Andy's Story: Living a Full Life at Northeast Residence
by Brion Curran, Human Resources Specialist and Centralized Scheduling Manager
Ask Andy how long he’s been with NER, and he’ll say, “forever.” Andy began his journey with Northeast Residence in 2000 when he moved into a newly opened twin home in Hugo. He now has his own private apartment-style space at a NER home in White Bear Lake. He has also lived in Stacy and Forest Lake. Of all the places he’s called home, living the country life in Stacy was his favorite.
When asked what he’d like people to know about him, Andy laughed, “I’m funny!” Boy is that true; when it comes to other hobbies, Andy joked about liking to take things apart…even though he doesn’t intend to put them back together. He is also an animal lover, enjoys bike rides, and watching TV.
When it comes to living in a group home, Andy is eager to share his thoughts with others and doesn’t shy away from an honest conversation. He understands the very real staffing shortage we are experiencing not only in our field, but across our communities. “I don’t like the idea that it’s hard to find staff, but it’s everywhere. If we had more staff, we would be able to do more stuff.”
Andy described this as a current downfall of living in a group setting. “It’s difficult for me to live in a group home because there feels like less freedom to do the things I want to do.” Andy is thankful he can do things on his own in the community, like going for walks and shopping. As for the plus sides of where Andy lives, he raves about the semi-independent living arrangement in his NER home. It helps him relax and gives him time to type on his computer. Andy said if a friend asked him about living in a group home, “they should find a place like [I have] and stick with it!” He likes this setting because he gets help when he needs it while still having time to himself. In fact, Andy’s proudest accomplishment is moving into his apartment on his own, citing it as an important step in his life.
Andy looks forward to work as a highlight each day. “I like going to work, I get out of the house for a few hours.” He admits the paychecks are nice, too, and helps with his shopping habits. At the end of the day, Andy likes to relax while watching his favorite HGTV shows, including “Property Brothers” and “Love It or List It.”
What’s next for Andy? He would love to learn how to drive a car so it’s easier for him to get around. Someday, Andy would like to own a business recycling cans and fluorescent light bulbs.
His advice for new employees? “I would tell them that Northeast Residence/Hammer Residences is a nice company to work for.” Andy thinks the merger between Northeast Residence and Hammer Residences is an ideal situation because more opportunities for all will open over time.
Andy loves to decorate for Christmas.
