Surrealism started as a literary and political movement but had a profound effect on art, photography and film. Influenced by the work of Freud it aimed to uncover the subconscious using dreamlike imagery that challenged perceptions of reality. It was started in Paris by the poet and critic AndrĂŠ breton who published the first surrealist manifesto and launched the journal la revolution surrealist in 1942 .influenced by Sigmund Freuds work on psychology and dreams and by the political writings of karl marx. Although there was no single style of surrealist art there are two dominant strands dreamlike paintings and those using free association. The latter was achieved by such means as starting at a pattern until a hallucination occurred.
In the 1940s the cold war was happening so people needed a distraction and this was art. Some people turned to art to help them get though the war as it was away of taking their mind off things, especially Surrealism because when people look at Surrealism they go into a dream world. However some Surreal art is very dark but it was still a get away from the tragic things that were happening outdoors. Another thing artists tried to do was to mock the war and what was happening to make people laugh and not see all the negative. They made their art humorous to give people some hope. In the 1940s there were lots of different things that influenced each other. For example in the war people started to lose lots of resources and materials to make garments therefore the fashion changed and colours changed as the more colourful the garments were the more expensive they were therefore they would use rags and if there was any wasted army uniform they would also use this to make garments with. Also as the men were away at war the women had to take more of a masculine role so they started to wear trousers as they were more practical .
My art movement for the 1940s is surrealism although surrealism wasn’t as graphic and digitalised as it is today it was still very well known all over the world and we learnt from it to give us what we have today. Surrealism art movement is a cultural movement and artistic style that was founded in the 1920s until the 60s. surrealism style uses visual imagery from the subconscious mind create art without the intention of logic. This art movement was a huge part of the 40s as it blew people’s minds it was a type of art that no one had ever seen or understood before how could something so real look so surreal. I chose surreal art movement as it is a very unusual style of art it really opens the mind and allows your creativity to wonder into all kinds of different ways the surreal art movement can show so much emotion and power in one image. The aim of Surrealism was to reveal the unconscious and reconcile it with rational life. Surrealism also aimed at social and political revolution and for a time was affiliated to the Communist party. Surreal refers to a dreamlike quality abstract yet real in a very, very subtle way.
In my opinion surreal art is a really beautiful art movement, it can capture so much emotion and meaning in one image. It makes me feel like I'm looking at a dream world something that is so different to reality that It is crazy As far as the style, “I was fascinated by surrealism. Mark Mothersbaugh Surrealism is different to other art and in my opinion it is one the best art movements iv ever seen. Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision. (Salvador Dali)
I really love dalis work as he is a very unique and satisfying artist “ There are some days when I think I'm going to die from an overdose of satisfaction” Salvador Dali. I believe when people look at his work they must think he is on drugs or something to create such surreal images that its hard to believe any one could be sober doing so “I don't do drugs. I am drugs.” Salvador Dali I would love to know what his influences are so I could investigate what goes on in his mind if that’s even possible however “The secret of my influence has always been that it remained secret.” Salvador Dali
RenĂŠ Magritte Surrealism was unique and reflected his sense of humour. Rather than fantastic creatures in fictional landscapes, he painted ordinary objects and people in realistic settings. His arrangements were often impossible under the laws of physics. The scale of these elements were frequently "wrong.".
He painted fakes of Picasso, Braque and Chirico to provide for himself. He attempted to make all of his art poetic in a way, to make people ponder its meaning.
He chose the titles of his works at random, often letting his friends title the paintings he created, which were usually crazy, weird, random titles. He sometimes painted objects in places that they didn't belong (like a train coming out of a fireplace) His first job was designing wallpapers and posters in order to make money to survive. Early on, he did not like any of his artwork He moved to Paris to paint with other surrealists, but hated them and ended up moving back to his old town, and burning everything that reminded him of the Paris surrealists
I enjoy looking at Renes work as it is like looking at the unknown you never know what to expect with his work and it is inspiring “The mind loves the unknown. It loves images whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of the mind itself is unknown.” Rene Magritte
The thing I love the most about surreal art is the fact that you cant always see the meaning “Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.” Rene Magritte
Surrealism has greatly impacted many fields. Surrealism in art is a creative act of effort to liberate imagination. Surrealism has had an impact on radical and revolutionary politics, both directly and indirectly The Surrealism art movement had a great impact in art, literature, culture and even extending to politics. Surrealism is a creative act of effort towards liberating the imagination. It is as dynamic as it is subtle; Surrealism is still alive and growing until today. Many artists around the world are influenced by Surrealism styles, ideas & techniques. Surrealism taught the world to see art not visually and literally but to appreciate it in a subconscious level as well. Today, surrealism is a familiar form of art that continues to grow globally. It’s easy for artists to show their creativity through Surrealism, because the style provides them more freedom to convey their feelings and thoughts through the canvas. Surreal art can be dreamy or gritty or it can be optimistic or depressing this has influenced artists to combined both together or work on each styles in all different ways. Many surreal artists have all been inspired by each others work and will develop over time, technology has been a huge part in surrealism as artists will improve there work as there are more graphics and techniques people can use with technology.

