“The ability to work with some of the finest musicians in the world and to make those well-known masterpieces feel brand new again is any conductor’s dream. We aim to create a live experience where the music can be felt throughout the hall. I hope that we are able to make a personal connection with each audience member, so you can feel every note as we do.” — HARRY CHRISTOPHERS, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friends and Supporters, Even after 203 years, the Handel and Haydn Society continues to make history. Our 2017-18 season included 10 thrilling and widely-celebrated subscription concerts, which reached record-breaking audiences. H+H’s success is made possible by you, our generous and loyal patrons and donors, indefatigable board members, sensational orchestra and chorus, and dedicated staff. This report exemplifies the enduring vibrancy of H+H, as well as the achievements made during the past season that reflect H+H’s commitment to sharing transformative experiences through Baroque and Classical music. Under Artistic Director Harry Christophers, H+H has achieved new heights of artistic accomplishment, evidenced by critical acclaim, growing community support, and an increased presence in the national classical music spotlight. We are reaching more people with our concerts: in the past year, subscriptions increased by 14%, single ticket sales increased by 17%, and overall seats sold increased by 45%. A standout from the season was our triumphant sell-out of Amadeus Live at Symphony Hall. Perhaps even more notable than the rave reviews was that 52% of the concertgoers were newcomers to H+H! We also continued to expand our reach with an acclaimed performance of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen at Tanglewood and a return to the Connecticut Early Music Festival.
W. Carl Kester CHAIRMAN
The Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program is thriving, creating educational opportunities throughout Greater Boston for thousands of students. The impact of this work is significant; many of the students we reach do not otherwise have access to in-school music programs. Because of Karen Levy’s generosity, and gifts from so many of you, our Education and Community Engagement initiatives have flourished. H+H is committed to bringing its music and resources directly to populations with limited arts access, and we partner with many local organizations to bring our music out of the concert hall and into the communities around us. In September 2017, the Board approved H+H’s new five-year strategic plan, emphasizing initiatives in the following areas: Artistic, Institutional Culture, Patrons, Learning, and Infrastructure. This plan will be our guide for the next five years as H+H focuses its efforts on increasing its relevance to all people in the Greater Boston area who are moved by great classical music. We thank the Barr Foundation for supporting this process, and TDC for serving as planning consultants. H+H extends heartfelt thanks to our patrons and donors for your continued support in championing our cause. Your generosity was crucial to making this year a success. We hope that you share our delight in the progress H+H has made this year, and we look forward to the excitement of the coming season.

2017 + 18 SEASON
MASTERFULLY PERFORMED. PASSIONATELY SHARED. In the 2017-18 season, Harry Christophers led dramatic performances including Handel’s Messiah, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, and Handel’s Hercules. In January 2018 he conducted a program of Haydn’s Symphonies Nos. 49 and 87 and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky and guest violist Max Mandel. These performances were recorded live for release on the CORO label. The subscription season featured masterworks that H+H had not performed for decades, beginning with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, marking conductor Masaaki Suzuki’s H+H debut. Aisslinn Nosky and Associate Conductor Ian Watson co-directed sold-out performances of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, and Aisslinn led a program featuring Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. Scott Allen Jarrett, Resident Conductor, Chorus, led the annual Bach Christmas program. H+H also made its first foray into the world of film accompanied by live music with three sold-out performances of Amadeus Live. Beyond the Boston stages, H+H performed Handel’s Acis and Galatea at the Connecticut Early Music Festival in June 2018. H+H also made its two annual appearances at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, performing Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos in December 2017 and an all-Brahms program in February 2018.

AMADEUS LIVE
Christopher Carlson, Kathy Weld, Jane Carlson at Tanglewood, 2017
H+H brought The Fairy Queen to NEC’s Jordan Hall, 2018
On August 9, 2017, H+H appeared at Tanglewood for the first time in 20 years, filling a gorgeous summer evening with the sounds of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen at Ozawa Hall. Harry Christophers led the H+H Orchestra and Chorus in a compelling, dramatic, and whimsical rendition of the Shakespeare-inspired work, with Harry’s daughter Antonia Christophers as narrator of the witty script. Guest soloists Matthew Brook and Robin Blaze added their deft, humorous touches to the musical proceedings.
“You’re able to ‘see’ the music. Every aspect of it is so exquisitely perfect and beautiful.” — JAMES MICHALAK H+H PATRON

