LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Everybody in their life comes across a place — and that place holds a piece of their heart. The setting becomes like a person to them, almost a friend and confidant, sharing experiences and creating memories. For many of you reading these words, that place is the Hamptons.
Hamptons Social: The Summer Book is the insider guide to the East End of Long Island. The cover star of our inaugural issue is the Atlantic Ocean off the Hamptons shoreline captured by acclaimed local photographer Joanna L. Steidle. These pages are a tribute to the Hamptons in all its different facets and textures. It is created for people who already know the Hamptons and for visitors meeting the South Fork for the first time.
I wanted to create a magazine that had the feeling of a travel coffee-table book. When you perused the pages, you would be taken on an emotional journey. The images would absorb you and evoke your own vivid memories of being there.
Hamptons Social began as the Instagram page @HamptonsSocial in 2019. At that time, I felt social media was missing an account that covered the Hamptons in great detail. I jumped in following my passion to write about a place that I had a lifelong connection to — without thinking of the final goal. As I posted content over the years, the follower count grew and I could feel that I was connecting a community of people who all shared a common bond.
I brought to it my experience working in the entertainment and magazine industries, as well as my background writing three Young Adult novels for Penguin Random House.
Hamptons Social: The Summer Book is filled with insider guides to the best restaurants, farm stands, florists, beaches, hotels, lobster rolls, ice cream and froyo, museums, and children’s activities. It offers insight on how to travel in style, shop for the best swimsuits, and find the best places to drink rosé on the South Fork.
The pages celebrate some of the greatest talents and influential minds in the Hamptons. It was an honor to interview Scarlett Johansson about the launch of her new skincare line The Outset. After years of serving as the face of several luxury beauty brands, she has launched a line that reflects her own vision and values.
I want to thank our world-class brand partners for bringing our premier issue to life. Thank you to my incredible team for their dedication and inspired contributions.
We hope you will follow our Instagram page (@HamptonsSocial) to discover new content all summer long.
Here’s to a wonderful Summer 2023!

TRAVEL IN STYLE
by Una O'Brien-TaubmanMake your journey to and around the Hamptons a fun and luxurious adventure!
Whether it’s by helicopter, plane, hopper or a one-of-a-kind vehicle, here are eight ways to make the excursion as enjoyable as the destination.
Blade
Blade Air Mobility, Inc., otherwise known as Blade, has turned traveling to the Hamptons into a quick 30-minute flight that has you up in the air and back on the ground before you can even name all the Hamptons communities. Blade travels via helicopter and seaplane to Southampton, East Hampton, Montauk, Sag Harbor, and Westhampton, so simply choose your destination and you’ll be there. The Blade Hamptons experience begins and ends at one of their lounges, so you can sit back, relax, enjoy a glass of Chateau La Coste Rosé and dream of the beach you’ll be on in no time.

Pave BK
Launching in the Hamptons this summer, the revolutionary Pave BK merges the best qualities of a motorcycle with that of an ebike. The brainchild of brothers Nico and Caspar Nagel of Brooklyn-based Pave Motors, the new electric motorbike is sleek, lightweight, exhilarating to ride, and equipped with industry-first sharing technology set to disrupt the two-wheeled mobility space and create a community of riders. Visit the website for a list of Hamptons retailers.

Moke
The Moke may have begun as a military invention for the British army in the late 1950s, but it has since become a symbol of “fun in the sun.” Just look at some past riders like Brigitte Bardot, Princess Margaret, the Beach Boys, and even Jimmy Fallon. Not only will the Moke provide you with a stylish ride (you can customize it to your dream design), but it is fully electric and carbon-free. An eight-hour charge from the household outlet will get you almost 40 miles drive time, the perfect distance for a day trip around the East End!

Hampton Jollys
This is probably one of the cutest cars out there and it is literally made to fit your Hamptons beach aesthetic. The car's history began in 1957 when, having seen the Fiat 500, Gianni Agnelli decided to create a one-of-akind vehicle: a 500 for the beach, because who wouldn’t want this? Grace Kelly, Jackie Onassis, and even Lyndon B. Johnson certainly couldn’t resist buying one, so why should you?

Luxury Liner
The Hampton Luxury Liner started in 2000 and over a decade later continues to offer luxury rides to and from the Hamptons. With limited stops, comfortable, leather reclining seats, extra leg room, and outlets with every seat, this is definitely one of the most comfortable ways to make your commute out East.

Gotham Dream Cars
For those of you who prefer renting a car to head out East, you may have already heard of Gotham Dream Cars. If not, like the name implies, they will literally make your driving dreams come true. The company allows you to rent the car you’ve always wanted, but perhaps haven’t had a chance to purchase yet. From Aston Martins to Lamborghinis to Ferraris, this place has them all. For an extra cost, they will tow the vehicle out to the Hamptons and then haul it back when you’re done.

THE BEST BEACHES IN THE HAMPTONS TO SWIM, SURF & PLAY
by Nancy KaneThe Hamptons have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A trip to the East End is not complete without experiencing the coastline’s raw beauty, expansive views, and pristine white sand. But navigating the Town and Village beaches takes a moment of consideration. Permits are required and local police are vigilant so it’s wise to check which beach will offer daily parking and which are better to bike to.
So grab a towel and your favorite beach chair and come see what makes the Hamptons beaches some of the most beautiful in the country.
Coopers Beach by Danielle Franz / Mix Media PlusMontauk
Montauk is called “The End” for its remote location at the easternmost tip of Long Island. The breaks here make Montauk a draw for surfers who flock to beaches like Ditch Plains (18 Ditch Plains Road), which offers a snack shack serving up healthy wraps and salads. Kirk Park (95 South Emerson Avenue) offers daily parking, a food truck and restrooms and is right behind the IGA in the village and South Edison Beach (South Edison Street) and Gin Beach (East Lake Drive) are great bay beach spots for swimming and sailboat watching.
East Hampton
If you’re seeking a quiet rendezvous, Egypt Beach (55 Old Beach Lane) and Georgica (219 Lily Pond Lane) are off the beaten path; most folks head to Main Beach (104 Ocean Avenue) where it’s not uncommon to see the Parker-Brodericks and their kids enjoying the sun. A concession stand and bathrooms and showers make things easy, especially with kids. Two Mile Hollow (50 Two Mile Hollow Road) and Wiborg (74 Highway, behind the pond) are also good options but bring your own snacks and beverages and get there early as parking is scarce.
Town beaches in Amagansett include Indian Wells (Indian Wells Highway), Atlantic Avenue (Atlantic Avenue) and Albert's Landing bay beach (Albert’s Landing Road), which is known as “Big Albert’s” and is a great bay beach to learn to swim or get in your laps.
Southampton
Coopers Beach (268 Meadow Lane) is an award-winning beautiful beach offering day passes and ample parking. This year, the concession stand is being run by the folks behind local favorite restaurant Shippy’s, so expect menu items that go beyond greasy burgers and fries.
Village beaches such as Little Plains, Main, Old Town, Halsey Neck, Wyandanch and Cryder – a gathering spot for Europeans, one beachgoer claims you never hear English chatter on this beach – are all great options if you don’t need snacks throughout the day.
Bordering Water Mill, W. Scott Cameron (or Flying Point) Beach (435 Dune Road) is where the ocean meets the bay, and usually has a food truck for snacks and drinks and chair and umbrella rentals. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
SUNFLOW: THE SUMMER’S BEST SEAT ON THE BEACH
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsSunflow’s stylish beach chair offers an innovative design and all the accessories you need for a luxurious, carefree, day by the ocean. Co-founder Leslie Hsu gave Hamptons Social the details on the brand’s exciting summer events and a behind the scenes look at pitching on Shark Tank
What does Sunflow have planned for this summer in the Hamptons?
We are excited to participate in The Surf Thing along with Whalebone at Ditch Plains Beach on June 17. We will also be available at The Bone Yard in Montauk from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We are popping up at Soul Cycle June 24-25 and we are creating an amazing chair in collaboration with Shoshanna!
What was it like for you preparing for and filming Shark Tank?
It was thrilling and exciting. Greg [Besner] and I practiced our pitch for a LONG time to get ready to go into the Tank, but nothing can really prepare you for the hot seat. We are so proud of Sunflow, so having a chance to present it to such accomplished entrepreneurs on a show we have always loved was so surreal.
What are some of Sunflow’s newest introductions?
We are introducing The High Tide Beach Bundle. It sits higher off the sand than our original Sunflow Chair and has traditional arm rests, two things that our customers have been asking for since our launch in 2020. We will also offer a waterproof speaker and I am working on a few other surprises for Summer 2024.
How did you come up with the idea for Sunflow?
I was sitting on the beach with my husband Greg, the cofounder of Sunflow, during the summer of 2017 when I realized that there had to be a better way to get settled on the beach. We are beach lovers, but always dreaded the journey to get all the clunky gear we needed there. setettled
on the beach. We are beach lovers, but always dreaded the journey to get all the clunky gear we needed there. I decided I was going to set out to create exactly what I wanted to make our beach days even happier.
What are some of your favorite beaches in the Hamptons?
I love the ocean beaches and the bay beaches, but if pushed for a favorite, it would be Two Mile Hollow. Really, every beach is my favorite.

