RESEARCH.
Upon being assigned this project, I was immediately intrigued. Calendars tend to have a very standard, traditional structure. It would be interesting to manipulate this traditional structure to create a new design, hopefully one that would be compelling enough to give the Sam Fox Fall 2018 events the attention they deserve. The first step I took in this project was researching effectively designed calendars. I searched for different ways to organize the events, different hierarchical solutions, and different type treatments. Through this research, I found that the date, title of event, and time/location were generally regarded as the most important pieces of information, and the rest of the event’s description was treated as regular body text. One thing I noted early on from the examples I had researched was that for the most part, the calendars were either type-driven, design-driven, or a balanced combination of both. Too much in both directions would be too distracting. After conducting this research, I was overwhelmed with the amount of possibilities that existed for organizing this information. Between orientation, color, typeface, and scale, there were so many routes I could take. Additionally, there were no limits to the poster’s size, only adding to the mix of alternatives. The only way to see which possibilities would work would be to test them out in the next phase of the project.

DISCOVERY
The first step in my discovery process was thumbnailing potential ways to organize the content I was given. These thumbnails is were I resolved decisions regarding hierarchy. As demonstrated by my sketches, my first thought was that “Fall 2018” was the most important information, and the rest would be secondary to the design. After more consideration, I realized that though this information was important, the “Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts” was probably more important in terms of understanding the content of the poster. Going forward, I keep this hierarchical decision in mind. Upon determining this general hierarchical framework, I then worked to establish a hierarchical system for each event on the calendar. I would use capitalization, font-weight, and scale to establish the importance of certain elements, like title, date, and time. For these events, standardization was key. Once I had come up with an effective system, I kept the treatment consistent across all of the events on the calendar. For my initial typeface trials, I scrolled through the typekit fonts choosing typefaces with a ton of personality, like Capitol and Blenny. Although these typefaces are complex and decorative, they commanded almost too much attention. As the project progressed, I realized the importance of clarity and that in some cases, simplicity works best. After experimenting with several typeface combinations, I arrived at Balboa and Scala Sans. These are two sans-serif fonts that vary in weight and width; though they are relatively simple, they compliment each other well. During this phase, I also began to experiment with color. My initial trials made me realize how important color contrast was for legibility. Although two colors could be different hues, they could still clash if they are too close in value, which is what I found with the maroon and teal in my first color trial.

REFINEMENT.
From the discovery phase of this project, I realized that although complex and decorative fonts and designs may seem compelling, they can also be incredibly distracting. Ultimately, legibility is most important, and if these elements take away from that, they are compromising the entire design. Because of this, I decided to scrap the typefaces with embellishments and commanding personalities and take the simple route. Keeping the body text simple left more room for complex designs in other spaces of the poster. Once I had established a working system for organizing the events and their respective descriptions on the calendar, I needed to work towards creating a compelling design that would tie the front side of the poster to its back. I experimented with orienting different components in different directions and fitting them all together like a puzzle. This design definitely had potential, but at first it came across as too distracting and a bit difficult to read. The “Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts” was pretty hard to read in the vertical orientation that I originally had it in, and splitting up the “FA” and “LL” in “fall” definitely hindered legibility. To make the design less visually distracting, I shifted the orientation of most of the text blocks and rearranged their positions. Additionally, I limited the text on the poster to three point sizes instead of nearly eight I had on my previous version. The result of these alterations was a ton of empty space, which I would have to work to resolve. Throughout the refinement process, I realized that fine details can make or break a design. Elements like spacing, point size, color matching, and alignment were crucial to finalizing my design. For example, the space from the text to the border of the block, between calendar events, from title to body text, etc. were all completely different. These discrepancies, though very minor, were really throwing the design off. Although standardizing and adjusting these elements may be tedious, keeping them consistent really helped to tie the design together.

After establishing the general framework for my design, it was time to add color. I first experimented with adding blocks of color around the groups of text. Although this moved the design in the right direction, there was still a ton of unresolved white space. From here, I extended each block to the end of the page to fill the space.

I experimented with a bunch of ways to engage the empty background space of my poster. I tried out various patterns and filler colors, but arrived at the solution of three-dimensionalizing the text boxes to occupy the background space.

To maximize contrast, I arrived at this final color palette:
Next, I focused on perfecting the small details on the calendar side of the poster. I first transformed all of the images I included from CMYK to Duotone so that the images match the colors in their respective boxes, as they were calling too much attention in full color. I then rearranged the boxes to fit the ‘Sam Fox’ title at the top, and I made the spaces and edge relationships equal everywhere.

CRITICISM.
During the class critique, we addressed the elements that draw visual attention, like color, texture, and scale, how to establish clarity, and how to create a flexible system. We discussed how in some cases, the choice of typeface made the poster with its unique personality, and that in other posters with simpler typefaces, the design was more influential guiding the poster. Establishing a balance between type and image is also an acceptable alternative, however too much of both elements makes the design too complex and distracting. A new element we had to consider in the project was the implementation of the WashU logo. During the class critique, we talked about how instinctually a bunch of us just threw the logo in the corner so that it commanded as little attention as possible. However, throwing a logo into a corner and making it super small actually differentiates it from the rest of the elements on the posters, giving it the adverse effect of actually commanding more attention to it. In my own poster, I did place the WashU logo in the bottom corner, however after seeing the solutions of my peers, I realized my logo is way too large. I will definitely shrink it down for the final version. Also important to consider with regard to the logo is which version of the logo to include. Since the WashU logo features red and green, this choice is especially important. If the poster features a diverse color palette, the red and green in the logo could appear a bit distracting and potentially clash with the existing color scheme. In this case, using an all black or all white logo may be the most effective solution. Something I have to keep in mind going forward is that the colors I see on my computer screen may not translate perfectly on the printed copy. To solve this discrepancy, I will have to print more test samples of color/text to make sure that the print version comes out the way I envisioned it on the screen. Although on the screen the color palette I used appeared bright and vibrant, this brightness was incredibly amplified on the printed copy, to the extent where it was distracting. This definitely compromised the design of my final calendar, and I will be sure to adjust my colors for the final review.
