WELCOME TO THE SOCIETY BALL Welcome to the Handel and Haydn Society’s first-ever virtual gala! Even in times like these—especially in times like these—gathering together for an evening of music and festivity seems more important than ever, and we hope you enjoy what we have in store for you. Owing to your support, H+H has remained resilient and forward-moving in the face of this pandemic. When we closed our offices in March, followed by the cancellation of our spring concerts at Symphony Hall, our thoughts went to our cherished audience, musicians, educators, and students — and our need to remain connected. Due to this, H+H quickly launched its ongoing series of free online digital programming ranging from video and audio of past H+H performances, to livestreamed concerts and interviews with H+H musicians, to videos of our artists performing from their homes. H+H’s Summer of Beethoven online festival brought nine weeks of symphonies, concertos, choral works, and chamber music to not only celebrate the great master’s 250th birthday, but also H+H’s signature freshness and unmatched virtuosity. The professional musicians of the H+H Orchestra and Chorus have experienced the impact of canceled performances around the world and their incomes were substantially reduced. However, thanks to your generosity, H+H was able to compensate the orchestra and chorus musicians impacted by our canceled spring concerts. Moreover, as schools abruptly closed their doors for the remainder of the school year, the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program did not miss a beat. H+H Youth Chorus rehearsals and musicianship classes were moved online with student ensembles gathering virtually each week. For the fall, H+H has established flexible music education curricula based on multiple teaching scenarios (i.e. in-person, online, or a hybrid model), so that work with our educators and students is uninterrupted.

David Snead

PRESIDENT AND CEO

Harry Christophers ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

As we raise our glasses and connect from our homes for tonight’s festivities, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the dedication of those who have supported The Society Ball: A Virtual Soirée, especially the tireless efforts of the Gala Steering Committee and its leadership, and all of our sponsors and donors. While this will certainly be different from previous years, we trust that you will enjoy this communal celebration of H+H’s excellence, resilience, and momentum. We thank you for your generous support of the Handel and Haydn Society!

DID YOU KNOW? In the early years of H+H’s history, the orchestra would gather to “tune” during their rehearsals. In those days, that meant raising a glass of brandy to each other before resuming their practicing – we even have copies of their (extensive) liquor bills in the H+H Archives. While our orchestra doesn’t “tune” like that anymore, we hope you’ll join us in raising a glass tonight.

At the end of our main program, join us in celebrating all that you have helped H+H to accomplish by tossing out some confetti. Three cheers to you, our donors, for supporting H+H!

THE KAREN S. AND GEORGE D. LEVY EDUCATION PROGRAM

PHOTO: KAT WATERMAN

The Handel and Haydn Society’s Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program provides music education for children in communities throughout eastern Massachusetts, reaching thousands of students each year. H+H Youth Choruses provide talented young singers in grades 2–12 the opportunity to sing in a chorus, take musicianship classes, perform with professional musicians, and receive private voice instruction. Collaborative Youth Concerts bring choirs from Boston-area high schools together to perform alongside H+H musicians in their home communities and at Symphony Hall. School Partnerships led by H+H teaching artists bring weekly choral and music education instruction to Boston elementary school students. See the Education Program in action at handelandhaydn.org/education. H+H’s Education Program is endowed in perpetuity by Karen S. and George D. Levy. THE SOCIETY BALL

TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS Leonarda: Venite, laetantes, Op. 20, No. 12 Ardores flagrantes, Venite gaudentes, Accurrite gentes, Volate ad me.

Come, cheerful And glowing desires! Come rejoicing! Hasten to Help, Nations! Fly to me!

Ego sum vita cordium. Sum dulcis Maria. Sum vobis vera pax. Sine me non est quies; Nulla est beata sors.

I am the life of your hearts. I am sweet Mary, I am your true peace. Without me, there is not rest; There is no blessed destiny.

Qui me invenerit, Invenerit vitam, Et hauriet salutem a Domino.

Whoever shall have found me, Shall have found life, And will drink from the Lord’s cup of salvation.

Per me regnant in mundo amores. Per me animae libant dulciores. Semper cara, semper grata Sunt contenta, quae rorant a me. Per me gratiae pluunt in mundo Et delitiae sunt fecundae.

Through me Loving desires reign in the world. Through me sweeter souls pour libations. Always dear, always grateful, Whatever dew drips from me is happy. Through me graces fall like rain on the world, And delights are fruitful.

Qui sperant in me, non peribit, Sed ad ibit ad aeterna gaudia. Qui vivit in me, non plorabit, Sed regnabit in caelesti gloria. Alleluia.

Whoever hopes in me will not perish, But will enter into eternal joys. Whoever lives in me will not weep, But will reign in heavenly glory. Alleluia.

