WELCOME FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR HARRY CHRISTOPHERS The 2013–2014 Season features a wealth of outstanding music. We will be stripping the cobwebs off some well-known masterpieces as well as introducing you to some works that deserve to be better known. Highlights include Bach’s Mass in B Minor, a work that showcases the Society’s virtuosity, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, for which I am delighted to welcome back my predecessor, Grant Llewellyn, and Vivaldi’s ever popular Gloria featuring our youth choruses. I am particularly looking forward to bringing you a choral programme of music by William Byrd and J.S. Bach, both of whom were very devout men—although the former lived in constant fear of persecution. We continue our path to the future and the 2015 Bicentennial celebrations by revisiting our unique heritage with Handel’s Samson—we premiered this dramatic oratorio in the US in 1845 and its revival is long overdue. Alongside special guests including Grant, Richard Egarr, and young trumpet virtuouso Alison Balsom, we will continue to showcase our own exceptional musicians, among them our electrifying concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky. At H&H we have a body of exceptional musicians, both period instrument ensemble and chorus, who revel in great music and, above all, bring the music of our heritage to life. I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts and reveling in the music with you.

ABOUT HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY Founded in 1815, the Handel and Haydn Society (H&H) is considered America’s oldest continuously performing arts organization and will celebrate its Bicentennial in 2015. Its Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus are internationally recognized in the field of Historically Informed Performance, a revelatory style that uses the instruments and techniques of the composer’s time. The mission of the Handel and Haydn Society is to enrich life and influence culture by performing Baroque and Classical music at the highest levels of artistic excellence, and by providing engaging, accessible and broadly inclusive music education and training activities. Handel and Haydn’s Karen S. and George D. Levy Educational Outreach Program fosters the knowledge and performance of music among young people by bringing vocal training to 10,000 children throughout Greater Boston, mostly in underserved communities.

2015 BICENTENNIAL: 200 YEARS OF BRINGING MUSIC TO LIFE H&H’s 2015 Bicentennial will be a celebration of the people of Boston—a reflection upon 200 years of musical innovation and education that embody the cultural heritage of the city. H&H has a rich history of introducing great works of music to America, and has been an integral part of many moments in US history. From the US premiere of Handel’s Messiah in 1818, to a performance at President Lincoln’s memorial service in 1865, to the creation of its education program in 1985, H&H has contributed to the American performance tradition. Bicentennial festivities will include a free outdoor performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, a work whose 1864 Boston premiere featured the H&H Chorus. HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY IN THE COMMUNITY Beyond the concert hall, the Handel and Haydn Society serves as an educator, community partner, and resource center, providing opportunities for audiences to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of music, as well as resources for artistic development and training. H&H reaches community members locally and nationally through a variety of programs: Lectures at Boston Public Library branches by H&H resident scholars and musicology experts. Gallery talks and chamber music performances at local museums. Apprenticeships for New England Conservatory Master’s degree in conducting candidates, including one-onone mentorship with Harry Christophers and guest conductors as well as practical experience leading H&H’s professional period ensemble.
Historically Informed Performance vocal and instrumental technique coaching for Massachusetts Institute of Technology students by H&H musicians, in-class demonstrations and performances by H&H chamber ensembles, and access to H&H rehearsals and concerts for MIT students and faculty.

KAREN S. AND GEORGE D. LEVY EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM The Handel and Haydn Society’s Karen S. and George D. Levy Educational Outreach Program provides music education to 10,000 children annually in communities throughout eastern Massachusetts. Lowell Mason, best known as the founding father of music education in American public schools, enjoyed a long association as musical editor and later as President of H&H, starting in 1820. Almost two centuries later, H&H continues to foster Mr. Mason's legacy of providing students, mainly in underserved communities, with the joys of classical music through a variety of accessible and participatory programs. 90% of program costs are subsidized by H&H to ensure total accessibility for families and schools. The Vocal Apprenticeship Program (VAP) provides talented young singers in grades 3–12 the opportunity to sing in a chorus, learn music theory, and perform with professional musicians.

The Vocal Quartet visits schools with original presentations developed to teach music history in an entertaining, age-appropriate way. Collaborative Youth Concerts bring choruses from different high schools together to perform in their home communities alongside Handel and Haydn Society musicians.
