SOUTHERN TEA PARTY

While Carl and Carol have lived in Hampton Hall for a little over a year, they have already accumulated a lifetime of friends and memories. Before transitioning from full time work to retirement, Carol and Carl lived their entire lives in the Hudson Valley in New York. The couple met while working together at a law firm in Poughkeepsie in the early 1980s and married a decade later after Carl finally woke up and realized Carol was the one. Carl practiced law with a firm for ten years, and then had a successful real estate practice for the next thirty years. Carol worked in banking early in her career, and then fulfilled her dream of being a stay-at-home mom. She eventually went back to work for a local municipality as Assistant to the Town Planner and is sorely missed for her work ethic and her baking prowess.

Carl and Carol have two children, Connor (26) and Caylea (23). Connor is a huge Buffalo Bills fan. Carl told him early on he was destined for a lifetime of misery! He graduated from the University at Buffalo. Connor and his

Caylea graduated from Colgate University (Carl’s alma mater) in 2021 and used her gap year to establish her own successful jewelry business (MadebyCaylea.com) while working full time for an energy company that concentrates in wind and solar energy projects around the country.

She recently completed her first year at the University of Virginia School of Law and plans to specialize in environmental law. Caylea and her longtime boyfriend, David, got engaged last summer while on vacation in Costa Rica and plan to marry after she graduates. They have the cutest wiener dog named Barnaby.

Carl and Carol are long-time owners in Hampton Hall, having discovered the community in 2005 on an exploratory trip looking for a great place to retire someday. After falling in love with Hampton Hall, they decided to build that year, but having children late in life kept them working until recently. Since settling in last winter, Carol has been active with the Ladies with Ladies group and has loved helping decorate the clubhouse for many of the fun events we are fortunate to have here. She plays Bunco and Mahjong and enjoys taking weekly Zumba classes at the fitness center.

Carl signed up for pickleball their second week in the community and has enjoyed playing several times a week ever since. He enjoys his pickleball peeps and recently played with the inaugural Hampton Hall 3.0 men’s league. Carl plays advanced Euchre, bridge with the Monday afternoon group and is a founding member of the Hampton Hall History Hounds. Carl enjoys Lowcountry history and is in training to be a docent at the Heyward House. Together they host a beginner Euchre group monthly and play on a Bocce team. They also love taking OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) classes at USCB, exploring the Penn Center, Hunting Island Park and HHI historic sites.

Carl and Carol love to travel, and were fortunate to be able to take several family vacations with their children, including memorable trips to China and Hong Kong, the Canadian Rockies to Vancouver, Hawaii, a Mediterranean cruise, and a fabulous bus tour of our Western National Parks. Last fall, they enjoyed a cruise through the Aegean and Adriatic from Athens to Venice. This summer will find them on a Scotland intensive cruise followed by a driving tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Many of you probably don’t know that Carl is adopted and after testing with Ancestry.com, he discovered that he has 20 surviving paternal first cousins in County Down, Northern Ireland. Carl and Carol look forward to meeting some of the cousins in September after their cruise. They won’t be surprised if a few pints of Guinness are part of the celebration!

Having such a positive experience moving to Bluffton last year, Carl and Carol tell all of their friends to join them while they are able to enjoy all that Hampton Hall has to offer. Be sure to have your Google calendars ready to be filled up once you are here…it’s like summer camp for adults!
