CELEBRATING PARTNERSHIPS We are delighted to be celebrating our exciting and diverse partnerships in this publication. With so many partnership activities taking place during the 2018-19 academic year, the following pages can only offer a flavour of our many meaningful and rewarding links with schools and other local organisations. The events detailed within this booklet could not have succeeded without the imaginative and creative talents of our partnership colleagues, and we wish to record our thanks to them all for their help and support. Hampton remains committed to playing a full and active role within the local community because we know that the cross-sector collaborations provide better educational opportunities and outcomes for everyone involved. We look forward to building upon our work with schools within the ISSP and beyond. Meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships are fundamental to our School community and I am delighted that so many Hamptonians wholeheartedly embrace this distinctive aspect of our ethos. Kind regards,

Kevin Knibbs Headmaster Celebrating Partnerships 2018-19

Our Music and Drama partnerships flourished last year, ranging from concerts within the community to music workshops and teaching sabbaticals.

CHOIRS FOR CHANGE

COMMUNITY CONCERTS Our pupils contributed to a range of community musical events last year, from the annual Jazz in the Park concert to the woodwind concert by our Clarinet Ensemble at Linwood Care Home. The summer appearance of the Swing Band and Jazz Group in Bushy Park is always a popular draw for the local community.

Pupils from Hampton School joined over 2,000 singers nationwide in a concert as part of the Choirs for Change campaign, run by Health Poverty Action. Held in the Hammond Theatre, the concert focused on the It Takes a Village project, which supports maternal health in developing countries. Hampton’s choristers performed alongside choirs from Hampton Hill Junior School and Twickenham School and raised over £500 for the charity.

ART SABBATICAL Art teacher Adrian Bannister spent a three-month sabbatical running a series of instrument building and playing workshops in four local primary schools. The project combined art, music and woodwork as pupils designed, built and decorated guitars and ukeleles. One of the primary schools has now started to run regular ukulele lessons and pupils have held music concerts to showcase their new instruments.

PUPILS WORKING TOGETHER A key aspect of school partnerships is the benefit that can be gained from engagement and collaboration between pupils. Through different schemes, including peer mentoring and team-based initiatives, pupils learn new skills, build confidence and develop talents.

GENOCIDE AWARENESS Hampton’s Genocide80Twenty pupil campaigners collaborate with several maintained schools in a number of partnership projects. In 2018, Hampton invited more than 70 pupils from five maintained schools to our Genocide Awareness Day to hear testimonies from survivors of the Holocaust and genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia. Another partnership project has been the production of the Genocide Know More newspaper in collaboration with eight partnership schools. The publication marked the 70th anniversary of the Genocide Convention and has been used to educate and raise awareness among young people across the country.

PUPILS HELPING PUPILS

WORKING WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS SCHOOLS Hampton enjoys long-established partnerships with two local schools, Clarendon School and the Marjory Kinnon School. Annual day trips to destinations including Legoland and Hobbledown Adventure Farm, supported by Hampton and LEH pupils, are a highlight of the year. Hampton boys also join midday playtime at Clarendon School where pupils enjoy each other’s company on the football pitch or just spending time chatting together.

Every week, Hampton boys spend time with us both in the classroom and playground and our pupils really value them being here. There is also the much anticipated summer outing funded by Hampton and LEH. Pupils from both schools truly enhance the whole experience. May this partnership continue for many years to come. Mrs Su Woodhouse, Key Stage 3 Leader, Clarendon School

Hampton Sixth Formes provide support at a number of local primary schools. They listen to children read and assist with maths. Over 30 Fourth Year Hampton boys spend their lunchtimes, once a week, at a number of local primary school helping with maths, reading and chess.

COMBINED CADET FORCE (CCF) The Hampton School CCF, comprising the Army and the Royal Air Force, welcomes pupils from Hampton High and LEH. It aims to broaden young people’s horizons through a range of challenging, adventurous and educational activities, as well as developing personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline.

WORKING WITH CHARITIES The Hampton community works with a range of local, national and international charities - from long-established international links with educational organisations in Malawi and Namibia, to our Form Charities selected every year by members of the Common Room and Hampton pupils.

MALAWI In 2019, pupils from Hampton School visited Senga Bay in Malawi, home to the Hampton School Safe Haven. The School helped to establish the Safe Haven in 2008 as a centre for orphaned and abused children. Hamptonians continue to support the centre through fund raising, and every two years, boys and staff visit and offer help where it is needed. This year, over 30 boys spent time on practical tasks such as building, painting, clearing ground, repairing playground equipment and collecting water.

FORM CHARITY Each year, Hampton pupils select a number of charities to support. During 201819, the School partnered with: local charity REACT which works to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting illnesses; national charities Dementia UK and the Motor Neurone Disease Association; and international charity Action Aid, which helps tackle issues facing women and girls living in poverty. In total, over ÂŁ12,800 was raised through Form Charity activities.

