CONCEPT
Helwan is a resonating city that is superimposed of multiple historical heritage, therapeutic, scientific and industrial layers. The project re-brands Helwan as a scientific city by capitalizing on the scientific value of the Helwan observatory. It also aims to make science part of the everyday life by reducing the gap between the society and science as Egypt lacks the scientific innovation according to GCI Index 2018. The project capitalizes on the scientific curiosity that shifted the fascination of the humanity from Astronomy to Space Sciences. It also supports the Egyptian Government’s Space Map (2015) to make use of space economy in everyday life.

DESIGN APPROACH
The architectural concept is based on re-integrating the society with space science technological advances through sci-fi architecture to stimulate curiosity by using fragmentation and desert architecture. The desert architecture utilized the topographic nature of the site by creating a physical connection between the old and new observatory buildings and use the contour for viewing ports. The sci-fi architecture is a tool of science fiction through creating defying laws of physics inclined platforms, sharp forms and mega structures. The concept of fragmentation is derived from the drivers of complexity by Venturi to stimulate curiosity. The similarities between the architecture of sci-fi and Helwan is explained in fig. 2
SITE ANALYSIS & USER GROUP
The site is located between the National Reseach Institure of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) and old observatory buildings. The site has a topographical difference of more than 6 six meters. The site layout connects between the old and new observatory buildings by creating a North West prevailing wind plaza. The inclined connectors cut through the plan by & creates flying viewing platforms that are perpendicular to the desert contours. The typology has three main functions the research center, the museum and the enterprise. The three functions feed into the communal stripe creating an out-bound society. Thus, the target users are the scientists, students, adults and entrepreneurs.
EXPERIENTIAL & FUNCTIONAL APPROACH Sci-fi architecture initial conceptual model (fig. 3)
The curiosity is unraveled through the labyrinth plaza with multiple angles to stimulate curiosity. The pleasant surprises mark the entrances, hop on hop & off platforms & communal nodes using steel structure. The blue metal panels marks the high intensity places of curiosity represented in the inclined connectors. The curious spaces in the research are mainly curious collaborative and circulation cores. The intensity of the experience throughout the museum is marked by shade and shadow and lighting poles for thrill seeking. The collaborative spaces encourages connectivity and thrill seeking through overlooking platforms.

The first section explores the main connector that ties between the research spaces and feeding knowledge to the lively workshop areas. The second section emphasized on the horizontal connectors between the three main spaces: the Museum, the Research Center and the Enterprise Centre creating a vertical labyrinth.

The Concept
The zoning and mass concept is concerned with building to empower user social and communal behaviors. The stereotyping of Hospital Typologies enforce a certain formal user behavior around hospitals. The mass utilizes penetration as a break through into the typology that transmits a commercial experience instead of the hospital. Typical formal, straightforward behavior. The hospital design prioritizes users by designing “Communal Pockets” as an integration between the street and the building as a living organism that co-exists with El-Korba as a rich context.
“Dispersing Users’ Fear of Typology And Empowering Way-Finding ”
The zoning and mass concept is concerned with building to empower user against fear of Hospitals. The hospital is designed to allow all functions be visible from the hospital atrium as an approach to way finding. The entrances are profound and accentuated in the models.

Re-imagining Nazlet Elsemman, Cairo The concept behind the re-imaging is based on Henri Le Fevbre’s Production of Space concept to anlyze Nazlet ElSemman as experienced by its citizens, perceived by outsiders and conceived by architects and the government. The master plan grid is derived from the touristic journey of the tourists to create a heritage connector gate.
