HONOR ROLL HONOR ROLL

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR On behalf of Penn State Hillel, I am pleased to report another successful year in fulfilling our mission of enriching the lives of Jewish students at Penn State. The 2015 fiscal year brought a number of remarkable opportunities and successes in continuing to position Penn State Hillel as a model of excellence. As our organization grows, we continue to look for innovative ways to provide meaningful experiences for our Penn State students. As we head into year two of the three–year, Comprehensive Excellence Pilot grant program in partnership with Hillel International and the Beacon and Shapira Foundations, we aim to continue modeling excellence for Hillels throughout the movement. Last year, we sent nearly 150 students to Israel on Birthright Israel trips, Masa Israel Internships, and alternative breaks. We’ve launched a Campus Engagement Internship Program, a year-long, transformative experience that builds a personal foundation for students’ Jewish identities through peer-to-peer engagement.

through peer-to-peer engagement. We’ve continued to strengthen our relationship with the University including the Office of the President and the Schreyer Honors College. Since the implementation of the grant, our staff team has expanded from five to nine full-time professionals, student engagement numbers have increased to more than 1,300, and our student board continues to develop a student leadership structure that provides a personalized Jewish experience for all students on campus. In fact, this year we will implement an entirely new student board structure that aligns with President Eric Barron’s initiative, Invent Penn State, which challenges our student leaders to embrace an entrepreneurial spirit. With the new structure, Penn State Hillel will truly become the foundation for Jewish life, offering student groups grant allocations, educational resources, and leadership opportunities to develop a more engaged and innovative community! Thank you to the parents, alumni, supporters, and our extended Hillel family for your investment in Jewish

life at Penn State. I hope that you will continue to support our growth and help make Penn State Hillel the premier organization for Jewish life in the country! L’Shalom,

Aaron Kaufman Penn State Hillel Executive Director

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Penn State Hillel continues to thrive as one of the most dynamic, innovative, and forward-thinking Jewish organizations in the country! It is an extremely exciting time to get involved with Penn State Hillel! We are looking forward to building on our previous successes, and moving toward a more impressive future. Our Capital and Endowment Campaign is gaining momentum and the work we do on campus has received welcome support. We are currently in the midst of a $15 million Capital and Endowment Campaign to build the stateof-the-art facility that Penn State Hillel needs and deserves. As many of you know, we have already purchased an incredible piece of land located in Downtown State College on the corner of Beaver Avenue and Garner Street. The building will feature the first-ever Kosher Café in State College, a multimedia workspace for student and professional use, a rooftop garden,

collaborative office space, and more! Upon the completion of the Capital and Endowment Campaign, Penn State Hillel will be even better positioned to create vibrant Jewish life and engage the 5,000 Jewish students at Penn State. This year marks the second of the three-year, transformational Comprehensive Excellence Pilot grant. Thanks to Hillel International and the Beacon and Shapira Foundations, the grant has supported Penn State Hillel’s growth and success on campus. The grant provides Penn State Hillel approximately $800,000 over the three-year period. With the influx of capital come significant matching opportunities for supporters of Penn State Hillel! I hope you will take advantage of this matching opportunity and join us in creating excellence for Jewish life at Penn State. Serving as Chairman of the Penn State Hillel Board of Directors is an extremely rewarding experience.

With the highly motivated, talented, and passionate members of our Board, and the best professional staff in the country, I firmly believe that we are making a real impact on the future of the Jewish people. We are always looking for new, passionate individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of Jewish Penn State students. If you are interested in joining our Board, please fee free to contact me!

That means that every day, staff and student leaders alike are meeting students for coffee, planning programs for students, or creating other opportunities for Jewish life on campus. We meet students where they are, literally and spiritually, and we aspire to move them on their journey. I am often asked why I do this work and why I find it so critical to the Jewish future. Can a coffee date really change the lives of our students? I believe it does, and our Jewish tradition suggests it is our job to find out. I am reminded of a story from the Babylonian Talmud. Once, while the sage, Honi, was walking along a road, he saw an old man planting a carob tree. Honi asked him: “How many years will it take for this tree to give forth its

fruit?” The man answered that it would require 70 years. Honi asked: “Are you so healthy a man that you expect to live that length of time and eat its fruit?” The man answered: “I found a fruitful world because my ancestors planted it for me. So, too, will I plant for my children.” (Babylonian Talmud, Ta’anit 23a) Our staff and our students have received a wonderful inheritance from Penn State Hillel’s previous staff and Jewish students. And we know that every time we meet students for coffee, create Jewish experiences for them on campus, or simply bring Judaism to existing spaces, we plant a seed which we hope bears fruit beyond students’ college years. It is this attitude that permeates our work every day, from our staff of nine to the over 50 engaged student leaders who are meeting their peers every day of

the week. Thank you for making Penn State Hillel a part of your lives so that we may help build the Jewish future one student at a time.