Pop art challenged the distinction between High and low art and became dominant art movement of the 60s and 70s in Brittan and the US drawing its imagery from popular culture made it accessible, popular and commercially successful .
The term “pop art was first used in the mid 50s to describe a group of young British artists and soon caught on in the us as well as in Brittan. As the reaction against the art for arts sake philosophy of post war abstract art. Pop art can be seen as having roots in dad and marcel Duchamp's. Givers the striking imagery of popular culture that young artists saw all around them in Hollywood movies in the graphics used in advertising and packaging comic strips and cartoons they needed to debunk the stuffiness of there art work.
In the 60s mass production was a huge part of society as this was when the supermarkets started really advertising there products this influenced Andy Warhol a famous pop artists to create prints of different supermarket products the most famous one was the Campbell Soup Can he did a print of a soup can and changed the colors and textures of it and it was brilliant advertising for the soup this brought millions of pounds into the pocket of both Andy Warhol and Campbell's soup. Also pop artists were influenced by famous people that had huge hits at the time and produced famous pop art images off them, the images became famous all over the world and this influenced other artists to do the same as the images were worth and still are millions.
The purpose was to challenge tradition and assume that the visual Elements of the mass media from the popular culture can be considered Fine art. Pop art is one of the most popular art movements of the modern era it was started As a rebellion against the abstract expression witch were considered to be a pretention and over intense. The pop art movement is defined by theme as and techniques drawn from the popular mass media Culture areas like advertising and comic books this art movement is considered a reaction to culture 2 of the most famous Pop art designers are Andy Warhol and Roy linch. Pop Art started in London in the mid-1950's. They called it Propaganda Art instead of Pop Art. This style of art came to the United States in the mid-1960s. Pop Art in the United States was an expression of the optimistic spirit of the 1960's.
Pop Art uses images and icons that are popular in the modern world. This includes famous celebrities like movie stars and rock stars, commercial items like soup cans and soft drinks, comic books, and any other items that are popular in the commercial world. There are a number of ways that artists use these items to create art such as repeating the item over and over again, changing the colour or texture of the item, and putting different items together to make a picture.
Early in his career, Andy Warhol was interested in using celebrities in his work. Hollywood idols such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor were popular models for his silkscreens Warhol was also interested in using advertising and consumer images that appealed to mass audiences in his work. His most iconic image is that of the Campbell Soup can. In 1962, Warhol showed "Campbell's Soup Cans," as a 32 canvases, each with a different variety of Campbell's soup. Warhol opened "The Factory" in 1962. "The Factory" was an art studio where Warhol employed workers to produce his work as Warhol used the primary colors-blue, red and yellow- prints and posters, mostly using in many of his pieces. These the silkscreen technique. His art became a mass production, just colors gave his work the feeling of pop culture. Bright like the many images he used colors were an element used within his work. in his iconic Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola cans, as well as his Marilyn paintings.
Andy Warhol really knows how to express his feelings in one image. “I'm afraid that if you look at a thing long enough, it loses all of its meaning.” Andy Warhol therefore he try's to make it as emotional as he can witch I think is a very very hard things to achieve however he does in everything he does. I love the way he uses all different colours and techniques to express all different meanings, I also love the way he didn’t really care about having a relationship as his art and life was more important “I had a lot of dates but I decided to stay home and dye my eyebrows.” Andy Warhol
In 1961, Lichtenstein created his first Pop Art painting. He liked the way commercial art looked and he liked the sharp, black outlines in comic book art. The Pop paintings he is known for combined the two styles He was a prominent pop artist whose work was exhibited heavily during the 1960s Lichtenstein’s Pop Art portrays things from popular culture. That’s why it’s called Pop Art. He drew inspiration from cartoons, newspapers, advertisements, and things he saw in real life (like his art studio). He used this inspiration to create enormous paintings as well as sculptures.
I really enjoy looking at Lichtenstein's work as the colors pop out at you and he isn't afraid to experiment with different techniques and He can express so much emotion within one image.
