Book in a Day

have so much to be thankful for as we head into winter here at HEPL. This November and December look for our “Season of Giving” initiative to celebrate the spirit of giving through many handson and creative opportunities at the library. November also brings us International Games Month, offering a variety of programs sure to en tertain! Coming up in January, mark your calendars for Comic Book in a Day with Nickel Plate Arts. Join artists of all ages and skill levels and bring your creativity to make your own comic book from scratch. Be sure to check out our curated list of community and giving resources for inspiration on ways to give back to your community. We are most grateful for all of you, and look forward to seeing you at our libraries this season. Thank you for being HEPL

Join HEPL as we celebrate International Games Month in November! We’ll have a Stranger Things themed escape room, board games and playtest ing, a VR open house, video game truck, and more. You’re sure to find a game for you! Learn more about this exciting month on page 7!

Celebrate your love of comic books during our Comic Book in a Day! Sign up for the Comic Book in a Day Challenge to make your own comic book from scratch (we’ll help!) and compete for prizes. You can also attend our various workshops leading up to the Challenge to learn more about writing and illustrat ing your comic books. Learn more on page 16!

During this Season of Giving, we encourage you to give back and volunteer at one of the many chari table organizations in our communities that make Fishers and Noblesville such great places to live. We’ve also curated a list of resources that provide information and ideas for you to make a difference in any community! Learn more about how you can get involved on pages 18-19!

As we draw near to the end of the year, many in our community will turn their focus to celebrations and times of giving. This year, the library will celebrate that spirit of giving in November and December with our initiative “Season of Giving.” Happenings include partnering with local organizations for donation drives, fun programs, and acts of service.

HamCoLove is a local organization striving to end period poverty in Hamilton County. Part of their mission is “to provide necessary period care products to Hamilton County, IN residents.” HEPL will be collecting items from HamCoLove’s wish lists throughout November and December. Wish lists are featured below.

Please bring donations to any service point at either library location through December 31, 2022. If you would like to donate directly to HamCoLove, they have a Venmo: @HamCoLove. Learn more about this orga nization at HamCoLove.com

Support those in need in our community this season by donating unopened boxes of facial tissue as well as new socks, winter hats, and mittens/gloves (in all sizes). Look for donation collection spots at both the No blesville Library and the Fishers Library throughout November and December. Donated items from the Fish ers Library will go to the Delaware Township Trustee’s office for distribution, and donated items from the Noblesville Library will go to the Noblesville Township Trustee’s office for distribution.

Giving comes in many forms, including acts of service. Be a volunteer and join HEPL and International Di saster Emergency Service (IDES) on Monday, November 21 from 4-7pm at the Fishers Library and Wednesday, November 30 from 4-7pm at the Noblesville Library to help us pack meals for the hungry. To participate, register on our Calendar of Events.

If you are a teen looking to create a homemade gift this season, join Crafty Teens at 5pm on either Decem ber 5th at Noblesville or December 7th at Fishers to create “Hot Chocolate in a Jar.” Decorate your creation with ribbons, tags, and bows to keep for yourself or to give away to celebrate the Season of Giving.

Join Fred May from the Kadampa Meditation Center in Indianapolis for a virtual talk and guided meditation during our “A Meditation on Giving Happiness to Others” on December 19 at 7:00pm.

There are numerous opportunities in our Ignite studio to create one-of-a-kind gifts for friends,family and even your canine companions. Join our Maker in Residence, Megan Benson during her “Holiday Gift Class” to learn the basics of weaving and complete a gift for someone special or yourself. In November drop-in to create your own Eco-Friendly Gift Bag or Tag. December drop-in programs include Woven Dog Toys and Ma tisse Trees. After you’ve made your marvelous gifts be sure to stop by the “Screen Print Your Own Wrapping Paper” program to complete your gift!

Adults are also invited to perfect some gift wrapping hacks at our virtual “Gift Wrapping 101” program, just in time for the Season of Giving. Most supplies will be provided (via pickup at the library one week before) but you will need your own scissors and tape.

Clay ‘Drop-In’: Clay Ornaments

Sunday 12/4 | 1-4pm | Ignite Studio @ FIS

Drop in to Ignite and try your ‘hand’ at hand building. Hand building is a great way to learn about the properties of clay and its various stages. Instruction displays will facilitate self-exploration on a different topic each time including coil, slab, sculpture, stamping, sgraffito and more. The clay is self-hardening and paintable, and patrons will be able to take what they make! Ages 5+.

