OBJECTIVE: For IIDA’s Student Competition, rethink OFS Brands’ headquarters—a family-owned company providing
furniture solutions for offices, healthcare, education, government, and home office markets. Provide a flexible office for the company’s dynamic workforce in need of a space that encourages and supports their daily activities and roles.
NE W B E G I NNI NG S OFS Brands, beginning with the purchase of woodlands, is forever bonded with the forest, not only through their furniture, but also through the replanting of trees they have cut down. The redesign for this company’s headquarters will bring their tie to nature on the outside into the office with a natural color palette and sustainable materials, utilizing the abundance of daylighting provided by the well-openings, and connecting departments with collaborative spaces and an open floorplan. G R O W. Taking inspiration from how flora and fauna continue to persevere and grow through challenges, the new office design offers areas to encourage employee growth. Nestled in a space plan that has room to breathe, the private nooks can be used for conversations or project works and the creative corner can be utilized by any department to meet for brainstorming. E N V E L O P. As trees lovingly envelop and value the wildlife about their roots, OFS as a company upholds a philosophy that encourages collaboration with and respect for fellow employees. When a person exits the elevator, they are embraced by a spacious lobby area with views of the CEO’s office, a smiling receptionist, and a collaborative area showing that the company desires to openly engage with anyone who walks through their doors. I N S P I R E . Nature has long been the inspiration for dreamers and creatives. As a furnishings company, OFS needs to always stay inspired with new ideas to fuel the creation of products. Their new office will provide several areas that will enable employees to come up with brilliant ideas including corkboard wall surfaces for employees to pin up drawings or moodboards as well as writable walls and colored glass panels that allow for a quick sketches when inspiration strikes.

Armstrong Middle School OBJECTIVE: Armstrong Middle School in Starkville, MS, has issues with building wellness and student well-being. A lack of natural light and poor circulation for each pod of students does not allow them to reach their potential or feel comfortable moving from class to class. The design goal for the renovation of the school focuses around providing better circulation, more natural light, and ensuring that the students have an environment that inspires them.
THE ECOSYSTEM Armstrong is part of a network of schools in the Oktibbeha County area, and its pod-oriented teaching structure mimics that of nature’s own ecosystem, embracing differences and uniting a family of students and teachers.
A DDI T I ON + S U BT R AC T I ON Education represents adding and subtracting in two important ways. One has a literal connotation, the learning of basic mathematics that will forever be part of each student’s life. The other, more metaphorical in application, manifests itself in how children will continuously move through each pod every year, representing the everpresent fluidity of life through time. These two notions take on a physical body in the push and pull design of the building’s shell and space plan allowing for improved circulation and an abundance of natural light.
T H E HI VE The design of each pod draws inspiration from the school’s mascot, the yellow jacket. These insects, though best known for being pesky during picnic season, have remarkable determination and a selfless loyalty to their fellows. Each pod at Armstrong represents a hive that coexists with its surrounding ecosystem. Their private classrooms and lounge areas give them autonomy while still remaining part of the greater whole, and the central grand staircase leading form the common spaces of the first floor represents the connection of all life through a shared environment.

The push/pull design aspect can be seen in the custom reception desk which is the first thing students & parents see upon entering Armstrong. Behind it is a custom hexagonal wall tile arranged to showcase the re-branded school logo.
The central raised seating area provides an interesting focal point of the new library space. It faces another custom push/pull inspired desk with a custom shelving system mounted on the wall behind it.

