Hampton’s First XI have been crowned U18 English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) Champions for the second time in four years, following a stunning victory against Shrewsbury School.
An unbeaten run took them to the final at Stoke City stadium, where our players put on the performance of their lives to secure a 3-1 win in front of 700 exuberant supporters.
On behalf of the English Schools’ FA, I congratulate Hampton School on becoming ESFA U18 Schools’ Cup Champions. It is a tremendous achievement to reach and win a national final, in a competition which started with over 370 teams.

Waving Hampton scarves and in full voice, Hampton’s supporters proved to be the ‘twelfth man’ at this year’s ESFA Cup final.
Following a three-hour journey from South West London, a sea of black and yellow fans including pupils, staff, alumni and familiy members, raised the rafters at the Stoke City stadium. A smaller but no less enthusiastic contingent of Hamptonians offered their support at a live screening back in the Hammond Theatre.
Following an emphatic win, the players lifted the coveted ESFA trophy in front of hundreds of delighted fans in what was the culmination of a joyous whole-School occasion. It was a day which will last long in the memory for many Hamptonians.
AIMING HIGH!
Hamptonians were delighted to watch their prototype model rockets reach up to 1,000 feet at the East Anglian Rocketry Society launch event.
Ten Lower Sixth pupils spent nine months researching, designing, and building two mid-power model rockets, named Hampton Launch Systems 1 and 2. All their hard work came to fruition with a total of five successful rocket launches on the day.
ISI REPORT
Hampton has been judged to be excellent (the highest possible recognition) across all categories in the School’s latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report.
The ISI team found that Hamptonians’ achievements are exceptional across academic and co-curricular areas of School life. Pupils were praised for their ‘outstanding sense of service’ and for making ‘an excellent contribution to the lives of others both within school and in the wider community’.

2023 CHESS CHAMPIONS
The Hampton Chess team including: Jai Kothari (First Year); Alex Lapidus (Second Year); Anirudh Shidlagatta (Third Year); Rajat Makkar; (Fifth Year); Naavya Sharma (L6), and Henry Shard (U6), played 12 hours of chess over two days, competing with 26 other teams, to win the ECF National Schools’ Chess Championship.
GOLD AWARDS
A record 29 current and former pupils were invited to Buckingham Palace in recognition of completing their Gold DofE Award. The Hamptonians were joined by Senior Tutor Mr David Clarke who retires this term after successfully stewarding hundreds of Hamptonians through their DofE journey over the past 30 years. He commented:
“Congratulations to all! Achieving Gold is a remarkable feat which shows admirable perseverance and dedication.”

SCHOOL CAPTAINS
to our new School Captains for the 2023-24 academic year.
The pupil leadership roles go to James Abrahart, Joshua Hood, Harry McLusky, Vishal Saha, Léo Sutherby and Oscar Tejura.
The positions of School Captains, Prefects and Mentors are awarded to boys who embody the ethos of the School, act as ambassadors, and serve as role models to younger pupils.
FOND FAREWELL
Among staff leavers this year, we say goodbye to four members of staff who between them have chalked up 110 years of outstanding
Alongside his contributions to Maths and the Senior Leadership team, Hampton Chess has gone from strength to strength under the stewardship of Mr Alasdair McBay. PE and History teacher, and founder of the popular Adventure Society, Mr David Clarke has also overseen a thriving Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Mrs Elizabeth Hutchinson and Mrs Anne Ghaney, integral members of our Support Staff, have helped ensure the smooth running of the School for 24 and 22 years, respectively.

