PUBLISHER’S LETTER

To be blunt...

It’s nearly time for Halloween! That was quick, wasn’t it? Okay, so now summer is officially over, the visitors have gone home but we still have some pretty great weather to enjoy and you now have almost a whole month to plan your costume for the 31st of October. Can’t be bad, can it? One of the things that the SOCIETY team is looking forward to this month is the release of the movie version of the Paula Hawkins bestselling thriller, The Girl on the Train. Copies of this seem to have been knocking around the offices here for at least a year so now everyone is fascinated to see what the Hollywood version will look like, especially since the action has been transplanted from London to New York. This month’s cover star, the striking and talented Emily Blunt, takes on the part of Rachel Watson, the novel’s very unreliable narrator and expectations are high. Blunt’s career has been a glittering one so far, remarkable when you consider that, unlike so many successful British actors, she has never actually attended drama school, being talent spotted when still at secondary school. Her lack of formal training doesn’t seem to have held her back and she has even been chosen to reprise Mary Poppins, a role originally made famous by Julie Andrews. Have you ever stopped to consider how many hits have their origins in the famous BRIT School? Admittedly we don’t usually cover educational matters but this is far from your average school, since its alumni include Adele, Amy Winehouse and Rizzle Kicks. Obviously its teaching staff are doing something right since not only has this very successful performing arts college turned out as many hits as Stock, Aitken and Waterman, but it has also received glowing ratings from OFSTED. To cap it all it’s completely free of charge. Prospective students undergo a tough audition process but, once admitted, aren’t obliged to pay any fees, which means that anyone can gain

entry – providing they have loads of talent, of course! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we know that many readers will have had their own experience of this illness. Our Elle McKenzie discusses the consequences of mastectomy, both post diagnosis and as a preventative measure in women who have a genetic predisposition to breast cancer. We also offer some sound advice from the experts at Marbella’s High Care Clinic, who have years of experience in treating the disease. In

this issue you can also read about the very talented jewellery designer, Tamara Comolli, whose glittering creations can now be viewed and purchased at the Marbella Club Hotel. Tamara has already won a slew of awards for her imaginative and lavish designs, so if you ladies want to see something to make your heart race, you should make your way there as soon as possible. I know that my other half is already looking for an excuse to visit!

Talking about something to make your heart race, Ian Kuah has again bagged the best job for himself and test driven the new Panamera Turbo, which sounds like another guaranteed triumph for Porsche. How those engineers and designers keep on banging out hit after hit I don’t know, but it looks as though they’ve done it again. Go on, boys – I dare you to add it to your list for Santa.

Emily Blunt:

ENGLISH ROSE TO HOLLYWOOD PERENNIAL

W

hen it was announced that a Hollywood adaptation of Paul Hawkins’s bestselling thriller, The Girl on the Train was to be made, the gossip immediately started. Who had the acting chops to tackle the part of Rachel Watson, Hawkins’s troubled protagonist? When Emily Blunt was announced as the successful candidate, few were surprised. Since her movie debut in 2004’s My Summer of Love, Blunt has consistently impressed audiences and critics alike with her range both on stage and in front of the camera. Born on February the 23rd 1983 in Wandsworth, South London, Emily Blunt is the second of four children born to Joanna and Oliver Blunt QC, respectively an actress and a barrister.

Blunt’s 2001 professional theatrical debut was a suitably dazzling one. Cast in Sir Peter Hall’s production of George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber’s 1927 play, The Royal Family, a lighthearted parody of the famous acting dynasty, the Barrymores, not only did she impress London’s notoriously sniffy theatre critics, but went on to win the Best Newcomer prize at the Evening Standard Awards. This early success meant that she was then offered a significant part in the 2002 National Theatre production of Nicholas Wright’s Vincent in Brixton, before taking on Juliet in Indhu Rubasingham’s production of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Blunt’s childhood was financially comfortable but not without its difficulties since, at the age of seven, she developed a debilitating stammer. This could have put paid to her acting ambitions, but fortunately a teacher suggested that she use her interest in drama to combat the condition and, by the time she was 14 she had managed to conquer it. From the age of 16 she attended a private sixthform college, Hurtwood House, which was well known for the excellence of its performing arts programmes, where her talent was discovered by a theatrical agent.

“The performances I enjoy are the ones that are hard to read or ambiguous or left-of-centre because it makes you look closer and that’s what humans are like - quite mysterious creatures, hard to pinpoint.”

16

Her success in the theatre meant that it didn’t take long for TV casting agents to realise that here was a young actress on her way to the top of the profession. It seemed that 2003 was the year of the historical drama for Emily; first she was cast in Boudica, an account of the life of the famous Celtic warrior queen and later she received rave reviews as the pretty, but vacuous and doomed, Catherine Howard in a two-part drama about Henry VIII, starring Ray Winstone. However, most Blunt watchers agree that 2004 was the year that really catapaulted her into the premiere league of young actresses, when she was cast in her first feature film. Filmed in West Yorkshire, writer and director Pawel Pawlikowski’s My Summer of Love might have cost a fraction of the big budget Hollywood blockbusters in which she was to star later in her career, but it certainly made an impression. Starring as Tamsin, one half of a mismatched lesbian couple, Blunt wowed the critics and shared an Evening Standard British Film Award with her co-star, Natalie Press. The following year she was back on Britain’s small screens in Stephen

Poliakoff’s Gideon’s Daughter opposite Bill Nighy and Miranda Richardson. A Poliakoff production is, rightly or wrongly, always considered a major event by Britain’s TV bosses and critics, so being cast as Nighy’s troubled daughter in this drama was a very smart move and ultimately won her a Golden Globe when her performance also impressed American viewers. In 2006 Blunt entered the consciousness of mainstream movie-goers, when she was cast opposite Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada, an adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel telling the story of the relationship between Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, a monstrous Anna Wintour-esque fashion editor and her hapless junior assistant, played by Hathaway. This was memorable not only for Blunt’s turn as Priestly’s senior assistant but that one of her co-stars was Stanley Tucci, who became a friend. Blunt introduced Tucci, who had been recently widowed, to her older sister, Felicity and they married in 2012. At the time, Blunt’s personal life was even more interesting because, in 2005, she had met Michael Bublé backstage at Australia’s Logie TV Awards in Melbourne. Things

developed quickly and it wasn’t long before the pair had moved in together, Blunt sharing a home with the Canadian singer in Vancouver until they parted company in 2008.

“People just want to know something, anything. It’s all the stuff you never want to talk about, the private stuff.” As her relationship with Bublé advanced - and retreated - so Blunt’s Hollywood career continued to snowball as she appeared in Charlie Wilson’s War with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and played the title role in The Young Victoria which was written by Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes. By the time The Young Victoria hit cinemas around the world, Blunt had ended her relationship with Bublé and met American actor and producer, John Krasinski, who had also appeared in several big budget Hollywood movies, including Jarhead and Dreamgirls and starring in the role originally made famous by Martin Freeman in the US version of The Office. They married in 2010, at an

17

elaborate ceremony at Lake Como in Italy and, in 2014, Blunt gave birth to her first daughter, Hazel. Not that a happy marriage meant that she had slowed down. On the contrary, Blunt found that she was even more in demand, appearing with Ewan McGregor in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and with Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, the adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s military science fiction creation, All You Need is Kill. She also spread her wings a little by appearing in the longawaited movie version of the popular Stephen Sondheim musical, Into the Woods alongside Meryl Streep and James Corden, continuing the fairytale theme with a turn in The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

tickets to see the film (in which the action has been transplanted from suburban London to New York), she will have the opportunity to highlight her acting talent for probably her widest audience yet. Having given birth earlier this year to another daughter, Violet, Blunt has lately been concentrating her efforts on voice roles in animated movies, but it was recently announced that she would play the title character in 2018’s reboot of Mary Poppins.

“I want to find something really wonderful to do next and take my time to search through the dearth of great material, especially for women.”

Given her projects over the past few of years, The Girl on the Train will certainly test Emily Blunt’s ability to deliver a performance suitable for such a gritty drama. With so many fans of the novel queueing to buy

18

Despite now being a US citizen, a move that reportedly caused her some soul-searching, it is difficult to imagine a more suitable successor to the role first made famous by Julie Andrews. It is a truth universally acknowledged that America still loves a British accent and it will take more than a change of nationality to wipe the English rose out of Emily Blunt.

Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, one hundred and eighteen cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world’s most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next seventy-two hours one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on earth. THE FLAME BEARER Bernard Cornwell Britain is in a state of uneasy peace. Northumbria’s Viking ruler, Sigtryggr, and Mercia’s Saxon Queen Aethelflaed have agreed a truce. And so England’s greatest warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, at last has the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole from him so many years ago – and which his scheming cousin still occupies. But fate is inexorable and the enemies Uhtred has made and the oaths he has sworn combine to distract him from his dream of recapturing Bebbanburg. New enemies enter into the fight for England’s kingdoms: the redoubtable Constantin of Scotland seizes an opportunity for conquest and leads his armies south. Britain’s precarious peace threatens to turn into a war of annihilation. But Uhtred is determined that nothing, neither the new enemies nor the old foes who combine against him, will keep him from his birthright.

BRITAIN’S

New Hit Factory

Where there’s music, there’s money. Maybe not as much as there used to be, but the UK’s music market is nonetheless holding its own very nicely thank you and this is due, in no small part, to the influence of the BRIT School and its talented alumni. From Amy Winehouse and Adele to Rizzle Kicks and The Feeling, this very exclusive academy for the performing arts has had the kind of influence over the charts that Simon Cowell would kill for.

F

ounded in 1991 and based in Croydon, the BRIT School makes no apologies for the stringency of its standards; if you are invited to audition and fail to make an impression you will not be allowed to enrol. Only the most talented youngsters are offered a place and it is this freedom to select its students that has allowed the BRIT School to maintain its enviable level of success. It is not terribly surprising to learn that its creation was inspired by Alan Parker’s 1980 movie, Fame. Based on life at New York City’s High School of Performing Arts, the film detailed the struggles of a group of artistically talented youngsters as they contemplated a future as dancers, singers, musicians and composers. The BRIT School’s founder, Mark Featherstone-Witty saw the film and immediately started to wonder why London didn’t have an equivalent educational establishment. Having taught in several London comprehensive schools, worked as an Assistant Editor for Macmillan Education and previously been Principal of Holborn Tutorial College before leaving to start Capital College in 1980, Featherstone-Witty was

24

ideally placed to fill this gap. Within the space of roughly ten years he managed to turn the inspiration he had gained from watching Fame into action; in 1991 the BRIT School for the Performing Arts was founded. Established under the umbrella of the City Technology Colleges and sponsored by the British Recording Industry Trust, the BRIT School offers education and training to suitable candidates from the ages of 14 to 19 in areas such as Film and Media Production, Dance, Musical Theatre, Visual Arts and Design, Interactive Digital Design, Music and Theatre, as well as traditional subjects such as English, Maths, Science and Physical Education. Of course, institutions such as the Italia Conti and Anna Scher schools have a long and proud history of producing generations of performers from Phil Daniels and Kathy Burke to Russell Brand and Tracey Ullman. In the same way, academies such as RADA and LAMDA stand in for traditional universities, providing a practical alternative for wouldbe actors and theatre technicians. It is, then, perfectly natural that when the BRIT School is mentioned, the focus is often on its impressive roster of chart successes.