Craneo Boutique Hotel
OBJECTIVE: To develop a better understanding of hospitality design and further collaboration skills through the renovation and re-branding of an 18 level boutique hotel as well as researching and selecting the ideal location for hotel. Project scope includes the development of a lobby, lobby restaurant & bar, spa, guest rooms & suites, and a rooftop space with an additional restaurant & bar. The project is presented through a conceptual rooftop model, a maquette of a guest room typical, a promotional video, and formal presentation boards.
A P I E C E O F PA R A DI S E Located in the heart of San Diego, California, Craneo takes pride in being a physical ode to the rich culture of the surrounding city. This illustrious boutique hotel draws inspiration directly form one of the most famous and important of Hispanic holidays, Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which is a joyful celebration of life and a sweet time of remembrance for loved ones. Participants in this holiday wear clothing of black & white and adorn themselves in vivid color, using the marigold flower to honor those who have left this world and painting their faces in the famous “sugar skull” fashion. Keeping in step with those traditions, Craneo drives its name form the Spanish word for “skull” and it celebrates the lives of its guests through rich colors, familiar patterns, and luxe materials. Overlaying color onto a backdrop of simple black and white, this hotel endeavors to make those that spend time within its walls feel the same sense of joy. Standing eighteen stories tall, this urban piece of paradise sets new expectations for the hotel experience. Upon entering Craneo, guests can be treated to a light fare at Cha Chara with its variety of healthy Spanish inspired dishes. Then before heading to their rooms, they can enjoy a relaxing beverage form Pomulo bar, convenient located inside Cha Chara. Once settled in, guests may decide to go to Frente Spa where they can further unwind with a massage; and a day at Craneo cannot end without a visit to the rooftop skybar, La Orbita, which provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding Gaslamp District.

Deriving branding from Spanish words for parts of the skull, Cha Chara is named for one of the nasal bones; and Pomulo, the lobby’s bar nestles inside of Cha Chara, is named for the cheekbones. The flocked wallcovering & deep burgundy velvets create a dramatic backdrop for a meal or drinks with friends.
Frent e
Craneo’s in-house spa delves into the human consciousness and provides sensory stimuli for mental wellness as well as traditional services like massages and facials for physical comfort. Named for the frontal bone protecting the part of the brain that controls cognitive skills such as emotional expression, Frente gives guests an opportunity to relax and release negative energy. The Zen Room offers custom built swings or allows guests to drift away form life in the small flotation therapy pool filled with salt water.

G uest R ooms & S uites Craneo’s guest rooms & suites are designed to make patrons feel at home when spending their nights in the Gaslamp District and are inspired by the marigold. The king, queen, and doubledouble rooms each have a different color scheme, but all room types have the same black & white custom wall feature behind the headboard and the same wood beams spanning the length of the ceiling providing cohesiveness. The custom carpet design in the corridors are inspired by traditional Spanish rugs, and every room and suite door boasts a decorative marigold underneath the room’s number, giving a subtle nod to the tiny flower that influenced the design choices for each space.

L a O rbita The rooftop skybar & grill adorning Craneo’s 18th floor takes its name from the Spanish word for the orbital bone as it provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding city. A custom moss wall piece that showcases a black steel sign with the bar & grill’s name meets guests as they exit the elevator. To the right, they will see a checkerboard patio constructed of grass & stone tiles flanking the walkway to the bar & grill’s main entrance. Traditional back & white floor tiles lead into the large open space that houses the custom-built eye-shaped bar. Black & white strips of flooring lead up to raised platform seating with a black stripe continuing on to run up a white plaster wall. Another patio space overlooks an eye-shaped sitting area dropped into the long infinity pool spanning the width of the building. A minibar stands just next to the poolside areas for patron convenience and comfort.

Health & Wellness S e a t t l e , WA
OBJECTIVE: For Steelcase's NEXT design competition, develop a 12,000 square foot space located in an existing
Seattle office tower to reflect the continual innovation that is being made in the delivery of care and help facilitate the shift from acute care facilities to more community based delivery. The new space should highlight the brand of NEXT that promotes healthy living and active lifestyles as well as emphasizes preventive care.
T H E A P OT H E C A RY In days gone by, the chemist served the doctor and the patient, giving advice and educating both professionals and laymen on revolutionary discoveries in holistic medicine. However, close relationships and collaboration between medical professionals and their patients no longer belongs in the past. The modern healthcare clinic has nodded at history and started a revolution of its own. NEXT Health & Wellness takes inspiration from Ye Olde Apothecary, focusing on patient well-being and education, collaboration and transparency between doctor and patient, and presenting a clinic philosophy and aesthetic design that appeals to both the baby boomer generation and millennials.
B A L A N C E . C O L L A B O R AT E . A D A P T. The heart of the apothecary encompassed having extraordinary balance. The chemist had to concoct a delicate blend of old methods with innovative ideas, constantly striving to make new discovers while honoring traditional procedures. NEXT sees the modern healthcare establishment as being no different and desires to balance what appeals to older patients as well as incorporate technology and innovative techniques for a younger generation. Communication between chemist and patient and chemist and doctor was once a way of life; but over the centuries, that practice faded with the past. NEXT intends to provide opportunities for that sense of collaboration and transparency once again. Throughout the clinic’s space plan, areas for conversation can be found along the passageways. Part of the apothecary’s beauty existed with its ability to adapt and evolve. The modern healthcare facility should also possess that ability. The design of the clinic allows for expansion and adaptation, and most spaces have multi-functional purposes allowing for the clinic culture to grow, evolve, and engage with every wave of revolutionary discoveries.

