VIVALDI THE FOUR SEASONS SYMPHONY HALL
Let’s all agree: Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is one of classical music’s most spectacular hits. And yet, when you hear it played “the H+H way”—in an historically informed performance on period instruments—you’ll feel like you’re hearing it for the first time…utterly fresh, sparkling, and exuberant. As soloist and leader, Aisslinn Nosky’s virtuosity is guaranteed to dazzle. Part of the fun is listening for Vivaldi’s spot-on sound effects—birds, a brook, a barking dog, gnats and flies, thunder and lightning, the chattering of teeth, and slipping on ice. This is a piece for all seasons.
FRIDAY, OCT 8, 2021 AT 7:30PM SUNDAY, OCT 10, 2021 AT 3:00PM Aisslinn Nosky, violin and leader H+H Orchestra
BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY NO. 6, PASTORAL SYMPHONY HALL
Laurence Equilbey, star conductor of Paris’s Insula period instrument orchestra and accentus chamber choir, makes her H+H debut accompanying you into Beethoven’s pastoral landscape…with bird calls, a babbling brook, a summer storm, and merrymaking with friends. Definitely the softer side of the master! A sensation in 19th century musical Paris, admired by Berlioz and Schumann, and a champion of women’s rights, Louise Farrenc demands to be heard! The H+H premiere of her symphonic masterpiece—alive with melody and drama—will have you saying: where has she been all my life?
FRIDAY, NOV 5, 2021 AT 7:30PM SUNDAY, NOV 7, 2021 AT 3:00PM Laurence Equilbey, conductor H+H Orchestra

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, Pastoral Farrenc: Symphony No. 3
HANDEL MESSIAH SYMPHONY HALL
Harry Christophers lends his special touch to the last Messiah of his brilliant 13-year tenure as H+H’s artistic director. The masterpiece comes alive for the 168th consecutive year as the unrivaled H+H Orchestra, Chorus, and spectacular soloists perform this stirring music—played the way Handel himself would have heard it. High-wire arias, dazzling instrumental fireworks, and awe-inspiring choruses make it Boston’s must-see Messiah. “ No conductor in Boston has quite the feel for this music as Christophers.”
FRIDAY, NOV 26, 2021 AT 7:30PM SATURDAY, NOV 27, 2021 AT 3:00PM SUNDAY, NOV 28, 2021 AT 3:00PM Harry Christophers, conductor Carolyn Sampson, soprano Reginald Mobley, countertenor James Way, tenor Roderick Williams, baritone H+H Orchestra and Chorus Handel: Messiah

BACH CHRISTMAS
ST. CECILIA PARISH, FIRST CHURCH IN CAMBRIDGE Delight in holiday music by Bach and Gabrieli, brilliantly performed—as it was meant to be heard— and led by Raphaël Pichon, acclaimed director of the Paris-based ensemble Pygmalion, in his H+H debut. You’ll sense the awe and wonder of the Christmas story as it unfolds with the exultant “Magnificat,” Mary’s rapturous response to hearing that she will bear the Messiah. Gabrieli’s motet “Hodie” transports you to the realm of the angels proclaiming “Gloria in excelsis Deo.” And Bach’s cantata invites you to rejoice in the season!
FRIDAY, DEC 3, 2021 AT 7:30PM; ST. CECILIA PARISH SUNDAY, DEC 5, 2021 AT 4:00PM (NOTE TIME); FIRST CHURCH IN CAMBRIDGE Raphaël Pichon, conductor Soloists, TBD H+H Orchestra and Chorus J.S. Bach: Magnificat, BWV 243 Gabrieli: “Hodie Christus natus est” (“Christ is Born Today”) J.S. Bach: Cantata 110, Unser Mund sei voll Lachens (“May our Mouth be Full of Laughter”)
BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY NO. 7 SYMPHONY HALL
Feel the wild abandon of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony—“the apotheosis of the dance itself,” Wagner called it. It fairly whirls with exuberance and energy when H+H musicians perform it with more than 200 years of cobwebs swept off the score. Václav Luks, artistic director of Prague’s Collegium 1704, pairs it with the H+H premiere of Voříšek’s only symphony. Composed about a decade later, echoes of Beethoven and Schubert—even a foretaste of early Romanticism— make it a perfect companion piece. Plus, the spirited introduction to an operatic love triangle by the prodigiously gifted Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.
FRIDAY, JAN 7, 2022 AT 7:30PM SUNDAY, JAN 9, 2022 AT 3:00PM Václav Luks, conductor H+H Orchestra Bologne: Overture to L’amant Anonyme Voříšek: Symphony in D Major Beethoven: Symphony No. 7
HAYDN + MOZART SYMPHONY HALL
You’ll be wowed by Haydn’s Drum Roll Symphony performed “the H+H way”—sounding fresh and authentic as it did on the day of its premiere— starting with a dramatic timpani flourish. Aisslinn Nosky is front and center for our Orchestra’s premiere of Mozart’s spirited Violin Concerto No. 1. Haydn’s mass honoring the Empress Maria Theresia is at once robust, solemn, and serene in its final plea for peace and provides a showcase for the artistry of our illustrious Chorus.
FRIDAY, JAN 28, 2022 AT 7:30PM SUNDAY, JAN 30, 2022 AT 3:00PM Harry Christophers, conductor Aisslinn Nosky, violin Mary Bevan, soprano Catherine Wyn-Rogers, mezzo-soprano Jeremy Budd, tenor Sumner Thompson, baritone H+H Orchestra and Chorus Haydn: Symphony No. 103, Drum Roll Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 1 Haydn: Theresienmesse

