“Boston is known for many things – its rich history, its sports teams, its educational institutions, its hospitals and research centers, its cultural gems, its unique personality, and its role in igniting the American Revolution – to name just a few. H+H, 205 years strong, could not have a more fitting place to call home. Thank you all for being such an amazing haven for so many years, and a source of such exquisite sustenance for the mind, heart and soul. We will move forward together, as always.” — Brian Roake, H+H donor and subscriber

2018 + 19 ANNUAL REPORT
DEAR FRIENDS + SUPPORTERS, The mission of H+H is “to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul, and connect all of us with our shared humanity through transformative experiences with Baroque and Classical music.” Those experiences include performing concerts, providing music education, and engaging the community in distinctive and powerful ways. All of this is proudly united as one Handel and Haydn Society. H+H has a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Through our programs and experiences, we seek to ensure that the joy of music is accessible to all. This year we worked with consultants The Impact Seat to develop an implementation plan for DEI initiatives over the next three years. In March, H+H appointed programming consultant Reginald Mobley. Bringing to H+H his experience in addressing inequity regarding issues of race, gender, and sexuality within the classical music industry, Reggie will work to expand H+H’s repertoire to include more composers of color, to attract musicians and soloists of color, and to reach broader audiences.
W. Carl Kester
CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS 2015-2020
H+H has seen a lot through our 205 years, the longest institutional life of any performing arts organization in the country. But it isn’t just our age that makes H+H unique – what we hear all the time from our audience is a sense of connection people feel at our concerts. The music you experience at H+H is special because of the connection you have with the musicians and through them with the spirit of the music itself. This sense of connection permeates the whole organization. A great example of our connectedness is what you all did this spring when we had to cancel the remainder of our concerts and the musicians were suddenly out of work. You contributed the funds needed to fully compensate them for those lost performances. That’s just what H+H is, that generosity, commitment, and sense of community. In this time of pandemic, we all have become mindful of what is most important in our lives, what really matters. For H+H, what is most important is our “family” – you, our growing and passionate audiences and donors, our students and families, our devoted staff colleagues, our board members and all volunteers, and most especially our extraordinary musicians under the leadership of Harry Christophers, who have brought so many memorable performances. We are committed to supporting our musicians so they will be strong and ready to return to the stage.
Robert N. Shapiro
NEW CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS
While we cannot gather in person at this moment, we can connect in new and innovative ways, through digital technology. In recent months H+H has increased our investment in virtual platforms to capture and share the music with you directly in your home. There is much more to come. While we long for and look forward to the programs we love to attend in person, the virtual concert hall will also continue to welcome the growing H+H family and community. H+H extends heartfelt thanks to our patrons and donors. Your generosity was crucial in making this year a success!

2019-20 SEASON The 2019-20 season began under Artistic Director Harry Christophers’s direction with an all-Mozart program culminating in the great Mass in C Minor. That was followed by Haydn’s Symphony No. 100 and Lord Nelson Mass which was recorded live for commercial release in November 2020. Christophers’s final two programs of the season, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guest conductors Bernard Labadie (Beethoven, CPE Bach, and Mozart) and Masaaki Suzuki (Handel Messiah) made their return to the H+H stage while Kristian Bezuidenhout (CPE Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart) and Jonathan Cohen (Haydn and Beethoven) made their H+H conducting debuts. Aisslinn Nosky directed a festive Baroque Christmas at Jordan Hall. H+H performed at both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic in the same week. Other performances in the 2019-20 Season included the Bach Brandenburg Concertos at Rockport Music, in the Dominican Republic, at Harvard Business School’s Klarman Hall, and at the Gardner Museum. H+H returned to Rockport a second time in the season with a chamber version of Handel’s Messiah at First Congregational Church under the auspices of Rockport Music and led by Associate Conductor Ian Watson. With donor support, H+H continued the succession of critically acclaimed recordings for the CORO label with the December 2019 release of Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 and Harmoniemesse.
Messiah with the New York Philharmonic In December, H+H provided the chorus for five performances of Handel’s Messiah with the New York Philharmonic and conductor Harry Bicket in Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall. The loudest cheers after each performance were reserved for the H+H Chorus which brought its vibrancy, fluidity, and power to the oratorio every night.
Messiah in Music and Art In February, H+H held a pilot concert at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium showcasing Messiah in a new way. The free performance, made possible by generous donors, featured an ensemble of H+H musicians performing highlights from Handel’s masterpiece as images of visual art were projected above the stage.
“Poised and warm, its sopranos silvery and its sibilants fresh, the group was an engaging and evocative presence… a lovely mixture of intimacy and grandeur.”
“It was a very intense, emotional experience that transported me and moved me deeply. I did not expect that. It was an out of body experience.”