Just what is it that makes the BRIT School such a hot house for pop success? A 2011 BBC headline asked “Do BRIT School graduates have an unfair advantage?” and consulted no less an expert than the late Sir George Martin for his opinion. “The Beatles obviously didn’t need any help,” he said. “But if you had other bands of that era, yes the BRIT School would have been a tremendous help. It would give them an idea of how to work with each other and how to get ideas in music and how to grow them within the studio.” Those in the music industry also have various opinions. Paul Stokes, Associate Editor of Q Magazine confesses his frustration at the way that BRIT alumni are often regarded by the music press. “There is a snobbishness that it’s not the rock ‘n’ roll way of doing things. The BRIT School is more geared up to producing the kind of success that will result in a mainstream and therefore quite loud success. That’s rather than, say, if you’re a band that are struggling away in your basement. You don’t shoot straight to being signed and being on the telly, you have to work and play lots of gigs.”

When Kate Bush was signed to EMI at the age of 16, she was put on retainer for two years so that she would have the time and space that she needed to develop her songwriting, singing and dancing skills. This is, unfortunately, no longer the case, meaning that tomorrow’s young music stars need to be launched, fully formed, into a much more brutal and less forgiving world. Bearing this in mind, Nick Williams, the school’s first headmaster, was determined that discipline and rigour should play an important part in the curriculum. “When you send your child here, you are not consigning him to some kind of unstructured mêlée. Everyone here comes to lessons, everyone turns up on time, and everything we do is

The BRIT School might be better known for its performing arts curriculum, but a recent OFSTED report rated it as an outstanding school academically as well.

Are you on the

Appreciation Diet ? Relationships that incorporate frequent appreciation and recognition tend to be happier, healthier and closer.

D

o you show as much recognition and appreciation as you could of all the things, big and small, your partner does for you and your family unit? Do you continue to let them know what a positive difference they make to your life and your mental state? By eliminating complacency and reintroducing the simple relationship habits we used to implement naturally at the start of our relationship, we can get our spouse/partner to engage more within the relationship. After all, we know from behavioural psychology that reinforcing good behaviour means the person is more likely to repeat it. By recognising and showing appreciation for something someone has done, or regularly does, they are naturally inclined to continue this behaviour.

26

Remember, the appreciation can be about them as a person, how they make you feel, how they help you, or about something they have done or something they regularly do.

Even in the business world, research into business relationships shows similar outcomes because we are, after all, human beings. In the 2008 “Global Recognition Study” the research conducted by the firm Towers Perrin for the O.C. Tanner company interviewed 10,333 people from different organisations in 13 different countries and found that increased appreciation led to a significant increase in engagement which they identify as the amount of a person’s “effort, energy, and imagination” they’re getting. How much of your spouse’s (partner’s) effort, energy, and imagination are you currently getting? Is it in direct correlation with the amount of appreciation and recognition you’re currently giving? If you have stopped showing your spouse or partner appreciation and recognition, is it because you don’t care about the relationship being successful anymore or is it because you have lost touch with the simple daily actions that

shape the happiness of your relationship long-term? If you need to reignite the passion, or even the actual love, in your relationship, begin a daily diet of appreciation and recognition. It will

!

make you both feel good and you’ll both reap relationship rewards. Do this consistently and persistently for at least four weeks and see where your relationship is after the four weeks compared with where it was before you started.

DAILY RELATIONSHIP APPRECIATION AND RECOGNITION DIET Every morning, before you part company for individual commitments, tell your spouse or partner something you appreciate about them. This will start their day well, as well as yours.

Remember, the appreciation can be about them as a person, how they make you feel, how they help you, or about something they have done or something they regularly do. If it makes a positive difference to your mental well-being, your life experiences, and/or your relationship, tell them.

When you come together again in the evening, verbally recognise something else you appreciate about your partner. At bedtime, show your partner verbal appreciation for something else. Adding non-verbal recognition to your verbal one, like a touch, hug or kiss, also helps reinforce the message of appreciation.

Over time, not only will your partner be more inclined to repeat such behaviours or retain such traits, they will also associate you and the relationship with that wonderful, warm, fuzzy feeling they get inside when you recognise the things (big and small) that they contribute to your life together.

To Hell

and back

This is a true story. It comes as the result of an interview that I had with a middle-aged man. He gave permission for me to write about it in the hope that it might help others facing a similar situation. It is, I think, worth telling. In his own words...

28

I

t was the beginning of May 2015 when I caught the flu. I was under a lot of pressure at work, I was rowing with my ex, I felt miserable physically, and I was having a constant fight with what I suspected I might be, which had been exacerbated by an episode about which I shall tell you in due course. I took to my bed, and basically stayed there until November. If people called I tried to make my apartment presentable, but really I couldn’t have cared less. The only reason that I didn’t take to drink or drugs was that I couldn’t afford them. Then in December the landlord kicked me out. A colleague kindly took me in. I began

to realise that she was in love with me, but this only added to my confusion. I couldn’t respond. I told her that a relationship was not possible, but I didn’t tell her why. I felt I had to get out, so I found a little studio flat with a bit of money that I had left.

To safeguard my self esteem I began to lie to people. I told them that I had a good job. That I was travelling all over the world. In reality I was skulking in my flat by myself and inventing things on the internet. I grew remarkably adept at this, even sending snaps of foreign countries. The deceit grew until I could hardly control it. I stopped

eating. I began to hallucinate. My children, my sister and a cousin found me and persuaded me to seek help. I needed a lot of persuasion, but finally I managed to get myself admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

In the hospital they told me that it would take a fortnight properly to diagnose my problem. It took three weeks. I was finally put into a sort of communal ward, headed by a sociotherapist. I also saw a psychiatrist who said that he could not see the need for any medication, but that a very structured series of in-depth interviews was

He felt that I needed to break down the barriers that I had erected as a child, and built upon as a grown-up. I had

achieved a good university degree and enjoyed a high-flying career, but emotionally I was a mess. I had loved my wife. We had children. But that, I felt, was that. I still felt a void. I felt that there was something else. Gradually the barriers started to come down. It felt like a disaster. I had only to look at a beautiful tree or flower and I would begin to sob uncontrollably. If I smelt a familiar smell – say, brewing coffee – there I would go again; sobbing like a little child. This was regarded as great progress. But after each episode I felt that I had undergone an orgasm and needed a cigarette. The sociotherapist began to delve deeper. I finally had to admit openly that I was attracted to men as well as women.

The break-up of my marriage was the final nail in the coffin, but a gay relationship was the cause of what I still saw as my downfall, and what I was trying to keep secret. In the course of my work I had been invited to a working dinner with the ambassador of a certain country. We

were alone when he suddenly said “I like you”. I confessed that I liked him too. We kissed,

and I spent the rest of the night at the Residency. I felt that I had come home. We had a six month relationship, and then he was transferred. My world fell apart with the result that I have outlined above. When I left the hospital I entered into a series of brief relationships until I met a man fifteen years younger than me who had been “Mr Gay” for his country. We were together for three years.

During this time we once kissed publicly in the market square, and were observed by a friend of my ex-wife. The next day she told my children “Do you know that your dad is a dirty poof?” The twins were 12 and my son 14 at the time. When they tackled me I tried to explain. My son was understanding, but the twins and others in my family were not. But I learned one important thing in the hospital. My sexuality belongs to

me and to nobody else, and if people cannot understand this it is sad, but nothing can be done about it. Society is gradually

becoming more accepting, but there is still a long way to go.

I am now happy. I have met a marvellous man, and we are very much in love. He is an interior

designer; creative and romantic. He too has been through a marriage and has a daughter of 11. Until she is old enough to understand, when she visits I stay away. Neither of us feel that this is ideal, but we realise that temporarily it is for the best. We do not want her to react like my own children. Who knows what the future will bring? But whatever happens, I have at last been able to openly acknowledge my own sexuality. I am gay, and rather proud to be gay. The realisation has come with pain and anguish, and has meant a great wrench within a family which never talks about emotions.

This is the constraint which underlay my problems in childhood, which caused me to deny my own emotions, and which resulted in what I now recognise as a nervous breakdown. I have been to hell and back.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

DEALING WITH A

Double Whammy Breast cancer delivers a series of blows and the mastectomy is one of its most challenging ones. But there are positive ways to deal with the loss of one or both breasts.

C

ancer in any of its myriad forms is ugly. It’s a word that is unmentionable, like death, and we use terms like “The Big C’ to soften it, just as we prefer to say that when a person dies they have ‘passed away.’ Although cancer is common, it is extremely personal, and those who receive a cancer diagnosis, including their families, must make a journey with it that will be similar to that of other sufferers, and yet completely unique. Women with breast cancer have certain shared challenges, depending on the stage of the diagnosed cancer, but each one has to fight their war with it in their own way. Strategies must be devised for coping with the emotions, including those of partners and children, and plans are drawn up to deal with the effects of the various treatments. Of course, anyone with cancer must face these, but breast cancer presents a particular set of obstacles, because it involves a part of the anatomy that is a

quintessential element of the feminine, at least in Western society; the breasts. The mammary glands provide essential nutrition for a baby and are an integral part of motherhood. They also play a part in defining gender and, perhaps most important of all for the women who face the disease; breasts are worshipped as objects of sexual pleasure. And, it is this view of breasts that women have to hurdle over in order to be a survivor. Admittedly, it isn’t the only one, but when a physical attribute that is considered an integral part of female attractiveness needs to be removed, then women face an internal struggle where “I want to live” has to get in the ring and go several rounds against ‘Will I still be attractive?” Surely, there is no contest? How could looks win over life? Thankfully, there are women showing others how to make this choice and ways to support self-esteem, even when a radical double mastectomy is required.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The actress lost her mother, aunt and grandmother to cancer, so she is in a high-risk group and would typically have been monitored closely, even if she hadn’t had the genetic testing.

Angelina Jolie

Super celebrity Angelina Jolie brought global attention to the issue of the double mastectomy, not because she had a breast cancer diagnosis, but because she carries the gene that makes the likelihood of cancer appearing during her lifetime a greater probability. In May 2013 she underwent a double mastectomy because the mutation in the BRCA1 gene meant that she had an 87% risk of developing breast cancer and was at a 50% risk for ovarian cancer. The actress lost her mother, aunt and grandmother to cancer, so she is in a high-risk group and would typically have been monitored closely, even if she hadn’t had the genetic testing. Two years later she also had an operation to remove her ovaries and Fallopian tubes. It was something she planned, but her doctors brought the date for the surgery forward because a blood test had detected “potential anomalies linked to the protein CA-125,” which is a marker for ovarian cancer. Angelina’s mother lost her life to ovarian cancer at the age of 56, and her aunt died at the age of 61 from breast cancer. This is young by current standards, and Angelina explained that one of the key reasons she took the decision to have preventative surgery was so “that my children don’t have to experience the pain I did.”

