BRIDGING DISCONNECTS YEAR l fourth: fall 2019 to winter 2020 TEAM l 2: with Derek Chylinski TOOLS l illustrator, photoshop, rhino LOCATION l downtown sudbury, on this design was created for the via rail train station site within downtown sudbury. beginning with a site analysis, the project goal was determined to provide a connection between two disconnected communities through the act of bridging both programmatically and physically. creating a connection between two sites separated by the via rail train tracks as well as a connection between the local makers of sudbury with galleries and cultural spaces. the design of a bridge across these tracks created a physical act of bridging, while the design of three distinct communities as well as open spaces between them created a programmatic act of bridging. featured on the site are studio live - work units and a workshop, the grey street plaza (where the bridge meets the site), the market building, the train station plaza (featuring the existing train station) and a cluster of communal live work units.

DORAN’S DISCOVERY GALLERY YEAR l third: winter 2019 TEAM l individual TOOLS l illustrator, photoshop, rhino, model making LOCATION l sudbury, on this project focused on adapting an old brewery building within sudbury. as a design approach a thesis was developed, which fixated on the idea of hidden discoveries. this came from the observation of the brewery being located in a heavily populated residential area with a lack of cultural and experiential opportunities. with this design the goal was to create a “third space” that families in the area could enjoy. circulation and moments of discovery were used to create communal spaces and encourage green development. by using circulation, courtyards became a part of the main journey through the galleries, but the also allowed for “hidden discoveries” into the rest of the gallery. additionally the use of perforated screens on the exterior and in the interior created these “moments of discovery.”

THE VILLAGE DAYCARE YEAR l third: fall 2018 TEAM l individual TOOLS l illustrator, photoshop, rhino LOCATION l copper cliff, on this project began with the creation of a thesis, which focused on the idea of creating a village, centralizing the african proverb; “it takes a village to raise a child.” by unfolding a small community within the daycare, the community of copper cliff would be raising the children, all while the presence of children would be giving back to the community. to demonstrate this, the idea of interior streets was formed with “homes” (each of the rooms) branching off of the street. a community event space was made which allowed for a shared building for both the children and the community to interact with each other.

THE SO CALLED “PUBLIC SPACE” YEAR l fourth : winter 2020 TEAM l 4 TOOLS l illustrator, rhino, design build LOCATION l nuit blanche 2020, sudbury, on
this installation was the product of an independent study. the design came from the idea of women inhabiting public space. this installation specifically simulates a woman’s walk home alone at night. the individual entering the space begins by traveling down a corridor featuring panels with wandering eyes. they then enter a room where a video plays and verbalizes the psychological processes a woman goes through before entering public space. the next part of the journey leads them down a dark, semi-lit hall signifying the street at night, with large figures on the exteriors creating a shadow to signify someone watching them. finally, the user ends their journey by grabbing a comic (displayed on the left), which summarizes the whole journey, followed by experiencing an exaggerated solution portraying the ideal reaction of instilling empathy for women who are alone in public space at night.

As the night comes to an end, they go their separate ways.
it’s so dark!
i’ve lived a good life, i am prepared to die.
COMIC completed for the installation. The comic was used as a visual to summarize the story behind the installation in a visual way.

PLASTOPIA YEAR l fourth : fall 2019 TEAM l 9 TOOLS l hand design, rhino, design build LOCATION l downtown sudbury, on this installation was completed as a collaborative project within design studio. it looked at the theme of “eat your greens” and the individual’s relationship with single use plastic. the installation features three pods coated with a design from old advertisements, which speak to how great plastic was at the time. as the user gets closer and enters the pods they see a large ornament made of three different single use plastics located in the oculus of the pod. each pod’s interior is coated with reflective material, which makes the user feel as though they are surrounded by plastic. this installation makes one aware of their use of plastic and where the reality of a plastic future could be leading us.

DESIGN. BUILD. PLAY YEAR l third : fall 2018 TEAM l 14 TOOLS l hand design, rhino, design build LOCATION l copper cliff, on this installation was completed as a collaborative project within design studio. the structure explored an abstracted form of croquet through the idea of moving a ball through a series of wickets. the use of colourful fabrics, wood and weeping tile created a structure that played with both light and sound. the installation was later purchased by the city of sudbury’s child services.

B.N.D.R YEAR l first : fall 2016 - winter 2017 TEAM l 13 TOOLS l hand design, model making, design build LOCATION l ramsey lake, sudbury, on this installation was completed as a collaborative project done in studio. this structure explores the idea of movement, rest, and provided a sense of shelter. the design was inspired by the idea of skate patterns found on ice and mimicked this through its curved form as well as the use of bent wood, which was achieved through lamination and steaming. the structure allowed for interaction to occur by providing seating and encouraging movement both through and around the structure.
