Amazing English 1 Student’s Book
Advertisement
Each unit of the Student’s Book includes five, two-page lessons that are designed to be simple to use and easy to teach. They include lessons about amazing people, places and things, as well as lessons that focus specifically on students’ listening, speaking and writing skills. These lessons are followed by a review of the vocabulary and grammar that has been presented as well as a theme-related song, which students will enjoy listening to and singing.
Within each unit, there is also a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and Culture section. The CLIL parts focus on learning about another subject such as maths, geography or history in English. The Culture parts of the units focus on different aspects of life in the UK and other English-speaking countries, often encouraging students to compare them to their own country. Each CLIL and Culture section is linked to the theme of the unit and comprises fun and communicative activities involving pair or group work. This section also has a Now take it home! feature which encourages students to tell their parents what they’ve been doing or learning about in class.
Each unit ends with a fully-illustrated episode of our exciting ongoing story. Using language from the same or previous units, each two-page spread will capture students’ interest and motivate them to read in English and use the language they have learnt. The comic story is brought to life in full animation in the Student’s e-book.
There are also values, pronunciation and video features in each unit which ensure that students are exposed to all aspects of language learning as well as encouraging them to connect their learning experience to the real world.

Problems
in a warmer world
Our world is getting warmer. Warmer seas mean the sea ice in the Arctic is melting. This is dangerous for some sea animals.
Polar bears need the ice to catch their favourite food: seals. They can’t catch seals in the water. Without the ice, polar bears won’t have enough food and they'll be hungry. Some of them won’t be healthy and others will even die. Mother polar bears won’t have many babies. Seals also need ice and snow. They rest on the ice and hide in the snow. They also make homes for their babies there. Without enough ice and snow, seals will start to die. This is bad for the seals and for the polar bears too. Some animals are already very rare. For example, there are only about 350 North Atlantic right whales.
They are about 15 metres long, but they only eat tiny plants and animals. These plants and animals don’t like warmer seas and these whales can’t fi nd food very easily.
Fact: Polar bears can weigh up to 600 kg! Fact: Some seals can stay under the water for up to two hours! Fact: Whales are the biggest animals in the world.
The ocean is their home.
B Read the fact sheet and tick (✔) the correct boxes.
Which animal
1 eats seals? 2 is very rare? 3 is the biggest? 4 needs ice to catch food? 5 lives only in water? 6 uses snow to make a place to live?

What will our lives be like 50 years from now? Will we live on space stations? Will we go on missions to Mars? Will we have found cures for common diseases? 51 As far as our health is concerned, scientific researchers have been working hard for years now to revolutionise the future of medicine. 1 D
Fifty years from now, it’s likely that scientists will have designed wonderful devices that will completely revolutionise healthcare and prevent diseases. In the future, we will have micro-robots inside our bodies. 4 They will warn us when we have a health problem. For example, they will 23/01/2020 20:17 There has also been an increase in life expectancy over send a text to our doctor’s smartphone if we have the past few decades. Professor Chris Lowe is a scientist at the University of Cambridge. 3 In the future, we won’t take medicine when we’re ill. We won’t have complicated operations in hospital for more serious health problems either. So, how exactly will healthcare improve in the future?

In a few years from now, scientists will create artificial materials using human cells. They will be able to create new organs for people who need them. 5 They will also be able to create new lungs, hearts, arms or legs whenever a patient needs them!

Researchers believe that healthcare will be personalised in the future. People will wear smart clothes and will live in smart homes that will check their health 24 hours a day. For example, people who suffer from back pain will wear smart T-shirts and people who can’t run or walk up stairs will wear smart stockings! Patients won’t go to hospital for treatment. 6
These changes may sound like science fiction, but scientists believe they will become a reality over the next fifty years. It’s possible that we will all benefit from high-tech personalised healthcare one day.