Be cheerful, my heart! at last my eager eye sees what it seeks: it’s you, my love, I see you again, my dear, I embrace you, my Shepherdess. My dear, forgive my suspicious fears – a wandering Shepherd does not oft see the full sunlight in these shadowy groves.

Aria Mi stringerai sì, sì, non partirai più no. Bella ti rapirò se il cor non cede. Avvinto al tuo bel sen ti giuro amato ben che mai ti mancherò d’amor a fede.

You’ll embrace me, yes, yes, you won’t leave, no. My beauty, I will take you away if your heart does not yield. Held fast in your lovely bosom I swear to you, my dear love, that I’ll never fail you in love or fidelity.

HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY ARTIST PROFILES Amanda Forsythe, soprano Amanda Forsythe sang Eurydice on the 2015 GRAMMY-winning recording of Charpentier’s La descente d’Orphée aux enfers. Other career highlights include Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Boston Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic), Bach Magnificat and Marzelline in Fidelio (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia), Handel’s Sileti venti, Laudate pueri, and a programme of selected arias (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Amour in Gluck’s Orphée, Mozart’s C Minor Mass and Requiem (Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists), and several roles including title role in Teseo (Philharmonia Baroque). Her opera engagements have included Nannetta (Falstaff) and Manto in Steffani’s Niobe, Jemmy (Guillaume Tell), Corinna (Il viaggio a Reims) and Rosalia (L’equivoco stravagante), Dalinda (Ariodante), Pamina (Magic Flute) and the title role in Semele. She also performs regularly in concert and on the opera stage with Apollo’s Fire, Boston Baroque, and Boston Early Music Festival, with whom she has made many recordings.

Reginald Mobley, countertenor “It must be said from the beginning that one of the joys of seeing Mobley is hearing his beautiful alto coming out of a big, tall man who looks more like a linebacker for the Miami Dolphins than the P.G. Wodehouse party guest his name might suggest.” Countertenor Reginald L. Mobley fully intended to speak his art through watercolors and oil pastels until circumstance demanded that his own voice should speak for itself. Since reducing his visual color palette to the black and white of a score, he’s endeavored to open up a wider spectrum onstage. A longtime member of twice GRAMMY® nominated ensemble Seraphic Fire, Reggie has recently appeared with Agave Baroque, Bach Collegium San Diego, Boston Early Music Festival, Monteverdi Choir & English Baroque Soloists, Pacific MusicWorks, Freiburger Barockorchester, and The Handel + Haydn Society in the ‘15/’16 season. With the latter, he had the honor of becoming the first Black person to lead H+H during its Bicentennial anniversary. Never bound by conventional countertenor repertoire, Reggie has a fair bit of non-classical work in tow. His first professional work was in Musical Theatre, and while working in Japan (as a Singer/Actor for Tokyo Disney), he performed cabaret shows of gospel, jazz, and torch songs in jazz clubs around Tokyo. And though not one to regret, Reggie has considered rediscovering his artistic roots. So if seen post concert, forego an autograph and ask for one of his self-acclaimed stick figure drawings. 14

ABOUT THE HANDEL AND HAYDN SOCIETY Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society is dedicated to performing Baroque and Classical music with a freshness, a vitality, and a creativity that inspires all ages. The fact that H+H has been captivating audiences for 205 consecutive seasons (the most of any performing arts organization in the United States), speaks to its singular success at converting new audiences to this extraordinary music, generation after generation. H+H performed the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s Messiah in its first concert in 1815, gave the American premiere in 1818, and since has been both a musical and a civic leader in the Boston community. During the Civil War, H+H gave numerous concerts in support of the Union Army (H+H member Julia Ward Howe wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) and on January 1, 1863, H+H performed at the Grand Jubilee Concert celebrating the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. Two years later, H+H performed at the memorial service for Abraham Lincoln. Today, H+H’s Orchestra and Chorus delight more than 50,000 listeners annually with a nine-week subscription series at Boston’s Symphony Hall and other leading venues. Through the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, H+H supports seven youth choirs of singers in grades 2–12, and provides thousands of complimentary tickets to students and communities throughout Boston, ensuring the joy of music is accessible to all. H+H’s numerous free community concerts include an annual commemoration of the original 1863 Emancipation Proclamation concert on December 31 of every year, in collaboration with the Museum of African American History. The artistic director of the Handel and Haydn Society is Harry Christophers, who is also founding artistic director of The Sixteen in London. Under Christophers’s leadership, H+H has released 13 CDs on the CORO label and has toured nationally and internationally. In all these ways, H+H fulfills its mission to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul, and connect us with our shared humanity through transformative experiences with Baroque and Classical music.