Individual Project / Studio III / FALL 2016 S o f t wa r e : Adobe Photoshop & InDesign
OBJECTIVE: To design a new flagship designer accessory store in a 7,000 square foot, two level building in Toronto,
Canada. Develop branding that complements the already established luxury brand of the existing company, while also highlighting the store's individuality. All components of the project should be hand sketched & hand rendered for final presentations.
T H E O V E R L AY The idea of layers exists in a variety of ways whether it emerges voluntarily in a trickle of molten rock or is applied by human hands as a filter or texture in artistic works. Multifaria draws from the concept of an overlay by creating a unique vision for fashion and suggests that it should be a neutral cloud on which individuals etch and layer parts of themselves. In the design of the store, the company presents a physical representation of their brand through selected finishes and fixture design.
E ME R G E One of life’s great paradoxes lies with the truth that while human beings want to feel like they belong somewhere, they also possess an innate longing to be special. Multifaria believes that this paradox can be appeased through accessorizing current fashion trends in one’s own way. The focal display of the store’s ground floor holds a multilayer platform of mannequins that rest on planks running up the wall and out onto the floor. This display represents one’s unique expression of style against the backdrop of fashion.
E V O LV E While classic staples such as the “little black dress” exist, what society considers as vogue rarely stays stagnant for long. Similarly, an individual evolves and grows throughout his life and will choose to express himself differently in each phase. Multifaria stands behind their customers and encourages them to explore who they are and who they will become. Through purposefully designed fixtures that layer themselves on each other in a harmony of rectangular shapes and a ceiling plan that starts as a simple, track-lit grid but develops into linear trails of light, the design exhibits the ever evolving tastes of society and individual alike.

The Theodore Lounge Chair and-written letters in this modern day time; using a film camera instead of a phone, picking flowers H from a garden for the dinner table; roses & ice, copper & stone, hands holding fire these things don't belong together; yet together, they make a bold statement. Together they hold elements of —
a different time, a different way of life; and together they create a mystical quality. The goal for the furniture design project was to create something that made users feel the same emotions the concept images inspire—to produce a chair that presents a physical representation of the marriage of old and new, the combination of different elements that come together as one cohesive piece.

Light of the World P
eople say that love is the universal language—but it's not the only one. Light does not discriminate from culture to culture. The sun shines on the wealthy and poor alike, and the moon looks the same in North America as it does in Africa. Light transcends social gaps and continents. It connects us and brings warmth and hope to our lives in all its forms. The "Light of the World" lamp represents the global span light has and the universal language of electricity.

Reclaimed Shelf he idea of a magazine table has been around for T years—as have dresser drawers and bookshelves— but what if one put those things together? With this
question, the Magazine Shelfer Drawer was born: a timeless hodge podge of items, literally modge podged together with pages from magazines. This is furniture for the ages, immortalizing fleeting moments in time, providing useful storage, making use of discarded bedroom furniture, and easily sparking conversations at dull dinner parties.

Finished Product The end result looks a little different from the initial conceptual sketch. Instead of tiny rolled up pages, the sides are covered in pictures modge podged together; and instead of a shelf made from rolled up magazines, the center of the drawer sports a stained piece of wood that matches the drawer front. All in all, however, despite the differences, the finished product is an elegant and functional example of reclaimed furniture.