Sian Williams

Former BBC presenter Sian Williams, had a double mastectomy when she was diagnosed with breast cancer the week after her 50th birthday. Although she had lost her aunt and her mother to cancer, she went along for a mammogram feeling confident that her healthy lifestyle made her chances of being diagnosed with cancer most “improbable.” As she told a journalist in an interview: “ I thought I was healthy. I did all the right things – I was a green tea drinker, a salmon eater and a runner.” The diagnosis and treatment had a huge impact on her relationship with her husband, who, as she says, “never knew if I was feeling strong and capable, or if I needed help.” She talked to trauma victims to help unlock her feelings, which she says was the most important step she took to discovering what really matters and what doesn’t. She has also recently published Rise: Surviving and Thriving after a Trauma, a book sharing her journey with breast cancer. Telling the tale of your journey is another survival tool and with self-publishing an easy option today, every woman has the opportunity to share her story with others, including the practical aspects, such as post-operative care.

Angelina opted for breast reconstruction post surgery and urged other women to take heart from the fact that the results of reconstructive therapy are “beautiful,” and said of her decision to have her breasts removed: “I feel that I have made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” But, some women have no choice about their double mastectomy.

Managing a mastectomy

Women with a single or double mastectomy have to look after their bodies after surgery. There is wound care and pain management to learn and exercises to relieve the stiffness in the arm and reduce swelling. Cancer Research UK advises women to stick to loose clothing during the recovery period when they can also insert a lightweight artificial breast prosthesis inside the bra, while they consider longer term options, including a more permanent prosthetic breast. Compared with decades past, there is now a wealth of special mastectomy bras and swimwear available, and one company called Amoena, which manufactures mastectomy lingerie, swimwear and prosthetics won a case this summer in the Supreme Court, reversing a Court of Appeals decision to impose import taxes on their bras. The court ruled “these bras are not normal lingerie” and that they perform a particular function that is distinct from ‘ordinary’ bras. The company was understandably overjoyed by the ruling, as were the many women who will now not be taxed for having to wear one. However, prosthetics, or breast reconstruction, are not the only options. Some survivors take a distinctly individual approach.

Except, the social media giants didn’t much care for these images of tattoos, because in their war against nudity they failed to distinguish between the naked female form used for pornographic purposes, and the tattooed breast that says through the image, “I’m a woman warrior fighting breast cancer.” Tattoo artist Amy Black started the Pink Ink Fund in 2011 when she discovered that “breast cancer survivors without health insurance in the US were concerned about the cost of post-mastectomy nipple tattoos.” Since she started it, the Pink Ink Fund has helped women travel to tattoo parlours and trained tattoo artists in the creation of special designs for these women. She was angry to find Instagram had removed the Fund’s page of images because it didn’t “follow our terms.” Following an outcry from supporters, Instagram has apologised and told a UK newspaper “We’re very sorry for our mistake.” As, Amy Black pointed out to them, “These images inspire and give hope to women and also helped artists create new ideas for body-sensitive projects.” She also reminded Instagram that one of its functions was as a social influencer and that making “harsh and weird decisions” didn’t live up to that.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and resulting hair loss she had her scalp tattooed with an Alice in Wonderland “Drink Me” bottle to symbolise the chemotherapy cocktail of drugs and the fact that she didn’t really know what she was taking. In an interview, Nikki recalled that the side effects of her treatment as hellish: “my bones felt like they were made of fibreglass, shattering over and over every time I tried to move a joint.” She used humour and experimental makeup to regain the control of her body that she felt she had lost and also complained that breast cancer is a “wrongly sexualised disease.” Adding insult to injury, men asked her “what size of new boobs was she thinking of getting,” and one even told her “you could do fetish porn once you’ve recovered.” She hasn’t shared what she said or did to these guys, but she is angry that some of the slogans she has seen for Breast Cancer Awareness seem to focus on saving the breast rather than saving the woman. Her reason for getting her postmastectomy breasts tattooed was this: “I didn’t want my pre-cancer body back, but I wanted the body I have to be mine.” We are making progress with breast cancer treatments and many lives are being saved through earlier diagnosis and better awareness of the symptoms and the importance of regular breast examination by medical professionals and by women of their own breasts. We still have some way to go with our emotional and cultural response to women with breast cancer, but there are survivors out there who are forging a new path for this journey. They are the everyday heroines of their own lives – please applaud them.

The Pink Ink Fund

Over the summer of 2016, both Facebook and Instagram have come under fire for banning several images of women who have chosen bold tattoos as a way of boosting the shattered self-image that many women feel after the removal of one or both breasts. Combine this with the hair loss, weight gain and myriad other side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and it is understandable that women need to find something, anything, that helps them reclaim their femininity, their sexuality and their sense of personal power. Getting inked is one way that people, well or unwell, define their individuality, so why not women with breast cancer.

Nikki Black

Twenty-five year-old LA-based comedian, Nikki Black, had a double mastectomy in 2015 and her response was to cover her scars with tattoos. She explains her decision as a way to “regain control of her body,” and hopes her tattooed breasts help to give women on a similar journey “a positive outlook.” During her chemotherapy treatment

EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER

is Vital

“Screening mammography remains important for the early detection of breast cancer and women aged 50-74 should participate in regular screening every two years. Increased breast cancer risk if: The risk increases with age: About 80 per cent of all breast cancers are found in women over the age of 50.

SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER

Initially, breast cancer may not result in any symptoms. A lump may be too small for you to feel manually or cause any unusual changes. Often, an abnormal area turns up on a mammogram, which then leads to further testing. There are symptoms that could be suspicious: A physical change in the breast, such as a lump, a thickening or a change in its size or shape. Changes in the nipple such as retraction (pulling in of the nipple) or fluid that comes out on its own without squeezing. An inflammatory change, such as redness or hardening of the breast. A lump in the underarm lymph nodes. You should see a doctor right away if any of the previous sign occur .

38

Factors that slightly increase your risk of developing breast cancer: - Previous Breast Cancer - Early Menstruation or Late Menopause - First Pregnancy after the age of 30 or never having had children - Benign Breast Disease - Hormone Replacement Therapy - Oral Birth Control - Being Overweight or Obese - Exposure to Radiation - Family History or BRCA Mutations It is always possible that even though your breast feels normal, a screening test will show an abnormality. These tests are designed to find hidden diseases. If any of these apply to you, discuss your situation with your doctor. Reduce your risk of Breast Cancer - early detection saves lives.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Our doctors recommend the following breast cancer screening guidelines A monthly breast self-examination (BSE) beginning at age 20. If you are at average risk: • Annual clinical breast examination (CBE) beginning at age 25 • Annual mammography beginning at age 40 If you have a family history of breast cancer: • CBE every three to six months starting at the same time as the earliest diagnosis in your family. • Annual mammography starting no later than ten years before the age of the earliest diagnosis in the family (but not earlier than age 25 and not later than age 40). • Consider annual MRI and mammography at alternating six-month intervals

A BREAST CANCER SURVEILLANCE PLAN CUSTOMIZED FOR YOU If we find that you’re at increased risk for breast cancer, we’ll develop a long-term plan customized specifically for you. Depending on your risk factors, the plan may include: • Screening you for breast cancer at intervals that make sense for your level of risk. • Depending on your situation, we can use ultrasound, digital mammography, contrast enhanced mammography, and breast MRI, if it’s determined that these might be valuable in identifying very early tumors in your breasts.

• Educating you on how to check your breasts properly for changes (selfexamination). • Discussing with you the role of chemoprevention, or medications available to help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. • Advising you on other risk factors for breast cancer, such as lifestyle choices involving things like diet and exercise. Breast cancer survival rates have increased, and the number of deaths steadily has been declining, which is largely due to earlier detection.

“Many times breast cancers are discovered through routine screening of people who have no symptoms or outward evidence of disease.”

WHY YOUR

HEART

Loves

STEADY STATE CARDIO

T

here are many different ways to improve the health of your heart through exercise.

One method that has been around for centuries in endurance training and combat sports like boxing is long steady distance (LSD) or cardiac output training. In recent years this type of training has received criticism and people have shunned it in favour of higher intensity intervals, but this is a mistake when it comes to developing a healthy heart as cardiac output works in a way that other methods simply do not.

40

Cardiac output training works to increase stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped out with each beat) by increasing the size of the left ventricle of the heart (the chamber of the heart that pumps oxygenated blood around the body). By keeping your heart rate in a particular range (120-150 beats per minute) over an extended period of time (30 – 90 minutes) the chambers of your heart fill repeatedly with large volumes of blood. The walls of the left side of heart respond to this stimulus by stretching and you gradually end up with a larger left ventricular cavity. The result is a lower

resting heart rate, lower exercising heart rates, and a healthier more efficient heart overall. This is not to discount the importance of higher intensity methods for improving heart health but you can’t replace the cardiac output method with 10-20 minutes of intervals and expect to see the same results and benefits. The main reason for this is that once the heart rate goes above approximately 150 beats per minute (bpm) it’s beating too fast for the chambers to fill completely.

!

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

This means the walls of the left ventricle do not get stretched and you don’t stimulate the same adaptation. Cardiac output training is a great option for people who have a high resting heart rate (70bpm or above) as it will help to lower it to a healthier level (60bpm or below). It’s also perfect for those who are new to training or coming back to it after a long break. You can use any mode of low intensity exercise to complete a cardiac output session such as jogging, biking, swimming, and skipping or circuits as long as the heart rate stays in the correct range (120-150 beats per minute). This type of training can be used 1-3 times per week and each session should last 30 – 90 minutes. It’s best to increase duration gradually over a few weeks. You can use this method to build a good base of fitness before you try some more intense methods or you can use it concurrently with higher intensity training on different days. Either way your heart will benefit from this type of training in a way that other methods simply do not provide.

A SEASONAL

Change

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well. Whether you want a whole new hair look or just a subtle update, get a head start as Jonathan takes us though this season’s hair trends. From ultra-voluminous hair and finger waves to dark moody hues and creamy blonde tresses.

Diana Von Furstenburg

Come to think of it I would like to request a meeting with all the big colour houses so we can discuss inventing some kind of technology which would allow me to perm EVERYONE’S hair without them looking like the back end of a tram smash. As I have spent the last 20 years bleaching the hell out of my clients’ hair, the damage that perming would cause is just not worth the result. I need a perm solution which gives the results I am after but doesn’t damage the hair. Is that too much to ask? I often think when I see all these girls wandering around with curlers in their hair, in the words of my mother, “If you had a bit o’ perm in that, love you’d get longer out o’ it”.

RAISE THE VOLUME

History repeats itself throughout life, it always has done and this season’s hair trends reflect just that. A/W16 is officially the season of the curl; throw in texture and volume and we have been taken back to the 1980s (not that I ever really left). I don’t think we are in the zone of scrunched nightclub glam but - be warned - we are not too far from it. Hair at Vivienne Westwood was voluminous and wavy, Diane Von Furstenberg featured disco waves and Alexander Wang channelled 80s rock. To achieve a similar result to Wang, emphasize the natural hair by letting it air dry, then spray hair once dry with Redken Wax Blast 10 €17,25.

Isabel Marant brought back the perm, much to my delight. You see the big curly blow dry that everyone is currently requesting would last much longer with a perm as a base; I like to call it ‘style support’. Yes, I know - when wet you tend to look more like a King Charles Spaniel, but when blow dried out and smoothed you will get the look that you are after and it will last.