FANCY DRESS FUN RUN Among the First Year fund-raising initiatives, the summer fun run on the Hampton School fields saw an array of costumes and outfits on display.

THIRD YEAR DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT Bananas in Pyjamas was the theme for the winning team in the annual Third Year dodgeball competition which saw boys throughout the year group competing on the 3G pitch.

CHARITY QUIZZES Hamptonians raised thousands of pounds by putting their general knowledge to the test in a range of quizzes including the pupil vs staff University Challenge and the Christmas Quiz.

120 80 £68,000 ROWERS FROM THE HAMPTON AND LEH BOAT CLUB

MILES ROWED IN TWO DAYS

RAISED FOR SHOOTING STAR CHILDREN’S HOSPICES

SPONSORED RIVER ROW Hampton School and our neighbours the Shooting Star Children’s Hospices enjoy close links. In Autumn 2018, braving challenging weather conditions, the Hampton and LEH Boat Club completed a sponsored row to raise funds for the hospice. Covering 80 miles, 120 rowers raised a remarkable £68,000 for the charity.

We are delighted that the rowers took on this epic challenge in support of Shooting Star. Rowing through driving rain and strong winds, they should feel very proud of their accomplishment. Raising over £68,000 is amazing and will make a significant difference to our charity. Thank you! Georgina Brookes, Community Fundraiser at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices

YOUTH GROUP The Shooting Star Children’s Hospices Youth Club meets at Hampton School once a month. Children from Shooting Star and Hamptonians enjoy film nights, sporting activities, theatre workshops and video games sessions. It is an opportunity to socialise with other teenagers and develop friendships in a parent free zone.

Teenagers from the hospice gain confidence from establishing relationships with pupils from Hampton School, and experience activities which may not otherwise be available to them. Hampton staff are always proactive in meeting our needs to ensure inclusivity, and go above and beyond expectations to facilitate the monthly events. Alissa Colucci-Jones, Care Team Worker at the Shooting Star Children’s Hospices

THE HAMPTON INDEPENDENT/ STATE SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP

Established in 2003, the Hampton Independent/State Schools Partnership (ISSP) is a thriving link between Hampton, LEH, and five local maintained schools: Hampton High, Hollyfield School, Orleans Park School, Teddington School, and Tolworth Girls’ School. Together, we have built up a lively and varied programme of educational and co-curricular opportunities enabling pupils and teachers across the partnership to work collaboratively and to draw upon the particular strengths of each school.

18 Celebrating Partnerships 2018-19

All schools within the Hampton ISSP are invited to host events across the year, during which pupils join together for activities including the following: Mathematics, IT, Science, Design & Technology, Public Speaking, Dance, Music, and a Model United Nations Conference.

PARTNERSHIP TEACHING DAYS Pupils from our ISSP are offered a range of dedicated teaching days throughout the year. These focused events allow teachers to celebrate their subjects and are designed to challenge pupils, introducing them to exciting and inspirational lessons beyond the curriculum.

ISSP SCIENCE DAY Hampton’s annual ISSP Science Day welcomed 52 pupils from four local schools to participate in a range of exciting and interactive experiments. The event was designed to challenge pupils and offer them an insight into new topics, motivating them to explore the Science curriculum further. The budding scientists took part in a Chemistry lesson discovering how energy changes in chemical reactions, and in Physics, pupils explored upthrust in hot air balloons.

Local secondary pupils came together for a day of music-making as part of the Hampton ISSP. The musicians worked on a variety of musical pieces throughout the day ranging from the brass band to the flute group. The event culminated in a rousing concert for family and friends which included a series of ensemble performances and a full orchestral and choral rendition of Carmina Burana.

It is a privilege to work with our partnership of seven ISSP schools, as the opportunities which are offered motivate students and enhance the skills they need to succeed. Many of these learning opportunities would not be available for students with the normal curriculum offered. Barbara Rhymaun, Consultant Headteacher, Darrick Wood School

ECONOMIC IMPACT Independent schools make a hugely significant contribution to the national economy. A recent report by global forecasters Oxford Economics found that UK independent schools contribute £13.7bn to the nation’s finances, generating £4.1bn in tax revenue and supporting more than 300,000 jobs. Using the Oxford Economics model, the 2018-19 economic impact of Hampton School has been calculated as follows:

£44m

CONTRIBUTED BY THE HAMPTON SCHOOL TRUST* TO UK GDP

£14m £14m 922 SAVINGS TO THE UK TAXPAYER IN SCHOOL PLACES THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE STATE-FUNDED

OF UK TAX REVENUE GENERATED BY THE HAMPTON SCHOOL TRUST
