Black Arts is a presentation of new work from Nicholas Hamilton Holmes.
The collection evolves a ‘tubular’ design language where Holmes has bent, shaped and turned wood into various forms and then dyed them all black. The work is murdered out, blacked out, ebonized and non-visible--ornamented only by the purity of the form and some light stippling. The use of Brazilian Soapstone, black Danish Cord, Black dyed Shearling and BRASS deepen the works and lighten the mood.
Most of the objects are useful--a lounge chair, tables, book ends and a coat rack; but Holmes’ appreciation for useless objects shines through.
The monotone colour pallet is intended to focus the viewer’s attention on the structural forms as well as exemplify the designer’s control over the medium of wood.
Typical of Holmes’ work, all the pieces are designed and built to employ traditional techniques and joinery, and are fully intended to be used in an applied fashion.