How Her Extreme Passion for Surfing
Montauk Inspired Her Swim & Surf Line
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsAcclaimed fashion designer Cynthia Rowley holds strong ties to the Hamptons and a deep passion for surfing the waves that rise and fall off the shores of Montauk. Her connection to the ocean and love for the end of Long Island’s South Fork inspired her beautiful new swim and surf gear line. The collection of wetsuits and surfboards is perfect for enjoying a day of fun-in-the-sun or exploring the beach. Each surfboard is made to order and handcrafted by Jeff “Doc” Lausch at Surf Prescriptions in Huntington Beach, California, and features signature Cynthia Rowley floral prints.
Hamptons Social interviewed Cynthia Rowley about the moment she was inspired to start surfing in Montauk, what life lesson she would pass on to her daughters, and her insider guide to the Hamptons.
What inspired you to create your new surf and swim line?
I live in the water! Love the beach and every sport, so it was natural to want some cool surf and swim-to-wear. No one was making beautiful, fully functional wetsuits, so we had to figure out a way to translate our collection’s aesthetic onto sustainable neoprene, water-based glue and recycled materials.
Could you tell us more about your connection to Montauk and take us back to the first day you went surfing?
I bought my first house — a little shack in Montauk — in 1999. It’s the most magical place on earth. When I bought the little shack, a surfer friend said, “You can’t have this place on the best break, and not surf.” So, he took me out and that day changed my life. I always say I’m a much better designer than I am a surfer, but my passion for both is extreme.
What are your favorite memories of surfing in Montauk?
The surf in Montauk is pretty unpredictable. It can be blown out or flat, and the next day huge and scary, but that’s what it’s all about. Being at the mercy and glory of Mother Nature. It’s always special, but my best memories are just being with all my friends, catching little rollers and telling funny stories, and just hanging out.
What do you love about having a boutique in Montauk?
Having a shop, especially in Montauk, is so nice. It’s very chill and I come and talk to people to learn and be inspired. We started a new way of working to create a more sustainable business, so we make smaller quantities and replenish as things sell out so there is no waste.
What is a life lesson you learned from being an accomplished fashion designer that you would like to pass on to your daughters?
Don’t do it! Kidding. They are very self-motivated kids, and I support and love and encourage them to figure out their passion and go for it. I work very, very hard, and they see that and know that’s what it takes. That’s the best I can do for them.

A RACETRACK REBORN
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsRACETRACK
Robert Rubin Takes Us Inside the Bridge
In 1980, Robert Rubin parked his Ferrari outside The Candy Kitchen on Main Street in Bridgehampton. “Someone asked me if I was going to the Ferrari Club,” said Rubin. “I said, ‘No, where’s that?’ He said, ‘At The Bridge.’ I said, ‘What’s that?’ The rest, as they say, is history. The track was in danger of being developed as a 115-lot cluster subdivision and my white knight tendencies kicked right in.” Rubin purchased The Bridge racetrack in 1981. It wouldn’t be the last time he saved the property from development.
The Bridgehampton Racing Circuit was one of the most intimidating American racetracks during the Golden Age of the sport in the 1950s and ‘60s. International Motorsports Hall of Famer Stirling Moss called it the “most challenging course in America.”
Paul Newman drove around the track with Mario Andretti in 1967 and then kissed the ground and thanked his Maker for surviving.
Rubin kept the circuit running for more than ten years until the business was no longer sustainable. He needed an exit strategy that didn’t involve desecrating the property with a cluster subdivision. “Someone suggested a golf course . . . and I thought that was an elegant, low impact outcome for a property I had grown quite attached to,” Rubin said.
Rubin launched The Bridge, a private 7,300-yard Rees Jones-designed course with jaw-dropping views of Shelter Island and Sag Harbor. This majestic landscape is now the setting for the greatest car experience on earth — The Bridge. In 2016, Rubin founded the event with ultra-luxury PR powerhouse Shamin Abas and lawyer and vintage race car aficionado Jeffrey Einhorn.
Aticket to the event is hard to come by.
“The event is by invitation only, and that allows us to ensure that everyone there has been specially invited by us, or by one of our brand partners, because of their appreciation and passion for cars. You can feel that in the air on the day,” said Abas.
While cars are the main attraction at The Bridge, the exclusive celebration is enhanced by what Abas calls “wow factors,” or “experiences that leave the guest feeling euphoric.”
“The event is affectionally referred to as ‘the World’s Best Garden Party’ because it truly feels that way,” said Abas. “Everyone who has ever attended The Bridge will also tell you that the elevated food and drink experience is over the top! Each year we visit Smorgasburg in Brooklyn and select the best-of-the-best food vendors for The Bridge to pair with the premium wine and specialty cocktails that are served.”
While Einhorn is an accomplished car judge, there is no judging or awards at The Bridge. “When Bob, Shamin and I came up with The Bridge, we were — and remain — much more focused on hospitality than competition. We want our guests to have a stress-free good time. All of our cars are judged and evaluated when owners apply. It’s a binary system: it’s in or it’s out. And once you are in, there is no need to worry about the men with hats and clipboards judging your pride and joy.”
The exhibition’s thoughtful design and intricate layouts focus on groupings of cars. “My favorite grouping was our display of mint green Porsches in 2022. And we already have plans to top that for 2023,” said Einhorn. The Bridge VII will take place on September 23 at the Rees Jonesdesigned golf course.
When attending the one-of-a-kind event, Rubin is always struck most by seeing cars he used to own. “For example, the proud new owner of the 1909 Tipo Fenc Isotta Fraschini that I owned 30 years ago sought me out. I have a cool photo of me driving it down the straightaway sometime in the 1990s,” he said. “I was also thrilled to see Aaron Hsu’s perfectly restored and set-up 250 GTO. I sold mine more than 30 years ago!”
He also likes seeing cars that have been “reworked” by artists like The Robert Morris and Daniel Arsham Porsches. “This year, we’ll be exhibiting a couple of Bugatti-themed automotive artworks, one based on the T-59, the other on the T-35.”
The Bridge is also a charity event, benefitting The Bridge Golf Foundation & Learning Center, of which Rubin is the co-executive director with his wife Stéphane Samuel. The Harlembased foundation offers a year-round, multi-year golfbased academic and character education program for young men of color. Rubin said, “BGF is making a real difference in the college and professional trajectories of dozens of [these] young men who would otherwise be lost in the capitalist shuffle.”
While The Bridge event is invite-only, the general public is invited to attend the “Cars and Coffee” event that takes place the same weekend, at The Bridgehampton Museum on September 24 from 9 to 11 AM.
“After our first Bridge in 2016, it became apparent that we needed another event that was open to the public and where many of the cars from our invite-only event could be seen. It was a no-brainer really, and enthusiasts have flocked to it (and our newly created Bridge at Topping Rose for Sunday brunch) ever since,” said Einhorn. The Topping Rose House event will be held on September 24 as well, from 11 AM to 2 PM.
“The event is by invitation only, and that allows us to ensure that everyone there has been specially invited by us. . . because of their appreciation and passion for cars.”
“The event is affectionately referred to as ‘the World’s Best Garden Party’ because it truly feels that way,” said Abas.