“H+H displayed an unsuspecting range of dynamics, of very soft to very loud, of finely whispered undertones to impactful outward overtones. Yet, the seemingly infinite array of those in between nuances really surprised, better yet, seized rapt attention.” — THE BOSTON MUSICAL INTELLIGENCER JANUARY 29, 2018

EDUCATION + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT H+H believes that access to high-quality arts education must be universal. As a performing arts organization, H+H offers unique competencies that support and enhance the music activities in schools throughout our community to make a significant difference in the quality of arts learning.
VOCAL ARTS PROGRAM This season 185 students from 60 communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire came together for weekly choral rehearsals and musicianship classes in H+H’s Vocal Arts Program (VAP). The six VAP ensembles sang 24 concerts, including seven appearances in collaboration with the H+H Orchestra and Chorus. A highlight of the season was the Young Women’s Chamber Choir and Young Men’s Chorus performance of Handel Messiah at Symphony Hall. “Performing in the Messiah was an exciting experience that gave me insight into the world of professional singing. It was great to work so hard on something challenging (and beautiful) that yielded such a great reward, not just in the final performance, but in the process of working on it.” — Lydia McCarthy, Young Women’s Chamber Choir
HIGH SCHOOL SOLOISTS For students who show great commitment to their vocal development and the desire for further musical study, H+H partners with the New England Conservatory to offer the highly-selective High School Soloists program. The 12 young artists in this program receive merit scholarships for their VAP ensemble participation and receive weekly voice lessons, diction classes, and numerous recital and masterclass opportunities.

BOSTON SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS Across the city of Boston, H+H teaching artists engage elementary school students in building their musical skills and fostering their creativity and self-expression through in-school music instruction. This season we collaborated with the Sarah Greenwood K-8 School in Dorchester, the Michael J. Perkins Elementary School in South Boston, the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Jamaica Plain, and the Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester, teaching hundreds of students in 32 classes each week.
COLLABORATIVE YOUTH CONCERTS For 31 years, H+H has collaborated with public high school choirs to engage young musicians in the exploration of Baroque and Classical repertoire and to share it in performance with their peers, professional soloists, and the H+H Orchestra. This season, Andrew Clark conducted students from Boston, Falmouth, Laurence, Lunenburg, Lynn, Wellesley, and Yarmouth in performances of Mozart Coronation Mass and psalm settings by Haydn.
VOCAL QUARTET The Vocal Quartet gave 68 performances of “The Heroic Power of Song” this season, in 53 schools throughout the Greater Boston area, reaching nearly 10,000 students. This original 60-minute musical presentation with integrated audience participation explores the portrayal of heroes and heroism in song by examining Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt, connecting it to African-American spirituals and message songs, and introducing Roland Hayes, acclaimed African-American concert tenor who used the power of song to combat racism and open closed minds. “The Van Otterloo Family Foundation provides support for educational enterprises that demonstrate innovation in teaching and learning, target unmet educational needs, or provide exemplary educational programs. Our mission aligns perfectly with the important work that H+H is doing in Boston Public Schools to provide engaging, inclusive, and accessible music education to thousands of children every year.” — Erin Van Otterloo, The Van Otterloo Family Foundation
FIRST NIGHT JUBILEE CONCERT
MASSART PROJECT HERCULES
Reginald Mobley, Every Voice, First Church Roxbury, 2017
Regie Gibson, First Night Jubilee, Trinity Church, 2017
MassArt student Lillian Vo, Project Hercules reception, Symphony Hall, 2017
On November 5, H+H returned to First Church in Roxbury for a free concert in collaboration with the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry. Reginald Mobley led members of the Orchestra, Chorus, and Vocal Arts Program Concert Choir in the program titled Every Voice. The free performance gave voice to communities often marginalized in classical music and in our city — voices of women, youth, and the black community.
Our annual free concert with the Museum of African American History celebrating the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation took place at Trinity Church in Copley Square on December 31. The H+H Chorus performed under the direction of Scott Allen Jarrett for a standing-room-only crowd of more than 1,200 people with readings from the Proclamation by Regie Gibson.
For the past seven years, H+H has collaborated with Massachusetts College of Art and Design on an annual project wherein all junior class students in the Illustration Department create an original work in response to music on the H+H subscription season. This season’s focus was Handel Hercules, and a jury including Harry Christophers and MassArt President David Nelson selected 12 of the pieces created by students to be displayed at Symphony Hall during the H+H performances. The complete exhibit then moved to the Mayor’s Neighborhood Gallery at Boston City Hall.
H+H is also a founding participant in the Card to Culture program, a collaboration developed this year among the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, the Massachusetts Cultural Council,
and many of the Commonwealth’s cultural institutions, which offers discounted access for individuals holding EBT cards.
EDUCATION + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
EVERY VOICE
TICKET EQUITY PROGRAMS H+H welcomed 4,385 people to concerts via the Heartstrings ticket equity program this season. This initiative gives access to inspiring performances using free or significantly discounted tickets.

