ARTIST STATEMENT Making art is like life’s journey — it has to begin somewhere and continue evolving. My work process is in flux like the layers that form the earth’s surface. Time and place change the textures and colors. These qualities are like treasures found on long hikes in places that inspire me to collect materials of nature. I also keep, in poetic form, notes about the presence of sounds, scents, sights and even touch, as well as sketches. These activities generate a new context, and the method of work follows in parallel synthesis to these layers. The process that creates the rich surface is a style for making art. Wax emulsion is the medium for painting, using a formula of beeswax, turpenoid and pigment. The ground is masonite coated with rabbit skin glue textured with a special formula of modeling paste and spackle. Most of the work incorporates collage of natural materials such as turtle shells, soil, stones, bones and other. One might occasionally find text taken from the ‘artist journal’ on the back of a painting or incorporated into the art work. The surface of the art is layers of wax applied with a palette knife and

hands while each layer is heat set. After the final layer dries the surface is ready to be incised, gouged, scratched, buffed and perhaps embedded with additional materials. The cradle is handcrafted and designed to fit the size of the masonite. The paintings are installed flat against the wall. The two-inch-thick cradle, textured surface with wrap-around and method of hanging gives the work a sense of painting/sculpture. Many works are 12 x 12 and installed as multiples to form a square, rectangle, horizon, straight line or to become a wall of tiles. Sometimes the squares are exhibited individually. The complexity of the works are arranged and rearranged to create new boundaries with each exhibition. The installation is always complemented with sculpture and other geometric shapes of art. Recently primordial or original sketches are incorporated onto the surface of the art work. Philosophically, the layering of wax and collage in each work echoes the layers that make up the shifting surface of the earth. The layers represent traces of archeological history. They are remnants of past journeys. I like how the mind creates emotional connections, and I translate this into the process in making art.
