We are committed to ensuring that a Hampton education is open to the brightest pupils, regardless of their financial background.
Offering life-changing Assistance with Fees is at the heart of the Hampton ethos and there are currently 106 boys in the School on completely Free Places and many more receive financial help with fees known as bursaries.
A bursary is a reduction in the School fees and can range from 10% to 100%. Free Places include the cost of School fees, uniform and sports kit, coach travel, lunches, co-curricular activities (e.g. Music lessons) and trips. The process for applying for a bursary and Free Place is the same and families who apply for a bursary are automatically considered for a Free Place.
Our dedicated charity, The Fitzwygram Foundation, was set up in March 2016, and works alongside the School to increase the number of free places offered to boys whose families cannot afford a Hampton education.
Bursaries are available to boys joining the School at 11+, 13+ and 16+ who are successful in our entrance assessments and who will benefit from a Hampton education including participation in the wider, co-curricular life of the School. All bursaries are ‘means-tested’ and the amount of help with fees depends on each family’s circumstances. Family assets, income, liabilities and lifestyle are all taken into consideration.
Our Admissions team are here to guide you through the process of applying for a bursary, but you may also find the information included in this booklet helpful. If you have any questions, or if there is anything you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are here to help.

INTRODUCTION TO HAMPTON I 01
WELCOME
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A BURSARY?
Any pupil who meets the School’s academic entry requirements but whose parents cannot afford the cost of the School fees.
To be considered for a Free Place or bursary, pupils must sit our entrance exam and perform sufficiently well in the written tests and at interview to gain a place at Hampton.

STEP 2: FINANCIAL APPLICATION FORM
Families who apply for a Free Place or a bursary are required to complete a confidential application form providing details of their financial circumstances including:
• Family income
• Expenditure and outgoings
• Value of the family home
• Assets (e.g. property, savings, shares)
• Family size, other dependents
• Opportunities to release capital and improve family earning capacity
Please note that discretionary spending on frequent holidays, new or luxury cars and/or investment in significant home improvements is not considered by the School to be consistent with the award of a bursary.
For further information about the criteria the School applies when considering free place and bursary awards please contact the Admissions team.
The bursary application process is online and a link to our Bursary (Fee Assistance) Portal is emailed to parents at the beginning of November prior to the entrance exam. The Portal includes guidance notes as well as an application form and enables parents to monitor the status of their application throughout the process. We strongly recommend that you allow plenty
of time to complete the application form as applications submitted after the advised closing date will not be considered.
Families are encouraged to contact the Admissions team if they have any questions regarding their application or if they require assistance completing the
application form. If you are not comfortable completing an online form, please contact the Admissions team for a paper form. Parents will be informed before the entrance exam if they do not qualify for financial assistance so that families can decide whether or not to proceed with the assessments.
STEP 3: ENTRANCE EXAM & INTERVIEW
If your son performs well in the written entrance exam he will be invited for an interview in January. You will be asked to upload a number of documents in support of your application to the Bursary Portal and we will also arrange a home visit to discuss your financial
application form. Home visits are conducted by a third-party organisation (Bursary Administration Ltd) and take place in January and early February. (Please note that a home visit is not a guarantee that a place or a bursary will be awarded).
STEP 4: AWARD DECISIONS
The results of the admissions process will be emailed to parents mid-February. If your son is offered a place, confirmation of whether or not a bursary has been awarded will be included in the letter of offer together with the percentage of fees that the bursary will cover.
Bursary awards are held throughout a pupil’s time at the School and are reviewed annually.
Parents are required to complete an online financial assessment form each year and the value of the award may be adjusted to reflect any significant changes in the family’s financial circumstances.
Please note that our bursary funds are limited and we receive many more applications than we have funds available. We regret that we are not able to support every application and priority is given to those who we believe will benefit most from a Hampton education. The number of Free Places and the value of bursaries awarded varies from year to year.
