Appointment of Director of the Fitzwygram Foundation Hampton School Code: GAQAOA | September 2021
SB
Introduction “Being part of our School community is immensely fulfilling and the work we do through the Fitzwygram Foundation is at the very heart of Hampton distinctive ethos and values. Hampton’s Governors, along with colleagues, pupils, parents (current and former) and alumni are fully committed to the Foundation. We believe that the support, passion and resources we put into our free places provision sets Hampton apart. Offering free education to young people whose parents or careers genuinely cannot afford to make a financial contribution characterises our history, our present, and is fundamental to our future. Hampton is rightly regarded as an exceptional school; as part of our mission, we are committed to engaging as partners with the schools and community around us and to promoting opportunity and social mobility. We cherish our role in nurturing raw talent and aspiration in children from the broadest possible range of backgrounds. The Fitzwygram Foundation was set up to raise funds exclusively for Fitzwygram Scholarships, which not only cover all fees but also other educational costs such as uniform, trips and activities to enable recipients to participate fully and joyfully in School life. It is named after a local Victorian benefactor who devoted his personal fortune to educating poor children in Hampton. To ensure that the funds can be used only for this charitable purpose, the Foundation is a charity in its own right separate from the School; the funds cannot, and will not, be used for any purpose other than providing free places to pupils from financially challenged backgrounds. The award of Scholarships is subject to rigorous independent means testing to ensure maximum social benefit. We seek to increase the number of such Scholarships available at Hampton School. We refer later in this document to some of the excellent work that has been done to establish the Foundation and the very promising start made – it has met with universal approval since its inception in 2016. Fundraising for Fitzwygram 100%+ free place Scholarships is our main focus; all the funds raised are applied to Scholarships. This is an exciting opportunity for the next Director of the Fitzwygram Foundation to build on excellent groundwork and take our alumni programme, our fundraising, and our social impact to even higher levels. Our new Director will have the opportunity to play a senior role in a happy, values-driven and diverse community, which is undoubtedly high-achieving but eschews crude measures and narrow definitions of ‘success’. They will benefit from the established support of our School community and its leadership, and an excellent team of Foundation Office colleagues. The new Director will be a full-time member of Hampton’s senior leadership team (SLT) and will meet regularly with The Headmaster and SLT colleagues. We see the next 5 to 10 years as an energetic and exciting phase. Building on progress so far, the new Director will establish and implement the future strategy for the Foundation and the School. We look forward to welcoming a new Director with creativity, vision, and compelling passion for our mission and ethos. We do hope that you will enjoy learning more about us. ‘’
-Kevin Knibbs The Headmaster
-Barry Martin Chair of Trustees of the Fitzwygram Foundation

Hampton School Located in South West London, Hampton School is one of the country’s leading and most well-resourced independent schools. Hampton currently educates over 1,500 pupils aged 3-18 in a supportive and stimulating environment, where success is based upon individual and collective achievements rather than the pursuit of narrowly-defined targets. Our School is committed to welcoming a wide range of academically-minded pupils from both maintained and independent schools, and encourages every child to develop their full academic and all-round potential. Hampton believes that education is not only about acquiring knowledge and skills, but also about developing a spirit of intellectual enquiry in a caring, stimulating, and enjoyable environment. Hampton pupils are encouraged to be open-minded, tolerant, full of conviction, to have a clear sense of right and wrong, and to aim for personal success while supporting those around them with kindness. Hamptonians look after one another.

The Fitzwygram Foundation The History of Free Places at Hampton School Hampton has a long-established tradition of providing free places to boys whose families could not otherwise afford a Hampton education. Founded in 1557 thanks to a bequest by Robert Hammond, a prominent local businessman, Hampton School’s earliest benefactors were local philanthropists who used their wealth to support the education of children of poor families. Local Victorian social reformer, the Reverend FitzRoy Fitzwygram, after whom the Foundation is named, funded the opening of new schools for children from poor families in Hampton. In the 1930s and 1940s, Hampton’s Headmaster, Arthur Mason, awarded free places to boys whose families needed help with fees. From 1980, the government’s Assisted Places Scheme provided means-tested places for pupils joining at 11+ or in the Sixth Form. Since the cessation of this scheme in 1998, the School has continued to offer reduced-fee and free places. The School will continue funding from its own resources fee reductions where appropriate; and currently there are about 30 such places in the School. The School will also continue to offer completely free places as it has done since the 1930s. At present in the School there are about 60 boys on such places. However, as the School has no historic endowment funds, the number of pupils it can support with free and reduced-fee places has reached its limit. Nevertheless, the School is determined to offer more free places. Over recent years, a number of parents and alumni have generously come forward to fund such free places. So, the Fitzwygram Foundation was set up to focus our fundraising efforts. To ensure that the funds can be used only for this charitable purpose, the Foundation is a charity in its own right, separate from the School; the funds cannot and will not be used for any purpose other than providing free places to pupils from financially challenged backgrounds. We wholeheartedly believe that alumni, past and current parents, and other supporters of the School share this vision and support the Foundation and its aims.