“I often think when I see all these girls wandering around with curlers in their hair, in the words of my mother, “If you had a bit o’ perm in that, love you’d get longer out o’ it” 50

RIDING THE WAVE Finger waves popped up in all four fashion cities and in varying guises - from lacquered curls to gently undulating fringes. At Stella McCartney the waves were soft and gentle, Blumarine opted for a deep side part, lots of gel and a comb shaped S formation. At Marc Jacobs the finger waves were super defined and glossy. They had a distinct gothic-meets-1920s flapper feel. What was sleek and centre-parted on top was modernised by leaving the length of the hair loose so you’re left with these two very different, very sculptural textures. If you want to try this at home, good luck! Start with Redken Stay High 18 €17,25 to create the waves and Redken Forceful 23 €14,25 hairspray to set them. TO DYE FOR What’s a change of season without a hair colour refresh to usher it in? After a few years of cool blonde shades popping up all over, warm blondes are making a comeback. It’s so radiant, it lights up your whole look - even if you’re not wearing any make-up!

TAMARA’S TREASURES Jewellery designer TAMARA COMOLLI sells through upmarket boutiques worldwide and now her work is glittering at the Marbella Club Hotel

TAMARA COMOLLI was born in Germany but raised in France, Gibraltar and Spain. Since she founded her Fine Jewellery Collection in 1992, she has gathered a number of major awards for her work, including a De Beers Award for Design. The fact that her first flagship store appeared in The Hamptons, where America’s wealthy, as well as the international jet set, spend their summers points to a brand that exudes style and taste. Now her line is available at the Marbella Club hotel, a fitting venue for a designer who is considered to be amongst the worlds finest.

“My creations are timeless and it’s easy for my clients to grow their collection. They can still wear pieces they bought years ago and combine them with my new creations to produce a totally fresh look.”

Worlds of Colour

Tamara loves gemstones and they are a key feature of her jewellery. She calls this element of her collections, ‘Color Stories’ and she has inspirational names for all of them: “Candy, Caribbean, Indian Summer, Rainforest, Cashmere, Mandarin or Cinnamon have become famous interpretations for my combinations of gems over the years. Within those worlds, my clients choose their favorite designs, be it in rose, yellow or white gold.”

Brand Philosophy Tamara’s brand philosophy is based on creating pieces that resonate with the customer’s unique personality and she endeavours to bring freshness and individuality to her collections. She avoids drawing on others’ design work and focuses on timelessness rather than trends. A TAMARA COMOLLI piece is never just for summer, the beach or eveningwear, it is for any time, anywhere. She designs exclusively for women and endeavours to bring a sense of fun to her jewellery, although it is never the kind of kitsch humour found in other jewellery brands; the typical TAMARA COMOLLI woman likes her jewels to be playful but understated, and casual but still elegant. When she started her line, Tamara wanted to create a brand that stood for ‘unusual’ as well as redefining the idea of ‘fine jewellery’. Her aim was to get away from the type of over dressy jewellery that got its status simply because it was expensive, or it was produced by a major fashion brand. She felt this style of jewellery was soulless, whereas her collections are always injected with spirit and individuality. As she says: “My creations are timeless and it’s easy for my clients to grow their collection. They can still wear pieces they bought years ago and combine them with my new creations to produce a totally fresh look.”

The 2016 Collections Her current work includes the PAX collection (Latin for peace), which is both her message to the world and, she hopes, a small contribution to making the world a better place. Others that are new this year include the CAPRI Collection, the FAIRY Collection and the Mother of Pearl INDIA Leaf. These new INDIA Leaf pendants, made from Mother-of-Pearl symbolise “the incomparable love of a mother’s heart,” and are based on a traditional Indian design. Ten percent of the sales of the India Leaf collection goes to the charity SOS Children’s Villages, which has been providing loving family homes to orphaned or abandoned children in 125 countries since 1949. Tamara’s Biker Chic collection has just been added recently and is also proving popular as it works well for winter themes. tamaracomolli.com

Santorini is one of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea, devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C., which forever shaped its rugged landscape and villages. So whether you arrive by boat or plane, be prepared for one of the most incredible sights - hundreds of little white houses perched on top of this massive cliff. While walking through the marbled streets of Oia - Santorini’s most scenic and charming town - the royal blue water ombrés into different shades of turquoise. This silk kaftan by Sena Design, reflecting the town’s beautiful tones, was Dominique’s choice for enjoying the island’s majestic beauties under the hot Greek sun. Paired with a wide brimmed sun hat, a striking blue custom made belt from SSTRÖM By Gem, contrast coloured jewellery and matching sunglasses, this breezy outfit was perfect for discovering hidden boutique shops, cute cafes, churches and the homes of locals all nestled into this quaint but lively village. Looking back, Greece was definitely a summer highlight. The authentic and genuine feel of the island is a source of relaxation, deep admiration, and of course, undeniable inspiration.

The sun-bleached peach, pink and terracota colours were the very tones that inspired Andrea’s outfit, combining perfectly with the perfumed flowers that naturally decorate this romantic town. Comfort is always a key element in Andrea’s wardrobe, so this maxidress was perfect for walking up and down rocky steps while looking chic! Flooded with stylish tourists from all around the world Positano is, without a doubt, the place to be when looking for a destination that combines elegance, style and a traditional taste of the real Italy.

At sundown, the Valley of the Moon is the place to be in the heart of the desert. Its lunar landscape becomes even more striking as the light changes and the rocks are set aflame. For a shot of adrenaline, sunboarding down giant dunes in the spectacular setting of Death Valley is a must-do! And as for night time, the Atacama Desert is one of the best places in the world to stargaze. With cloudless desert nights and an absence of light pollution, it’s clear to see why some of the most important observatories on earth are located here. Whether you’re a wild traveller or enjoy taking in the peaceful scenery at your own pace, a comfortable outfit is a must for all the activities these types of destinations have to offer. For Andrea and Dominique, comfort and functionality aren’t synonymous with sacrificing style and elegance, so don’t be afraid to create a sporty-chic look combining a pair of cool neon trainers with a beautiful slick outfit, like these black ensembles with silver details from SSTRÖM By Gem. And, don’t forget your stylish swimsuit when floating in the natural salt pools, where swimming is virtually impossible! The only option is to lay back and to take in the breathtaking views of the immense Salar de Atacama and the distant Andes.

SUPER SUNDAYS AT SMALLWORLD We attended…

The scrumptious launch of the Sunday Roast at Smallworld. Now that autumn is here and the temperatures are cooler, there are few meals more appetising than a traditional British Sunday roast dinner with all the trimmings.

We thoroughly enjoyed…

The tasty meat, the roast potatoes and the side dishes – this is a meal that tastes so much better when you don’t have to cook it yourself. We’d advise you to book your table early as this is going to be a popular Sunday destination from now on.

We sang along with…

Robbie Williams Tribute, Ollie Hughes and Michael Buble Tribute, Peet Rothwell, two of the Coast’s best-loved performers, who kept us and our fellow guests entertained throughout the afternoon. It’s a great way to relax on a Sunday – dinner and live music!

A big thanks and congratulations to…

The Smallworld team who produced such great afternoon of food and fun. Sunday Roast is available from 1pm – 5pm every Sunday. Please book in advance.

CHICAGO PARTY AT MARBELLA’S CASINO We attended…

The inspiring ‘Chicago Party’ in the lovely gardens of the Casino Marbella that recreated the Golden Age of Chicago ‘Gangsters’ and celebrated the end of a week of international films

We had great fun…

Studying the inventive period costumes that the guests had put together, and the stylish, and rather realistic, ambience of the setting that made us all feel as if we had stepped back into the 1930s. Satin gloves, pearl chokers, feather headdresses, long raincoats, fedoras and chalk striped suits, as well as the odd violin case and a vintage car featured in the look of the period.

We sipped on…

A tipple made from the finest bourbon, a drink that is particularly associated with the gangster lifestyle of that decade and contributed to the authenticity of the party’s recreation of a scene from the film ‘Chicago Party.”

A big thanks and congratulations to…

The team at Casino Marbella for hosting such a glamorous and fun party. It was a night to remember and we hope you’ll do it again some day.

The fabulous two-day Food & Wine Festival at D-Wine where guests had an unrivalled opportunity to experience six unique wine and food pairings, plus 12 of the best Spanish red and white wines accompanied by the most classic of Spain’s tapas dishes.

We were thrilled by…

The opportunity to learn more about Spain’s exemplary range of wines and understand the difference between whites from Albarinho, Godello, Verdejo, Viura and Moscatel, and appreciate its finest reds including Tempranillo Garnacha, Monastrell, Tinta de Toro, Mencia and Bobal.

We were delighted…

To see the restaurant and bodega filled with like-minded wine enthusiasts from Marbella who enjoyed it every bit as much as we did.

We’re looking forward to…

The new vintage release of Pago El Espino from Los Aguilares in Ronda and the arrival of the Castro y Gonzalez jamon iberico and La Lachera de Burdeos cheeses at D-Wine.

A big thanks and congratulations …

To the D-Wine team and its knowledgeable sommeliers for hosting an event that was as educational as it was entertaining. We can’t wait for your ‘festival of bubbly’ in December!

We were thrilled… To meet the special guest for the evening, former Formula 1 racing star Niki Lauda who launched the first ball on the roulette wheel. They say fortune favours the brave, and he certainly is somebody who could be described as filled with courage.

We enjoyed… The amazing food, the live music and dancing that every guest enjoyed. Although, we’d have to say that the best sounds of the evening were those of the ‘kerching’ of the slot machines and the excited shouts around the roulette table.

Congratulations and a big thanks… To the team at Casino Admiral San Roque and FIMMO Car Gallery for an out of this world evening.

PERFECT POISE The new Panamera Turbo is the best sports limousine in the world

90

Torque Talk

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the PORSCHE PANAMERA

91

Torque Talk

I

use the term best sports limousine rather than sports saloon, because at 5,049mm long and 1,935mm wide, Porsche’s new Panamera is roughly 50mm shorter, but about 40mm wider than the normal wheelbase versions of BMW’s 7-Series and the Mercedes S-Class. And while it is even faster fast in a straight line and better handling in the bends than the smaller BMW M5 and E63 AMG sports saloons thanks to 4WD and rear steering, at the other end of the scale it also beats them hands down in the comfort stakes. In intent the new Panamera Turbo is arguably most like an Audi S8 Plus, but unlike the similarly cossetting big Audi, Porsche’s latest four-door autobahn stormer can also hold its own against world-class sports cars in the bends. First however, a short trip down Porsche memory lane. Aesthetically, the original Panamera suffered from a severe case of hump-backed whale syndrome. However, the design team did a good job of mitigating this with the 2013 facelift, and larger wheels also help the cause. In comparison, the new car’s proportions are so much better that it makes you wonder why the car did not turn out this way from day one. A far better balanced design that retains the Panamera DNA, the new car is sleek and head turning attractive rather than bordering on awkward.