Bursary decisions are made by the Admissions Committee. When making their decisions, the Committee considers the following:
• the information provided on your financial application form and supporting documentation
• your home visit report
• your son’s ability and potential and his fit with the School (including performance in the entrance exam and at interview)
• your financial circumstances
• the financial position of the School
• other relevant factors which may impact your ability to pay (e.g. medical)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A BURSARY?
A bursary is a percentage reduction in the cost of the School tuition fees only. It is a means-tested award and the value therefore depends on a family’s financial situation and ability to pay.
WHAT DOES A FREE PLACE INCLUDE?
Free Places include the cost of the School fees, School uniform and sports kit, School coach travel, lunches, co-curricular activities (e.g. Music lessons), trips and public examination entry fees. All those who apply for a bursary are automatically considered for a Free Place.
DOES MY SON’S PERFORMANCE IN THE ENTRANCE EXAM AFFECT THE LIKELIHOOD OF HIM BEING OFFERED A BURSARY OR A FREE PLACE?
The bursary application process is separate to the admissions process; however, bursaries will only be offered to pupils who meet the academic criteria for admission to the School. We also look for evidence of good behaviour, a positive attitude to learning, academic potential and kindness to others. Where demand exceeds funds available, awards are made on the basis of the applicant’s potential and performance in the addmissions process and the benefit they will gain and contribution they will make to the wider co-curricular life of the School.
IF I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WILL MY SON’S APPLICATION BE NEGATIVELY AFFECTED?
No, applying for a bursary will not affect the likelihood of your son being awarded a place. Our admissions process is completely separate to our bursary application process. If your son meets our academic standard and we feel he would benefit from a Hampton education, he will still be offered a place regardless of whether or not he is offered financial support.
IS
A BURSARY THE SAME AS A SCHOLARSHIP?
Unlike bursaries, scholarships are not ‘means-tested’. Scholarships recognise achievement regardless of financial need. Boys may hold both a scholarship and a bursary.
CAN I APPLY FOR A BURSARY WHEN MY SON SITS THE 10+ ADVANCE PLACE EXAM?
As not all boys applying for entry at 11+ into the First Year (Year 7) sit the 10+ Advance Place exam we do not assess for a bursary until the 11+ stage. Your son may still sit the 10+ exam but he must sit the 11+ exam to be considered for a bursary (even if he is offered and you accept a place following the 10+).
HAMPTON PROVIDED ME WITH INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITIES… IT IS FAR FROM A TYPICAL SCHOOL; ITS NURTURING ATMOSPHERE ALLOWS BOYS TO WORK TOWARDS THEIR AMBITIONS.
LUKE DENT, BURSARY RECIPIENT
HAMPTON IN NUMBERS
HOW ARE BURSARY APPLICATIONS FROM SEPARATED OR DIVORCED PARENTS CONSIDERED?
In most cases, the financial circumstances of both parents will be assessed. Separated or divorced parents complete separate online forms and the information collected will not be shared with the other parent.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF MY SON HAS BEEN AWARDED A BURSARY?
If your son is offered a place you will be notified if he has been awarded a bursary at the same time. The amount of the bursary will also be confirmed at this time.
WILL THE BURSARY AWARD APPLY THROUGHOUT MY SON’S TIME AT HAMPTON?
Parents are required to complete an online form each year updating the School on their financial circumstances. The bursary award may be increased or decreased if their circumstances have significantly changed.
DOES EVERYONE KNOW WHICH BOYS AT THE SCHOOL HAVE A FREE PLACE OR ARE ON A BURSARY?
All bursaries and Free Places are treated confidentially. Only those responsible for awarding the bursary or Free Place know and it is up to each individual family if they wish to share this information. The School does, however, promote the widening of access through the provision of bursaries and Free Places. Recipients may be contacted during their final years at Hampton to share their Hampton experience and the difference their award has made in order that others can benefit from similar support.