The COVID-19 Pandemic: Concert Halls Gone Dark
Musicians Relief Fund: Impact by the Numbers
By early March 2020, the global coronavirus pandemic had begun to impact Massachusetts. H+H closed its offices as the state rapidly shut down and large gatherings were banned. H+H’s spring subscription concerts were canceled, and donors stepped in to ensure the musicians were paid. H+H quickly launched a digital series including “musicians at home” videos, a podcast, a radio station, and archival audio and video.
Donors took up the mantle with nearly 100 donors contributing $485,000 in a span of a few weeks for the new H+H Musicians Relief Fund. Thousands of subscribers converted their tickets to donations. The total raised exceeded $800,000, enabling H+H to pay not only its musicians for the canceled concerts, but also its education program faculty and teaching artists, along with other artistic and production costs and the development of new digital content.
87 “Technology has brought us the opportunity to ‘meet’ the musicians in their homes, and experience their music in a more intimate setting. When we are able to return to the concert hall it will be like reuniting with friends. Thank you for your music and commitment!” — H+H patron “H+H musicians in normal times bring us so much joy. In these difficult times, they bring us hope with the knowledge that with our community’s support they will remain whole and play for us once again.” — Heather and Robert Keane, H+H Donors

EDUCATION + COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT H+H believes that all people should have access, at an early age, to transformative experiences with music, and that these experiences can take place anywhere – from Symphony Hall to a neighborhood church to a school classroom, online or in person.
Handel and Haydn Society Youth Choruses
High School Soloists
This season, 234 students sang in the H+H Youth Choruses, the highest participation rate ever. These singers came together from 68 communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for weekly choral rehearsals and musicianship classes. We added a new ensemble, New Voices, expanding participation in HHYC to include grade 2 and offering students who are newer to singing the opportunity to develop their skills. The Chamber Choir was also re-imagined this year as an SATB ensemble and gave their subscription concert debut on the Baroque Christmas program. At the beginning of March, our Concert Choir traveled to Rochester, New York to perform as a featured ensemble for the American Choral Director’s Association Eastern Conference. They were selected for this prestigious opportunity through a highly-competitive blind audition process, and were the only chorus from Massachusetts chosen to sing at the conference and one of only two children’s choral programs represented. Other performances of note this season include collaborations with Back Bay Chorale, Boston Musica Viva, and Boston Saengerfest.
For students who show great commitment to their vocal development and the desire for further musical study, H+H partners with the New England Conservatory to offer the highly selective High School Soloists program. These 10 young artists enjoy merit scholarships for their HHYC ensemble participation and receive weekly voice lessons, diction classes, and numerous recital and masterclass opportunities.
In response to the pandemic, all HHYC activities shifted seamlessly online in March. HHYC singers met weekly with their ensembles and musicianship classes, and also participated in a vast array of special sessions designed to support their further exploration of music, deepen their understanding of their instruments, broaden their perspective on how music can transform lives and its role in our society, and just have fun together.
“
“Technically compelling, musically assured, and expressively potent.” — Boston Classical Review, of a performance by the Chorus of Sopranos and Altos
Boston School Partnerships Across the city of Boston, H+H teaching artists engage elementary school students in building their musical skills and fostering their creativity and self-expression through weekly in-school music instruction that emphasizes the development of the singing voice. This season, we continued partnerships with Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester and the F. Lyman Winship School in Brighton.
“Music has a profound way of creating a sense of belonging and participation as well as enhancing community connections.” — Rachael Chagat, H+H teaching artist

