ALL ABOARD From fantastical graphics and electrfying colours, to digital hazes, the mood for Spring/ Summer 2014 is that of diverse, inspred by sports-luxe and faded out treatment patterns. 3 of the main focuses; tailoring, knitwear and stylised trousers encompass this relaxed, under-constructive look, focusing on the finer details.

TAILORING

Tailoring gets the streamlined touch for Spring/ Summer 2014 as designers from Neil Barrett and Lanvin explore with buttonless and concealed fastening details creating a more lean take on the traditional silhouette. A focus on classic grey wool and white linen along with silk blends and smooth cottons. An additional sense of volume is also created through more boxy tailoring, slightly over styling the traditional silhouette, combined with slim leg pants or shorts. These unique styles take an subtle, casual take on suit dressing.

Summer marls add a gentle approach to the more traditional gently diffused knit, offering a more slight method of introducing colour this season. Soft, washed out red and pink shades combined with darker tones provide an up tp date classic knit with a diffusion of new loose crew necks. Textured stitch structures and open work mesh also receive a revivial for summer knits, taking on a honeycomb, lightweight effect with mesh layers for a dimesnional sportswear look.

SOFT LEGGED PANT

Sportswear influences put more casual shorts and trousers on the radar for summer; think elastic wasitlines and longer-length silhouettes inspired by novelty fabrics and new fashion colours. Key shades of whites, blues and greys create a more luxe look for the everyday trouser. The softer long-length pants will see a revivial from Winter 2013 with most designers opting for east pleat fronts and a fullness to the randomly pleated hemline. This shape is key to the 1950’s-inspired Truckstop looks.

A set of garments made from the same cloth, endless variations of pre-made patterns and ready-to-wear off the rack selections; the classic suit is a staple piece for Everyman. Founded in the early 19th century which saw a sharp change from elaborate, jewelled formal clothing, to the more subtle, traditional clothing of the British Regency Period. The search for comfort during this period of change gave way to the loosening of rules when it came to formal wear, and the introduction of the 19th century modern lounge suit. Originally, as with the rest of clothing during the late 19th century. a tailor would design and make a mans suit from hand from the clients selected cloth; now known as the bespoke suit. Custom made to measure and fitting the style of the man, these bespoke pieces ensured every man owned a personal collection. However, since the Industrial Revolution, the majority of suits are mass produced, sold as ready-to-wear garments and available in mainstream stores. Bespoke pieces had become a rarity, until the more recent revivial of more luxury, customised garments.

True bespoke suits are created through collaboration; a fusion of traditional skills through the tailor and the specific tastes of the client. What first attracted you to visit Rome and why? The history and the romance of the city. There seemed to be this undeinable aura surrounding the city that just encapsulated me and drew me towards it. I wanted to wonder around its historic landmarks and take is all that I could. I’m at my happiest when I am left to travel and explore.

With so much in terms of history and culture to see, how much time was spent exploring other aspects such as food? Quite a bit. Everywhere around the city are small hidden coffee shops, individual cafes and of course traditional Italian restaurants. The key to Rome’s soul lies in the food. It would be an undeniable crime not to indugle in such things.

Where is your favourite spot to visit in Rome and why? Hadrian’s Villa without a doubt. It is possible one of the most beautiful, untouched places on earth. It’s not one of the most popular tourist spots in Rome but is truly a gem that shouldnt be ignored.

Do you plan your trip in advance or prefer to take it in as you go? Always spontaeous. Of course it’s important to plan, but the spontaneity always makes a trip.

What makes the city so unique from any other? The history and culture along with its modern twists. There is nothing else like it.

What is your ideal way to spend an evening in Rome? Idealling dining in one of the cities very many exquisite restaurants, eating fabulous food before then roaming the narrow streets for hours on end, discovering cosy Italian bars and unique shops.

How would you describe the city in three words? Charming Refined Elegant

Any last minute suggestions for those you haven’t visited yet? Just go. That’s all I can say.

What first attracted you to visit Rome and why? A friend mentioned that they had stopped over in Rome during a cruise a few months before. They recommended it so I went.

Where is your favourite spot to visit in Rome and why? Im not sure if I have one particular favourite spot. All the historical sites are nice but there are some unseen places that I uncovered which aren;t pinpointed on the typical tourist guide.

With so much in terms of history and culture to see, how much time was spent exploring other aspects such as food? All the time. Nearly every street corner offers some unique. It would almost be rude not to try them out.

Do you plan your trip in advance or prefer to take it in as you go? The first time it was definately planned. The next two were a little more last minute. I never really need a specific reason to go back.

What makes the city so unique from any other? Every city is unique. Rome just mixes modern culture with its Italian culture.

What is your ideal way to spend an evening in Rome? Such a typical answer, but relaxing in one of its many traditional restaurants eating fine food. Some places can be a little pricey in the evening but it’s always worth it for that little extra.

How would you describe the city in three words? Flourishing Unexpected Plush

Any last minute suggestions for those you haven’t visited yet? Don’t always stick to the typical tourist hot spots. There is so much more to see than meets the eye, but I’ll leave that for you to discover.

PARI DUKOVIC Upcoming photographer Pari Dukovic captures the heart of that great metropolis that is New York City, photographing its people, streets, buildings and noise, documenting the cities psyche in all its glory. ‘I wanted to portray the City in much the same way I felt about it; The images both bold and instantaneous, come across as charged and unexpected.’ Mimicking this, his images are intuitively responding to the unexpected nature of New Yorks bustling atomosphere. ‘ I envisioned breaking the rules, deliberately creating an overly contrasty and grainy reality to my parallel experience.’

Inspired by youth and childhood dreams, young photographer Nirrimi Hakanson creates and develops images based on the desire to re-live her youthful period. The naivety and unconventional beauty of the images demostrate an ability to reconnect indivuduals with their past. Described as ‘other-wordly’ and ‘wistful’ her photographs re-ignite a lost passion for filtering,; although nothing seems over done.

New York based photographer Josh Wool likes to keep gear and crews to a minimum and use primarily natural light, which he finds “more dynamic.” He adds, “When you’re just sitting with someone and you’re in a chair, they’re in a chair, you’re having a conversation and you just happen to be taking pictures, that’s when the best photos come out—at least for me.” Venturing out across the creative world, Wool connects more and more with alternate photographers, designers and musicians all working in indsutry.
