, paths and installation of multi-use ball court. Following appraisal of the questionnaire and its associated comments the PC voted against proposals, but as there was strong support for the present play area to be refurbished and junior football pitch reinstated, the PC will move forward to ensure these works are undertaken. The PC with WBC recognise and thank the Parish Plan Group for the time and effort put into these proposals.” Dave PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS The Parish Council meeting is a meeting in public for residents to attend as observers. The final surgery for 2015 is set for Saturday 14th November - see pages 14-17 for dates and times.” Bill Brinksman 01925 821922 bbrinksman@warrington.gov.uk Paul Bretherton 01925 852403 pbretherton@warrington.gov.uk Tony McCarthy 01925 251221 tmccarthy@warrington.gov.uk EAST WARRINGTON AREA MANAGER - Ruth Whitworth East Area Neighbourhood has funding available for local community groups, with applications up to £1,000.
