The Sacred Link Multi Faith Centre in Melaka, Malaysia 3rd Year Final Project 2020

This project is located in South East Asia , in the heart of the world heritage city of Melaka, Malaysia. As a result of a few weeks exploration in this unique city a brief was devised to create a Multi Faith and Community centre which would unite people of all faiths aswell as being a beacon of hope in this culturally diverse neighbourhood. The design concept revolves around the sequence of spaces within a urban setting where the visitor experiences a spiritual journey. Taking inspiration from the embedded courtyards within the notorious local shophouse typology aswell as the traditional layout of the Siheyuan Prototype, the multi faith complex aims to be a ‘city within a city’ - a place that allows the visitor to disconnect from the busy city environment and emmerse themselves in contemplation and valuable interaction with other communities. Through a series of inter connecting courtyards, arcades and a combination of open and enclosed spaces, the multi faith centre will take the visitor on a journey as they discover this oasis of volumes. The design ethos is driven by three main values of community, unity and religious harmony. The building complex as well as being a place to pray accomodates other functions including spaces for learning, teaching, exhibiting and relaxing - nutrition for the whole body.

The Multi faith Centre can be accessed from two main streets and these elevations illustrate the frontages to these prominent routes . On one side you have Jalan Takong (Harmony Street) where the passer by sees this preforated wall giving glimpse of the activities but as soon as they walk further the view opens up to this glorious domed structure. On the opposite side you have Jonker Street where the building frontage aims to correlate with the faces of the surrounding shophouses with its horizontal rhythm. The two duo pitched volumns are united in the centre with a celebrated arcade which aims to attract the public with its impression of infinity as a result of the view of the repeated vaulted arch.

‘Desert Dune’ Hyperloop Campus Architectural Competition Entry Summer 2020 June - August Nestled in the midst of the Nevada landscape, the ‘Desert Dune’ Hyperloop Campus aims to be the home of innovation, fostering the creation of future travel. Taking an organic form, the building intends to become in sync with the surrounding environment , and have equally fluid spaces within to encourage valuable interaction across the many sub departments of the campus which include, classrooms, labs, an auditorium, museum, apartments and recreational facilities. The internal layout features five petal like clusters all linked via useable circulation and amenity spaces , decorated with greenery and water features. The idea was to have this building complex as an oasis in the middle of the desert where its occupants visit it in order to create and envision future travel; a feeling of comfort and delight within a vast open arena.

Located in the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps, this Alpine retreat aims to be a sheltered haven for avid hikers and landscape enthusiasts who venture deep into these environments , to discover nature’s beauty. On the ground floor the microhome features a compact living and activity space adajcent to a humble kitchen and dining area. Following on from there you have extra storage under the stair access leading on to the WC including a composting toilet and free standing shower. As you walk up the stair the wall includes shelving within the timber structure. The first floor is the sleeping loft that is perfectly secluded and comes with a fabulous view into the valley below. The entire building intends to have as small a footprint as possible and is arranged in a prefabricated form as a kit of parts making it easy for the general public to assemble. The home also includes strategies such as rain water harvesting and solar electricity generation.

Dragon Centre Performance Venue in Conwy, Wales BA3 1st Term Project, December 2019

A project located in Conwy , Wales, adjacent to the existing town walls that circumbulate the whole town. The brief involved creating a perfomance venue with three main spaces including a large 150 interior performance space, a recital space and an outdoor perfomance space for approximately 400 people. This design consisted of a building mass that stepped down a steep terrain and appeared to curl around the corner of the town walls providing a grand entrance. The concept behind the design was the Mythical Welsh Dragon; Rhomboid Zinc panels have been used on the facade to resemble the scales of the dragon and the overal sharp and sligtly triangulated form is result of form finding from the initial dragon body.

Site Plan The building sits tight against the town walls surrounded by various entry points. As the site steps down , there is a rhythm of paths that give visitors areas to socialise. In times of a certain event taking place this immediate area around the building will host smaller activities to further optimise the use of the site which is currently a barren patch of land.

Attention To Detail Sectional Scale Model of the Sibson Building, Kent BA3 1st Term Project, October 2019

The first project in third year involved modelling a section of an existing building with all its individual components. We as a group of 3 were given the Sibson Building at the University of Kent designed by Penoyre & Prasad to model. Having only 2 weeks to construct, we used technical drawings of the building to piece together a replica of the 4 storey structure and facade. The model was to be seen as an elevational section, allowing for a 360 degree view. Once completed the model was exhibited at the ‘Temporary Contemporary’ Exhibition at Queensgate Market, Huddersfield, for two weeks. This activity gave me further understanding of how the building fabric is constructed and what sort of materials are needed to achieve the desired result in relation to the proposed building function.

Architecture Drawing Prize Entry for the 2020 Architecture Drawing Prize ‘A Post Covid City’ - 2nd October 2020

Shown here is my entry for the Architecture Drawing Prize organised by World Architecture Festival, Make Architects and the Soane Museum. This drawing submitted in the Hand Drawn category visualises a Post Covid City taking London as an example. It uses the Palace of Westminster and remagines the urban environment with the changes put in place due to the pandemic resulting in a new way of living. This drawing focuses on London, a city that has proven to be resilient through several periods of crisis. Careful thought and design has been put in place in all sectors to efficiently navigate through this period of sheer uncertainty. This drawing aims to encapsulate a bit of the changes that are beginning to be implemented from office layouts and remote working to transport structure, social activities and housing. It features two perspective views , using the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben as a drawing base. The city now strives to be more greener , cleaner, quieter, more bikeable, more walkable. A process that has been accelerated in the wake of the pandemic fostering permanent change and ensuring a more efficient urban environment. The drawing aims to concisely communicate a global strategy with elements of symbolism. On the next page are further examples of my hand drawings ; a tool I utilise greatly whilst working on design projects or during travelling.

Hand Sketches

Photography When travelling I enjoy capturing the architectonics of various countries and these experiences are left in memory within these photographs. I developed this passion in my earlier years whilst living in Japan and Germany and it has grown since starting Architecture. I have been featured various times in The Telegraph & Argus (West Yorkshire Newspaper) Showcase Spread with my photographs of various sites in Europe, Middle East and Asia. This sort of photography gives me a whole portfolio of images to look to for inspiration when designing projects. Shown here are a brief selection of some of my photography.