All of the funds raised will support a multi-faceted effort to ensure the fulfillment of the broad array of initiatives outlined in the board’s strategic plan. In the coming year, H+H will emphasize an increase in touring activities, including a performance of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Reaching a broad, global market is part of H+H’s plan to position its Orchestra and Chorus as the nation’s preeminent Classical and Baroque performing ensemble. H+H also plans additional performances throughout the greater Boston area, and will partner with other organizations (museums, history centers, colleges) to achieve similar impact. In the first several months of the challenge, more than 25 generous donors stepped forward with gifts and pledges totaling $450,000. Fundraising will continue until the entire matching requirement is met. H+H is indebted to the board members who established the challenge: Amy Anthony, Julie Cox, Willma Davis, Carl Kester, Michael Scott Morton, Rob Shapiro, David Weaver, and Kathy Weld.

2017-18 ANNUAL FUND + THE 1815 SOCIETY
THE 1815 SOCIETY The annual 1815 Society luncheon took a special turn this year as the legacy group paid tribute to the outgoing chair, Mary Nada, for her dedicated service to the Board and her leadership in the planned giving area at the Handel and Haydn Society. No one has had a greater impact in promoting legacy giving at H+H; Mary’s commitment to the growth of the program and to new member stewardship is unparalleled. The membership of the 1815 Society has increased from under 30 just five years ago to 111 as of June 2018. The Planned Giving Task Force also welcomed its new chair, Jane Carlson. Jane is a member of the Board of Overseers, and she plans to continue advocating for planned giving at H+H. Jane joined other members of the board in thanking Mary for her service. Members of the 2017-18 Task Force were: Peter Manson, vice chair, Joe Flynn, Connie Pawelczak, Bonnie Wax, Susan Weatherbie, and John Winkleman. “I didn’t fully appreciate Classical music until my early 30s when I became friendly with someone who introduced me to Baroque music. I loved it because it was rhythmic, dramatic, and ornate. It is my pleasure to support H+H to ensure that future generations can grow to love this music too.” — Greg Crisci

JUDITH RAMEIOR (1946-2018) Judith Rameior, an Overseer of H+H for nearly 30 years, had a warmth of spirit that connected her deeply to all her interests. A nature lover, Judith’s admiration of owls was well-known to all in her life. She was also passionate about music, and played both the flute and recorder. Judith’s generosity and devotion will be missed.

JOHN BIGGERS (1923-2018)
Sylvia Ferrell-Jones, beloved former President and CEO of YW Boston, was a longtime patron and subscriber, and an active member of the H+H board for five years. In the words of her friend and fellow board member Brenda Gray Reny, “Sylvia was one of those rare beings who inspired a better self in all those who had the privilege to know her. Fearless in her pursuit of social justice, diversity, and equality; generous of spirit and in friendship; humorous and yet reverent at the same time; supremely intelligent and capable of distilling complex problems into pragmatic solutions.”
Dr. John Biggers, a longtime H+H subscriber and donor, was a worldrenowned reproductive physiologist whose research spanned 70 years and three continents. As a self-taught pianist, he had a lifelong passion for music. He generously provided for H+H in his estate plans and was an early member of the 1815 Society. His dedication to and support of H+H will be deeply missed.
In addition to her academic and professional achievements, Sylvia was a passionate music lover. She sang with Back Bay Chorale, played piano and French horn, and was talented enough on the organ to fill in for occasional services at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Lexington. Sylvia will be dearly missed by her family and many friends, and her dedicated support of H+H will be long remembered.