SB Current Work and Future Goals When established in 2016 the Fitzwygram Foundation aimed to increase the number of Fitzwygram Scholarships available at Hampton School by 2025. This date was chosen as it is 50 years from 1975 when the then fully state-funded Hampton Grammar School took the hard decision to become the independent Hampton School. The early aspiration in 2016 was to attempt to provide an additional 50 Fitzwygram Scholarships. There will be an additional 12 Fitzwygram Scholars in the School in September 2021. While the pandemic has clearly had a serious impact, particularly upon meeting with prospective donors and the postponement of a number of major events, progress has certainly been made. Under the leadership of our first Director, the groundwork has been laid and much initial fundraising has taken place. The Fitzwygram Office, encompassing alumni relations and fundraising, is now fully established by the main entrance and is in all senses at the heart of the School. Alumni relations have been completely overhauled and are now a significant feature of School life. The Fitzwygram Office and its distinctive focus on funding free place Scholarships is well understood and known within and outside the School community. Significant investment has been made into the systems and in the people required to deliver a sophisticated and effective fundraising and alumni relations strategy. The Foundation’s Raiser’s Edge database has over 14,000 entries including parents, past and current, and alumni. Significant fundraising has also begun, despite the pandemic, including alumni events, friend-raising, regular giving programmes, and interest-group or year-group meetings. Several major benefactions have been made leading to the permanent endowment of Fitzwygram Scholarships. Moreover, the 1557 Club, for example, seeks to bring together School alumni, friends, and supporters to fund free places through regular giving. The experience of the Big Give in December 2020 and the Giving Day at the end of June 2021 demonstrated the universal acceptance and understanding of the case for the Fitzwygram Foundation and highlighted its widespread appeal to many; for example, the Giving Day attracting 750 donors, many of them giving for the first time raising over £225,000. The Director of the Fitzwygram Foundation will build on this groundwork by further raising the profile of the Foundation internally and externally. They will develop and grow the team, overseeing the possible appointment of extra support in alumni relations. They will improve systems and processes and – crucially – shape and deliver a fundraising and communications plan to generate income and build a wide-spread and supportive community for the future.
SB The Pupils Hampton School has extensive experience in identifying primary school boys who would flourish at Hampton. The School has time-honoured expertise in recognising prospective pupils with genuine raw talent and aspiration. This is largely achieved through the School’s extensive system of partnerships with local primary schools and its own programme of lessons at Hampton for primary school children on Saturday mornings called Lion Learning. Hampton is committed to ensuring that Fitzwygram Scholars thrive during their time at the School, and the pupils are given extensive pastoral support to ensure that they settle in well and continue to flourish. Their progress through the School is overseen by a personal Tutor and a dedicated Deputy Head. There is no discernible difference between the levels of achievement, whether academic, artistic, or sporting, between pupils receiving financial assistance and their classmates. Hampton staff and pupils are united in creating a supportive, collegial community that embraces and encourages all pupils on a completely equal footing. The School has a distinctive and cherished atmosphere of togetherness, support and mutual respect. To ensure maximum social impact, Fitzwygram Scholarships are rigorously means-tested by a third-party expert, with thorough procedures in place to ensure each Scholarship goes to a boy whose family would otherwise be unable to afford a Hampton education. As a guide, most pupils will be on free school meals or qualify for pupil premium in the state sector — the purpose of the Fitzwygram Scholarship is strictly to promote social mobility through offering the best of Hampton to boys whose parents experience financial challenge. Once admitted as a Fitzwygram Scholar, pupils receive financial assistance with uniform, transport, lunches, and co-curricular activities and trips in addition to tuition fees.