Pupils and staff celebrated the coronation of King Charles III
EUROPEAN CITIES
Lower Sixth Historians enjoyed a whistle-stop tour to some of Europe’s top cities.
In Munich, pupils explored the city on foot, taking in many sites of the Third Reich. Vienna offered Hamptonians an insight into the House of Hapsburg and life during the Cold War. In Prague, Hamptonians visited the city’s famous castle and the Museum of Communism.
WATERSPORTS
Poole Harbour was the destination for Second Year Hamptonians as they made the most of an actionpacked weekend on the water.
Pupils enjoyed a whole host of activities including sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.
PARIS
A trip to Paris offered Fourth Years invaluable language practice and the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the vibrant city.
Hosted by local families, pupils toured some of the city’s most famous landmarks including les Jardin des Tuileries and the Musée d’Orsay, as well as a day out at Disneyland.
DORSET
The First Year Adventure Society trip to the Dorset Coast was end-to-end excitement.
Activities included a clifftop hike to Corfe Castle, rock climbing, abseiling at Dancing Ledge, and a day at Dorset Adventure Park mastering balance beams, cargo nets and rope swings. Another highlight was a giant canoe trip across Poole Harbour.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD
A total of 240 Hamptonians have completed their DofE Silver and Gold expeditions since Easter. Carrying rucksacks weighing a third of their body weight, intrepid expeditioners covered miles of terrain and braved weather conditions ranging from torrential downpours to heatwaves.
Destinations included the New Forest, Snowdonia and the Lake District.
SUMMER ROCK CONCERT
Over 50 Hamptonians from First Year to Lower Sixth took part in this year’s Summer Rock Concert.
From Radiohead to Rush, Coldplay to The Kinks, a packed Hammond Theatre was treated to a range of excellent performances from bands and solo artists from across the year groups.
SUMMER CONCERT
The Summer Concert was a wonderful celebration of the musical life of the School and included over 150 musicians and choristers on the Hammond Theatre stage entertaining family and friends.
Highlights of the evening included two impressive solo performances by our Upper Sixth musicians, superbly accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra.
MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD
groups took part in a series of inspiring workshops exploring music from around the world.
Second Years brought a carnival atmosphere to School as they took part in a steel pan ensemble, while Third Years raised the roof of the Hammond Theatre enjoying an exuberant Japanese Taiko Drumming workshop.
JUNIOR SCHOOLS’ MUSIC DAY
The Music Department welcomed over 100 junior pupils from 30 partner schools for an exciting day of music making. Young musicians participated in a range of masterclasses in singing, brass, woodwind and strings. The day culminated in a celebration concert, which included a rousing rendition of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins.
SUMMER SHOW
The world’s most famous puppet was brought to life in the Lower School summer show Once Upon a Pine: The Adventures of Pinocchio.
This vibrant reimagining of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of a wooden boy learning right from wrong, transported the audience to a wonderful adventure of talking crickets, giant whales and circus skills. Bravo to all involved.
THEATRE WORKSHOP
Lower Sixth Dramatists and First Year pupils enjoyed workshops with leading theatre company, Frantic Assembly, best known for their work on major productions such as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Hamptonians made the most of the opportunity exploring physical theatre, movement and ensemble work.
ROWING
Hampton oarsmen have had a successful season on the water.
A strong first day at Henley Royal Regatta was just one of the rowing highlights this term with the First VIII winning convincingly against Abingdon School.
A total of 45 Hampton rowers competed at the National Schools’ Regatta, with the J18 Coxed 4 taking Silver, and the J16 Second VIII and J14 First Octuple securing Bronze.
TENNIS
Hamptonians played some great tennis this term. The U12s and the U15s both reached their Surrey League finals days. Hampton’s U13s, U15s and Seniors came second in their group in the Independent Schools’ League Competition with our Seniors also reaching the fourth round of the Surrey County Cup.
CROQUET CLUB
One of Hampton’s newer sports clubs has seen a surge of attendees this term.
Mallets, pegs and hoops can be found on the sports fields every Wednesday lunchtime, with pupils from across the age groups honing their attacking and defensive skills and strategies.
ATHLETICS
Congratulations to Gus Carter (U6) and Kieran BouwmeesterReid (L6) who achieved national selection for 400m Hurdles and Shot Put, respectively.
There were wins for First Year Eric Rainey (Javelin), Third Years Jack Holden and Marcus Solomon (800m and 1500m), and Alessandro Cardinale (High Jump and Hurdles) at the Richmond Borough Schools’ Athletics Championships.
At the Athletics Track & Field Regional finals, Second Year Joe Timba continued to impress with wins in the 80m Hurdles and Discus. Joe set new Borough and School records in the Hurdles as did Fourth Year Sam Moylan-Jones in the 200m race.
Congratulations also go to our Senior 4x400m relay team who broke the long-standing School record in a time of 3:37:85.
CRICKET
There have been many outstanding performances this term from Hampton’s 21 cricket teams.
The First XI secured a flurry of victories including against KCS Wimbledon, St Paul’s School, RGS Guildford, Reed’s School and Whitgift School with four bowlers Harry Gregory, William Knowles, Nat Taylor and Louis Simonds-Gooding earning their places on the honours board. Many of our younger players have also showed great promise, boding well for the future of Hampton Cricket.

JOSH KING
Talented footballer
Fifth Year Josh King played a key role in the U18 English Schools’ FA final scoring the second goal. Josh was called up to the England U16 squad and signed by Fulham Football Club.
FINLAY WISEMAN
Lower Sixth Form pupil Finlay Wiseman, a regular with the Hampton First XV and London Irish Academy, has been selected for the U18 England squad. The Hamptonian will compete in the International Series taking place in South Africa in August.
NAAVYA SHARMA
Impressive cricketer Naavya Sharma, who is a regular with the Hampton Firsts, has been called up to play for the Middlesex Second XI.
J16 COXED FOUR
Congratulations to the J16 coxed four crew Harry Forbes, George Buckingham, Zaidan Amiji, Harry Bernard and Fabien Tinsley-Roy who will race on behalf of their country in the international GB vs France match.
