The lifeblood of any vegetation is the growing media that it resides in. For many years, we have researched the effect that engineered medias have on vegetation. Through these studies, we have either engineered or partnered with the most cutting edge engineered medias available. The idea that growth medias are a living, breathing organism working symbiotically with the plantings’ root structures was paramount in the development of all of our standard and custom blends. This technology has allowed us to reduce the establishment time for plantings by half. We offer these formulations in standard, custom lightweight, and ultra lightweight blends.

A key component to healthy growing media is the inclusion of sufficient pore space during the engineering phase. Ample pore space serves as an important foundation to give rise to new microbial life in the growing media due to increased airflow and oxygen availability and to allow for proper drainage retention characteristics. Hanging Gardens partners with a consulting agronomist in efforts to craft custom growing media blends specific to each project’s location, design intent, and functional necessities. Our team reviews each mix before delivery to ensure high performance standards.

With the ever-evolving nature of green infrastructure technology, new solutions to persistent problems continue to arise. In the search for high performance stormwater products, Hanging Gardens was also faced with the issue of water quality. Through exploration of new technologies, we found a solution that improves green infrastructure productivity by greatly increasing the quality of water re-entering local waterways.

GROWTH MEDIA & SOIL ADDITIVES SEQUESTRATION Osorb - Water Treatment
Product #
4710
Green Glass™ “Powered by Osorb®” is a family of specialized silica-based medias used to extract organic contaminants from water. It is produced in over 30 varieties to meet your site’s specific needs. Common varieties include: • Standard: General water treatment • BioMix: Bioswales • IronMax: Brownfield remediation through in situ injection The raw product is dry, granular, odorless, hydrophobic, and non-flammable with variable grain size depending on the application. It can be packaged in sealed poly open-head drums, “Super Sacks”, or other specialty packaging based on site needs. When contaminants in water and soils come into contact with Green Glass™ “Powered by Osorb®”, it captures them through hydraulic conductivity. The dirtier the site, the better it is able to perform. As the product absorbs, it swells, trapping pollutants indefinitely with zero incidence of leaching. Green Glass™ “Powered by Osorb®” was engineered with the support of the National Science Foundation. It offers an innovative and enduring solution for remediating contaminated brownfields, bioswales, stormwater runoff, creating pretreatment zones adjacent to stormwater sewers or waterways, and other specialty water treatment challenges.

Osorb - Brownfield Remediation
Product #
4720
The status quo for brownfield redevelopment has traditionally been the soil capping method. While effective, the problem of contaminated soil still remains below the surface of the cap. Future development or disturbance could breach the cap and return the site to a state of noncompliance with environmental regulations. Oxidizer treatments have also been utilized to essentially “burn out” contamination within soils, at the expense of sub-surface biology. Oxidizers may also fail to provide performance in treating contaminants that continue to leach into surrounding groundwater over time. In situ injection is the most common method of using Green Glass™ “Powered by IronMax-Osorb®”, directly targeting contaminant plumes through a carefully crafted remedial action plan. Green Glass™ provides an enduring solution, trapping contaminants indefinitely or actually breaking them down when “Powered by IronMax-Osorb®” is used. While oxidizers may provide a stopgap means to regulatory water testing, Green Glass™ remains in the soil to trap and/or reduce contaminants that eventually leach out. In addition, Green Glass™ “Powered by IronMax-Osorb®” continues to break down contaminants internally within its structure to prevent the production of potentially harmful secondary products. Rather than leaving environmental problems for future generations, Hanging Gardens utilizes Green Glass™ to improve site conditions today.

TECHNICAL DATA Use / Installation Method: • Green Glass™ “Powered by Standard or IronMax-Osorb®” is applied via in-situ injection or site-specific alternate methods. • Standard Osorb® is injected in staggered lines to create a “curtain” that prevents contaminants from migrating. • IronMax-Osorb® is injected into hot spots and surrounding areas to capture and reduce chlorinated contaminants.

Product #
4730
Green Glass™ “Powered by BioMix-Osorb®” enhances the effectiveness of bioswales, right-of-way bioswales (ROWB), bioretention ponds, filter strips, green roofs, and many other green infrastructure and LID systems by remediating common runoff contaminants from stormwater. Green Glass™ “Powered by BioMix-Osorb®” enhancements will protect soil biology from harmful contaminants, enhancing any standard bioswale’s ability to process nutrients, and increasing plant growth and swale robustness. Unenhanced bioretention systems are natural buffers that capture stormwater above ground using specialized soils and plants, preventing contaminated water from reaching sewers and local waterways. Green Glass™ enhanced stormwater solutions go a step further by using absorptive and reductive soils to capture and breakdown common stormwater contaminants. As a result, Green Glass™ stormwater solutions not only capture stormwater and reduce peak volume, but also remediate a significant amount of persistent contaminants and send a cleaner effluent back into the environment. Green Glass™ “Powered by BioMix-Osorb®” provides a new age solution for high performance green infrastructure, higher water quality standards, and a cleaner environment.
