From the desk of... A DESK INSPIRED PUBLICATION FROM HAND- E Y E S UPPLY

The desk is a delicate thing: functional but personal, cleared or cluttered, sometimes messy and sometimes meticulously kempt, but always useful. This Hand-Eye Supply publication pays homage to the often overlooked ecosystem of the desk, its tools and its diverse users. Portland, Oregon hosts an amazing array of talented desk users and an accordingly beautiful array of desks. Here’s a spectrum of desktops and creative workers who love them. 1

AARON JAMES DRAPLIN

GRAPHIC ARTIST & FIELD NOTES CO - FOUNDER

Draplin is a man of strong colors and careful lines. An obsessive collector of choice logos, lettering and ephemera, he puts that passion for simple detail into his work as the proud dad of the Field Notes line, and titular designer at Draplin Design Co.

YOUR MANIFESTO / RULES TO LIVE BY / MOTTO: 01. 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15.

Keep shit fun. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Do whatever you can to take down Guy Fieri. Stay away from the award shows. Doorstops more or less. Don’t be afraid to put the hours in. Sometimes it’s all uphill. Call your mom and dad as much as you can. No twigs, seeds, berries, honey, bark or gravel in my mustard, goddammit. Shake hands firmly. Take good care of yer UPS/Mail/FedEx person. Anyone who plays a bass guitar above their belt buckle? Turd. Always turn shit over. (Junkin’, etc.) Never trust accessory pillows. One can subsist a long while on a loaf of bread and pound of meat. Take a second here and there to realize how amazing life is. Get cosmic.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IF YOU LEFT OUT ALL THE BORING PARTS? Straightforward, able to “take a punch”, resolute, long-lasting, universal, detailed, populist, witty and, hell, maybe even “fun”. I’d just hope that the work does its job, and that all people can enjoy it.

PEN, PENCIL OR STYLUS? Pencil to get the idea from the thinker onto paper. A pen to refine the shapes into something a tad more refined. Then into Adobe Illustrator to build the shape. With a mouse! I draw with my left

hand on paper, but “on screen” I use my right hand. That’s kind of weird. Results vary. Both with my work and my life.

BE HONEST: HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLEAN YOUR DESK? At least once a week. I just get to a point where I can’t take it anymore, freak out, and straighten shit up. The chaos messes with me. I need shit tight before I can get to work.

BEATRICE THOMPSON

ART DIRECTOR & DESIGNER AT ROUNDHOUSE

Beatrice art directed and designed for Adidas, now designs stuff for Poler alongside her day job at Roundhouse, and tends a particularly charming stream of photos of her adorable dog bud Lucia. Whether in photography, direction, design or graphics, her work is lighthearted, bold and regularly involves fur.

YOUR MANIFESTO / RULES TO LIVE BY / MOTTO: I’ve got a few. It’s mostly just trying to be a kind person and not beating myself up mentally too much. I’m a firm believer in saying what you mean/feel/think/will do with integrity and then following through as fully as you can. Being able to trust from all fronts is super important. I also have sticky notes spread throughout the places I spend time that I can constantly reference on a daily basis – bathroom mirror, in my car, on my work computer. “Watch the breath! Quiet the mind! Accept the truth! Awaken the heart! Experience bliss!”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IF YOU LEFT OUT ALL THE BORING PARTS? As a whole: all over the place. I tend to get complacent and bored easily, so it’s better if I can switch things up. Currently I’m in a heavy photo phase (it’s where my roots originally lie).

On an individual level: simple. I say that not in the sense that what I do is simple, but rather the process or techniques used. There is a lightness or effortlessness vibe that comes off the finished pieces. I think of my work like it’s an extension of my fashion style – often basic and clean pieces, yet if you pay attention to all the tiny details, or if you are aware of the thought behind it all you would understand how amazing and beautiful and detailed oriented everything truly is. I like those quiet moments that most don’t notice or get. It should look and feel effortless even if it’s truly not.

PEN, PENCIL OR STYLUS? Pen. Preferably a Micron 02 in black.

BE HONEST: HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLEAN YOUR DESK? Not often. Usually only if it gets cluttered with stuff not supposed to be on it and I need the space to work on.

CALVIN ROSS CARL

ARTIST & CREATIVE LEAD AT SINCERELY TRUMAN

Calvin paints pictures physically and figuratively. His work as a creative lead at the heartfelt agency Sincerely Truman helps clients tell honest, compelling stories. His work as a visual artist paints slightly gloppy, slightly cynical pieces of mind.

YOUR MANIFESTO / RULES TO LIVE BY / MOTTO: Most things are boring most of the time.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IF YOU LEFT OUT ALL THE BORING PARTS? In a nutshell, I apply systems or structures to images and words. I know that sounds generic. However, by night I am an artist where my work focuses on aesthetics taken from mundane aspects of life and applying grids and systems to them in an attempt to find beauty, meaning and comfort in the mundane. By day my specialty is in user experience design where I attempt

to apply design systems to the way people behave, whether it’s online or IRL.

two years at Sincerely Truman, I have removed papers from my desk maybe two or three times. I have definitely never wiped it down clean.

