SUMMER FESTIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS! The BID’s three-month-long Summer Festival has once again proved successful as thousands of people came to Hammersmith for an eclectic line-up which helped to enhance the vibrancy of the area. The annual programme of events which this year included Wimbledon, live opera, theatre and dance performances and the Olympic Games, was designed to attract people into the town centre and help drive up footfall and spend in Hammersmith, which we’re happy to report it did.

HAMMERSMITH BEN EFITS FROM FOOTFALL BO OST Footfall in Hammersmi th town centr e rose significantly -month-long Summer Festival.

DOZENS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE IN LYRIC SQUARE Best Restaurant - Wagamama

White balloons bearing messages of peace and happiness floated above the Hammersmith skyline this September to mark the International Day of Peace. Dozens of schoolchildren joined the Mayor of LBHF Mercy Umeh on Tuesday, September 21 in Lyric Square to commemorate the day which invites the whole world to commit and contribute to a culture of peace. Students from Phoenix High school, St Paul’s primary, Normand Croft, Larmenier and Sacred Heart and Brackenbury primary supported the event’s peace pledge by signing tags and attaching them to the balloons. They were also invited to write their own pledge and stick it on a giant dove, which was suspended in the square. Around 100 people attended the event, which was organised by the HammersmithLondon Business Improvement District (BID) and Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

DEVELOPMENTS ON THE RISE

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Work has started on two developments that will have a big impact on the future look of the town centre. A new £275million office and retail development is being built on the former site of the Bechtel building at 245 Hammersmith Road. The office building will be 12 storeys tall and the ground floor will incorporate a new public plaza as well as restaurants and cafes. It is hoped the development will attract up to 2,500 jobs for the area.

Developing a CSR agenda is a great way for businesses to have a positive impact in the local area while also benefitting the company. Community support can take a number of different approaches; team volunteering, individual volunteering, business support and business sponsorship. Below is a list of organisations that the BID works alongside and can help set up volunteering projects with:

GROUNDWORK Groundwork is a social and environmental regeneration organisation that works with communities across London to create better places, promote sustainable living and promote lives. They offer employee volunteering days which are a rewarding way to bring colleagues together, learn new skills and discover new talents.

MAGGIE’S CANCER CENTRE Located in Charing Cross Hospital, Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families. Maggie’s has a number of volunteering opportunities available within the centre, ranging from gardening to office administration and support.

DOORSTEP LIBRARY The Doorstep Library helps to support families in disadvantaged areas in Hammersmith and Fulham by going into their homes and reading to children. The local charity operates a team of volunteers who read with children, lend them books, befriend the families and offer support. In the west end of King Street work has begun on the redevelopment of Hammersmith Town Hall, which will see the council offices relocated to a new building on the former site of Cineworld and the current town hall extension converted into flats. The area in front of the town hall will become a public plaza with new restaurants, cafes and a new cinema.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! Keep an eye out for Hammersmith’s dazzling new Christmas lights when they are installed from November 20th. The BID is also hoping to boost the festiveness of the town centre by installing THREE Christmas trees; one in Lyric Square, one outside the Eventim Apollo and one outside L’Oreal. For 2016 HammersmithLondon is celebrating everything digital so its Christmas event programme will have a very avant-garde feel to it. By incorporating state-of-the-art virtual reality, interactive Christmas cinema, social media and more, we’re certain that Hammersmith is going to enjoy a thoroughly modern 21st century Christmas.

AGE UK Hammersmith & Fulham Age UK H&F is dedicated to providing essential services for older people, their carers and families. Volunteers are always needed especially with Christmas fast approaching as the charity organises a host of activities and events and additional help is much appreciated.

ACTION TUTORING An education charity that provides small group tuition to GCSE students in the borough who are not normally in a position to afford it. Volunteers are needed to provide tutoring in either Maths or English for a one-off tutoring day or for approximately one hour a week across a school term. For further details about the charities and their volunteering projects, please email r.basham@hammersmithlondon.co.uk or call 020 3362 4626.

BID FUNDING ADDITIONAL OFFICERS HammersmithLondon is funding two additional police officers for the area which will help to address town centre crime. Starting on November 1st, the two extra officers will be attached to the BID and are over and above those provided by the Metropolitan Local Policing Teams. The officers will help to provide a reassuring presence within Hammersmith town centre.

HammersmithLondon has created a bespoke document which sets out recovery plans for businesses to adopt should a major incident occur in the area. The ‘HammersmithLondon Business Continuity Plan’ takes into account the needs of the area and offers a checklist to ensure that businesses and employees are safe and as resilient as possible should an emergency, such as fire, flooding, terrorism or gas, take place. Currently businesses are responsible for creating their own contingency plans for staff so HammersmithLondon has produced this document, with assistance from the council and the police, to help make this process as simple as possible. If you would a copy of the Business Continuity Plan or to find out more, please phone 020 3362 4626.