Crafty Teens: Hot Chocolate in a Jar*

Drop-In Activity: Woven Pet Toys

Monday 12/5 through Sunday 12/18 | All Day | Ignite Studio @ FIS Stop by Ignite to make a dog or cat toy to donate or give to your own furry friend. Weave together strips of fabric to create a colorful rope. Step-by-step instruction sheets will help you in this self-guided activity. Materials will be available in Ignite while supplies last.

Maker-in-Residence: Holiday Gift Class*

Tuesday 12/20 | 5:30-7:30pm | Ignite Studio @ FIS Learn the basics of weaving on a simple frame loom in this class for beginners and complete a gift for someone special or yourself! We’ll cover how to set-up your loom, basic weaving techniques, achieving varied textures and how to finish and display your work. We will create your choice of: coaster set, placemat, woven pendant or wall-hanging. Class includes supplies and a portable 4-6 inch loom to take home! Reg istration begins two weeks prior to class. Ages 12+.

A Meditation on Giving Happiness to Others*

Monday 12/19 | 7-8pm | Virtual Join us for a virtual talk and guided meditation with Fred May from Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis. We give to others for many reasons during this time of year. Perhaps we think of giving material things, but material things do not give real lasting happiness. Giving our attention, time, and care are invaluable gifts that often mean more than giving presents. But, when we do it with the heartfelt wish to bring them happiness, we are truly giving.

Trapped in the Upsidedown (A Stranger Things Escape Room)*

As a member of the Hawkins MS AV club, you are dis traught to hear that your friend Will has gone miss ing. You discover a police file along with a strange locked box that you believe contains the mysterious portal between you and Will. Upon closer examina tion of the evidence in the file, you realize that Will is trying to communicate with you from the Upside down. Can you decipher his messages, and get him back to the portal before it closes for good? This escape room is suitable for adults and youth grades 6 and above. Sign up as a solo participant or group. Each time slot will include up to 8 people. Attendees who arrive more than 15 minutes late will forfeit their time slot.

Community Board Game and Playtesting Day

Join us for a fun-filled afternoon and get your game on at the library to celebrate International Games Month! Bring your family or friends, choose a board/ card game from our library or the Who’s Yer Gamers library, or bring your own. We’ll have plenty of space available for play, and Who’s Yer Gamer ambassadors ready to teach you how to play. Members of Indy Tabletop Game Creators will have their designs ready to playtest. Everyone will have a chance to win great door prizes as well! All ages welcome. Drop-in for a while or game the whole time!

VR Open House

Saturday 11/12 | 1-4pm| FIS

Experience virtual reality through Meta Quest 2 headsets to celebrate International Games Month! Attendees will have approximately 15 minutes to

explore VR apps/games after a librarian gives an overview of how to use the equipment. Please note that this is a first-come, first-served event due to the limited number of devices. Participants must sign a waiver of liability before using the equipment; a parent or guardian must be present to complete a waiver of liability for a minor. This program is for teens and adults.

GameStar Mobile: Video Game Truck

Saturday 11/12 | 1-5pm | FIS (parking lot)

Experience GameStar Mobile’s game truck! With room for 16 gamers to play at the same time, enjoy the latest video games on a variety of consoles in their mobile video game theater. All ages welcome but those in grades 5 and under must be accompa nied by a parent/guardian. If needed, players will rotate in/out of the truck in order to accommodate high demand.

Board Game Battle Royale

Tuesday 11/29 | 6-8pm | NOB Join us for a wild, fast-paced fight for board game supremacy! Show off your skills at a variety of games including Bananagrams, Klask, Azul, and several “surprise” games, and rack up points on the score board. Participants will play in pairs, so grab your BGF (Best Gaming Friend) or meet someone new here. The top two teams will duke it out in an epic final game that requires balancing natural reflexes with keen strategy. The first place team will receive a $50 Moonshot Games gift card, and our runner-up team will receive a $25 Moonshot Games gift card. Regardless of your final score, we guarantee you’ll leave feeling like a winner. Have fun and game on! This program is for adults ages 18 and up.

Novel Hunters: A Middle Grade Book Club | Grades 3-5 Wed. 1/11 | 6-7pm | FIS | Poppy by Avi Explore a variety of chapter books and enjoy themed activities through this in-person book club! Kibo Coding! | Ages 4-7 Sat. 1/12 | 11am-12pm| FIS Come learn how to code screen-free! Kibo is a robot designed to teach children ages 4-7 beginning coding. Each program will start with guided circle time with an introduction to a theme, a shared book, game or exercise and a small group activity with our robot.