The big redesign takes more 911-like design cues in its roofline and rear side windows, while structural changes that include lengthening the wheelbase by 30mm to 2,950mm, dropping the floorpan and moving the front wheels ahead slightly to shorten the front overhang, have created a longer wheelbase and an interior with more leg and headroom that easily accommodates four 1.93m tall occupants in comfort. The result is an even more practical package that has more space for its occupants, a 10-percent larger boot, and looks a whole lot better than its predecessor. The Turbo has a Cd of 0.3, with 0.29 for models with smaller wheels. Over the last seven years the original Panamera has done well, fully justifying its business case. Since it made its debut at the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show, 150,000 copies have gone to homes all over the world. The long wheelbase version, originally created for China as part of the 2013 facelift, has also proven desirable in other markets too. Michael Mauer and his team’s process of taking Porsche’s design language to the next level opened a few eyes along the way. While the designs of some competitors are becoming fussier, the latest crop of Porsches starting with the 991 Carrera and 981 Boxster, have actually achieved an all-time simplicity of form, and by inference are smoother and more timeless. And as form follows function they are also more aerodynamically efficient.

Along the way, the team also introduced strong design cues that tie the whole model range together with a distinctive Porsche family DNA that also emphasises the sporting intent of each car. The slim tail-lights and four-point LED daytime running lights integrated into the LED matrix headlamp clusters are one example, the 918 Spyder steering wheel and sports seat concept another. Debuting on the 718 Boxster and Cayman models, the black strip across the tail is the new home for the ‘Porsche’ lettering on the tail, while the illuminated red strip, originally used to distinguish the Carrera 4S, is now a Panamera design feature also lit by LED technology. The cabin is a masterpiece of fusion between modern styling, traditional materials and cutting edge telematics. It is also beautifully crafted from high-quality materials. The only downside is the fact that the sexy black iPad like touch surfaces on the console soon pick up fingerprints and have to be constantly cleaned to look their best. The 40/2/40 split folding rear seat arrangement is very practical and boosts luggage capacity from the already capacious 495-litre boot to 1,304 litres. The new steel and aluminium hybrid structure is stiffer than before and also lighter. It is based on the new MSB (Modular Standard Drivetrain) platform Porsche developed for the VW Group and will underpin the next Bentley Continental GT. The Panamera is made in Porsche’s Leipzig factory and two wheelbase variants are possible, so expect a LWB version for China and other territories and maybe even a Tourer. Thanks to greater demands of passive and active safety, not to mention the plethora of new assistance systems, each model is very slightly heavier, with the Turbo weighing 25kg more at 1,995kg. When you are in a car travelling down a bumpy road it is hard to judge exactly how hard the suspension is working to keep everything on an even keel. Following a similar car down the road to watch its body and wheel movement and comparing it with what the seat of your pants is telling you is thus a most revealing exercise. At the other end of the chassis performance scale, watching a car being driven around a racetrack, the notorious Nürburgring-Nordschleife in particular, is very revealing of its poise and compo-

93

94

Torque Talk sure right on the bald limit and beyond. I did the former for a few kilometers on the autobahn and then some country roads around the Tegernsee area south of Munich, with another Panamera Turbo. In Normal and Sport modes, it was clear that the body stayed on an even keel, the big 21-inch wheels rising and falling under the car as the electronically controlled three-chamber air suspension system with PASM worked in real time to keep road undulations from upsetting the cars occupants. With around 60-percent more air volume than the previous two-chamber design the new system has a much greater spread of abilities both in comfort at one end and sporty performance at the other. Add the PDCC Sport, which includes PTV Plus electro-mechanical active roll compensation and you have a system that supports superior driving dynamics across the board. Comfort is more than just being possessed of a good primary and secondary ride. NVH is also a crucial element in a car capable of covering big distances and delivering its occupants in a fresh and unruffled state, and here Porsche has really pushed the boat out. Using a layer of special damping foam inside a tyre to address low road noise is a technology introduced by Continental in 2015 for that paragon of refined travel, the Mercedes-Maybach. The use of a foam layer bonded to the inside of the tyre carcass above the tread results in a reduction of around 5dB in its cabin compared to the already quiet S-Class. Dr. Manfred Harrer, VP of Chassis Development, explained that Porsche has adopted this technology with its tyre partners. “Continental, Michelin, Pirelli and Yokohama supply us with 20 and 21-inch summer tyres and 21-inch all-seasons tyres with this feature,” he said. The entry-level Panamera wears 9.0J and 10.5J x 19-inch alloys with 265/45ZR19 and 295/40ZR19 tyres. Standard Turbo footwear is 9.5J and 11.5J x 20-inch wheels with 275/40ZR20 and 315/35ZR20 tyres. The largest option is 9.5J and 11.5J x 21inch wheels, shod with 275/35ZR21 and 315/30ZR21 rubber. “This road noise damping technology normally uses a layer of foam bonded to the inner surface of the tyre opposite the tread,” he explained. “However, the Panamera Turbo is a much faster car with lower profile tyres than the MercedesMaybach, and in the course of high-speed testing, we and our tyre partners found that the higher centrifugal force that causes the centre of the tread to bow out caused problems with the band of acoustic damping foam. The solution was to split the

95

Torque Talk foam lining into two sections placed either side of the centre instead.” A production spec Panamera Turbo with a bolt-in cage, race seat and full harnesses to protect the driver in case of an accident was clocked at 7 min 38 sec on the Nürburgring. To put that in perspective, the mighty 1,380kg, 612hp Carrera GT is only 6.0 sec faster than this big 550hp sports limo. How times have changed! The way the new Panamera Turbo takes the bends on the ‘Ring, hunkered down and looking really solid in its set and poise is most impressive. Where the car rides kerbs, it seems hardly deflected, simply rising slightly on the inside corner and carrying on full bore. Flying over crests you can see that the suspension travel in Sport+ mode is shorter, and while the suspension obviously extends, it comes straight back down, regaining its composure in an instant. On the multi-angle video footage, the Panamera looked stable and perfectly poised throughout its record run on the world’s toughest racetrack. The Panamera Turbo I drove was to the same spec as that record setting pre-production test car, with the 4D Chassis Control comprised of active air suspension (standard on the Turbo), rear-axle-steering, PDCC Sport and PTV Plus and the Sport Chrono package. A basic steel suspension system will be along later for the other models, but apart from the springing medium, all versions use double wishbones in front and a multi-link system at the rear. A clear indication of the Panamera Turbo’s sportier intent is the front suspension tower brace missing from lesser models. Technically, the new Panamera is a world away from the original in the depth and breadth of its on-board systems. Hydraulic air suspension systems cannot react as quickly as the Porsche engineers would like, and so tend to be more reactive than realtime. Electronics is the only answer, but the instantaneous reaction time and significant power draw of the electronically controlled three-chamber adaptive air suspension requires the right quiescent current and headroom in the system to cope with moving the significant masses involved rapidly and continuously. This cannot be achieved with a conventional 12-Volt system, so the new Panamera is the first Porsche vehicle to adopt a partial 48-Volt electrical system for specific applications such as the

suspension. At the same time, the huge volume of data transfer requires a partial FlexRay high-speed network linked to the conventional CAN-BUS system. The electric power steering system is a closed loop system, while unlike the 918 Spyder and 991 Turbo and GT3 models, whose rear-wheel-steering is mechanically linked, the system operates each rear wheel of the physically much wider Panamera independently. While the bi-turbo petrol V6 and V6 and V8 diesel engines are Audi derived, the new bi-turbo petrol V8 was developed in-house. The petrol 440hp/550Nm V6 and 550hp/770Nm V8 are 14.0kg and 9.5kg lighter than their predecessors respectively, the V8 being built in Zuffenhausen, and the V6 at Audi’s engine plant in Győr, Hungary. Although these motors come from different teams, in a logical VW Group cost saving strategy they share the same 90-degree included angle as well as their 86.0mm stroke. The 2,894cc V6 uses 84.5mm pistons, while the slightly larger 86.0mm bore of the 3,996cc V8 makes it a square engine, albeit with the same bore centres as its smaller brother. Mobil 1 continues to be Porsche’s oil of choice, the only specification difference being 0W-30 or 0W-40 depending on market. The only pure Porsche engine in the new line-up, the all-alloy V8 is the star of the show. “The new V8 weighs 9.5kg less than its predecessor and is very compact for its power output,” explained Dr. Markus Rettenmaier, Manager of Transmission Development. “This allows it to sit far back in the engine bay for a 55/45-percent front/rear weight distribution.” “The motor uses the ‘hot-sideinside’ configuration with two Borg-Warner turbochargers nestled in the Vee between the cylinder banks,” he continued. “The shorter ram-air intake paths deliver better response, quicker light-off of the catalysts in cold-start for lower emissions, and better packaging in the lower engine bay.”

Torque Talk

Using direct fuel-injection, and a compression ratio of 10.1:1, the VarioCam Plus V8 uses 1.3 bar of boost, with no overboost facility, to generate 550hp between 5,750 and 6,000rpm, with 770Nm of torque from 1,950 to 4,500rpm. The rev limiter is set at 6,800rpm.

on the ferocity scale with no drama at all. That makes the Panamera Turbo deceptive in its speed gathering, and just when you dare to think that you are not going as fast as you could, a glance down at the very big numbers on the speedometer becomes an eyebrow raising reality check.

Translated into stopwatch numbers, the Panamera Turbo digs in and rockets to 100km/h in 3.6 sec, with 160km/h and 200km/h coming up in just 8.1 sec and 12.7 sec respectively, and a top speed of 306km/h. These are genuine supercar numbers and to put them in perspective, the mighty GT3 RS covers the 0-100km/h and 0-200km/h sprints in 3.3 and 10.9 sec respectively, while clocking 7 min 20 sec around the ‘Ring.

Several times on unrestricted sections of autobahn I found numbers well past 270km/h staring back at me after what seemed like a mere few seconds on full throttle. The refinement of the lusty bi-turbo V8, the seamless upshifts of the ZF eightspeed automatic gearbox, the rock solid aerodynamic and chassis stability contribute to this feeling of unassailable supremacy both in a straight line and when the road becomes twisty.

To help fuel economy and emissions, the engine features cylinder deactivation via two-stage, hydraulically actuated sliding cams on the intake and exhaust camshafts.

With 422hp from 3,500 to 5,000rpm, and a whopping 850Nm of torque between 1,000 to 3,250rpm, the bi-turbo V8 diesel in the Panamera 4S is a real torque machine. It covers the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.1 sec and reaches 160km/h in 10.7 sec, with 200km/h coming up in 16.8 sec, making it the fastest production diesel car money can buy. With a claimed combined consumption of 6.8 L/100km, it is also very economical.