MEET THE FOUNDERS OF THE MOST CELEBRATED TEQUILA IN THE WORLD
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsTequila Enemigo was born out of a desire to push boundaries and challenge the perceptions of Tequila. Since the luxury brand was launched in 2019 by two young Brits, Tequila Enemigo has won more top taste awards and consistently received some of the highest ratings available all over the world. Now, the celebrated Tequila is joining forces with MadaLuxe Group, the largest distributor of luxury fashion in the U.S., to launch a new joint venture — MadaLuxe Spirits. Hamptons Social spoke with Tequila Enemigo’s co-founders Robin Clough and Max Davies-Gilbert about the brand’s presence in the Hamptons this summer, their new partnership with MadaLuxe, and why they encourage drinking Tequila Enemigo out of a Champagne flute.
Can you tell us about Tequila Enemigo’s presence in the Hamptons this summer?
ROBIN CLOUGH: We launched in the Hamptons back in 2019 and both the team and the brand loved our time out here. The Hamptons is a very happy place for Enemigo and we’re extremely excited to make it a priority for us this summer. We’ll be available at the majority of good liquor stores and select on-premise locations, and we’re looking forward to introducing even more people to our brand.
What can you tell us about your exciting new partnership with MadaLuxe?
MAX DAVIES-GILBERT: We’re thrilled to be partnering with MadaLuxe Group to launch MadaLuxe Spirits. Enemigo was this new company’s first acquisition. Together, we’re going to make waves in the luxury liquor industry by building an impressive portfolio of highquality and exclusive spirits. It’s a really exciting time!
What’s the meaning behind your eye-catching logo for Tequila Enemigo?
CLOUGH: Our logo has a secret society vibe to it, reflecting our mission to change perceptions of Tequila. We wanted to celebrate the three founders with a triangle, which also represents balance and the three sides of the production process.
Can you tell us more about the unique process for creating Tequila Enemigo?
DAVIES-GILBERT: Tequila Enemigo is made using 100% Blue Weber Agave, which is harvested by hand and then put through one of the most environmentally friendly processes possible in the industry. To get our unique flavor profile we use a proprietary blend of yeasts for fermentation and age our Tequila in carefully selected new American-Oak barrels.
CLOUGH: Our Añejo Cristalino (named 89 as a tribute to the 89 iterations over 4 years to get to our awardwinning finale) is then removed after a year and filtered through charcoal and cellulose to remove the color and make the flavor even smoother. Our Extra Añejo continues to rest for a further two years before being bottled at its finest point, and thus named ‘00’ as it was flawless from the first batch.
You encourage drinking Tequila Enemigo out of a Champagne flute. Why is that?
DAVIES-GILBERT: We encourage drinking Tequila Enemigo out of a champagne flute because it allows you to savor the aroma and flavor of the Tequila, much like you would with a fine Champagne. It’s also a nod to the idea that Tequila should be savored, sipped and celebrated.

ROSÉ ALL DAY WITH JON BON JOVI & JESSE BONGIOVI
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsRosé season is here and award-winning music icon Jon Bon Jovi and son Jesse Bongiovi are ready to celebrate with their acclaimed premium wine label Hampton Water. The father-and-son duo joined forces with Ali Thomas and famed French winemaker Gerard Bertrand to create a fresh and lively rosé that has earned 90 points from Wine Spectator for four consecutive years. Made from grapes sourced from the best terroirs of Languedoc, the 2022 vintage’s launch coincides with the brand’s fifth anniversary.
Jesse spoke to Hamptons Social about Hampton Water’s exciting plans for the summer season and his insider guide to the East End.
What are you looking forward to this summer in the Hamptons?
I feel like the last few years have been a little wonky out in the Hamptons, between the pandemic and the prices of houses being totally insane. I feel like this year things are finally back to normal, and everyone I have been talking to is ready to get this thing going! Memorial Day is going to be one for the history books.
What can you tell us about Hampton Water’s 2022 vintage rosé?
This is our best vintage yet. Gerard, our winemaker, has been so excited for the last few months because the south of France had amazing growing weather this season and it shows in the 2022 vintage. It is going to be rolled out everywhere in the coming weeks and people are going to be in for a real treat that will last all summer long!
What is your favorite place to drink rosé in the Hamptons?
My pool? That or the beach. Georgica to be specific.
Favorite restaurant for a celebratory dinner:
The Surf Lodge in Montauk.
Favorite place to hear live music:
The [Stephen] Talkhouse.
Favorite bar: I also love taking a boat to Claudio’s in Greenport. The combo of a boat day that is sandwiched around an incredible lunch is hard to beat.
Favorite brunch spot:
My deep cut is definitely Lunch, on 27. They have these fried clam strips that are a highlight of my summer and the whole menu is a rosé drinkers dream.

THE AWARD-WINNING GARDENS OF FREDERICO AZEVEDO
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsFrederico Azevedo Transforms Landscapes into Art
Frederico Azevedo, award-winning designer and founder of the landscaping design firm and concept store Unlimited Earth Care, is known for his unique color palettes, dramatic curving floral borders and pollinator-friendly meadows. This year marks the Bridgehampton business’s 30th anniversary.
Azevedo’s design philosophy begins with color. “Color is a powerful element of natural beauty; it fuels the incredible emotions that flowers and trees create in us, and carefully constructing palettes that inspire and heighten these moods has become a signature of my work,” he said.
“There is so much energy in say, clusters of golden blooms alongside glowing oranges tempered by delicate sage greens, or overflowing masses of purple and blue-hued hydrangeas,” said Azevedo.
He incorporates a wide selection of native and well-adapted plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and herbs into his compositions. Some of his favorites include Shasta daisies, Agastache, coreopsis, achillea, Carex grasses, verbena bonariensis, seeded wheat, white oak trees and flowering dogwood trees.
While his landscaping has been compared to paintings, he is actually more inspired by animation. “Gardens move in the wind and look different throughout the day and of course in different seasons, so I’ve always been inspired by the moving color palettes of animation. Like cinematic animation, a garden is a whole story,” he said.
Azevedo believes a beautiful garden has to be a healthy one, so for every color combination that he creates he also considers whether the plants live symbiotically with one another, whether a certain tree could help shade them, or whether he can incorporate more textures in a way that naturally discourages nibbling rabbits.
“I also create views from different points in the garden and from the house. I plant strategically, altering the landscape with grand evergreens and building depth at the edges of the property to make large lawns feel intimate, or tweaked to make smaller properties feel more open. My philosophy is to consider the elements of the garden — stone, water, trees and flowers — as their own performers without losing sight of the way they need to connect in the final design,” he said.
Azevedo believes that upon completion of an installation, the design has only just begun. He finds the relationships he builds with clients fulfilling. “I love to hear from clients who just caught their new cherry tree in peak bloom for the first time, or who visit me at the Garden Concept Store to find furniture for their new favorite spot in their garden where the butterflies visit,” he said.
His design aesthetic is encapsulated in his coffee-table book, Bloom: The Luminous Gardens of Frederico Azevedo, published by Pointed Leaf Press. It is divided into the elements of natural design by chapter — Stone, Water, Blooms — which gave him the chance to consider and explain his design approach in a more individual way. While sold out online, the book is available for sale at his Garden Design Shop.
Azevedo’s firm has expanded significantly with the opening of the Garden Concept Store, which features artisanal outdoor furniture, sustainable planters, lights, and other garden accessories that follow the Unlimited Earth Care aesthetic. The most recent addition, the Garden Market, carries a curated selection of native and well-adapted plants and flowers.
To celebrate Unlimited Earth Care’s anniversary, Azevedo is hosting a party on Saturday, June 17 at the Garden Market at 2249 Scuttle Hole Road in Bridgehampton from 5 to 7 PM.
“Everyone is invited to join Unlimited Earth Care in celebrating with flowers, good music, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres,” Azevedo said. “It’s a big anniversary, and we’re looking forward to dancing and clinking glasses amongst the flowers. Butterflies and hummingbirds usually make an appearance as well.”

SCARLETT JOHANSSON
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsScarlett Johansson on her starring role as founder of The Outset and launching her beauty line in the Hamptons
Hamptons Social about her favorite products from The Outset to use in the Hamptons.
“I have such fond memories of spending summers in the Hamptons. It’s so freeing to spend time outdoors and truly enjoy nature. But after being in the sun all day, my skin craves hydration so our products make it easy to save my skin. I would highly recommend our Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum — pop it in the fridge for a super cooling hydration boost when you’re back from the beach,” said Johannson. Lengyel has her own favorite product to use when spending time in the Hamptons. “I love using our new Purifying Blue Clay Mask after a long day in the sun to detox my skin and give me a little ‘me-time’ at the end of the day,” she said.
This summer, The Outset is debuting in the Hamptons at Onda Beauty. The clean beauty spa has locations on Main Street in Sag Harbor and at Canoe Place inn in Hampton Bays.
“We’re so excited to be launching with Onda this summer because we feel The Outset is such a natural fit for the Hamptons community,” said Lengyel.
While many people know Scarlett Johansson for starring in Black Widow, the Avengers franchise, Marriage Story and JoJo Rabbit, her latest role is a part she created for herself — Co-Founder and Chair of a new clean beauty brand called The Outset.
After years of serving as the face of several luxury beauty brands, Johansson decided to step back from endorsements and immerse herself in the business of beauty. Her goal was to develop her own product line that reflected her vision and values, but more importantly, answered unmet consumer needs.
After five years of educating herself on the industry, formulations, product development and brand identity, Johansson partnered with the brand’s CoFounder and CEO, Kate Foster Lengyel, an entrepreneur and beauty/fashion executive. Lengyel describes her relationship with Johansson as a true professional highlight and says they complement each other in different ways.
With a home in Amagansett, Johansson has a close relationship to the South Fork of Long Island. She spoke to
Johansson has spoken openly about her ongoing struggle to achieve a clear and healthy complexion while being in the spotlight and under public scrutiny. She believes that feeling good about yourself on the outside helps you feel better about yourself on the inside.
“The Outset was inspired by my own skincare ritual — a consistent routine of cleansing, prepping and moisturizing that keeps my skin on track and camera ready. I’ve found that great skin starts with the basics, and consumers we spoke with similarly expressed a desire to return to the essentials,” said Johansson.
The Outset’s full collection includes eight skincare products that can be used as a full regimen or paired with existing skincare. The brand excludes 2,700 potentially harmful ingredients to meet only the highest clean beauty standard and is packaged with a focus on sustainability.
On the significance of the brand’s name, Johansson said, “The Outset means a new beginning, which feels more relevant than ever at a time when we are all starting over and pressing the reset button. It’s an exciting beginning for me, as well.”
"I wanted to create and represent a brand that felt true to me, something real and intimate that others could see themselves in, too"

Recently, The Outset celebrated its one-year anniversary and the launch of the blue clarifying mask. Beauty insiders sipped on signature cocktails like “The Outset Essential” made with dill and basil-infused gin, lemon, simple syrup, and Cava Brut. A white three-tier cake was decorated with brush strokes of blue frosting matching The Outset’s purifying clay mask. Partygoers were encouraged to tape Polaroids of themselves to a huge wall and write happy birthday wishes and supportive notes. Johansson attached a photo of her blowing a kiss to the camera and wrote, “It’s important to set boundaries xx Scarlett.” It was a momentous evening for Johnson and Lengyel as they reflected on the anniversary of the brand and all they have accomplished.
Johansson told Hamptons Social , “Over the last year it’s been so gratifying to see customers enjoying and advocating for the products. They’re helping us build our business at Sephora and on our website and helping tell our story. We really feel a movement around this gentle approach to skincare is happening — and we love that it’s being led by people using the products.”

THE IDEALIZED VISIONS OF MICHAEL DWECK
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsThe first time Michael Dweck went to Montauk, he was searching for the Rolling Stones. It was 1975. “I heard they were out there. I didn’t know anything about Montauk, but I had a band. I was the drummer, my friend was a trombone player. We drove out with our instruments in the car to see if we could find the Rolling Stones and play with them.” On their search for the famous band, they happened upon Ditch Plains beach and immediately fell in love with the place.
“I saw what I guess you could call old Montauk — or my old Montauk, because I suppose everyone has their own version of a place,” the visual artist Michael Dweck said as he sat on a white couch at his art studio in the West Village. “I saw beyond the beaches and the surfers at Ditch Plains. I saw a paradisiacal enclave.” Dweck was describing the romanticized lens through which he captured the beachside community in his celebrated book The End: Montauk, N.Y.
Since the book’s publication, Dweck’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, and his photographs reside in prestigious international art collections. Dweck is known for his narrative photographic work and documentary films which have premiered at Sundance, Cannes and many more distinguished festivals. His work depicts the beauty and complexity of human life, while exploring on-going struggles between identity and adaptation within endangered societal enclaves. He has been compared to an anthropologist, understanding, appreciating, and then embedding himself within cultures.
In the early 2000s, Dweck rented a house on Reuter Place close to Ditch Plains. "The great thing about that house was it was right across from the beach. We had an open house with a shed full of surfboards, fishing rods, and kayaks.” During that summer, Dweck started to sense a shift. “Places always change, but this particular place seemed like it was changing because of the people that were coming to town, and it was happening fast,” Dweck said. He decided then and there to pick up his camera. He wanted to immortalize the raw and mythic landscape before it was changed forever by gentrification. The eyecatching book was published in 2004 with a run of five thousand copies, and that first edition sold out in three weeks. It was later revised and re-released in second and third editions, and has become a collector’s item (some signed, first edition copies sell on the secondary market for over $5,000).
Before Dweck began taking photos though, he had to get "inside.” He met with different groups of surfers to learn how open they were to being photographed and what their relationships were with each other. “Within all groups there are all sorts of things going on with relationships between girlfriends, boyfriends, the bully, the outsiders,
the insiders. You have these little groups of people and drama.” He also tried to find people who had a wild side that they hadn’t explored yet.
As with other projects, Dweck sketched storyboards. “I draw a lot of them — hundreds of them. I meet somebody and I get to understand their story, then I do really quick drawings of scenes. The storyboards help me visualize and prepare. When I am out taking pictures, I don’t have the drawings in front of me, but I remember the visuals. The storyboards are a jumping-off point, because I am always open to unexpected things. I never pose anybody. People are in a setting and then we go and whatever happens, happens — and if I’m lucky what happens is beautiful.”
When Dweck began taking photographs for what would become The End, he wasn’t interested in capturing Montauk like a typical documentarian. “I wanted to illustrate this place the way it made me feel, not the way it looked. That’s why I say it’s an idealized version. That book gives a sense of what it’s like to be young forever and what it’s like to be free. And what it’s like to feel like you belong. And I think that’s what everybody wants. To be young forever.”
Dweck shot the photographs for the book in 18 days, but it took him one year to edit and perfect the pacing and tone. “The editing of the book was really hard because I wanted the images to flow like a film, like a narrative. There was a story. A photograph had to work on its own. It had to work with the facing photograph, and it had to work in some sort of abstract sequence with different characters coming in and out.”
With his book The End: Montauk, N.Y., Dweck preserved a sense of place. Unsurprisingly, almost every location in the book is gone now. He can't think of more than 2-3 places that he photographed that are still in existence other than Shagwong, the Ditch Witch and the beaches.
“Montauk is one of these places that just feels different,” Dweck said. “You don’t have to tell a first timer they’re going somewhere special because you can get out of the car and feel it. That’s still there. Something intangible. For that matter, ineffable. You can’t explain it. You can’t erase it. That’s Montauk. That’s why developers can’t destroy it and tourists can’t tread over it. It’s a feeling you get in Ditch Plains or talking to a fisherman before a storm or staring out at the sea at sunrise. Something about the community, the natural beauty, the light, the lifestyle.”
“You don’t have to tell a first timer they’re going somewhere special because you can get out of the car and feel it .

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO SHARES HIS INSIDER GUIDE TO TUSCANY
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsIn the heart of Arezzo, Tuscany stands Salvatore Ferragamo’s Il Borro, a luxurious hotel set within a medieval village. As you enter Il Borro’s iron gates and drive down its majestic driveway lined with Cyprus trees, you are transported into a storybook world from another time. Owned by the iconic Ferragamo family, Il Borro’s five-star Tuscan oasis resides two hours outside Florence in earth rich with Medieval and Etruscan history.
Hamptons Social spoke with Salvatore Ferragamo, grandson and namesake of the iconic fashion designer, about his passion for Il Borro. “I feel very honored and proud in following all the historical and legendary families that have dominated this region since the medieval era,” Ferragamo said.
In 1993, his father, Ferruccio Ferragamo, took over Il Borro with a deep determination to restore the estate to its former glory. “The village and the main villa were in a state of neglect and our aim was to bring it back to life, whilst respecting its traditions, its atmosphere and its soul,” he said. The care and the attention he put into selecting all the materials, details and colors in order to maintain tradition stems from his life motto: “Be true to yourself,” or in this case, true to the land.
Ferragamo describes his perfect summer day on the property. “I would start by playing polo. We have our own polo team that my sister Olivia manages. Followed by a bike ride, then a nice walk in the vineyards and at the end of the day a barbeque at sunset with my family and friends and a nice glass of Il Borro wine.”
Ferragamo is consistently affected and inspired by his grandfather’s legacy. “Being named after my grandfather is a gift and an important challenge that I renew every day. It reminds me of all he believed in: family, entrepreneurial spirit, passion, curiosity, hard work and no compromises. He is the perfect example of what it’s like to accomplish a dream.”
Best Way to Start the Day:
A walk in the vineyards with our enologist and agronomist, to check out our state-of-the-art plants.
Favorite Tuscan Wine:
Our terroir is perfect for the Sangiovese production. I will suggest our Polissena 100% Sangiovese to taste the flavor of Tuscany. For special wine lovers I suggest our new Rosé Metodo Classico – made with Sangiovese fermented for forty-eight months. A unique wine in Tuscany.
Best Way to Relax and Unwind:
A polo match with the Il Borro Polo team where also my sister, Olivia and my wife, Tini are included. At the end, a grilled party during the sunset.
Best Place for Desserts:
A great pastry chef has joined our restaurants. I do not need to look around for a delicious cake.
Favorite Dish to Enjoy for a Celebration Dinner:
Il Borro is a place where any celebrations can be memorable. I’m in love with beef tartare and risotto with almonds.
Favorite Place to Watch the Sunsets:
It is Chiocci Alto. A country house with a private swimming pool on the top of the hill that can be rented to our guests. Its position dominates the Il Borro estate. Here you can enjoy the best sunset.
Favorite Places Nearby Il Borro to Visit on a Day Trip:
I’m in love with Siena, half an hour by car from Il Borro. I also enjoy San Gimignano, Arezzo and the Buriano Bridge, five minutes by car from Il Borro. That is the bridge represented by Leonardo da Vinci in the Mona Lisa background.

