Heat Stress KILLS

According to the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) 8,015 people in the US died from heat related stress during the years 1979 through 2003, this averages out

to a death rate exceeding 300 persons per year. in order to combat the effects of heat related stress on workers, California is requiring employers to take the following preventative actions; the employer must make available to employees water, shade and employee training. Water must be provided at the rate of one quart per hour per employee. Shade must be made available when the outside temperature in the work area exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit. California defines shade as “blockage of direct sunlight” but includes the requirement for adequate ventilation as well. To explain the ventilation requirements the regulations give the example of “a car sitting in the sun does not give adequate shade unless the air conditioning is running”. The employer will be required to provide enough shade to accommodate 25 percent of the work force at any time for a minimum of 5 minutes at a time. In certain industries misting may be allowed

36

in lieu of shade if shade is impractical. The companies are implemening High Heat Procedures when the temperature exceeds 95 degrees. These procedures include the requirement that good communications between employees and employer is maintained, visual supervision of employees must be maintained and reminding employees to drink plenty of water and seek shade as required is repeated during the work shift. New employees must be closely supervised until they are adequately trained on the company’s heat stress policies. Heat stress is easy to be subjected to and with the proper plans in place is easily prevented. Some of the options for shade are, but not limited too: 1. Permanent structures such as but not limited to trees, fixed overhangs, and pavilions. The main issue with permanent structures is that they are not always available. 2. Umbrellas can be set up in most locations and either attached to a truck or anchored on the ground. This can be a great solution for a small crew, but the

The Electric Current April 2011

shade area is limited. 3. Canopies can deployed at most locations and provide a large shaded area for workers. Sadly most canopies are not built for the daily abuse of a work site and have many moving parts. 4. Tents, when equipped with proper ventilation, either air conditioners or mesh sides, can be a good solution for medium size crews and offer easy set up and fewer moving parts. Make sure to shop around and find an industrial grade tent without loose parts. Heat stress is something that can be avoided when simple precautions are made. Like with many purchases, you will want to get the most for your money, so make sure to do research and find the best solution for your environment. ❑ Mark Niksic is the Vice President of Operations and has worked with Pelsue Company (www.pelsue.com) for over 20 years. Dangers of

Dirty Power

When correct power (a clean sine wave) is supplied within design limits to an electrical device, you can expect a long and productive life. "Correct Power" is not the Norm. If your power usage is 120 to 600 volts, it is not uncommon to incur up to 6000 volts in what is known as Spikes, Surges and Transients, or SST's. These anomalies are always above the design limits of electrical devices. Business is a living thing, breathing entity. Every business has within a multitude of systems to make it run effectively to provide a product and profit. These systems include: parts, labour, tools, supply and demand. Cut out anyone of these systems and your product in not made and therefore your company loses. Still there is one more system in business, hardly seen, spoken about or contemplated... the electrical system. Uninterrupted data flow and communications combined with reduced equipment replacement and repairs typically saves users equal to approximately 10% of their annual power bill.

• Prevents "data loss" and glitches on communications lines. • Reduces long term degradation and extends the life of electronic equipment, motors and electrical system components

Benefits of Surge Protection Devices: ELIMINATES "ELECTRICAL POLLUTION"

RAPID PAYBACK OF YOUR INVESTMENT

• Stops the high voltage surges and transients on the incoming power lines from entering and contaminating your building's distribution system. Traps transients generated internally at their source to keep your power system clean

ELIMINATES DAMAGE AND FAILURES OF SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT • Stops catastrophic failures of computers, automation controls, HVAC systems, electronic lighting controls, office equipment and factory machinery.

INCREASES YOUR PRODUCTIVITY AND UPTIME • Uninterrupted data flow and communications results in saved time and less rework • Reduced equipment replacement and repairs yields less maintenance, better utilization and increased uptime

REDUCES YOUR INSURANCE RATES • Many insurance carriers are offering a discount or even requiring the use of a Surge Protection Device (SPD) to protect sensitive office machines, computer rooms, HVAC equipment and building automation systems.

• Typically users experience savings in equipment replacement and repairs equal to approximately 10% of their annual power bill. This is usually adequate to achieve less than a one year payback.

EASY TO INSTALL AND MONITOR • Rugged NEMA 4 enclosures mount adjacent to your power panel on new or retrofit applications • Built-in front panel "self Surgepure surge protection devices are available in six different protection levels, ranging from the Mach 1 series designed to protect residential buildings to the Mach 6 that will protect commercial and industrial buildings. AISC CERTIFIED!

quality project every time.

Utility Metals has implemented a quality system certified by The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). What is AISC certification? Certification is a statement to owners, specifiers, and the construction industry that says, "Quality is built in!" AISC Certification is a rigorous examination to evaluate a company's quality management system rather than the specific product. Certification is based upon a third party audit conducted by people experienced in fabrication and/or erection. Certification looks at processes and procedures, since it's easier to build quality into a project and impossible to inspect for it after the fact. To provide you with peace of mind, AISC auditors conduct on-site visits to: • Review the company's entire system from receipt of contract through final delivery; • Review project requirements and project records; • Interview personnel - from the shop to the president; and • Observe practices and equipment to confirm - with confidence - that proper quality standards and procedures are in place. Certification provides specifiers, owners, and general contractors with assurance that Utility Metals has the personnel, experience, knowledge, and equipment to deliver a