Every Voice
MassArt Partnership
Reginald Mobley conducted members of the H+H Chorus and Orchestra in our annual Every Voice performances on November 2+3 at First Church in Roxbury and Union United Methodist Church in the South End. This year’s programming featured music by Jewish and Black composers, and celebrated what each of these communities contributes to Boston and how we are all interconnected. The Youth Choruses Concert Choir, under the direction of Jennifer Kane, also performed on the concert.
H+H continued a partnership with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design this season and delighted in exploring Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons from the perspective of the juniors in the MassArt Illustration Department. These students were introduced to the piece by HIP Fellow Teresa Neff and members of the orchestra and then created original illustrations inspired by the music. Though the cancellation of these subscription concerts due to the global pandemic prevented the anticipated jury and pre-concert gallery showing from taking place, the complete collection of student artwork can be enjoyed on the H+H website.
Emancipation Proclamation Concert Our annual concert on December 31 in collaboration with the Museum of African American History (MAAH) was a tremendous success. Scott Allen Jarrett led members of the Chorus in a stunning program inspired by music sung by H+H at the time of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Regie Gibson again shared passages from the Proclamation and Leon Wilson of MAAH set the event in its historical context. Trinity Church, Boston hosted the performance for the third consecutive year, and it drew a standing-room-only crowd of 1,200 listeners.
Ticket Equity Programs H+H welcomed 1,367 people to concerts via the Heartstrings ticket equity program this season. This initiative makes H+H’s inspiring performances accessible to students and low-income individuals through free and discounted tickets. H+H is also a founding participant in the Card to Culture program, a collaboration among the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and many of the Commonwealth’s cultural institutions, which offers discounted concert tickets for individuals holding EBT cards. 5

IN MEMORIAM Mitchell Adams (1944-2020) Mitchell Adams was Chairman of the H+H Board from 1986 to 1991, and was instrumental in bringing music director Christopher Hogwood to H+H. More recently, Mitch was the visionary and driving force behind our “Messiah in Music and Art” project, an innovative marriage of Handel’s music with great masterpieces of art. Mitch led us to a highly successful 30-minute pilot of the production in February. We hope to premiere the complete project in an upcoming season, which we will dedicate to his memory. Mitch had a distinguished career in banking, healthcare, and public service, including leadership roles at Harvard Medical School, University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, and in the administration of Governor Weld. He was also an advocate for the LGBTQ community. He and his husband Kevin Smith were one of the first gay couples to marry in the United States.
Jennifer Bemis (1952-2020) Jennifer “Jamie” Bemis was a subscriber and major donor to H+H who discovered a special passion for Baroque and Classical music following a stroke in 2011. She had a strong interest in supporting H+H’s education programs, including youth scholarships and tours. Residing in Concord with husband John, she founded Gaining Ground, a non-profit farm that grew and donated food for local food pantries. A champion of the environment, she was also chair of the Natural Resources Commission. In recent years she dedicated her efforts to philanthropy.
John F. Cogan, Jr. (1926-2020) John “Jack” Cogan, philanthropist, attorney, and investor, was a longtime H+H subscriber and generous donor. A lover of music and art, he was regularly seen at Symphony Hall concerts with his wife Mary Cornille. Jack was chairman and managing partner at Hale and Dorr (now WilmerHale) for many decades, and had a leadership role with the Pioneer Fund. His philanthropic support of cultural organizations in Boston leaves a powerful legacy.