BACH + VIVALDI GLORIA
HAYDN THE CREATION
Savor music performed with renewed vitality by the H+H Orchestra. The Ouverture of J.S.’s buoyant Orchestral Suite No. 1 leads into a set of elegant dances, while C.P.E.‘s ecstatic Magnificat features festive trumpets and drums that infuse this masterpiece with sparkling life. Our exceptional chorus also shines in Vivaldi’s sunny Gloria, with conductor Jonathan Cohen contributing his passion for Baroque jewels, honed at Quebec’s Les Violons du Roy and London’s Arcangelo. Listen for the rapturous “Domine Deus” movement of Vivaldi’s beloved masterwork.
This performance of Haydn’s exalted choral masterpiece sets a crown upon the Harry Christophers era. The Creation’s miraculous overture plunges us into Chaos—formless and mysterious. Suddenly, we are struck with radiance as orchestra and chorus proclaim: “Let there be light!” You’ll hear winds, roaring lions, and Adam and Eve’s sublime love duet. The warmth and joy of the music declares: “And it was very good.” Don’t miss Harry Christophers’ farewell concert!

“ THIRTEEN YEARS HAVE GONE BY IN WHAT FEELS LIKE A MOMENT. WHEN I LOOK BACK AT EVERYTHING WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED IN THAT TIME, I FEEL AN IMMENSE SENSE OF PRIDE AND GRATITUDE. IT HAS TRULY BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO BE PART OF THIS AMAZING ORGANIZATION.”

2021/22
FAMOUSLY HIP H+H stands at the forefront of the Historically Informed Performance (HIP) movement, treating audiences to a timeless, one-of-a-kind listening experience. The orchestra plays on period instruments – the very kind that the great Baroque and Classical composers once wrote for. Woodwinds are made of wood, not metal or plastic. Brass instruments don’t have valves. Strings are crafted of gut, rather than steel. As you’d imagine, this gives the music a wholly different sound. But there’s more to the story. Our orchestra is smaller – with 25 to 50 musicians as opposed to the 100 found in contemporary orchestras. These musicians share a stage with a chorus of just 25 to 30 members. There’s an intimacy to each H+H performance that’s a throwback to the great performances of the past. And how sweet, how unexpected, the sound! Beloved masterpieces take on a whole new life. You feel different textures. Hear subtle and graceful variations. And notice beautiful nuances. You’ve never heard music like this. Until now. Welcome to music the way history’s greatest composers – including Handel and Haydn – intended. Get hip to an historically informed performance by an organization that’s been playing music longer than anyone in the country.