Rob France Penn State Hillel Assistant Director

A MESSAGE FROM OUR STUDENT PRESIDENT College is more than just four years of a student’s life. Every day is a gift, an opportunity to try something new. It’s the first time I had the choice to sleep in and miss class or get up and learn something. Never in my life did I have so many opportunities waiting for me to choose where I would direct my life. Attending Penn State is truly a dream come true. In my four years here, I’ve taken classes ranging in topics from marketing to Jewish Studies; and I’ve had the ability to shape new students’ lives by being a Residence Assistant and helping students take advantage of the new world they’ve stepped into. Everyday, I am privileged to have been given these opportunities to grow and become another successful graduate of Penn State University. One of the most impactful opportunities I found on campus is Hillel. For me, my Hillel involvement began before I even applied to college. In my junior year of high school, I started making college visits. During these visits, I would arrive on campus Friday night, just

before services started, and observe Shabbat with the students at each Hillel. When I arrived for my visit at Penn State and walked into the Hillel, I felt something different. Nobody knew that I was a high school junior and they still welcomed me as though I was already a Penn Stater. Never had I felt so comfortable or at home with a new group of people. In that moment, I knew that I could find a home at Penn State Hillel. When classes began in the fall of 2012, I walked into my first official Hillel Shabbat and that same comfort I felt as a high school student came rushing back. In the weeks to follow, I attended every Hillel event I could. There, I found my best friends, my mentors, my roommates, and countless opportunities that have brought me to where I am today. Because of the confidence these new relationships gave me, I found myself as a freshman sitting on the Hillel Student Board. From that point on, Hillel has provided me with opportunities in engagement, university relations,

programming, and eventually, my position today as Penn State Hillel’s Student President. Because of Hillel’s leadership development, I can now call myself a proud Jewish leader. I’m confident in running meetings, building relationships with peers, mentors, and other leaders and I can step outside my comfort zone to learn, understand and appreciate new perspectives and ideas. These skills, and more, all came from the opportunities Hillel and Penn State have provided me. College is truly a dream, and I only wish that I could never wake up from it. This dream will live on as the memory of four of the greatest, most amazing years of my life. It is because of every experience and opportunity thrown my way, especially Penn State Hillel, that I am able and ready to enter the “real world.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? – ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT “Know where you came from, in order to know where you are going.” This nearly 2,000 year-old Jewish teaching tells the story of my journey. In my present place, as the Assistant Rabbi at Temple Sholom of Chicago and an HUC-JIR doctoral student, I recognize that a great deal of my success is due to my time as an active part of Penn State Hillel. During those years, ’04 – ’08, I learned that Judaism does not have a “one size fits all path” for each person. With the support of Hillel during those years, I was able to navigate the University Administration and discuss problems and issues I saw at Penn State. This led to the creation of the Passover Kosher Food Program and the introduction of kosher food at Penn State. More importantly, by watching our Hillel leaders and learning from their

example, I saw the transformative power that an open heart and mind, coupled with the sincere belief that each and every relationship is important, can have on shaping and growing a community. These lessons have not only helped me succeed, but also have made a better person and rabbi. I know where I came from – Hillel—a place that challenged me to look beyond myself and know that I am responsible to and for my community. I know where I am going – to a place that is built upon the foundations embodied by Hillel and that is the official mantra of my synagogue – to be a home that inspires, embraces and ensures that each and every one of us matters. Penn State Hillel will always be an integral part of my journey and I am excited that this great organization exists as a guideposts to the thousands of

Jewish students on the Penn State campus.

A NEW ‘KEHILAH’ - FRESHMAN SPOTLIGHT My favorite Hebrew word is kehilah, meaning community. I had always been highly involved in the Jewish community in Allentown, Pennsylvania where I grew up. I met my best friends in Pre-K at the Allentown Jewish Community Center and together, continued on through Hebrew school, high school, and BBYO, a pluralistic Jewish youth group that works to provide more Jewish teens with more meaningful experiences. The Jewish community in Allentown, Pennsylvania was my home and leaving that home for college was absolutely terrifying. New students at any college are told that they are about to embark on a journey through the best four years of their life. But there is one thing no one tells them; it might be scary and difficult. I experienced this difficult transition during my first few weeks here. I got lost on my first day and was completely astounded by the sheer number of different faces everywhere. I knew I wanted to get involved with Hillel no matter where I went

to school because I knew the Jewish community would be my new home. However, I was so overwhelmed when I got to Penn State that my roommate had to drag me to my first Penn State Hillel event during Welcome Week. Immediately, I was welcomed by both staff and students. We automatically played the most intense game of Jewish geography and found how many people we knew in common. I met tons of new Jewish freshman students and, over time, found my best friends. I began attending Shabbat dinner every week and feeling like I was sitting down with family. The Hillel staff especially made every effort to get to know me and help me through my transition. Today, my transition is still difficult at times. When I wake up in the morning with a stuffy nose, I miss my mom. When it has been a long week of studying, I miss sleeping in my bed at home and cuddling with my dog. The best thing about Penn State Hillel is that they are always there when those feelings creep up. I

have the ability to stop in the Hillel office whenever and see my family away from home. When I woke up sick, their soup delivery program saved the day. Hillel truly is a kehilah at Penn State. If there is one thing I have learned in my short 18 years, it is that Dorothy was right; there truly is no place like home. Penn State Hillel has made University Park sure feel like an incredible second home.