Roys work is very edgy but very strong, his use of bold colours inspire me, I love the way he expresses so much feeling in one image “I like to pretend that my art has nothing to do with me” Roy Lichtenstein I love the way that his work is from America and is still huge in the UK “In America the biggest is the best.” Roy Lichtenstein Iv always wondered what his influences where as his work is so unique and inspiring “ Picasso's always been such a huge influence that I thought when I started the cartoon paintings that I was getting away from Picasso, and even my cartoons of Picasso were done almost to rid myself of his influence.” Roy Lichtenstein
Pop Art is so popular today that it’s used for creating awesome birthday cards, t-shirts, badges, calendars, posters, canvases – so it’s really hard to ignore. The features of this art like the bright colors and the prints haven’t yet faded and I seriously doubt that they’ll ever will, as the popular movement still continues to fascinate today. Artists still use today most of the features of the pop art style as inspiration for their artworks. Andy Warhol’s and Roy Lichtenstein’s works are the most often used as models for their contemporary works. You will see that today’s artists are creating cool illustrations, prints and posters with details like: dotted image, strong and multiple colors, series of images on one print, famous people faces and home utilities like tv, radio, cameras.
.
Pop Art artwork, because of it’s bundle of colors represents a great inspirations for designers, whether we’re talking about product prints, posters, canvases, t-shirts or many other things. even some everyday products have awesome pop art inspired prints
My garment shapes have all been inspired by the 1960s and 1940s inspired and the paten/print are my art movement designs in all of my designs the design shape was traced from an artist called Laurence miller he is an 40s designer I have also looked at 3 other artists that have inspired me to create some of the designs I have chosen, theses are David wright, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein these artists are artists that produced art in the 60s and 40s the colours and contrast of the 2 are very different yet very unique as they are both inspiring. Most of my garments work well together as I have merged the 2 ideas together to create one full opposite idea for example I created a jacket that looks like a RAF styled jacket from the 1940s and added the completed opposite to the war for my 60s side and scattered peace signs all over the jacket. Id like express a message from this that we should look at opposite good and bad to create something beautiful.
My jacket is an RAF styled jacket and is 1940s/1960s inspired. Theses 2 eras were very different therefore I took the challenge off combining them together, this jacket will be filled with peace signs all over the front and back the concept of this is the war side of the 1960s and the peace side of the 1940s this jacket will be 2 completely different and opposites periods in time that made a huge impact on a lot of different things. On the front off my garment I will have buckle belt with silver buckle and 2 loop holes also I will have 3 buttons starting from just under the belt. I also have a pocket on the left top corner and a open keck collar. The sleeves will consist off 2 very thing lines that represent the RAF colours they will be blue and black the jacket is very fitted and pin straight. The back of the garment will just consist off a slit up the back to give space to move, the belt and also the sleeve tags.
My first image that I took was this image and was 1940s inspired however this image is very 1940s fashion styled more than the art movement as I decided I would change my art movement from pinup girls to surrealism however I still used this image in my PowerPoint because it helped me develop my images and helped me understand all different movements and what should be a better movement that would be 1940s inspired rather than the era inspired.
Before I changed my art movement I carried on experimenting with some of the pin up girl images to see weather or not I could use the movement in my research however I found that it would be a lot more relevant to create different images that will be used for my surreal art movement however I am pleased with this image for experimentation.
This image was one off my pop art photo-shoot experiments as pop art went with my 60s era I made the image 60s by wearing a top that says ’make tea not war’ on it as in the 60s peace protests were a really big part of society and to make the photo more pop arty I added a coloured effect to it however I think there are more ways that I could make this image more pop arty therefore wouldn’t use this image as my final.
This is the original image before I edited it to Become pop arty I prefer this image to the edited one Because you can make the 1960s era a lot clearer than you can on the pop art one also I'm not to fond Of the colours used in the edited one.
As I wasn’t happy with my original art movement I changed it to surrealism this was a lot more interesting and there was all different kinds of ways that I could experiment with this movement. In my image that I have made I made my face half dead half alive to create a surreal life form also made my self into some sort of puppet I will edit it this image to make it even more surreal.
I produced 2 more images to do with my second art movement of surrealism therefore I edited theses images to make it more surreal to do this I added different back grounds and changed the image to black and white, I painted my face to create the surreal look this was just an experiment but I was happy with the outcomes of my face pain however the backgrounds could use some more work.
This is my final image that I have developed by using different effects and colours on Photoshop, my 2 art movements were pop art and surrealism therefore I changed my image to combined both of them, the surreal part of my image would be the back ground and the way the image is however the moon has been made to look like pop art, I didn’t add to much pop art because my image is a dark surreal image therefore the brightness of the pop art would take the effect away from the surrealism however I added some pop art to get the movement across in my image, I am happy with my end image but would make some small changes like make the pop art side of things a lot stronger than they are and change the way I am standing in the photo but over all I enjoyed doing the photo-shoots.
