The current situation:

University major project Nutricia Medical Nutrition (not endorsed)

1 - patient who could be mobile

Brief

Conceptualise and prototype a solution to a medical issue you have encountered, bringing value to the mass market.

2 - nutrients given through tube 3 - IV stand limiting mobility

Problem

Thousands of people in the UK suffer from various digestive disorders. Many of them require nasogastric tube feeding, but are otherwise capable of living normal lives. The current treatment and equipment limits their independence and has been known to cause social issues.

Opportunity

Provide a solution for tube-fed patients which allows them more freedom of movement and reduces the social visibility of their treatment. 2

How do people carry things? How could they carry them instead?

Concepts

Three main concepts emerged; a rucksack, a waist-worn version, and a product worn on the shoulders - potentially under the user’s clothing to hide the equipment from public view.

Testing & Selection

Low-fidelity prototypes were made from cardboard, bags of flour, and old rucksacks. Testing with users was conducted to find out where the various components could be carried most comfortably and discreetly on the body.

3

Vault Following the testing, several ideas were explored on paper and with CAD; including stylistic direction, fabric construction, waterproofing, and more.

Solution

Prototyping

Unable to hide the equipment otherwise, a product which fit inside the user’s rucksack was proposed instead of a highly visible, medical-looking bag; a common solution currently found on the market.

A high-fidelity prototype was constructed from representative materials to enable further aesthetic and functional testing with potential users.

Use

Vault is used during the day for top-up feeds through a nasogastric tube. The user can change the pump’s settings without removing it from the case.

Acceptance

The product is fits comfortably into the laptop compartment of users’ own rucksack; out of sight during use. As such, it can be worn while performing most tasks and activities.

Features

- Easy access to pump - Opens to lay flat - Tube management - Fits in rucksack - Minimised visibility - Carries one litre of fluid - Works with Nutricia Infinity+ pump 5

Prototyping the mould tool in blue foam

CNC manufacture of the mould tool

Mould inserts manufactured by hand

Polishing inserts to ensure tolerances

CAD

3D models of the product and the mould tool were made in Creo. This data could then be used for PlasticAdvisor analysis, to create a set of engineering drawings, and to program the CNC mill.

Water-jet cutting the donor parts

Donor parts released from metal sheet

The first product moulded with the tool

Manufacture

The mould tool was CNC milled, while the inserts which could not be CNC’d were machined by hand. Then the tool could be used to injection mould numerous widgets.

Features

- Tough spikes to remove dirt and stones from the soles of walking boots - Clip on the rear for secure carrying - Holes in the metal core so the widget can be laced onto boots as a Point-of-Sale item - Appeals to Timberland’s core user base: customers who prioritise brand visibility and are eager to maintain the appearance of their boots 7

Brief

5-can hopper

In teams, design, assess, calculate, and manufacture a device which crushes metal drinks cans using electromechanical means

Problem

Drinks in aluminium cans are purchased in the millions. They can be efficiently recycled, but they also take up a great deal of space in bins in homes, cafĂŠs and bars

Opportunity

Proximity sensors Ball-screw mechanism

Stepper motor Belt-drive

Demonstrate electrical and mechanical skills by producing a can crushing machine which could be used to reduce the space they take up in bins at home and elsewhere

Delta Traditional kettlebells

Client

DCA Design International

Brief

Redesign an everyday object; something that people have become habituated to and has seldom changed since its introduction.

Problem

Women want to be healthy, but don’t want to gain muscle mass. Home gym equipment is expensive, takes up a lot of space, and often doesn’t cater to the beginner. Varying weights are required.

Target user interviews

Insights from observation

U.T.E. analysis exercise

Opportunity

An exercise aid which introduces female users to both bodyweight and weighted exercises; building up their confidence so they can progress to working out in public; especially at the gym.

Brainstorming with Post-Its

Existing products 10

User Interviews

1 - Delta dumbbells can be comfortably carried to the gym or on a run whilst empty

2 - They can then be filled with water to match the desired weight at a stream, tap, or fountain

“I feel intimidated by men when I go” “It’s too expensive to just run at a gym” “I always lose motivation once I get there” “Following Instagram routines at home is easier and more comfortable than the gym”

Pain Points

Membership fees Time and effort to travel to the gym Embarrassment and social discomfort Expensive home gym equipment Storage space needed for home equipment

Insights

Weighted exercise can be more effective at improving muscle tone and body image than aerobics alone. As a result, bodyweight and free-weight exercise are becoming more common amongst women in the gym and at home.

3 - The dumbbells can then be used to aid bodyweight exercises like push-ups and tricep dips... 4 - ... Or they can be used as free-weights for both static and dynamic exercises

13

Delta Features

- Raised handles can be used for either free-weight or body-weight exercises - Water-filled compartments make choosing the right weight for the exercise easy - One pair is enough for numerous exercises

Appeal

The product is aimed at women who want an introduction to exercising with weights, without the negative elements that can be experienced from attending a gym. The styling, especially the teal colouring, is approachable, but does not pander to ‘flowery’ stereotypes

Tough, but not forceful. Energetic, not aggressive.

14

Push-fit closure for filling anywhere

Indicator shows fluid / weight level

Compartment can be filled with water to increase the overall weight to 1.5kg per dumbbell

Thick handles ideal for improving wrist strength, and grip when wet

Solution

Aimed at women lacking experience or confidence in exercise, Delta offers many key benefits over traditional dumbbells: - Raised handles can be used for free-weight and bodyweight exercises; both dynamic and static

Encourage. Empower.

- Water-filled compartments allow the user to choose the weight suitable for their routine - Just one pair is enough for numerous exercises - Delta dumbbells can be filled from a stream, tap, or fountain and transported when empty and light - The Delta dumbbells can be comfortably carried to the gym or on a run whilst empty - Delta dumbbells can then be used to aid bodyweight exercises like push-ups and tricep dips or as free-weights for both static and dynamic exercises

Placement For my Diploma in Professional Studies (2015-2016) I spent a year at Londonbased M-Integrated Solutions. M is a fullservice agency specialising in marketing, events, and experience design.

16

There I learned a great deal about creating spaces, designing for emotion, working to brands’ specifications, and challenging the expectations of the customer and client.

Working at M in a multi-disciplined team for a year, I developed immeasurably as a professional designer. See their website for more information: www.m-is.com

Process I believe that problems can’t always be solved with more things; though they can with better things. Great design solutions are found more often when the process is considered as integral to the product.

Though much of my design work has involved using my six-step process to provide a solution, my favourite projects have an existing product as a starting point for updates and improvement.

1. Discover

Discovering that a problem exists, or that the current solution is insufficient.

2. Define

The problem is defined with a Specification, providing a way to measure success.

3. Design

Research and ideation – coming up with as many new ideas as possible.

4. Develop

Refining the most viable concepts into workable solutions.

5. Details

Adjusting CAD models and prototypes based on real-world experience and data.

6. Deliver

Delivering to the client a product that they want – on time – is key. 17

Personal Work My time outside of work is often spent at the climbing wall or in my sketchbook, and sometimes working on painting commissions.

These examples are from a series called British Spirit; paintings of UK-made alcoholic drinks bottles.

18

More examples of both my personal and professional work are regularly added to my instagram:
