Social Networ ks Are Taking Over!
The Social Network Is Our Social Network by Louisa Hearn
Facebook - the social networking site that has, in the space of six short years, changed the pop-culture topography, revolutionised the way we socialise and the way we do business, all while eclipsing the success of Myspace, Bebo, and Freindster and anyone else who’d previously had a crack. Chances are you’ve got a Facebook page, and you may even know the story of how the social networking monolith came about. What we haven’t seen yet is the story of how Facebook made some Harvard students into billionaires delivered in a way that not only computer geeks will love, but anyone who is curious about the birth of the phenomena that indisputably changed the world. 'The Social Network' follows the story of unassuming geek genius and Harvard student Mark Zuckerburg (Jesse Eisenberg) who comes up with an idea to take the social experience of Harvard and turn it into a website. With two of his programmer pals on board, and his best mate Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) providing the start-up capital, Zuckerberg creates ‘The Facebook’, which thanks to some sleazy manoeuvring from Napster creator Sean Parker (brilliantly played by Justin Timberlake) becomes the social networking behemoth that we know today. But it’s not all smooth sailing – Zuckerberg’s rise to infamy is littered with multiple legal wrangles and destroyed personal relationships, including that of his best mate Eduardo. It’s a brilliant turn from
actor Jesse Eisenberg, who manages to pull off a genius who is helpless and tortured when it comes to personal relations. Not only that, but the irony (and a twinge of pity) can’t help but strike over this guy who earns a fortune off a social networking website but has very few real friends himself. The script may be more fiction than fact, but when looking at the mind-jarringly boring question of intellectual property, any dramatic flips in the storyline only enhances what the overriding theme of this film is – friendship, betrayal and the consequences of an insatiable appetite for success. The story itself flips back and forth from the past into various court proceedings, and while it takes a while to get used to the jarring jumps in time, this is when the magic of this film really starts to permeate – and that’s when you have to fight the urge to use your phone to check Facebook mid-movie.
But it will keep you very very entertained. If there’s only one film that you see in the cinema this year, this should be it.

“Once you go mainstream you lose that intimacy with your fans,” says HU student Lisa Dacres. Clearly, she does not agree with the move from underground to mainstream. Think about it. An artist like Most of the world’s favorite artists started by only being heard by a few Wiz Khalifa raps about weed, women and other things in an explicit manner people. In most cases, the talented ones make it to the top and become and mostly appeals to weed smokers. When he is underground it is okay mainstream. However, some decide to stay underground and continue to for him to do this, but if he becomes mainstream, everything he is talking please only a certain group of fans. about will be censored forcing him For instance, the greatly loved artist to rap about things he may not be as Drake started music as a side job to passionate about. Many people even like Drake’s mixtape songs better than his short track verses. His voice has become too commercial. There is the aspect of money that makes many artists want to become mainstream. Of course most artist’s dream is to make as much money as possible and still be able to produce music without censorship. “I mean I’m glad these artists are getting their shine. They need to make money,” says HU student Cam Miller. Money is a very important part of these artists careers so of course they would love to become mainstream. When it

comes to money of course many people are going to accept the fact that an artist is becoming mainstream and living out their dreams in the process. This sometimes comes with a price. Being a mainstream is also means for an artist to appeal to more people
“Usher is making that white people music. I almost dont want to listen to him!” Jaleasa Carroll than just the elite underground group that they already appeal to. Take Big Sean for instance. He too participated in a cypher during the BET Awards and is also an up and coming artist just like Wiz Khalifa. However, he was recently signed to Kanye West’s music label G.O.O.D. music. His music hasn’t been
played on the radio yet but slowly he’s becoming more mainstream. Already people discuss him and his music more wondering who this new artist is. Whether there will be a change or not is what his listeners will have to see. Will the people he already appealed to still stay faithful fans and listeners? “I don’t want Big Sean to lose his appeal,” says Briana McCann. “I want him to keep rapping about the same things. I’ll still love him.”

I almost don’t even want to listen to him,” says Jaleasa Carroll. Her friend Jon standing next her agrees as well. “I don’t like that [explicit]. That’s why I just listen to what I been listening to.”
