CREATIVITY

FROM GRAPHIC COLOUR TO THREE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE Time: 2011.11 Instructor: Erik Chen Requirement: Take a piece of octavo paper and define 3cmx3cm grids on the obverse of the paper(a crossing diagonal line is acceptable). Then, color the obverse of the paper according to the grids you drew, while on the back of the paper, you can design with any two colours freely. Aside from separating, the paper can be cut, stretched, folded, rotated, overlapped, glued, etc. according to the lines. Finally, reassemble the paper and make it a three-dimensional structure.

Quanzhou is my hometown, which is located in the southeast of Mainland China. And it was the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road in ancient China. What’s more, the port of Quanzhou was the world’s largest port ever, which held its head up with the Alexandria in Egypt. The people of Quanzhou make a living with the sea since ancient times, and have strong and fearless character like sea.

[A PIECE OF PAPER]

When I started to study in Kinmen, I could not help missing my hometown. So taking “HOMETOWN” as the concept of my project was incidentally suitable to the occasion. Talking about my hometown, I think of sea, ancient lanes and erythrina flower are the most representative elements. Accordingly, I try to shape the image of sailboat to aassociate with sea. On the top half of the works, one can see the folded part of the paper, which is to express the image of sailboat sailing on the sea. And on the other half, I attempt to make the paper concave-convex to produce the illusion of sailboat sailing onward. When it comes to colour, I believe that blue of the sea, brown of the ancient lanes and red of the erythrina flower can perfectly express the concept of “HOMETOWN”. The ancient lane in my hometown

03

[TWO PIECES OF PAPERS]

The final works is made of two pieces of octavo papers. The volume is not divided into upper and lower parts to shape the sailboat like the previous work and I try to make them cross and fold to create a spacial perception. In addition, the board not only supports the works, but also be regarded as one part of the volume.

In terms of colour, the image of sea and ancient lanes are showed on the front of the papers. And also the concave parts of the volume are filled with the brown of ancient lanes. I attempt to make the sense of dynamic by expressing the imagery of the flying petals of erythrina flowers on the other side of the papers. 04

LIFE SCALE

SEAT DEVICE DESIGN (teamwork)

Time: 2012.4 Theme: The Love of Wind Lion God Cake Material: wood and waterpipes Instructor: Hsin-Yin Huang

Every year in April 12th lunar calendar, the ceremony of the city god is held in Kinmen, which has a long history with 334 years. A lot of religious activities are held by believers with devout hearts on that day every year. The class was divided into four studios, and about ten students a studio. We should design and make one or more real scale seat devices with real materials together. Meanwhile, we are expected to write a play script and have a performance on the ceremony with the seat devices that we make (of course we can design and produce relevant props or cloths if needed). 06

|COUPLE CHAIR|

It was the first time that my teammates & I worked together to made a real scale works with our hands. The process for making the devices is full of various difficulties and obstacles, even the disagreements between teammates. But, the process and the result were fulfilling.

CAMPUS BUILDING

THE BUILDING FOR ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT Location: National Quemoy University, Kinmen, Taiwan Time: 2013.10 Site Area: 2886 ㎡ Gross Floor Area: 1550 ㎡ Total Floor Gross Area : 4909 ㎡ Instructor: Zhi Hong Chen

The site is located in the south side of National Quemoy University, near the school gate and close to Student Activity Centre. At the opposite, you can see the sports courts and ecological pond. When you enter our school from the west gate, you will see the site on your left hand. And in the future, if the building on this site was built, it would be the first building you can see after entering our school.

|INDEPENDENCE AND INTERACTIVITY| In order to create the independence of every major space, I try to define the property of spaces according to the characteristics of users. On this basis, I try to make the intersection, meet and final gather together of vision happened in the building, so that the correlation among every major space would be built. The space would be created between the two volumes in order that it can be an independent gathering space that belongs to the architecture department and blocks the noise from Student Activity Centre. In addition, students also can walk from school gate to other campus buildings through the negative space.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING

HOTEL DESIGN The thought “gathering” comes from the spatial form of the earth buildings and the lifestyle of the local people. I attempted to create a hotel which has the SHARED-SPACE between tourists and local people.

Taiwanese street-house type

|STREET-HOUSE| The blocks around the site shape with rows of high and narrow street houses, which is common in Taiwan. But in Kinmen, it’s one and only. 1 The place where the site sits is one of the blocks in the area. Accordingly, I hope the project would be the continuation of the blocks, but not so regular as other blocks. 2 The thought comes from the form of Taiwanese street house. I think the positive and negative space of street house give people who are on the street and in the street house respectively different feelings. And I attempt to take the different feelings into the project, in order to break the boundaries of administrative space and civic space, and create a new administrative and civic centre. 3 The transverse square space would come into being when the volume of new library was set the old one and the administrative building was behind them. In terms of the volumes, you can see the longitudinal platform appeared between the library buildings and administrative buildings, which connect them in respect of visual and function. 23

DESIGN&PLANNING

The Activation and Regeneration of Hakka Settlement in Low-Carbon Ecological City (teamwork) Location: Gaoqiao Hakka Settlement, Longgang District, Shenzhen City Time: 2014.3 Instructor: Yi-Jen Tzeng There was Cross-Straits Open Research Design Workshop held during 25th February to 5th March in Shenzhen City. Harbin Institute of Technology(China), Tunghai University(Taiwan) and National Quemoy University(Taiwan) took part in the workshop. About 30 students totally, and broke into three groups. Every group should do a planning and design project about Hakka Settlement together.

The site Gaoqiao Settlement is located in Longgang District, Shenzhen City, which is closed to Dongguan City and Huizhou City. Gaoqiao settlement belongs to Shenzhen International Low Carbon City with convenient transportation condition. The area about 1 square kilometer in Longgang District is planned for demonstration area of Low Carbon City, where the Gaoqiao settlement sits. Gaoqiao Settlement is a traditional Hakka round house, near the Technology Park of Low-Carbon City. Most of the houses in Gaoqiao Settlement were badly smashed, and also some new buildings replaced the original houses. The original residents almost moved out of the houses, and rent their houses for migrant workers. 28

SOUTH

There are four entrances to the site. And two of them, which are on the both sides of the Half -Moon Pond, are the main entrances. Some unplanned roads around the site played the road of daily life, but they must be improved to relate to surrounding transportation.

1:1 Building Status

Traditional Houses New Buildings Traditional Streets Preserved Houses

the height of building is equal to the width of street. The vision is not easy to be limited so that people can have a wide view when they are on the street. The cohesion of space is stronger and the scale of space is suitable for activities.

[LANDSCAPE RENOVATION]

A-A' SECTION

In order to create a good environment, make the slope mild instead of the steep slope beside the site, which can enhance the growth of plants and promote water conservation. In addition, grassy furrows and water collecting pipes can be set on the slope to collect excessive rainfall, which can flow into Half-Moon Pond and achieve the rainwater efficient use.

B-B' SECTION

Adjust the steep slope in order to enhance the connection between Gaoqiao Settlement and Convention & Exhibition Centre of Shenzhen International Low-Carbon City, which makes people have activities beside Half-Moon Pond with a fabulous view.
