You are to create a newspaper story about a key event in the development of Western Canada. Maximum length 500 words.

You may select one of the following topics: 1. Describe the everyday life of a group of people in western Canada in the late 19th century (First Nations peoples, MĂŠtis, Europeans) 2. Explain the factors that led to the settlement of the Canadian West. (federal government policy of opening up the prairies for the European Settlement, protective tariffs, railroad construction) 3. Describe how treaties and the Indian Act of 1876 transformed the lifestyles of First Nations Peoples in the Canadian West 4. Describe the causes and results of the Red River Rebellion of 1869-1870 and the North West Rebellion of 1885. Include the role of key individuals and groups, e.g.(Louis Reil, Gabriel Dumont, NWMP, Thomas Scott, Big Bear, Poundmaker, General Wolseley, Catherine Schubert) 5. Explain the effects of post Confederation immigration, new wheat strains, and the Klondike gold rush on the expansion of western Canada and British Columbia. (e.g. The development of prairie towns, entry of Yukon Territory into Confederation, the growth of Dawson City) In your newspaper, you must include:

1. A variety of primary (e.g. Photographs from the period, poetry or songs written during the period, 1st hand newspaper accounts, memoirs) and secondary sources (maps, textbook, Internet sites) 2. Use appropriate language (e.g. treaties, MĂŠtis, provisional government, panning for gold, staking a claim) 3. The layout must in a newspaper format, with Titles, columns, and graphics/photos 4. You may use a computer to create your newspaper, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher. If the computer is used, you must also submit your electronic copy as well. 5. Write information IN YOUR OWN WORDS. DO NOT COPY directly from your sources. This is considered plagiarism, and you will be deducted marks. 6. Include a bibliography of all sources used. Reference your information sheet, previously given, as to the format of the bibliography. 7. TIP: Do all your research and write up BEFORE you create the final copy on the computer. Experimenting with publishing programs can use up a lot time.