All this efficient engineering certainly pays off in the real All this efficient world, and in a morning of engineering certainly pays mixed driving, which included off in the real and high-speed world, and in town a morning of mixed driving, autobahn work, I achieved an which included town and average of 12.3L/100km high-speed autobahn work, I achieved an average of 12.3L/100km (22.9mpg Imperial or 19.1mpg US). Although Porsche claims 9.4 L/100km mixed for the EU standard test, this is still impressive real world economy for a two-ton car propelled by a 550hp V8. The Panamera Turbo is nothing if not subtle in the way it gathers speed. Yes, there is a deep V8 growl from up front when your right foot is buried in the carpet. Yes, there is a sporty backfire on the over-run when Sport or Sport+ modes are selected for the drivetrain, but what you don’t feel is a rabid lunge for the horizon. Despite the fact that the 770Nm of torque is dispensed through all four wheels, there are still moments in the lower gears that you swear you can feel the big low profile tyres rotating on their wheels under full steam ahead in the lower gears. But the thrust is progressive and smooth, almost understated

However, as good as this powerhouse motor is and despite the fact that it revs to its 5,000rpm peak very smoothly and rapidly, its innate character is more suited to the heavier Cayenne. The 550hp petrol V8 feels the more natural engine pairing for the Panamera chassis, and the Turbo is a totally homogenous package. I expected the second generation Panamera to be good, but the depth and breadth of the new cars dynamic abilities took me by surprise. Combining near limousine like ride quality with superior handling to the smaller and lighter sports saloons from the class below was always going to be a pretty tall order. But the engineers have succeeded spectacularly, and owners of the new Panamera no longer have to apologise for the styling either!

racing and locating assets is a particularly difficult task to perform without seeking professional help. Conflict are global leaders in using investigative and surveillance techniques to help track hidden assets in most parts of the world and discover to whom they are registered. Whether it’s UK property or bank accounts, or property owned overseas and foreign assets, their exact location can often be either unknown or deliberately hidden. Conflict also traces the source of shares, bonds, investments, trusts, funds and corporate assets. All evidence and asset search findings are compiled into a detailed report which is legally admissible in any court proceedings.

ONLINE AND ON THE GROUND Conflict Marbella director Mike LaCorte says their investigative resources go through a number of phases. “We will always begin by assessing and compiling a report from what we can uncover from Open Source Intelligence. This allows us to drill down to understand more about the subject we are investigating and also discovering which jurisdictions are likely to hold the assets we are tracing.”

“We search many different databases; from property registrations and credit checks to bankruptcy, anti-fraud and even private plane or boat registry checks. Depending on the subject, we can also delve further into potential leads in the country or countries of interest.” Although all the initial searches are made using publicly available information conducted legally within the parameters of the UK’s Data Protection Act, only those with investigative and intelligence experience in asset tracing will then be able to take that forward to the next stage. He added: “Once we have identified where hidden assets may be held, we are now in a position to further explore the assets identified in a particular jurisdiction with the objective of obtaining some form of documentation that links it to the subject of our enquiry. This could involve ordering documents related to offshore companies or deploying field agents in the country concerned to examine registries locally.” With the background checks fully completed, the investigation can now continue on the ground. HOW DO YOU RECOVER THE HIDDEN ASSETS? After enough evidence has been gathered to link the assets to the subject, Conflict can then approach the person concerned. “The final stage of our role can then involve initiating a meeting with the subject where we present them with information of what we have discovered. owed. If that is unsuccessful, we can then work with legal support to freeze the assets with a view to recovery via the courts.” “Conflict has worked on some fairly complex cases in the past with banks concerned about their exposure to certain debts or individuals involved in a divorce who may have had a partner leading a double life. THAT’S

ENTERTAINMENT! By Ian Kuah

I

n Philip Kaufman’s movie adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s ‘The Right Stuff’, we see President Eisenhower crawling on all fours trying to plug in a recalcitrant film projector, the workings of which further frustrate Ike and his team as they try to figure out how to beat the Soviets in the space race. Such episodes of techno-frustration are the reason I personally prefer classical five star hotels to so-called modern boutique hotels with smart systems whose bespoke interfaces are often not transparent to a first time user. Despite being a techie, I find this an acute annoyance when I am just staying one night on business, and have neither the time nor inclination to figure out how everything works. Thus technology can be both a blessing and a curse. Done well, it helps to streamline our workflow and release more potential leisure time. Done badly, it is a frustrating time thief.

116

Because they tend to be cash rich and time poor, wealthy people tend to shy away from anything that is excessively complicated as it is wasteful of time, the commodity along with health that money cannot buy. The well known acronym, KISS, for “Keep It Simple, Stupid” is a design principle noted by the US Navy in 1960, and states that most systems work best when kept simple and uncomplicated. Simplicity should therefore be a key design goal, and unnecessary complexity avoided. Simplicity and successful integration are the linchpins of any home theatre or home electronic system built By DHS for their clients. Founded in Spain in 2002 by Chris Huntley and Tim Milne, DHS was originally the acronym for Direct Home Satellites, the technology on which the company was founded. As the market for home cinema and smart home automation systems became more sophisticated here on the

Coast, DHS evolved accordingly, and in 2005, the company was rebranded Digital Home Solutions, with the emphasis on solutions. While DHS carries some well known audio brands like JBL speakers, and now the high-end Steinway Lyngdorf systems, whose association with one of the world’s two most highly regarded piano legends says it all, this company is not about high-end audio. “Many Northern European customers are familiar with high-end audio in their home countries,” Chris explained. “In Spain this is the case in Madrid and Barcelona, and the reason why almost all the Spanish importers and retailers of American, British and German high-end brands are located in those two cities.” “Here, on the Costa del Sol however, most of our clients are looking for entertainment systems for their second or third homes, and these are almost exclusively based around home cinema rather than two-channel audio,” he said.

HOME COUTURE

“So although there is a significant worldwide revival in vinyl, we are not really seeing this trend here in Marbella, and are seldom asked to provide record players.”

Simplicity and successful integration are the linchpins of any home theatre or home electronic system built By DHS for their clients.

With home cinema comes the requirement for one touch operation of powered screens, curtains and lighting. And as a natural extension, clients began to ask for the rest of their homes to also be automated. The latest systems even allow you to operate your home lighting, heating, air-conditioning and check your security cameras over the Internet when you are travelling or sitting comfortably in your other home on another continent. “We have a clever gadget that can turn on lights, activate the TV, and even switch channels at odd but scheduled intervals to make it look to outsiders that the house is occupied,” Chris explained.

117

HOME COUTURE

“Thus it does not just activate at fixed intervals for a fixed time everyday, but can be set to vary times and make it look like there really is someone in. We call it logical randomisation.” On the subject of security, more hightech solutions like fingerprint entry are part and parcel of the latest entry systems, and these can be programmed to also switch on the lights and open the blinds upon entry. If all this sounds very complex, the key to simplifying any sophisticated system is successful integration, something that requires experience and a conceptual understanding. This is a concept mere electricians struggle to grasp, and is something that Chris and Tim set out to make their life’s work. “Integration and operational simplicity is a passion with us,” he explained. “When you get off a plane and arrive at your holiday villa, you are in no frame of mind to fight with the technology, so our goal is to remove all the heavy lifting from our clients shoulders so that they can spend 100-percent of their time enjoying their time on the ground. More than just entertainment, once a theatre or entertainment room is finished, families find that it brings them together more often, and that is a good thing.”

Specialist home automation, audio and home entertainment are very fast moving technologies, and industry professionals need to visit international shows like CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas and Munich High-End, which Chris and Tim do.

118

HOME COUTURE

One of the biggest aids to a simplified experience is the Control4 unit. “We can effectively replace all the separate remote controllers in the house with this single unit, and you can have one in every room if you want,” said Chris. “It is our number one best selling gadget, easy for us to programme, and easy for the client to use. We have sold over 500 of these, and find that once we show someone how it works the device practically sells itself.” “When we hand over an installation, we give our client a 10 minute tutorial on how everything works, which should be enough,” said Chris. “We recently did an installation for a client who admitted that he struggled to input addresses into his mobile phone. He told us he was going to have some friends over and dreaded pushing the wrong buttons and embarrassing himself while showing off the home theatre and automated systems we had installed. We took it as a good sign when we did not hear from him that weekend!” “The methodology behind this is both repeatable and scalable,” said Chris. “We have instances of clients wanting the same control systems in more than one house in different countries. This way they can move from their home in London to their villa in Marbella for instance, and not have to get their heads around operating the entertainment system and smart home systems.” “Surprise and delight are what we aim to deliver to our clients, and the best reward is repeat business and recommendations,” Chris said. “We have clients who return to us again and again as they upgrade their villas, and many tell their friends about us. We would like to think that our personal service and the quality of our work is responsible for this.” Specialist home automation, audio and home entertainment are very fast moving technologies, and industry professionals need to visit international shows like CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, Munich High and ISE in Amsterdam (Integrated Systems Europe), which Chris and Tim do. Thus, they are always au fait with the cutting edge ideas and technologies that help their clients save time and effort. At the sharp end of the business, the process of designing and building a home entertainment space is not exactly

straightforward. “Dealing with the client and their architect and interior designer can be a tussle, especially when the other professional parties are not enlightened on the possibilities of the latest technologies,” said Chris. “Interior designers hate seeing anything that is not pretty. In such cases we can use in-wall or on-wall rather than floor standing speakers in a home cinema system. We can help to educate the designers along the way, but the final decision always rests with the client.” A successful home theatre installation is designed and built in a logical and well proven way. “Acoustically, the best solution for a dedicated home theatre is to build a room within a room,” Chris explained. “This allows us to hide all the acoustic absorption and reflection materials and wiring within the cavity. In an ideal situation we also like to get the power supply right and run a dedicated mains spur to the room for the audio equipment, thus avoiding interference from any other electrical

equipment in the house. The improvement in sound quality and picture is measurable.” “We produce detailed plans for our own or the architect’s team of builders and carpenters. These plans contain precise dimensions and material specifications so everyone knows what goes where,” said Chris. The biggest problem is convincing the client to spend the money just to prepare a room this way, even before adding the cost of the equipment. But as Sir Henry Royce, co-founder of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars famously said, “the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.” “Every client has specific ideas and wishes, and it is our job to guide them through the design process and ensure that everything is implemented in a seamless and reliable way,” said Chris. “We use all our experience to ensure that our clients have the best possible experience. We have done our part, when, to quote Steve Jobs, it just works!” dhssoundvisioncontrol.com

s designers we have to rely on our experience and interior design knowledge to create timeless schemes that compliment both the site and the person for whom it was designed. It’s this experience that helps us to make informed decisions and pre-empt what a client will like, often before they know themselves. It’s like having a crystal ball, an instinct, but we aren’t alone in our quest to predict future trends and styles; we have tools of course. Every year we visit the Maison & Objet design show in Paris, a trade expo dedicated to exhibiting the best products and designers from around Europe. The organisers also operate around the globe, headhunting designers and brands and giving them a platform upon which to showcase their creations. Predicting design trends is a constant pursuit and experts are always looking for designers of tomorrow or styles that everybody will want to replicate in their own homes. Rather than scouring the internet for brands or designers, Maison & Objet has cleverly created an amazing trade show allowing these fresh new talents and styles to come together under one (frightfully large) roof. As long as you have comfy shoes and a notepad or three you can walk around the show and interact with the products, touch the lights, sit on the seats and see fabrics in person rather than through a computer screen. Not so fond of the idea of walking for hours and experiencing intense sensory overload? Well, don’t worry, because we went to the show and did it all for you.

