Lord of the Flies Chapter Notes! ! ! ! Chapter 1! ! !
DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Like all other books, Lord of the Flies tells us about the setting, characters, and brief overview of what the story is going to be about. In this novel, we can find out that the story was set on an island without a touch from humans. The plane with a group of English boys was shot down and crashed on a deserted island. Here, we learn that the mood is adventurous etc.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
We get introduced few main characters : Ralph who is the main character of the story, Piggy, Simon, and Jack who is going to have to main conflicts with Ralph. The author described a little of the characteristics of characters listed above. The other boys who were in the group were just described as young boys as they did not take a huge role in the novel.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
Ralph and Jack had a little conflict when they were electing a leader for the group. Jack was kind of obsessed with being the leader. He wanted to become the leader of the group. However, the majority chose Ralph as a leader. Since he knew that Jack was sad, he offers Jack to explore the island with Simon. He also gave Jack permission to become a leader for the hunting group. Jack got all excited and went on with the exploration.!

ROLE THAT SETTING HAS ON ALL OF THE ABOVE IN EACH CHAPTER!
The story was set on the deserted island without any ‘adults’. Only the group of boys where there. They were not old enough to be separated from the adult’s care. However, some boys got excited by the fact that there were no adults nagging them.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Ralph and his groups started to get used to the situation and started thinking about what to do to survive. Ralph as a leader tried his best to give each person a significant role for their survival. He sets up some rules to keep the group organised. However, there were things that were bothering him. One boy stated that he saw a ‘beastie’, a monster in the jungle which scares most of the young boys. Piggy also complained that the group was so childish and stupid due to the fact that the little boys aren’t concerned with the fact that they were stuck on the island.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
In this chapter, the author gives the impression that Piggy is more like a grown-up in the group. He pointed some facts that were thoughtful and realistic. He acted as a ‘smart’ individual who pointed out that they might be stuck on this island for a long time and that they should care themselves and so on. He also had his glasses which did a significant role in the story.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
Ralph wasn’t pleased by the fact that the group was too young to actually lead. Ralph had some difficult time on organising the group and telling the boys to do work. However, it didn’t go well. The boys were about six, so he couldn’t give them the idea of what situation that they were in and how dangerous it is.!

ROLE THAT SETTING HAS ON ALL OF THE ABOVE IN EACH CHAPTER!
Ralph and his group decided to put a signal fire using Piggy’s glasses on the mouton that they explored in the previous chapter. The repressibility of keeping the fire going went to Jack’s hunting group as Jack volunteered. There weren’t that much of a detail about settings since the group was discussing about what to do and what is right. !

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Jack and his group went for a pig hunt for the first time. However, they weren’t able to catch a real pig that day. They were still hyped about hunting a pig. Jack was obsessed with the hunting and kept on thinking about how to kill a pig. On the other hand, Jack and Simon worked on making huts for the little boys to live in.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
Jack was described as an active and excited character in this chapter. He was so interested on the hunting that he didn’t care about any other problem that the Ralph’s group was having. While Jack became the active character, Ralph was described as a hard worker. Although the group weren’t helping and working, he kept the complaints himself and worked on building the huts.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
Ralph just had some complaints about little boys because they were not willing to help him or even do any work. He also stated that Jack was using the hunting as an excuse for avoiding the work. He kept on telling the group that him and Simon were the only one who where actually ‘working’ for their survival and gave us the thoughts that he was feeling unfair.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
The author starts off this chapter by telling us that the boys were not used to the island lifestyle and that it developed a daily rhythm. He explains the daily life of the boys on the island. The little boys where simply eating and playing as the elder ones were working. Jack was still thrilled about the hunting, forgetting the fact that he was also responsible for the signal fire. That day, he finally caught the pig. When they were gone hunting, Piggy and Ralph saw a ship sailing by. However, they found out that the signal fire was out. When Jack and his group came back with a pig, Piggy complained about how immature they were. Jack got intimidated and slapped him.!

In this chapter, we found out that Piggy is a kind of the character who complains a lot. We could also know that Jack is very hostile. He slapped Piggy as Piggy complained about him and his group. !

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
The small conflict between Ralph and Jack started to grow bigger. The mood of the group became slightly more intense. Jack did apologise to Ralph about his careless actions, but Ralph didn’t forgive him completely.!

ROLE THAT SETTING HAS ON ALL OF THE ABOVE IN EACH CHAPTER!
Since Jack was hunting in a jungle, he used clay to camouflage for an easier hunt. He put drawings on his face to look like he was part of the jungle. This lead to a success for the hunt in the end. Jack was really impressed and happy.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Ralph wasn’t successful at managing and organising the group. The boys weren’t not following the rules that he made, and Ralph was concerned about it. He called for a meeting and complained about the fact that no one followed the rules. However, his claim got ignored, and one little boy brought up the ‘beastie’. The boy stated that he saw the monster in the jungle. This made the little boys more scared.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
Jack, after the success of pig hunt, acted as a grown-up. He stated that he will protect the group from the monster when it appears. He was stilled hyped and started dancing with the group. Ralph, Piggy, and Simon were the only one left in the meeting place. At this point we could see that there were a huge barrier between Ralph and his group and Jack and Jack’s group.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
Ralph and Jack’s personal conflict continued to grow as they complained to each other. The group started to get separated to Ralph’s group and Jack’s group. It did not happen yet but the author foreshadows that something similar will happen later on.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
In this chapter, the group went for an expedition to find the monster. Ralph allowed Jack to lead the group. They soon reached the areas that they have never been before, but they couldn’t find any signs of monster. As the time pass by, some of the boys became lose and started playing. Ralph on the other hand got mad about it and reminded the boys that they have a responsibility to fin the monster.!