THE SAFARI COLLECTION
The Adventure of a Lifetime
by Lizabeth Zindel Wells Rothschild’s giraffes outside the Manor House by The Safari Collection Top: Rothschild’s giraffes visit for breakfast by The Safari Collection Bottom: Sala’s Camp in the Masai Mara by The Safari Collectionproperties owned by The Safari Collection in Kenya: Giraffe Manor and Sala’s Camp. Founded by Tanya and Mikey Carr-Hartley in 2009, The Safari Collection designs unique and unforgettable tailor-made safaris in East Africa.
Giraffe Manor, located on the outskirts of Nairobi, is an exclusive boutique hotel part of a portfolio of four luxury camps and lodges located in the most picturesque locations of Kenya, including the Maasai Mara.
At the 10-room ivy-covered lodge, guests enjoy the rare opportunity to share their holiday with a herd of resident Rothschild’s giraffes. It is dreamlike waking up and seeing their statuesque figures walking past your room in the early light. Breakfast is served in an elegant dining room with adult and baby giraffes poking their necks in the windows to greet you while you sip your coffee. The attentive staff teaches you how to feed them by holding out pellets in your hand or for the more daring —from your mouth. Expect a big lick on the face.
Lunch is served on an enchanting courtyard decorated with lily ponds, palm trees and sculptures of the resident long-necked creatures. An elegant tea with the giraffes is offered in the afternoons on the sunny terrace, followed by a gourmet dinner in the Manor House.
In the evenings, the giraffes retreat to their forest sanctuary. The Rothschild’s species of giraffe was once highly endangered, but Giraffe Manor has long been part of a breeding program that has successfully grown their numbers in the wild.
While staying at Giraffe Manor, it is highly recommended to visit the nearby Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program. At the 11 AM viewing, visitors can watch the babies enjoy their midday mud bath and milk feed, tumbling over each other in the red earth. Advanced booking required. For more details, visit sheldrickwildlifetrust.org.
Our next stop was Sala’s Camp, The Safari Collection’s sensational property in the Maasai Mara, a 55-minute flight via Safarilink. Facing Tanzania and the Northern Corridor, the camp’s prized location offers front row seats to the annual wildebeest migration. The Mara
also contains a year-round concentration of the “Big Five” and 450 bird species.
The seven luxury tented-suites at Sala’s Camp combine safari style from bygone days with understated luxury — always maintaining a connection to nature. While sleeping in the comfort of a luxury tent, it is a thrill to hear the wild sounds of the Mara at night.
The property’s gracious managers informed us about The Safari Collection’s impressive sustainability projects, which protect Kenya’s wilderness and provide health and education programs to local communities.
As Sala’s Camp resides on a private concession, guests are permitted to venture off-road during game drives, getting impressively close to animals. The guides and spotters share a passion and knowledge for the Mara that greatly enrich the safari experience. One early morning, a guide pointed out sets of lion tracks. “Looking at fresh paw prints in the morning is like reading breaking news. It tells you who came to camp while we were in slumberland,” he said. He followed the tracks with his Land Rover, looking for Sala’s pride, a group of more than fifteen lions that roam near the Sand River.
The Safari Collection’s two additional properties in Kenya include Sasaab, a Moroccan-styled lodge near Samburu National Park, with spacious suites that have their own private plunge pools, camel trekking, and excellent game viewing as well as the intimate Solio, the only guest accommodation on the incredible 45,000-acre Solio Game Reserve, the most successful private rhino-breeding reserve in Kenya.

HAMPTONS QUEEN OF DIAMONDS
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsTell us about your connection to the Hamptons.
My husband and I started coming out to the Hamptons when we graduated from college. We loved the fresh air, long beach days, nightly drives to see the sunset, and space to enjoy being outdoors!
How does the South Fork serve as a source of inspiration to you?
There is a serious sense of calm when I get off the highway and pull into Southampton. There is nothing I love more than long days outside, driving to see the sunset with our kids while we eat ice cream, and dinner parties with friends at our new home. The Hamptons give me the time and space to take a step back from work and the craziness.
Your Instagram feed photos show layered rings, bracelets and necklaces. Any expert advice on how to stack?
The rule is, there are no rules! But I personally love to mix metals and styles that have a similar but slightly different scale. My favorite stack includes our signature
Slider Bangle™, classic Pave Bangles, Wave Cuffs, and Arielle bangles, all in a mix of metal colors!
How did you decide on a rainbow theme for your Instagram feed?
Rainbow really is part of my personal brand! It’s something I’ve identified with since I was a little girl – color just makes me happy! And so many people resonate with that cheerfulness in our branding.
What is one piece of jewelry that feels meaningful to you?
The Slider Bangle™ is one of my signature designs. It’s my take on a modern charm bracelet; a bangle with charms that can be added to and changed over time. I wear one for each of my children, one with my dogs’ names, my husband’s name, and one with my wedding date. Our clients love the personalization we offer, and the Slider Bangle has become a go-to piece for customers to buy when they’re investing in their first important SG piece.
What has drawn you to work with diamonds?
Diamonds are a miracle of nature; they take billions of years to rise to the surface and then pass through so many talented and skilled hands to become the sparkly gemstones that we see in jewelry! Each natural diamond is unique, with its own pattern of inclusions and imperfections. Diamonds make the wearer feel special, and that is really the best part of my job — that I get to design and sell something that will mean so much to the wearer!

THE WHALE WHISPERER
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsSPOTTING THE WORLD’S LARGEST MAMMAL IN THE HAMPTONS
"The whales came to me," says Paul Sieswerda, Executive Director of Gotham Whale on what first drew him to studying the species. After retiring in 2009 from a long career as Curator at both the New England and NY Aquariums, Sieswerda became fascinated studying the whales that were beginning to return to New York Harbor. He founded the research organization Gotham Whale with a mission to study and educate about this rebounding Humpback Whale population.
Hamptons Social spoke to the whale research expert about why there has been an increase in whale sightings in the Hamptons, when is primetime for spotting the creatures, and how we can help protect the species.
What type of whales are we see ing in the Hamptons?
If you’re on the beach, most likely you will be seeing Humpback Whales. A little bit offshore, Fin Whales pass through, as well.
Why has there been an increase in South Fork whale sightings recently?
The waters in general have cleaned up and more and more whales are in the area around the mouth of the Hudson River. So, these whales passing by the Hamptons are likely to be observed more often, as well. They are probably feeding on the menhaden that has increased throughout the whole New York Bight.
When is primetime to see whales in the Hamptons?
July and August. Time of day is difficult to say. If they’re just moving or what we call “logging” — when they’ve had their fill of fish and are quietly resting — or traveling, you don’t see them as visibly as when they’re lunge feeding and making a big splash through the bait balls. They break the surface and it’s really a spectacular feeding behavior.
The other term is breach for when they leave the water completely. They just jump out of the water. That’s not a feeding technique. Nobody knows why they do it except maybe for the sheer joy of it.
What can we do to help protect the whales?
The more we know about their behavior — what time to expect them, areas to expect them in — then we can mitigate any kind of threats that may be injurious to them. It seems the two biggest threats they encounter are being hit by boats and large vessels — the big containers, freighters and tankers that go up and down the coastline and in and out of the area around New York.
The other thing that they succumb to sometimes is being entangled in ropes and nets that are part of the fishing industry.
a better view.
Isn’t it amazing? And then everybody gets quiet waiting for the next time it comes up and then when it does, it’s like this big exclamation of “Ooh! There it is!” I almost think it’s some kind of innate pleasure. One of the endorphins or something that gets generated when you find something.
Everybody shares the same experience, it’s great. And then when the whales actually breach, which is very unexpected, and leap — I mean this is 40 tons of animal that gets airborne — the amount of force that it takes to completely leave the water and then crash back down with a giant splash, it’s amazing.
It’s always exciting sighting a whale from a Hamptons beach. Somebody will spot one, and then almost everyone stands up and walks toward the shoreline to get
SASHA & OLI BENZ
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsSasha and Oli Benz first met at a Halloween party in Australia. Sasha was dressed as a bride from hell and Oli wore a Zorro mask. They were nineteen years old, at the time. Without realizing it a year later the girl from Sydney and the surfer boy from Noosa were reintroduced through friends and starting dating.
Fast forward 10 years and a leap between continents, Sasha and Oli established roots in Montauk with their three children — Rhythm, Baybi and Haze.
Sasha began her career as a freelance fashion stylist, contributing to magazines like Vanity Fair and Vogue Australia. After founding the popular lifestyle blog All My Friends Are Models in 2014, she became Creative Director of The Surf Lodge in Montauk.
Most recently, Sasha founded Wyld Blue, a popular boutique in Montauk with additional locations in Aspen and New York City. Sasha handpicks pieces from up-and-coming designers and pairs them with well-known luxury designer brands.
Oli, a model, artist and DJ, is famous for playing upbeat sets that include the latest electro and pop mixed with old-time classics. In 2020, he released his first single “Rhythm Romance,” followed by “Jungle Heart” in 2021. This summer, he is launching new tracks including a collaboration with synthpop band St. Lucia. Hamptons Social spoke to the power couple about their summer plans, life lessons for their children, and how they would spend a perfect day in the Hamptons.
Do you remember the first time you visited the Hamptons?
SASHA : Oli brought us out here because he’s a surfer. He follows the waves.
OLI: We had one summer in New York City and we couldn’t figure out on the weekends why it was so quiet. Our friends told us, “Everyone leaves. It gets so hot.” So, I would drive and try and find waves. Someone told me about Montauk. We came to Montauk and pulled up to Ditch Plains. I was like, “Oh my gosh. There’s a perfect little wave out front.”
SASHA : Now, we are fourteen years living here, three kids, and a home in Montauk. We took a left turn from what we expected, but this is home now.
Sasha, how would you describe your style in Montauk?
SASHA : It’s very neutral, comfortable, beach-meets-city. It’s a mixture of feeling comfortable, feeling good about what I am wearing, as well as adding a little bit of glam.
How do you use Instagram to give a glimpse into your family life?
SASHA : It is about giving a fun insight into being parents, traveling with kids, all the things that people like to see. I try not to over glamorize it. My biggest fear is that my kids are going to grow up looking at amazing pictures of unrealistic lives so we try to give a little reality to it, as well.
What is one life lesson you would like to teach your children?
SASHA : Being kind to people is a really big one. Building good relationships. I think also to appreciate what life has given them.
OLI: Both Sasha and I are different so we teach them different things, which is really nice and refreshing.
What is one moment each of you would signify as a personal triumph?
SASHA : Last year we did an in-store event in the Hamptons. At that point, I had Montauk open and we had expanded three times in the space that we were in. Aspen was open, and the West Village store had just opened. We did an event which celebrated those milestones and a designer partnership that we had worked very hard towards. So many people showed up and showed their support. I was filled with joy and tears. Everything we worked really hard towards was visible in that moment.
OLI: When you hit a milestone in your life that you never really thought you would hit —like releasing music or having a single out — it’s humbling to have the support of so many friends.
How would you describe a perfect day in the Hamptons?
SASHA : We would spend the day on the beach, hang out with the kids and our friends.
OLI: And then back to the house, jump in the pool, cook a steak on the BBQ, put sports on.
SASHA : And then maybe go see a band play at one of the venues. And then watch the sunset. The sunsets out here are really what tip the day into a perfect moment.

TOP SPAS & WORKOUT STUDIOS IN THE HAMPTONS
by Nancy KaneTERRY THOMPSON’S INSIDER GUIDE TO BUYING A HOME IN THE HAMPTONS
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsTerry Thompson, top-producing agent at Douglas Elliman, fell in love with the Hamptons when she visited the East End over twenty-five years ago. With over thirty years of experience in the Financial and Real Estate industries, Thompson capitalizes on her diversified background to guide clients seamlessly through their home purchase or sale. The award-winning real estate agent spoke with Hamptons Social about her advice for new home owners and how she earned her top reputation for closing deals in the Hamptons.
What is your advice to buyers looking to find a home in the Hamptons?
The best time to buy is now. Don’t try to time the market. Real estate is one of the best purchases you can make to build generational wealth. My advice is to find a local agent that understands your personal goals, whether you are investing for short-term gains or for long-term investment.
You’re known for being an expert at closing deals. How do you do it?
Strategic partnerships. Over the past 12 years I have interviewed and vetted local experts including bankers, attorneys, expeditors, designers and inspectors. Our local bankers ensure that our buyers are fully qualified before going to contract. My local attorney referrals understand the idiosyncrasies of our Hamptons market as related to certificates of compliance, zoning, clearing restrictions, and all aspects of the property itself. By working together, this unique team approach ensures a smooth closing process.
How do Hamptons buyers decide which town is right for them?
Each of our Hamptons towns has its own unique personality, offering buyers many choices to create their personal Lifestyle. You can be a salty dog to a socialite, there’s something for everyone here. I suggest that clients spend time in the various towns to familiarize themselves with each hamlet. Everything from community events, local arts and culture, education, and night life, are all important factors in determining which town is right for
the buyer. Whether they are searching for a vacation home or a full-time residence, my job is to understand their personal goals and guide them to their perfect experience.
What are the current Hamptons trends for new construction?
New construction homes are always in demand. The Classic Hamptons cedar shingled Traditional will never go out of style. However, in the past there was plenty of raw land to develop. Now builders need to be a bit more creative. We are seeing the trend of modern homes taking a market share more than ever before. As raw land becomes scarce, many of the builders I work with are purchasing older properties and rebuilding to offer clients their personal vision and design.
What are some of your passions outside of real estate?
I am a dog lover, and I am passionate about animal rescue. I support many local organizations including the Southampton Animal Shelter and The North Fork Animal Welfare League. Two of my favorite local nonprofit organizations, “Luv Michael” and “US Autism Homes,” founded by Dr. Lisa Liberatore, are dedicated to training, educating and employing autistic adults and improving the lives of the autistic community. It has been rewarding to work alongside these inspiring young adults.
In February 2023, a single, 800-square-foot beachfront mobile home in the Hamptons sold for $3.75 million. The trailer is located inside the private community, Montauk Shores near the surfer paradise, Ditch Plains. The real estate transaction captured international media attention and broke the record of a previous trailer in the area which sold for $1.85 million in 2022.
Hamptons Social connected with Nick Zappola, owner of Zappola Construction, who recently purchased and renovated a mobile home for his family in the same oceanfront community. Zappola is known for working with leading architects and designers on residential projects ranging from beachside cottages to large estate compounds as well as commercial properties on the East End like Sen, Sag Town, K’Pasa, and the former Wölffer restaurant, all in Sag Harbor.
What got you interested in buying and renovating a trailer in Montauk Shores?
The Montauk property wasn’t something I was looking for. Last summer, my wife spent a weekend with our kids in Montauk and came back with this idea. And me, not knowing how to rebuild a trailer, ended up building something more along the lines of a custom house on a trailer chassis. It is still a certified HUD home. I could pick it up and move it if necessary. I didn’t realize I was getting myself into a community where 600-square-foot trailers were going to sell for close to $4 million.
Can
you tell
us about the renovation process?
Thankfully, I have a great team that makes it easier for us to get [approvals]. I am a compulsive rule follower so I talked to the management and found out what I could do. I talked to the town. I got the approvals and discovered — working within the constraints of what is allowed — you can do some pretty spectacular things there. I am now building another unit for a client. In the fall, I will be starting another personal project in the community.
What are you looking forward to the most summer vacationing in your renovated trailer?
Apparently, it pops wide open on July 4th weekend. People walking around in their bathing suits, riding bicycles. I love that my kids can go down to the beach and surf. I can fish. There is a clubhouse there. There’s an open bar for adults and a pool. There’s a kiddie pool and
a playground. The place is amazing.
What are some highlights of the renovations done to your trailer?
The entire south side is doors. I added new oak paneling. A new bathroom. Everything is totally redone. New windows. New siding. I created a loft space for storage. I also put a foundation under it. All the insulation and electric is updated. I put in a big IPE deck. We are putting in awnings to cover the deck. Metal roof. It’s pretty cool.
What do you think sets Zappola Construction apart from other builders in the Hamptons?
My name has been in construction forever because I worked with my father as a kid. We’ve been on the East End, as a staple, for 30 years. I can get jobs done fast because I know the process and I know the people to bring in. I have great relationships with architects, and even realtors, because I can speak the language. I’ve built houses from the ground up. And now as a general contractor where I don’t have my tool belt on anymore, I know what I am looking at, so I can get it done and I can offer cost-saving advice to architects before the owner signs off on it.

Open your mind to the future of residential architecture. Award-winning European architect Alexander Kolbe of Design + Build firm evoDOMUS and Michael Alberti, founder of Hamptons premier construction firm FD Building, are pioneering super high end, ultraenergy efficient homes using a flexible construction method. evoDOMUS homes have a distinct European style, drawing inspiration from Bauhaus Modernism.
Prior to evoDOMUS, Kolbe had his own firm in Germany that did mostly commercial projects, and he also designed homes for a German prefab manufacturer. “Prefab has a much higher market share in Germany than here in the U.S., but it’s now taking off here,” he noted.
The acclaimed architect is ready to take on any connotations that come with modular construction. “People who aren’t really educated in this type of construction, equate that with trailers or cheap construction, which is so far from the truth. That was an initial obstacle that we had to overcome. Now people realize you can do magic. You can make the most creative structures,” he said.
Building the modular pieces inside a factory allows evoDOMUS to control the environment and the moisture content of the wood. “Our materials are protected from the elements, so everything is stored in a dry and safe place,” said Kolbe.
Their modular homes are highly customizable. “I love working with a client,” said Kolbe. “You tell me what you want. You can show us pictures. Give me some ideas of what you are trying to achieve and then we translate that in our design language.”
The entire house can be built in the factory with exception to the exterior facade. That's where the partnership with FD Building comes in. “We have developed a very deep and very thought-out partnership,” said Kolbe.
“It’s a different style in how to put these parts together. At first it was a learning process, but through their guidance, we got through it very successfully,” said Alberti.
The team first collaborated on a project in Montauk. Kolbe’s client needed a local contractor and FD was recommended. “We vetted them and it turned out like a dream marriage. We have worked together on quite a few projects now,” said Kolbe.
The modules measure up to 16 feet wide and up to 65 feet long. A large portion of the house is produced in western Pennsylvania. When completed, the separate panels get stacked side-by-side on flatbed trucks, and then travel from the factory through New York City onto Long Island and to the project’s location.
How long does it take to assemble the modules once they arrive on site? One day.
How long does it take to complete? Depending on the size of the house, it takes about six to eight months on-site to complete, compared to 16 to 24 months for a conventionally built house.
“That’s a huge advantage because time is money,” Kolbe said.
Also essential to evoDOMUS’s business model is “green home building and sustainable, healthy home creation,” said Kolbe. “We use better materials. We use better insulation so the thermal envelope performs much better than compared to a normal house. We don’t use furnaces. We try to avoid fossil fuels like the plague because burning fossil fuels is what creates climate change. We choose no VOC or low VOC paint which is very important.”
Combining sustainable materials and modern design, evoDOMUS provides value in the short-term or long-term investment of a client's home.

PRISTINE
by Lizabeth Zindel WellsThe purest vodka from Ukraine launches in the Hamptons.
When Alexander Bratslavsky immigrated to the United States from Ukraine, he set out on a quest to find an ultra premium vodka that tasted as pure as one from his homeland. When he didn’t discover a high quality bottle that fit the bill, he decided to create one of his own.
Pristine is an up-and-coming pure vodka brand made from the finest, all natural ingredients. Bottled in exquisite crystal glass from France, the ultra premium brand is launching in the Hamptons this summer. Get out your martini glasses because this vodka is so perfect you’ll want to sip it to enjoy the luxurious taste and texture.
“We are excited to be launching Pristine in the Hamptons. The Hamptons has always been the foremost audience to gravitate to high quality,” said Bratslavsky, founder and importer of Pristine.
Pristine was awarded 96 Points by James Beard Award-winning wine and food writer Anthony Dias Blue. The former editor of Food & Wine and Bon Appétit referred to the vodka as “smooth and creamy and showing hints of vanilla. Pure and elegant, this is a vodka for connoisseurs. Have it over ice.”
Bratslavsky is proud to be supporting Ukraine by sourcing and producing Pristine Vodka in-country. Additionally, a portion of sales return to Ukraine to support the front lines and the charitable organization Tera M, which provides modular homes to families in devastated areas so that people can return to begin the long task of rebuilding.
Pristine Vodka finds its roots high in the Carpathian Mountains, in the southwestern corner of Ukraine. The Carpathians are known for their pure and delicious thermal and mineral waters. Additionally, the remote
location of these mountain springs means they are untainted by man-made additives that can leach into the water table.
“Mother Nature has the best ingredients,” said Bratslavsky. “Ukraine has been known as the breadbasket of Europe’ because the fertile ‘black soil’ is a good source of minerals. The water from The Carpathians is very clean. There is the highest quality wheat. All the ingredients we use for the vodka are the best in the world.”
The name Pristine is key in expressing what Bratslavsky’s premium vodka represents. “Quality is the number one priority for me,” he said. Bratslavsky oversaw the entire process, from creating and testing the recipe to selecting the distillery. Pristine’s master distiller uses a gravity filtration system to create an all-natural distillation method. This meticulous process further enhances the texture and flavor of the vodka, bringing Pristine to the next level of purity.
Bratslavsky is eager to have people taste this pure vodka so they can enjoy the spirit of Ukraine. “Most important when you test vodka, you need to smell it. Like you do with wine. It is supposed to have a nice aroma in your nose. Then you know the vodka is clean,” he said.
With love and pride, Bratslavsky has succeeded in creating a vodka that embodies all of what makes Eastern Europe the vodka capital of the world while also giving back to his homeland.
