A MODERN MUSICAL JOURNEY HUNDREDS OF YEARS IN THE MAKING. Standing at the forefront of the historically informed performance movement, H+H delivers audiences a unique listening experience by playing on period instruments, the kind for which the great Baroque and Classical composers wrote their masterpieces. Woodwinds are made of wood, not metal or plastic. Brass instruments have no modern valves. Strings are crafted of gut, not steel. And while the instruments make for a striking difference in the sound of the music, there are other reasons. The orchestra is smaller, 25 to 50 musicians as opposed to the 100 found in today’s conventional orchestras. Sharing the stage are 25 to 30 members of the chorus. This is just as when the music was written several centuries ago. Simply said, there is no better way to preserve the artistic intentions of history’s greatest composers. Or to showcase their musical genius. The difference in the sound is simply stunning. Masterpieces you know and love take on an entirely new life. You feel different textures. Hear subtle and graceful variations. And notice beautiful nuances. You hear things you’ve never heard before. But you hear them now. All as part of a historically informed performance by an organization that has been playing this music longer than anyone else in the country, founded when musicians like Beethoven were living, contemporary pop stars.

A MOZART CELEBRATION

MOZART JUPITER SYMPHONY

It’s Mozart at his most charming and powerful. You’ll feel his spirit as Harry Christophers, our gifted orchestra, stunning chorus, and a quartet of stellar vocalists raise the curtain on our season. Connect with some of the composer’s most engaging music, played the way he himself would have heard it: the effervescent serenade Eine kleine Nachtmusik (“A Little Night Music”), impassioned concert arias, and the solemn Great Mass with high-wire singing and a transcendent “Et incarnatus est.”

After his recent enthusiastically received H+H performances of Messiah, Bernard Labadie returns to lead Mozart’s Jupiter—named for the king of the gods—with trumpets and drums lending a fittingly regal air, freshly and authentically realized by the H+H Orchestra. Principal cello Guy Fishman solos in C.P.E. Bach’s high-spirited cello concerto, bringing its poetry to vibrant life and connecting you to its emotional landscape.

Handel’s iconic Messiah is a treasured holiday tradition that H+H is observing for a 166th consecutive year, presented by our peerless orchestra, chorus, and soloists. With critically acclaimed Baroque master Masaaki Suzuki on the podium, you’ll enjoy this masterpiece the way the composer intended, with dazzling vocal solos, spine-tingling instrumental fireworks, and some of the most glorious choral writing of all time. A BAROQUE CHRISTMAS NEC’S JORDAN HALL

MOZART + HAYDN SYMPHONY HALL

Nothing says Christmas like a beautiful package of Baroque musical jewels. Our astounding concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky directs music that will resound with vitality and joy, the cobwebs wiped away, when performed on the instruments the composers intended. Torelli’s ethereal Christmas Concerto and Biber’s joyful Mystery Sonata celebrating the birth of Jesus are jubilant music to brighten a wintery day and nourish your spirit all year long.

Experience three grand classics, alive with all the excitement and verve of their very first performances. Aisslinn Nosky stars in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 with its luminous adagio—part of H+H’s multi-year cycle of his violin concertos. Then, thrill to one of Haydn’s masterful “London” symphonies that wowed England’s capital—the smash hit Military, so-called for intense depictions of the clash of arms and ferocious roar of war. In the epic Lord Nelson Mass our magnificent chorus and soloists join the orchestra in this homage to the heroic general who vanquished Napoleon.

BEETHOVEN + MOZART NEC’S JORDAN HALL

Critically acclaimed fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout makes his H+H directorial debut in Beethoven’s dramatic Third Piano Concerto. You’ll hear the composer speak from the heart, only now in a bold new voice. Soloist and orchestra recreate this new voice with their trademark sound that’s as astonishing today as it was in the creator’s day. Taking inspiration from Haydn, Mozart also tried a new approach in his Linz symphony: a majestic introduction announces that you’re in for something grand and sweeps you along to the celebratory conclusion, accompanied by spirited drumbeats.

HAYDN + BEETHOVEN

BACH ST. MATTHEW PASSION

VIVALDI THE FOUR SEASONS

No one could carry off this triple-header better than H+H, which is dedicated to connecting you with all the freshness and energy of this music as when it was brand new. Haydn’s popular Le Matin invites you to witness night giving way to the sunrise and birds intoning their morning song. The Oxford is appropriately noble for the occasion of Haydn receiving an honorary doctorate. And, bidding farewell to the 18th century, Beethoven’s iconoclastic First Symphony steps into a future where music speaks directly to the heart.

Arguably the greatest work in Western classical music, the St. Matthew Passion reflects on the central drama of the Christian religion: the trial, suffering, and death of Jesus as a redemptive act for humankind. Bach draws upon the boundless reservoir of his genius to tell this moving story. The combined forces of the H+H Orchestra, chorus, and six soloists bring this masterpiece—with its near-operatic proportions and intensity—to life, the way it was meant to be heard. Expect a deeply moving, spiritual, and authentic musical experience.

Let’s all agree: Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of classical music’s most spectacular hits. And yet, when you hear it played “the H+H way”—in a historically informed performance on period instruments—you’ll feel like you’re hearing it for the first time…utterly fresh, sparkling, and exuberant. As soloist, Aisslinn Nosky’s virtuosity is guaranteed to dazzle. Part of the fun for you, our audience, is listening for Vivaldi’s spot-on sound effects—birds, a brook, a barking dog, gnats and flies, thunder and lightning, the chattering of teeth, and slipping on ice. This is a piece for all seasons.