Over the years trends have come and gone. Remember the floral sofas that were popular when we were young, before companies like IKEA came along with their Chuck Out the Chintz campaign, which aimed to simplify the way we live and style our homes? In marked contrast, IKEA’s lines were simple, clear and very Scandinavian. It was a novelty that, unlike so many others, didn’t wear off and the brand has gone from strength to strength, with many loyal customers from a broad cross-section of society. Added to the intriguingly simple style were astonishingly affordable prices. In a world where the cost of living is rising at an accelerated rate compared to the average income, IKEA has been the perfect solution for many wanting to improve their homes without denting their wallets. A few other brands followed this lead, careful not to allow simplicity or cheap production to compromise on style. The danger, however is that we all

potentially end up with very similar looking homes with whitewashed wooden floors, white furniture and muted textiles - at one point or another it’s fair to say that most students owned the ‘LACK’ coffee table or something from the ‘MALM’ furniture range. The theme that stood out most from the Maison & Objet show this autumn was a sense of risk taking. Perhaps borne from a decade of white furniture and fairly straight edges, a lot of the products dared to walk the thin line between outrageous and downright bizarre. As a designer, risk

Turmeric

THE NEW SUPER FOOD

COSTA CUISINE

H

ow we do we use ingredients to their best ability and how do we make them work for us in the best possible way? Turmeric is one of those ingredients that unless it is used the right way our bodies will not absorb it fully. Consume turmeric with black pepper. “Adding black pepper to turmeric or turmeric-spiced food enhances curcumin’s bioavailability by 1,000 times, due to black pepper’s hot property called piperine. Without fat, the active component in turmeric, cur cumin also has a difficult time making it past the stomach, into the small intestine, and into the blood where it can offer the greatest benefits. So the best way to use Turemric is by combining it with a pinch of black pepper and gently heating it with a fat my personal choice coconut oil. Turmeric is the new wonder super duper food on the market. Despite its use in

cooking for several thousand years, turmeric continues to surprise researchers in terms of its wide-ranging health benefits. While once focused on anti-inflammatory benefits, decreased cancer risk, and support of detoxification, studies on turmeric intake now include its potential for improving cognitive function, blood sugar balance, and kidney function, as well as lessening the degree of severity associated with certain forms of arthritis and certain digestive disorders. Use of turmeric in recipes can help retain the beta-carotene in certain foods. For example, one study has shown that the beta-carotene in carrots and pumpkins is better retained when those vegetables are cooked using recipes that include turmeric.

HERE ARE 5 SURPRISING USES THAT I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT!

1 2 3 4

May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin. Turmeric may help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

here’s how to use it: 1. SPICE UP YOUR FOOD. Add Turmeric to anything! besides sweets, for a new flavor and a ton of health benefits. You can use turmeric to add some zest to cooked vegetables, eggs, and even smoothies, breakfasts etc. You can also add it to boiling water you’re using to make pasta, rice, soups, and more.

2. DRINK IT AS A TEA. Bring four cups of water to a boil. Add one teaspoon of ground turmeric and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the tea through a fine sieve into a cup, add honey and/or lemon to taste. Or make the famous GOLDEN MILK - google and there be hundreds of recipes on this topic.

3. USE A TURMERIC SUPPLEMENT. Take it as a supplement but make sure it is from a reliable source.

4. MIX IT WITH CASTOR OIL FOR A SKIN DETOX. Castor oil with tumeric powder is a powerful toxin releaser for your skin. For women, it is great to apply to the breast and under arm because it will pull out harmful toxins from the lymph nodes and fat cells of the breast.

FAMOUS CURRY (my style)

This is a dish I have cooked in various different versions and has been loved by everyone that has come across it. Sounds a bit big headed I know, BUT it’s a favourite in our house too. It’s perfect when you have sad vegetables in the fridge that you haven’t had time to cook but also don’t want to throw away.

METHOD

INGREDIENTS Curry Paste

Mustard seeds

2-inch (4 cm) fresh turmeric

1 aubergine

2 shallots

1/4 pumpkin

2-inch (4 cm) ginger

1 sweet potato

2-3 garlic cloves

Olive oil

1 chilli

Salt & pepper

In a hot pan, with olive oil or coconut oil, add base with mustard seeds and some of your curry paste. Let everything heat through and start adding your veggies. Nice big bite size pieces.

Sauce

Cook all until softened, turn heat down to medium and add coconut milk and some salt and pepper to taste.

Base 1 onion 1 tomato 1 stick of celery 1 carrot

132

Start with your curry paste. Amounts depend on the size of your batch, and are not that important so I only going to give you the necessary ingredients.

2-3 cups (360 grams) coconut milk Pinch of Salt & Pepper Top up with a good curry powder

In a blender mix all the curry paste ingredients together until you get a paste. If you have trouble add some liquid or oil. This is again something you can keep in the fridge for quite some time and use.

Leave it to cook together on a low heat for about 15-20 minutes. If you are lacking flavour add a good quality curry paste. The texture of the veggies need to be creamy and soft, and sauce needs to be velvety and incorporated with all of the ingredients! Serve with rice or any other grain. The fried rice goes really well along with the fruit salsa that you can find recipes for in the blog!

Marbella’s

AMERICAN STAR

I

t’s time for a big celebration – in February next year Yanx will have been providing the best of American cuisine to the people of the Costa del Sol for 20 years. Considering that the Coast can be a fairly brutal place for restaurants (will today’s hotspot become tomorrow’s cold leftovers?), Yanx’s continued success is nothing short of miraculous. Or is it? Above all, what this fun, familyfriendly place manages to achieve, seemingly without effort, is consistency. The menu offers traditional American food at a reasonable price and portion sizes are typically generous, meaning an army of repeat visitors. For those relaxed summer nights there is a generous terrace and, when the weather turns colder, the restaurant’s interior, with its impeccably American décor and playlist creates a comfortably appropriate ambience. The SOCIETY team is seriously addicted to Yanx, loving its extensive menu, authentic food and friendly staff, 75 per cent of whom have been part of the crew since the beginning. This spirit of continuity means that we are greeted like old friends on arrival, something that always starts the evening off on a positive note. It’s also a great place to be on a night when there is a big match, since two large screens allow diners to keep up

134

with the success – or failure – of their favourite teams. We like to take our time when we visit Yanx, but if you are hungry or in a hurry then don’t worry because the team of 10 chefs and in-house bakers will ensure that your food arrives promptly. In truth, Yanx offers a fabulous dining experience, but beware; this is a place where the old adage about one’s eyes being larger than one’s stomach apply. It is all too easy to be tempted by the gorgeous starters (and, believe us, this is Tex-Mex heaven) and then be unable to do justice to your main course, never mind be unable to take advantage of the sumptuous desserts. However, there is a sensible answer to this problem – why not follow our examples and share a starter or two? Mixing it up a little, we loved the fabulously tasty Nachos Nachos and the Famous Hot Wings served with a mouthwatering Blue Cheese Dip, not to mention the Onion Blossom with a Barbecue Salsa Dip. One of our party decided to move east for the main course, ordering the Singapore Crispy Beef Salad, which consisted of a gorgeously crunchy oriental salad, consisting of Noodles

and Bean Sprouts in a Chilli Vinaigrette, topped with Asian Sticky Beef. We can also recommend the Way Out West Burger, a tasty homemade Beef Patty accompanied by a smoky Barbecue Sauce and topped with Grated Cheddar and a crispy Onion Ring, all served in a freshly baked bun. The Tex-Mex dishes were too good to ignore and the Fabulous Fajitas more than lived up to their name and we adored the authentic Guacamole. If you can take the heat you must also experience the fiery wonders of Gaucho’s Chilli Pot, a large bowl of Yanx’s finest Beef Chilli, served with Rice, Salad, Cheese and Coleslaw and, be warned, this one is best tackled on an empty stomach. The dessert menu at Yanx really is a cornucopia of delights, so make sure that you enjoy a break before tackling it, or order a starter and dessert to ensure that you have room. That is certainly a trick that we will be trying on our next visit! In the meantime, if you have a sweet tooth (and who doesn’t?) we can confirm that the Apple and Cinnamon American Pancakes with Sour Cream were the best we have ever tasted. You would also expect an American-themed restaurant to come up with the

goods when it comes to a chocolate brownie and we were very happy with the Best Little Brownie in the West. Created using the finest Belgian Chocolate, served with luscious Vanilla Ice-Cream and topped with Chocolate and Caramel Hot Sauces, this was a chocoholic’s dream. Being cheesecake fans we also had to sample the American Baked Double Chocolate Cheesecake, which tasted as sinful as it looked, while the Frozen Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie served with Warm Caramel Sauce was superb. If you haven’t visited Yanx recently there are plenty of reasons to book a table in the next few weeks. A 20 per cent Halloween discount is being offered to diners who dress up in suitably creepy clothing and there will also be a Thanksgiving Celebration Dinner with live entertainment. Yanx’s New Year’s Eve celebration is already 90 per cent full, but a few places are still available. We are always looking at Yanx’s Facebook page, which is the best place to learn about all the latest news and offers before everyone else and, in the next couple of weeks, the details of this year’s winter promotions and February’s 20th Anniversary Party

will be announced, so if you haven’t ‘liked’ Yanx on Facebook now is the time to do so. This is also a wonderful place to go to enjoy a working breakfast or lunch with colleagues or to meet friends for coffee. An additional attraction is the increasingly popular Market Kitchen, which serves gorgeous (we know – we’ve eaten many of them!) Sausage Rolls and tasty Curries. Located in Nueva Andalucía’s constantly buzzing Centro Plaza, Yanx is the perfect place for anyone who wants to get away from it all while remaining where the action is. cafeyanx.com

NOTO

COSTA CUISINE

FOOD & PEOPLE

It’s a restaurant that is all about ‘food for people’ and its owners have created a space where they would love to go themselves.

I

t could be said that many important decisions are made in restaurants and for good reason. When you are seated at a cosy table with good food and great wine it’s far easier to relax and ponder life’s big questions, and having a favourite restaurant where you can really kick back is an essential part of this process.

Simple, honest, stylish and unpretentious with a delicious menu, a place where everyone could feel comfortable regardless of his or her situation or status. 136

That’s where NOTO comes in. It offers a rare combination of a relaxed ambience, delicious food and a contemporary interior with colours that suggest tranquillity and that’s why

our chat with Luciano. NOTO’s chef, and Eugenia, its manager, was a distinctly laid back affair, rather like the restaurant itself. Eugenia confesses that she is a city girl at heart and loves the fast rhythms of urban streets, which she returns to when she wants to recharge her batteries. But,

Photos by fenixproduction Tel 673 22 73 70 fenixproduction.com

when she reached her 30th birthday she decided that she needed to see the world and explore the development of the restaurant industry abroad. She started out in Qatar before spending some time in the French Riviera. Then she came to Marbella and NOTO, something that she is very happy about, because she loves Marbella’s tranquillity and its scenery, plus it provides her with ample opportunities to windsurf, exercise and learn Spanish and Italian. Luciano has a much longer relationship with Marbella. He first arrived here in 1989 when a friend opened a restaurant. He stayed a year before returning to his native Naples, but he always had a desire to return. And, so he did. In 1995, Luciano came back to Marbella and was appointed head chef at Regina’s in Nueva Andalucia.

