ADM 4310 Final Under Armour Presentation

The Start of Under Armour Under Armour was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a fullback for the University of Maryland football team. He would change his practice shirts constantly because they would be drenched in sweat and noticed that his shorts he would wear for practices did not have the same issue. He was tired of always having to switch out his shirts that he wore under his jerseys. So, he created his first prototype of the t-shirt with the synthetic material that wicks away sweat and moisture like the shorts. He let his teammates try them out and give feedback, then from there he created more versions and now uses microfibers. Under Armour was the start of moisture wicking synthetic fibers in apparel and then all the other high competing brands joined in, such as Adidas, Nike, and Reebok. Under Armour designs and manufactures college uniforms and they have designed thousands of uniforms for teams and their specially themed games.
Purpose The main goal is to have athletic clothing that remains light, cool and can keep the person wearing it dry is very important for comfort.

Football Uniform Information Looking at some of the football products on Under Armour’s website, the website gives specific information, via tabs, for each piece of the uniform. The tabs are “DNA”, “Specs and Fit”, and “Care”. It is here we can learn the goal of each item that composes the uniform. There is an item of an undergarment that is a type of compression short known as the UA Football 6-pocket Girdle. It’s goals according to its DNA is to be able to hold the football pads, compress tightly, and still be comfortable with the 4-way stretch, wick away and dry sweat fast while simultaneously preventing the growth of odor bacteria. The fiber content used in the products are mostly polyester, elastane and some cotton. The majority of the undergarments worn under the uniform, also have the 4-way stretch fabric to enable the uniform to fit close to the body, provide ample mobility, and breathability for the player.
Athletic Trend
Textiles Under Armour uses a microfiber fabric that has 4 way stretch so it can be as closely fit to the body and still be comfortable to move around in. Moisture wicking fabrics that use synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and spandex are most commonly used for athletic wear. Breathability in fabrics is really important as well especially for football using meshes in areas where there are not pads and the fabric is touches the body.
Activewear Spandex Stretch 90% Polyester 10% Spandex
Athletic Mesh Knit 100% Polyester

Conclusion
Through the years of watching college and NFL football it has always been cool to see what the uniforms of each team looks like. Especially the games that have a set theme. I really have enjoyed working on this project because it has brought my two worlds of sports and design together. Also, it is cool to know that this field is so much more versatile than we are initially lead to believe.