Ukulele Club | Ages 8+ Thurs. 11/3, 12/1 & 1/5 | 6-7pm| FIS Tues. 11/10, 12/13 & 1/10 | 3-4pm | FIS Learn to play the Ukulele! Learn such techniques as: how to hold the uke, how to tune, and how to read chords. Learn to play simple songs with 2 or 3 chords. We will also practice singing and playing at the same time. If you love houseplants and have plants or cuttings to share, please drop by our Houseplant Swap! This is a drop-in event where you can chat with other house plant lovers, as well as Master Gardeners. If you don’t have a plant/cutting to bring in, we will have a few extra to share. Please label your plants so we know what they are, and use containers you won’t need back.

Something not connecting with our library apps? Upset with your tablet settings? Do you own your smartphone – or does it own you? Bring your device by for handson assistance with a librarian. Dementia Friends Community Info Session* Wed. 1/11 | 6:30-7:30pm | NOB

Dementia Friends Indiana info sessions are a brief but very impactful way of learning about dementia, under standing and appreciating the perspective of someone living with dementia, and having the knowledge you need to better communicate and interact with those living with the disease and their family caregivers. Attendees of DFI info sessions will also learn actions they can take to advance the DFI movement and mis sion of creating better understanding and awareness of dementia, reducing the associated stigma, and creat ing more welcoming, safe, and conducive community environments for those living with the disease. Upon completion of the DFI info session attendees will be registered as a Dementia Friend in Indiana. Ages 18+ only, please. Registration required.

Winter Gardening* Mon. 1/23 | 7-8pm | Virtual Winter gardening is a great way to grow literally hun dreds of perennials for almost no cost. All you need are milk or water gallon cartons, potting soil, and seeds. You can also start cool season vegetables this way. Begin saving your milk cartons now as you’ll be able to plant outside as early as January! Registration required.

Three Flutists Concert

Sun. 11/6 | 2-3pm | FIS Journey through time with three flutists at the library. They’ll play a variety of tunes from the distant past to the present, with the goal of bringing you to their viewpoint - flutes are the greatest of all instru ments!

Travel to the world’s famous buildings and wonders without leaving the library! Experience “armchair travel” through virtu al reality (VR) with Meta Quest 2 devices. Circle City Ringers Concert

The Circle City Ringers are an audi tioned bronze-level community hand bell ensemble. The musicians will be playing seasonal music on their traditional English handbells and hand chimes. Puzzle Swap

Do you love jigsaw puzzles? Join us for our first ever Puzzle Swap where you can refresh your jigsaw puzzle collection by swapping out your old ones for new-to-you puz zles! Here’s how it works! Turn in your puzzles at the Fishers Library anytime during business hours from Dec. 26 - Dec. 30 to pick up a voucher for each donated puzzle so you will be ready to swap at the event! Please bring no more than 12 puzzles. If you cannot make it to the library before the swap, please arrive 30 minutes before the event on Dec. 31 to turn in up to six (6) puzzles and receive your vouchers. Bring your vouchers to the swap on Dec. 31, 10am-2pm and “shop” for puzzles using your vouchers. No registra tion is necessary. Puzzles must be: at least 250 pieces; complete (not missing any pieces); in the origi nal manufacturer’s box; in overall good condition (clean and dry).

Puzzle Showdown*

This is the event to chase away the winter boredom! Teams of four will race to complete a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle in just 90 minutes. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place teams! Learn how to create a resume from a template using Google Docs. You’ll need a Google account in order to make a resume using this method.

Comic Book in a Day is back! Follow along as chal lenge artists compete to create an entire comic book in under eight hours. Meet professional comic book artists. Watch live drawing demos. Try your hand at drawing your own comic book. Add a panel to a col laborative comic book project. Participate in a comic book read-a-thon. And take a turn experimenting with VR art. Stop by periodically throughout the day to see how the challenge artists progress, and find out who takes home the championship belt.

Come learn about the photo emulsion method of screen printing using our Pro-Light Exposure Unit. This is a versatile method of screen printing making fine line drawings, hand lettering techniques and half-tone positives possible. You can use this method to create your own textiles, t-shirts, greeting cards, posters, wall art, and more.

Photoshop and Silk Screening Open Studio

Get tips from our silk screening expert on using Photoshop to make images for photo emulsion screen printing or just basic silk screening. We can show you Photoshop basics or address any challenges related to this form of printmaking.

Creative Bug Class: Painted Fabric*

Come learn together in this fun class! Ignite will provide the supplies while participants and a staff person follow a Creative Bug tutorial to make a piece of fabric art. Creative Bug is a free app provided by the library that has hundreds of online tutorials. Get familiar with Creative Bug’s content while experi menting with this fabric painting technique.
