ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
J
ahana Hayes, a high school history teacher, was named 2016 National Teacher of the Year on April 28 by the Council of Chief State School Officers. She was recognized by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony and will travel the nation and the world over the next year to represent 3.5 million teachers and advocate on their behalf. Hayes has taught at Waterbury’s John F. Kennedy High School for 11 of her 13 years as an educator, having begun her career in the New Haven public schools. Her students describe her enthusiasm for her work as infectious. Over the last decade, she has taught Roots of American Citizenship, world history, U.S. history, civics & geography, and African-American history. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University, a master’s from the University of St. Joseph, and a certificate of advanced study from the University of Bridgeport. Hayes is very active as a missionary at Christ C.M.E. Church and encourages her students to make a positive impact in their communities. Many have joined her in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society, Citywide Front Porch clean-ups, Earth Day cleanups, volunteering at local soup kitchens, and many other events. She has also served as lead teacher for Waterbury’s after-school program and has wo r k e d t o s t r a t e g i z e m i n o r i t y t e a c h e r r e c r u i t m e n t . M s . H a y e s h e l p e d to secure a $75,000 minority teacher recruitment and retention grant for her district offered by the state Department of Education. She is passionate about mentoring new educators and has worked to initiate district-wide programs. She tells her students excellence happens in their school every day. Hayes believes her award will not only inspire students to pursue careers in education but will demonstrate the impact one individual can have. “Our students need to know that they have value and can make a difference in this world. This honor makes that real for them,” she said. Ms. Hayes has received many awards and accolades for her accomplishments in teaching including an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Q u i n n i p i a c U n i v e r s i t y.

ACADEMIC HERALDRY
T
he pageantry of today’s academic procession harks back to the Middle Ages. From the monk’s habit has evolved the long black gown, and from the cowl, which monks wore as a shoulder covering, comes the hood. The square “Oxford cap” with stiff crown, known as a mortarboard, was developed from the skull caps worn by churchmen officiating at services. In 1895, a uniform code of academic costumes was adopted by most colleges and universities in the United States. The code decrees the style of gowns and hoods. A bachelor’s gown is black, has long pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The master’s gown, also black, is usually worn open; it has longer, narrow sleeves which extend below the knee. The doctor’s gown is usually black but may be of a color representing the institution granting the degree; the bell-shaped sleeves have three velvet bars, and velvet panels five inches wide that extend down the front edges of the bottom. The bachelor’s and master’s mortarboard tassels are black; and the doctor’s are gold. The bars and colors of the hood represent the academic field in which the degree was awarded, and the lining of the hood is usually the colors of the institution conferring the degree. Among the hood colors to be seen today and the fields of study they represent are these: Arts, Letters, Humanities—White; Business—Drab; Music—Pink; Physical Education—Sage Green; Science—Golden Yellow; Social Science—Citron; Theology/ Divinity—Scarlet; and Criminal Justice—Purple.

T H E A L M A M AT E R “FAIR LANE” I Fair Lane, we love thee, love thee well. It is of thee we love to tell, Of friendly years of college life, Of college years with pleasure rife; Of years we look upon with joy, Of years we could but help employ Our minds in ecstasy when soon We would begin this happy tune.
II Long may our loved college live For we our zealous help will give, And give it too with might and main To that dear school we love , our Lane. When out upon life’s rugged sea, We then will turn and think of thee, We’ll think of days we spent with you, Of days we cheered with the Red and Blue.
III When troubles rise to dim our way, We’ll know no other words to say. And say them over and over again, We love thee dearest, fairest Lane. And may our loved college live, For we our zealous help will give, And give it too with might and main To that dear school we love, our Lane.
— Words by Athal M. Smith
