HALCYON The Halcyon Hotel is located in downtown San Francisco. The concept was derived from the metamorphic process of gold mining and refining. This mineral serves as the foundation for the city of San Francisco and the design of the Halcyon Hotel. Polished golden alloys create a warm, welcoming environment for guests. Contrasting gold and onyx shades accentuate the minimal architectural details. Towering gilded columns, gold veined marble, and forged metallic luminaires support the design concept.

Halcyon’s spa embodies the organic beauty of California’s riverbeds. Design of the spa was driven by the process of panning for gold. A cornerstone of the space is the centrally located water feature. CONCEPT

The guest level of the Halcyon Hotel welcomes patrons with luxurious textures and contrasting hues. The refinery process was the conceptual influence for this aspect of the design. When gold is refined, it is combined with other elements to form alloys. The alloy combination determines the shade of the gold. The various shades of gold formed in the refining process can be seen throughout the guest level.

The custom wallcovering for the Halcyon guest level, is influenced by the refining processes of gold. Because gold is a soft metal it is often combined with another metal to form an alloy. The combination of gold and iron, a blue hued metal, is reflected in the wallcovering. The wallcovering is implemented in all guest rooms behind the headboard creating a strong focal point in the space.

+ CONCEPT Plated restaurant and Tonic bar sit upon the rooftop of the Halcyon Hotel, The location provides incredible views of the San Francisco skyline. These spaces are conceptually driven by the tectonic movement which pushes gold from the core of the earth to its surface. The selection of orange hues incorporated through the space creates harmony with the city scape and its signature International Orange Golden Gate Bridge.

GHAZAL Ghazal is an international restaurant located in Fez, Morocco. The concept for the interior was inspired by the textile industry. The dye industry is a cornerstone for the Moroccan culture. Textiles, from thread, to dye, to yarn, represent the true magnificence of Moroccan artistry. Ghazal, means “to spin in Arabic, a nod to the spinning of fibers into yarn. This original restaurant incorporates and highlights artisan textiles and their importance in Moroccan culture.

Enchanting the customer, Elora’s incorporation of technology creates a distinctive shopping experience. To catch the eye of passerby, new technology from Toshiba was implemented. Screens in the storefront display the latest designs from Elora. When a customer approaches the storefront their image is placed on the screens, a window keypad allows them to shift between different jewelry looks and virtually try on each piece. Focus Focus optometry was designed with the goal of creating an environment which welcomes and heals patients. Focus is defined as the center of interest or activity, so incorporating visual interest in the clinic was paramount. In every exam room, customizable luminous textiles mounted on the wall entertain the patient before their eye examination. Wallcoverings set each space apart and play off of the idea of eyes being in and out of focus with blurred and gradient motifs. The eye travels from focal point to focal point throughout the clinic capturing the attention of the client.

Native perspective Native Perspective is designed with the goal of highlighting Mississippi and the talents of its native artists, as well as the innately beautiful materials found in the state. The gallery features sculpture, paintings, and various fine arts by Mississippi artists. Key features of the design such as the historic flood plain cartographic flooring in the entry gallery highlights the most famous natural element in the state. This geographic feature is so key to the state, it was only natural to incorporate it into this design. Columns of marled pinewood offset the gallery as an ode to the states pine belt. The space plan creates a natural winding movement through the various art galleries, similar to the way the Mississippi River flows.

Lighting Lighting Goals The primary goals for the lighting design of this space include flexibility, color rendering, and optimum foot candle optimization throughout the space. To accomplish this, a combination of track, wall wash, and adjustable lamping fixtures were implemented. Color rendering on each fixture exceeds 90% showing true to color shades. By implementing photo sensors, LED fixtures, and color monitor LCD touchscreens, throughout the space the user is able to control light levels and conserve energy.

COLOR + LIGHTING//Fall 2015

Concept This luminaire was designed to reflect and refract light. The cut-out pattern manipulates the light diffusing through the shade casting doppled shadows. The gold lined shade amplifies the warmth of the light and reflects it into the space. L’or des Fous, or “fool’s gold”, is named for the warm light it diffuses.

LUMINAIRE Sketches

Construction The lamp was created by combining a wooded base, glass cylinder, and gold lined paper. The paper was cut out to create an alternating linear pattern.

Concept

Ma’at Stool is based on the idea of biomimicry. The design mimics the blossom of a Lotus flower. In ancient Egyptian culture, the Lotus bloomed in conjunction with the flood and flow of the Nile. This cycle shaped the world view of the Egyptian culture and became known as Ma’at.