COSTA CUISINE

How would you describe your relationship with Marbella? Luciano: My whole life is based around this city and the most important things in my life are my job and my children. They share my love for Marbella and are happy living here. Eugenia: For me, the restaurant is at the heart of my Marbella. And, I have to add that having the opportunity to live by the sea is sheer happiness. How was NOTO born? Eugenia: It started with a change of ownership in 2015. The new owner wanted to create something that was missing in Marbella restaurant culture: simple, honest, stylish and unpretentious with a delicious menu, a place where everyone could feel comfortable regardless of his or her situation or status. There is a saying; “fashion is transient, the classics are eternal,” and the classics of Italian cuisine are universally loved. So, we decided to stick to a simple, classic Italian menu. A steak or a pasta dish are perfect as they are and don’t require any further improvement. The only things we added to the menu are pizza, smoothies and some fabulous cocktails. Luciano: We have tried to keep all the best elements of the previous restaurant and the biggest part of our success is the fact that we have a well-organised team. The best of the original staff stayed on, so customers will also see familiar faces, and for myself, as a chef, I’m delighted with the kitchen, which has been fitted out with the latest equipment. I have no other wishes! (he laughs). Eugenia: I call our restaurant “the space.” It is a “space” for people and food. The interior looks stunning and the menu is perfect, but our guests create the mood and spirit of the place. If you think about how the world has developed over the last decade, with so much technology automating every part of our lives, we have so much more time available to be creative. So, I think that new places where we spend our time should encourage that creativity and be less bound by conventions and rules. That’s why I love NOTO. You can come here with your girlfriends for cocktails, or bring your laptop and work on a project whilst enjoying a light salad and glass of chilled rosé, or gather your family and come for dinner. It doesn’t matter why you come to NOTO, you will always be comfortable. For us, that’s a very important element of a contemporary restaurant.

if these elements are not impeccable, they can ruin even the finest cooking. So, we have paid a lot of attention to them at NOTO. Luciano: In the restaurant business everything is important – staff, management and service. Design is important as well, because it does attract customers. However, even the greatest interior is no substitute for a great kitchen, and everything that comes out of mine must be top notch. Eugenia: I’d like to say that for me personally, NOTO is the ideal format for a restaurant. It’s open and stylish and the design is not precious. It’s the type of restaurant that attracts customers who are open-minded, curious and in tune with our times. Luciano: I completely agree with Eugenia. NOTO definitely embodies my ideal vision of a restaurant. It is exactly how I imagined it: modern, beautiful and excellently equipped. The kitchen is a work of art. The chef represents not just the contents of the menu; he is the face of the restaurant as well. What attracted you to NOTO, Luciano? Luciano: The opportunity to create and my passion for cooking. I’m happy with the menu, but one should always be willing to make adjustments to allow for the tastes of our customers. Nowadays, it is important to be flexible and to pay attention to customers’ preferences. First and foremost, I thought about satisfying the tastes and preferences of customers from all over the world, so there are classic dishes as well as more modern ones. We have even created a children’s menu and our little customers love coming here. How was NOTO’s team created? Eugenia: We were lucky to receive a fantastic gift of the employees who

worked here under the previous owners. They are so wonderful and really hard workers! I’m very glad that I met my first Spanish friends here at NOTO. They are so kind, genuine and have a big heart. This year three new staff members joined us. For me the most important things in the team are openness, good mood, lightness and laughter! Everything else one can learn! Luciano: What is important with teamwork is sharing a common goal. In every job one should strive to be a little bit of a perfectionist. Also, the results shouldn’t depend on the number of customers. The food and the service must be of superb quality regardless of whether thirty or one hundred people arrived today. You mentioned that the team is multicultural. Was it easy for both of you to find a common language? Luciano: I love working with people from different countries. What is important is that they have a strong desire to work and a wish to achieve great results. One last question Eugenia and Luciano; what are your plans for the future? Luciano: For now, I would like NOTO to grow and develop. I know there a many things to do, but I don’t dream about anything else. I am happy here. Eugenia: NOTO Food & People -that’s what is important to us. Most importantly it is a restaurant we would go to ourselves and that’s how we judge it. Personally, I haven’t anywhere else like NOTO in Marbella, and I think it is what was missing. Thanks Eugenia and Luciano for sharing your passion for NOTO with us. And, it’s true; NOTO really is THE place to go when you want excellent food and stimulating people. Tel. 952 814 529 / 693 007 586 C/ Azahar Edificio La Ruleta, Nueva Andalucía. notorestaurant.com

What details are especially important to you? Eugenia: Lighting, air conditioning and music. They might seem unimportant, but

Wine Advice

This enchanting Italian combination of pasta and cheese calls for a bold red Brunello, with its nose that sings of the pine needles on the hills of Montalcino, along with an abundance of redcurrant and blackcurrant notes. Mild and juicy, the palate conjures up the fleshy, forest fruit and the cool, red-cherry finish. The homemade ravioli is delightful and engaging, and the cheese is an intriguingly delicious mix of aromatic pecorino and black truffle, which adds a delicate perfume to the grassy, nutty finish of this classic sheep´s milk cheese.

BR EXIT doesn’t mean

M

arbella’s Deputy Mayor Javier Porcuna explains why British residents shouldn’t panic over the vote to leave the EU and encourages all international residents to get more involved with the town they live in. Marbella’s dynamic Deputy Mayor, Javier Porcuna Romero invited SOCIETY MAGAZINE to discuss the issue of the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union. He is concerned that many British citizens living in Marbella are worried about what will happen to them when the UK leaves the EU and would like to reassure all of them that there is no need for panic. “I want all the British to feel secure in Marbella. They are a long-standing part of our international population and we certainly don’t want them to feel that they won’t be welcome in the future.” Of course, as he pointed out, nobody knows yet what that future might be. The UK is still a part of the EU until Article 50 is triggered and all the negotiations over the terms of leaving are completed. And, how long that will take, or what the conditions for residency and work in EU countries will be, so there is little point in imagining the likely outcomes, especially ones based on a pessimistic outlook. Sr. Porcuna would like British residents to know that Marbella’s Town Hall is there for them. If you have questions about residency, taxation, healthcare or any matter that you believe might be affected by Britain leaving the EU,

then the Town Hall will endeavour to answer your questions. For example, did you know that you can receive a tax break for owning an eco-friendly car? Similarly, enquiries from any British citizens who are eligible for Spanish citizenship are welcomed. You can apply for permanent residence after living in Spain for five years and for Spanish citizenship when you’ve been here for 10 years. However, until British citizens know where they stand in relation to living in Spain taking this step is not completely necessary and it may be preferable to take a wait and see approach.

Sr. Porcuna also told SOCIETY that he is keen to encourage more British residents in Marbella to register to vote. The more people there are on the voting register, the more money Marbella receives from central government to fund the essential elements of the infrastructure, such as roads, pavements, street lighting, schools, healthcare and other amenities that allow us all to enjoy a great dayto-day lifestyle in Marbella. Playing a role in the local community and being ‘Marbellís’ is something that the Town Hall seeks to promote to all of its international communities. The Town Hall is aware that there are many more residents in Marbella than the number registered to vote, simply because the numbers registered for IBI tax are greater than the number of voters, and this lack of registration prevents the city from receiving the full

amount of funds it would receive if we all registered. Sr. Porcuna said, “ We could afford more police and other services if we could show that our population is bigger than the voting register currently shows.” He informed us that in the last elections Marbella lost 5,000 voters because foreign nationals with residency on the voters’ register need to renew it every two years or they are dropped from the list. If you weren’t aware of facts like this, you can visit the tourist office on the promenade in Marbella to find out more about this. The Deputy Mayor also told us that he would be very happy if British and other foreign nationals became more involved with their communities in other ways and learnt more about the Spanish lifestyle, and the Spanish language. The Town Hall has a Cultural department that provides foreign residents with classes in Spanish and other aspects of the country’s culture. He told SOCIETY: “If you live here as if it is England with sun then you miss out on a lot of the opportunities, both in terms of business and lifestyle that are available to you in Marbella when you integrate more with the local community. “ In short, Marbella wants its international residents to take part in every aspect of life here. If you aren’t happy with the state of the pavements or the rubbish collection, rather than moan about it with friends, bring the complaints to the Town Hall, just as you would in your native country. Marbella gives its international residents so much and it could give us all even more if we embrace it as home. And, for the British who are worried about Brexit, Marbella’s Town Hall wants to help you in any way it can: Brexit certainly doesn’t mean Exit in Marbella.

“If you live here as if it is England with sun then you miss out on a lot of the opportunities, both in terms of business and lifestyle that are available to you in Marbella when you integrate more with the local community.” 158

GMF ROCKS LA SALA GIBRALTAR This year’s Gibraltar Music Festival at the Victoria Stadium was a huge success and what would any live music show be without a star-studded after party. This year La Sala Gibraltar hosted the V-VIP Afterparty with celebrity performers Ne-Yo, Heather Small and Paul Young among the famous names attending. The festival line up also included performers Travis, Europe, Bryan Ferry, All Saints, Jess Glynne and the ever-popular Stereophonics who delighted the audience. The hundreds of after party guests were able to carry on the festivities and enjoy La Sala’s live music acts as well as its amazing and justifiably famous cocktails. It was certainly a night that will go down as one to remember for La Sala Gibraltar, which only opened its doors on board the Sunborn Super Yacht Hotel in 2015. The VIP guests thoroughly enjoyed the views of the marina and mountains from the yacht’s decks and La Sala’s unique atmosphere. With its delicious menu and reputation for excellent entertainment, the organisers of GMF 2016 couldn’t have chosen a better venue to host the party that rocked the rock stars who lit up Gibraltar. lasalagibraltar.com

ARBORETUM FOUNDATION ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOPS The Arboretum is organising three amazing workshops on 15th October, which it hopes will inspire everyone who attends to engage more with, and understand more clearly, the importance of caring for our environment. Creating a more sustainable lifestyle and creating change are other themes. The workshops include an ARTivism Workshop, which explores the effectiveness of art for communicating social messages, the screening of the film “A Quest for Meaning”, which follows the journey of two friends who want to question how the world works, and an inspirational talk on Being an Agent of Change by Satish Kumar, one of the world’s leading environmental activist and pacifist. Satish Kumar has been tirelessly working on global change for over 50 years and it is an honour to have him speak at this event in Marbella. fundacionarboretum.org

SENIOR MASTERS – MCENROE, WILANDER AND OTHER TENNIS STARS AT THE PUENTE ROMANO The Senior Masters tournament, held annually at the Puente Romano Resort & Spa’s tennis courts proved yet again to be one of September’s most exciting events. The opportunity to see stars such as Yannick Noah, John McEnroe and Mats Wilander play was one that many Marbellí’s enthusiastically took up and the night of the semi-final was no exception. The evening commenced with an exciting match between Spanish player Alberto Costa and Morocco’s Younes El Aynaoui. El Aynaoui had previously beaten France’s Sebastian Grosjean that finally ended in a nail-biting tie-break with a score of 6-3, 6-7(9) and 10-5. Minutes after the end of this match, the crowd broke into a round of loud applause as Yannick Noah (winner of Roland Garros in 1983) and Mats Wilander (former world No. 1 and the winner of seven Grand Slams) took to the court. Yannick Noah is known for his sense of humour and he didn’t

disappoint this time either, although the Swede, Wilander, beat him 7-6, 6-2. The enthusiasm of the crowd and the cheerful atmosphere indicates that

the Senior Masters will continue to be a highlight event of Marbella’s sports calendar. If you missed it this year, there is always 2017.