There weren’t any big development of the characters in this chapter. Though we get introduced two characters, Sam and Eric. They weren’t really part of the story that much but we can see that they were part of the young boys who get scared by the monster.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
Ralph’s impression toward the group had became worse and worse as the boys weren’t listening to him to follow the rules and such. He did get annoyed by this fact. The group now was not pleased by the commands and orders from Ralph.!

ROLE THAT SETTING HAS ON ALL OF THE ABOVE IN EACH CHAPTER!
In this chapter, the author gives more details about the island : rocky hills with thin walkway leading up to it and small caves on the hills. However, the setting didn’t play that much of a role. It was just a basic descriptions.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Jack suggested that he was going to be hunting for the pig while he look for the monster. He found pig droppings which lead him to a boar. Although he failed to hunt the boar, he was excited and thrilled. Then a boy named Robert acted as a boar. Other boys started this as a game, but they ended up beating Robert up.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
From the part where boys lost their minds and beat Robert up, we can see that the boys weren’t in a perfect condition, both physically and mentally. Also, we can see that Robert is trying hard to maintain his place in the group.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
When the night falls, Ralph stated that it will be hard to keep the hunt going since it was dark and dangerous. Jack challenged Ralph to join the hunt with him. Ralph didn’t want to look like a weak boy, so he accepted the challenge.!

ROLE THAT SETTING HAS ON ALL OF THE ABOVE IN EACH CHAPTER!
The ‘rocky’ hills were obstacles for the boys to go through. The night falls and the hills became more dangerous for the boys to continue there hunt.!

Chapter 8!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Jack said that Ralph was a coward who ran away from the monster and that he should not be a leader anymore. Some of the boys disagreed with Jack which made Jack frustrated. He then decided to leave the group and live himself. He also said while leaving that anyone who likes is welcome to join him. The group finally got separated to Ralph’s and Jack’s group.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
Once again, Piggy acted as a grown up in Ralph’s group. When Ralph was depressed and didn’t know what to do after the incident, Piggy gave out an idea to improve the fire and stuff. This up Ralph’s mood and helped him a lot. !

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
The conflicts that was there from the beginning finally blew. The group got separated. Ralph and Jack became enemy(?) after this incident. However, Jack was holding the upper hand since he had pig meat which tempted some of the boys to leave Ralph’s group and join Jack’s Group. Ralph was troubled by this.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Ralph and Piggy decided to go to Jack’s camp where Jack had a feast with roasted pig. Jack invited all of the boys from Ralph’s group to join him. In fact, most of them accepted to join Jack. Meanwhile, Simon found out that the monster was actually a dead man with parachute. When he went to the feast to tell everyone the truth, Jack’s tribe misunderstood him with the monster. They started beating him up. At the end, they killed him.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
We now know that Jack and his group or tribe is very hostile, violent and wild. They straight up beat Simon up and killed him without trying to communicate.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
There wasn’t any conflict in this chapter except for the fact that Jack’s tribe killed Simon. That was the biggest incident that happened in this chapter.!
! ! ! Chapter 10! ! !
DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Ralph and Piggy fell in to bigger trouble after Simon got killed during the feast. They were depressed and felt ashamed of their behaviour. In Jack’s camp, Jack started punishing other boys saying that the monster might have disguised to a normal person. He also said that they should
continue to guard against the monster. Then he ordered his group to raid Ralph’s camp at night. Ralph and Piggy got beaten up by the Jack’s tribe, and their stuff got stolen.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
I got the idea of the Jack the sadist from what I have seen in this chapter. Like I described earlier, Jack was a hostile kind of person. In this chapter, he punishes other boys for no particular reason. I was thinking if he was enjoying it or not. Anyways, the fact was that we now know that Jack is also a violent person.!

CONFLICTS THAT DRIVE THE CHAPTER!
Ralph’s and Piggy’s impression toward Jack was just becoming worse. Jack raided them to steal the power to create the fire making Ralph and Piggy to have no choice other than confronting him.!
! Chapter 11! ! !
DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
Without Piggy’s glasses, Ralph’s group was unable to create a fire. Ralph decided to go to Jack’s camp to talk this through. He was hoping that Jack still remember his authority. When he got to Jack’s camp, the guards didn’t allow them to go in. Then Jack attacked Ralph and began the fight. When Ralph and Jack was fighting for the second time, Roger threw a huge rock down the hill. Ralph managed to dodge it, but it hit Piggy which brought him to death.!

DEVELOPMENT OF CHARACTERS!
At this point, Ralph now fears Jack. Jack showed his power to Ralph and that Ralph should be obeying him. Ralph, however refuses and escapes from him. Jack sends his group to find Ralph and possibly kill(?) him.!

DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEME!
When Ralph was running away from Jack, a man appears in front of Ralph. Ralph saw a naval officer standing over him. He stated that he saw the fire and thought that there might be people stuck on the island. Ralph explained what happened on the island to the officer. Then the story ends.