JENNIFER JAMES WRIGHT DESIGN DIRECTOR OF OUUR STUDIO

JJ cut her teeth in the studio at Wieden+Kennedy, and her multidisciplinary design and illustration work has lent a hand to clients such as Nike Skateboarding and Hometapes. Her art direction made an impact on the visually clever Kinfolk Magazine prior to the launch of their inviting new product line Ouur where she is the simplicity-loving powerhouse overseeing all things creative.

YOUR MANIFESTO / RULES TO LIVE BY / MOTTO:

ALL THE BORING PARTS?

BE HONEST: HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLEAN YOUR DESK?

There’s nothing wrong with learning as you go. It’s scary to take on work outside of your expertise, but oftentimes I find that the creative process can be applied to other disciplines as long as there’s a heavy dose of logic in it.

I lead all creative needs for the Ouur brand – everything from designing the printed lookbooks to art directing the seasonal campaign shoots to shaping each season’s overarching concept to help guide the apparel designers in Japan. Because we’re a small team, I also have my hands in other areas such as strategizing for our U.S. launch, developing new collaboration items, attending sample checks and so on.

I actually do a quick tidy-up at the end of each day. Our office is bright and clean, so I try to keep my corner from being a total eyesore. Now that I’m in the habit, I find I almost need a tidy desk to get in the right head space.

Slow it down. The workplace is such a rushed environment no matter where you are and all too often we make decisions (creative or not) without the upfront critical thought they need. Be nice. No one likes working with jerks.

I only clean my desk as a procrastination method from tackling my to-do list. It’s called Procrasticleaning. Cleaning a desk, vacuuming a room, organizing a book shelf are all tasks that are VERY satisfying to me.

This is my work summed up as a TWEET: I mostly teach, organize, draw, document, collect and share but I also do a lot of other things that involve energy, conversation and exchange.

RACHEL ANCLIFFE

APPAREL DESIGNER

Rachel is an apparel design specialist and pattern-loving shibori devotee with chops. Her design history includes co-founding the fashion brands Charles & Victoria and Institute of Dress after she honed in on her skills at such notables as Rugby Ralph Lauren, and Lip Service. Now she designs for Adidas Basketball by day, and her own Ancliffe Collection by night. YOUR MANIFESTO / RULES TO LIVE BY / MOTTO: I try to be sincere in everything I do. When it comes to designing I try and keep things simple and modern: don’t over design. And, a good friend once said to me: “This is just your point of view, so be honest with it.” I keep that in my mind when I get off track and it helps me know when things “feel” right.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IF YOU LEFT OUT ALL THE BORING PARTS? I get to experiment with fabric and clothing. The most fun I have had this year was getting to dive into Shibori dyeing with indigo and seeing what I could do with it. It allowed me to get really messy and let go of my controlling voice. Some things had to be out of my control in the process. It was good for me.

PEN, PENCIL OR STYLUS? I use all three, but I always start with a pencil. I love how you see the artist’s hand and control by using pressure. If I have to make a presentation with full illustrations I use pens of all types for lining and coloring. When it comes to production documents and line sheets for the factory it is a stylus. Maybe in a way I am lucky to get to use all three. But the pencil is still my favorite and I don’t get to use it as much as I would like.

BE HONEST: HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLEAN YOUR DESK? I clean it at the beginning of every season and at the beginning

of a large project. It helps to have a clean slate. I even cleaned out my closet of all the things I found distracting and pulled me to another line or another time so it would not get in the way of my new designs. I think any time I have a big shift in my duties (design to production mode, production to marketing) I have to clean to make room for the proper tools. I can also use it as a way to procrastinate the beginning of work, but all the while my brain is working on what has to get done. I guess you could say I clean it a lot.

SASHA BURCHUK

WEB DEVELOPER & CMS SPECIALIST

Sasha Burchuk builds beautiful, diverse online spaces. She is responsible for elegant online presentation for dancers, artists, and carefully curated boutiques such as Stand Up Comedy.

YOUR MANIFESTO / RULES TO LIVE BY / MOTTO: 01. It doesn’t matter where you start. Start anywhere. Even starting in the wrong place is better than delaying starting. 02. If you’re not failing on a regular basis you’re not pushing yourself, and if you’re not pushing yourself you’re not going to grow. 03. Don’t fear failure, it is a natural part of life, unavoidable, and you can learn a lot from it. 04. Be generous with your time and resources because there is not enough generosity in the world. 05. If you’re going through hell, keep going! The only way out is through. 06. There has to be a quid-pro-quo for life to be enjoyable. You have to get out of it what you put in to it. If that’s not happening, something needs to change.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK IF YOU LEFT OUT ALL THE BORING PARTS? I think of myself as kind of a mechanic, because I spend a lot of time just fixing things. But there is also a creative aspect to programming that I find very beautiful.

Programming is a practical form of magic. At its best programming is a very highly organized expression of a perfect system. You have to think through all of the components of the system and then figure out how to put them together to make something work. There’s a universal beauty to programming that I find fascinating. Sometimes I think about how everything in my life is just “running a program” - even the cells in my body are running programs to absorb nutrients and carry oxygen and make energy.

BE HONEST: HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLEAN YOUR DESK? I rarely clean my desk because I don’t need to. I practice minimalism at work and at home because if my space is uncluttered then my mind is uncluttered. I make a few exceptions for things that cheer me up and inspire me to keep working, like plants and things that friends made and gave to me. I guess I am fortunate though to have a profession where the vast majority of what I make I make inside of a computer.
